Charlie Strang said his mother is the reason why Mercury motors are now painted black. Back when Mercury was coming out with the 1000 Mercury, the prototype paint scheme was a white motor with silver and black trim. Carl Kiekhaefer, when viewing the prototype, thought the motor looked too big and bulky in white. Charlie told his mother about Carl's comments, and Charlie's mother commented back that women sometimes wear black dresses to look a lot slimmer, why not paint the motor black?

Carl liked the idea, so Charlie had one of the new Mercs repainted black. Carl loved the slimming effect of the motor in black and ordered the paint scheme to be changed to black for all future Mercury outboard motors.

It’s a common belief (https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/spirituality) that if you want to appear slimmer than you actually are, you should wear clothes with vertical stripes. The classical pinstriped business suit would be an example of this sort of clothing hiding a few extra pounds.
It turns out that this folk belief is fundamentally wrong. A square composed of horizontal lines appears taller and narrower than an identical square made up of vertical lines.

This illusion was discovered by Hermann von Helmholtz in 1925, and is also known as the Helmholtz illusion. Helmholtz’s explanation of the illusion was that a filled out area looks longer than an unfilled area of the same size. His thought was that the figure with horizontal stripes looks filled and hence longer from bottom up, whereas the square with vertical lines looks filled and hence longer from left to right. This then generates the illusion that the square with horizontal lines is taller and slimmer than the same-sized square with vertical stripes, which looks short and fat.

An ECK invention - they were held in place by an inflated rubber seal all the way around. Had some here in Fond du Lac on the Die Cast Offices - but the cold weather would freeze the seal and the windows started to fall out!!!

What boat is the 41 boat ? The 800 was a big step for Merc.....but a progrsson. Merc changed the fireing order. made the block longer, first non pullstart DR,First powerdome.First8splineD/S first Jetprop DR......other than the 700 which was a contun of the Mk 75/78 ......all to be replaced buy the 90 cid 1000......I payed $100 for one in 1969.....it was junk.....I payed $100 for one a year ago.... it was nice..... but a 20 incher. Call me a nut.... but I like old Mercs......

Bob Carver's signature is also in the lower left corner. The location of the jump was in front of the long gone Redondo Marina (WA). If you look at the Merc Boathouse Bulletin copy you will see a tree line near the shore. Today, all of those trees are gone and covered with water front and view homes.:(

I was 4 years old in 1959. I'm pretty sure that no one is alive today who may have witnessed this jump. Bob Carver's boat race photos were published in a book years ago. It may say something about the outcome of the jump? Redondo Marina (Redondo / Des Moines WA) is long gone and the only thing that remains is the boat launch (Google Maps). Redondo WA is on salt water which explains how the ramp got built (minus / low tides). It would have been financially impossible to build a ramp in fresh water (Lake Washinrton, etc) at the time. An impossible project in this day and age (EPA,DNR, state, federal agencies, etc) No wonder Lake X is a nature reserve now. Many of the sites we used to race at in western WA have been eliminated or stopped. Constructing a dock on private land requires a 5 year lead time for environmental impact alone and does not include hearings where your neighbors are given the chance to complain about it.

Jock Horner said that's what it looked like and the name stuck with tunnel development.

I'm confused on what model years these changes were made:
- Water pump side inlets added to gearcase
- Pull start in top cowl was deleted
- Chrome rib on top cowl was deleted
- Manual choke button in top cowl was deleted.

I have a 1967 950 SS mounted on a stand in the garden (yard art) and it has no pull starter or choke button in the top cowl, but still had the chrome rib and used a perforated trim tab for water pump pick up (prop blast). Two new coats of gloss back and an after market decal set and it looks like a brand new engine (115 hp) in the yard.

I think I see Tom Sheldon as the first person standing. Yes I recognize Billy Steele, and at first I thought that was him, but the Sonny I remember looked like him. Didn't Oliver work there too? That picture is from 56 or 57 with a Mark 75. I was only 16 in 56 and didn't get around much. The first place I drove my Lambretta to was Bob Sulkeys place, just to meet Don Baldaccinni. The first time I met Bob Hewes was at Dade Marine. I have trouble putting faces and names together sometimes. Give me a list of all in the picture. I know I'm forgetting some else that worked there.

In APBA SE class we were running 3 or 4 mph faster with stock Merc 500s than the NOA guys? Rules must have been very different.
