Never saw this piece before. Talks about motors made from 1949 thru 1956.

Most of the time, Merc racing literature only talks about the current year equipment. Describes the Mk55H type large skeg as a new product, but only mentions up to Mk40, then below it mentions both the Mk55H and 30H. This may have been something made up by one of the distributors rather than the factory.

Could have been...I believe this is in 1962 down in Miami the year my mom and dad got married. He won his class in this race and the trophy is about 5 feet tall. That trophy will be mine when he's gone. Not sure where he got his motors but he was pretty tight with Ralph Kozan in Chicago.

Just talked to my dad and he said he did race around an island so your probably right. In an earlier post I said he won a 5' tall trophy in Miami but I was wrong...that race was in Blue Ridge, Georgia that he won the trophy.

Talked to my dad last night and after looking at the pic again he doesn't think that was the first wing and doesn't really remember where the pic came from. Dave is still alive and down in Florida I believe although his health might not be so good because I didn't see him at Bob's funeral service.

By the different cowling and the fact that the wing impression does not bump farther out on the side and that the cockpit comes fully down to the wing impression, this is definitly not the first wing. The cockpit side is different from any other Switzer I have seen photos of. I believe this may be a wooden copy; if it is a Switzer, its the only picture of this boat.

Could this be a Switzer Wing prototype? Correct me if I am wrong, but those black engines (probably 1000"s) predate the fiberglass Switzer wings. I think when the glass wings first came out, they were powered with BP's and Super BP's with stacks. Could the Switzer's have been testing /experimenting with this crude version before tooling up for production?

This pic just happened to be in a bunch I got from him years ago and I thought it was a cool pic. When I asked him about the pic , his exact words were "I don’t remember that boat I don’t think it was the first version that I worked on and was raced at lake Winnebago" , that's all I know at the moment, I have sent him an email for more pics if he has any.

The white one with the blue stripe has my name on it! Always wanted to add owning a V8 outboard to my bucket list. I had been looking at going with a Honda BF200 (V6) weighing in at 588 lbs but if I can get 2 more cylinders at the same horsepower rating for a mere gain of 12 lbs (600 lb dry weight). My hat's off to Mercury Marine's effort on weight savings. Yamaha V8 (1000 lbs)? Too heavy and too pricey. Is there any info on the MSRP for these new models yet?

OMC used to sell a 3.6 300 with 1950's machining quality, was 400hp with a little detailing for the same weight?

Hang in the Jackie - that is just the start. The 350 and 400 Verado will go away in tme and I really feel we will see a 500 - from 4.6 L 500 is a walk in the park, especially with the valve train and related stuff right off the MerCuiser race engines.

So why are Merc pissing about with V8 of very low horsepower——- I have always loved the traditional Yank V8 auto motors——- simple, gas guzzling, slow reviving, easy to work on and last a lifetime engines.
If OMC could muster 400 from three and half litres forty years ago——500+ - should be a walk in the park today.
