When I came upon this picture, my memory bank immediately pulled an old story out of the rafters. I'd like to share it with you.
A long, long time ago in Oshkosh, Wisconsin a young lad by the name of Bob Hetzel was getting ready to start his work day for Mercury at Plt.#5 on the Fox river. The day's assignment included taking a small fishing boat powered by a 5 hp Merc to the course buoys and running some fuel flow tests. When Bob arrived at the course, he found there was a dude anchored right next to the lead buoy and was doing some casting. Bob carefully idled up the the boat, introduced himself and explained to the fisherman what he was assigned to do that day. Bob asked if the fisherman would mind moving off of the course for a short period of time. The fisherman explained that he was there first and had no intention of moving until he was damn good and ready. Bob went back to the plant and explained what had happened to his supervisor Carl Frazier. Carl told Bob to let it go for the day, but to get to the course early the next day so the tests could be completed.
Bright and early the next morning Bob went to the course and began his tests. As he is running the course he sees a fishing boat heading his way. Sure enough, it's the same fisherman from yesterday and he proceeds to anchor his boat right next to the lead buoy again. Bob idles over to him and explains that he is in the middle of running his tests and asks the fisherman to move. The fisherman refused again, but this time Bob said "Hey, you were here first yesterday, so I left. I am here first today so you should leave. I need to run my tests today".
Bob drove away and positioned his boat for the course, the fisherman didn't move. As Bob approached the buoy he heard a loud 'knock' in his boat. Soon he heard another and realized the fisherman had tied a large lead weight to his line and was casting it at Bob! Not wanting to get his head cracked open, Bob went back to the plant and told Carl what had just happened. Carl smiled and said he had a plan.
They got everything ready and about 30 minutes later Bob was on his way back to the fisherman on the course. He approached him carefully and then explained that he was going to run the course. He told the fisherman "I am going to drive back near the bridge and then turn around to start my run. If you are still here when I make my turn, those two guys are going to run the course in front of me". Bob pointed to the Wisconsin street bridge as two very Big, very Loud Offshore Raceboats, like the 818 in the picture, came out from under the bridge opening and started to rev their engines. Bob said it was a very impressive mixture of sight and sound.
Bob drove away, made his turn and looked..... he had the whole river all to himself, not a fisherman boat in sight! Don't you just love it when a good plan works. :D

Bob drove away, made his turn and looked..... he had the whole river all to himself, not a fisherman boat in sight! Don't you just love it when a good plan works. :D
Just a quickie, I think the name of the offshore boat that spurred my memory was 'No Dice'. I looked for pictures but had no success. I think it was an aluminum high sided rig like the 818 in the picture, anyone remember that craft? Maybe driven by Wayne Vickers?

Its too bad that this piece of history isn't being restored. Obviously it would take a large investment, but the hull is in restorable condition. It is COMPLETELY rigged just like the day the motors were removed. Here's what it looked like the last time I saw it at Clayton NY.

At least you'd have the three motors...lol Texmo's hull isn't as bad as the picture make it look. The deck openings were cut for some reason. The bottom needs a lot of work, as they tried a LOT of things to make it turn. Had speed, but wouldn't turn well. It had the largest skid fin I've ever seen!!!

I never even knew the years of the motors, the USMC had clouded my memory bank for four years, and I knew them all before I went to Nam. It was a real treat to go to a boat race again, even to just watch.

Richard H. Snyder(Dick) with Mercury Marine(Brunswick Corp.) in May of 1976, was credited with inventing & patenting the basic attributes of the "Over The Hub" Chopper propeller design, when coupled to a gearcase or propeller shaft, that introduces the engines exhaust to its leading edge... The fishing line cutting feature is also part of the overall design.https://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/pages/US4080099-1.png

[QUOTE=Mark75H;2948647]It was an experimental tuned exhaust.
No if I remember right - the exhaust had to be below the waterline for noise reduction at some races across the pond - so that "pipe" fed the exhaust back into the driveshaft housing and then exited below the so called "cavitation plate".

I don't recall there being anything unusual about Hill's Jones. It was a 20'er and like all 20'ers, it wanted to bite you if you dared push it past 105 mph. I recall that Hill agreed with that assessment. The Jones that Cooper won a couple of races with was an 18'er and didn't have that desire to go flying.

200 HP OptiMax SportJet Back in the day I was king of the Sport Jet installers. Besides the switchover at Whaler, I myst have done 15 OEm's that went nowhere - they would build a few boats and disappear. Two of the nicest were Packard in Sarasota and Velocity - I had Velocity's proto over 60 mph first time out - was an old 13 Allison mold if I remember right. Just before we glassed the tunnel in I added a bit of "up" at the back of the pump - the boat loved it. Two things I always wanted to do - a pontoon application and also stick the pump in a box on the outside of the transom - not my ideas, have to credit JFL for those. He did a pair of 90SJ's in a pontoon boat - one in each tube - boat looked like it had no visible means of propulsion!https://mercurymarine-gsdesign1.netdna-ssl.com/media/filer_public_thumbnails/filer_public/44/7a/447a21ca-b86c-49a9-b59b-e72466015de8/200-optimax-jet-drive.jpg__1000x750_q85_autocrop_replace_alpha-%23fff_size_canvas_subsampling-2_upscale.jpg123
