...always had "Merl" on his uniform... Merlyn Culver...pasted away back in 1974. Mercury's first sales manager. he renamed elmer's thor outboards "Mercury" in 1940 at the new york boat show, with carl's permission. was kiekhaefer mercury's first outboard distributor, out of his dayton ohio shop, up until the mid-60's when carl took it away from him & another major hardware store distributorship in florida(gainesville), and began shipping motors directly from the factory to the dealers. this was when carl built the kiekhaefer st. cloud florida
"parts" (and engines)distribution building on 441 there & a couple others in key locations...

Fujimo here is the Gainesville distributorship dealer you mention. Roy Ridgell (the younger guy in the photo) was working at Baird Hardware, and he later segued way into working at the Mercury Sarasota facility, and then later Mercury Lake X. Beginning his 30+ year career with Mercury Marine.

Think about 4 stroke vs 2 stroke block - no ports in the cylinder walls, so no need for intake or exhaust covers. Multiple extra parts not reuired to bolt numerous covers on. One head casting needed - 2 per motor, purchase the cams, gears, valves, springs, etc. Like that tranny for GM - 280 a day - thats a lot of $$$ in MM's pocket.

Merc has the reputation for special aluminum casting. They made the double overhead cam motor for the Corvette in Oklahoma

Designed by Lotus Engineering for General Motors,in 1988 the LT-5 was an all-aluminum 5.7 liter small-block V8 featuring radical 32-valve dual overhead cam heads; it generated 375hp and was hand-built by Mercury’s MerCruiser division in Stillwater, Okla. For the 1993 model year, horsepower was bumped to 405 with cam timing and engine porting changes. Further proof of MerCruiser’s production proficiency occurred when the LT-5 was awarded the automaker’s most demanding quality certification — GP3 Level 1 — the first GM engine ever to earn it.

The LT-5 became the most celebrated Corvette engine of all time, accumulating records along the way. In 1991, a slightly modified ZR-1, with a “bone stock” LT-5, broke three world endurance records at the Firestone test track in Fort Stockton, Texas. A team of drivers headed by Tommy Morrison broke the 24-hour endurance mark set in 1940 by almost 15 miles per hour, traveling 4,221.26 miles at an average speed of 175.885 mph. Two years later, a MerCruiser-branded ZR-1 took the checkered flag in the 24-hour World Challenge race in Mosport, Canada, with another ZR-1 finishing second.

Years back Tinypic was a free image hosting site, then they decided to charge. If you didn't pay them their ransom money your pics were gone. Happened to many.

How many years did it take before they finally deleted the overhang tang that used to be the downward stop on the transom? Verado? V8 and V6s? I used to laugh at the "T" handles used on the inlines and tried to imagine who had hands that size to cinch them down? My 1500XS I ordered in 1977 finally had hex head transom bolts rather than those T handles that ALWAYS loosened up. Hefty lugs and bolt bosses are the way to go! Mercury even specifies bolt head direction and sealant requirements on today's big models.

Curious what the Decibel level is in the cockpit at cruise and WOT compared to the previous preferred power options they've used.

This has to be the ugliest outboard ever produced. I got A KICK OUT OF THE Merc head of styling trying to defend this piece of crap, as bold and futuristic. It's kind of like the Ford people trying to convince us the eagle wing front end of the Lincoln was beautiful. You see how long that beautiful lasted.

I think the 600 V-12 Merc and the other latest models are where the industry designs are going. The 1960's & 70's look are classic looking, and might be future collectibles. But today's tech and design are steering the public's taste, toward the industry's conceptions.

These 21st century outboard designs, reminded me of the 1990's. When Steve Jobs and Apple were designing Mac computers with non-conventional radius curves. A visual difference from the preceding norm.
