This is Jerry Reed at the Nashville tunnel boat race in 1976.
I was working at an Arkansas Merc dealership, and came to Tennessee for the weekend.
Joined my Dad and family, and we went to the race.

Jerry Reed a publicity spokesperson for Mercury Marine at that time, got up into one of the cockpits for publicity photos. I remember my Dad, kidding Jerry about looking lost inside the race boat's cockpit. And Jerry replied with his own self effacing humor.

Jerry Reed was an accomplished guitar player, and did some guitar duos with the legend Chet Atkins.
And of course, Jerry acted in the Smokey and the Bandit movie, and wrote the movie's theme song.

This is Silver Springs in Ocala. A very popular tourist attraction in central Florida, back in the 1960s.
The spring fed water is crystal clear and cold. One of the main attractions was glass bottom boat trips.

What I remember about Ross Allen, was his exhibit of milking (extracting venom from) rattlesnakes.
They would then donate the venom poison for antidote research.

Those die cast heads and covers are the only parts not original on the engine. Those were missing when i found her so i located these and put them on just to get her buttoned up and insides protected from the elements.

And this one guy with a camera was taking photos in the pits, of every angle of the race rigs.
Reverse engineering by photos?

Methinks its high time the designation of an outboard was rethunk ——- makes me laugh now when Leek and Garbrecht got together and protested the “ COSWORTH OUTBOARD”. ONE OF THE REASONS WAS ITS OVERALL WEIGHT.
Just to refresh your memories the designation of an outboard according to UIM rules ———IT SHALL BE REMOVABLE FROM THE TRANSOM COMPLETE WITH ITS DRIVE.

Big mistake - we had a lot of WW2 veterans working there - some of the operators refused to run thier machines, wounds run deep. Spomeone spilled coofee on them. Another bunch at another time were touring the sand cast foundry. I got a call from someone out there, asked if they could see Plant 4. II can't approve it, but let me ask our plant manager. He exploded! "Son of a Bitch!" He said he had a call asking if these guys could come in and see our enertia welding operation for shafts. He said no way - so they were trying to get in through the back door by going to the foundry directly behind our plant and then figuring they could get in - didn't happen.

Dear Mr Photo Master FUJIMO,
See if you can find me a picture of a 1985 or 86 Chris Craft 311 That Mercury used in magazine ads with the moniker FLY FISHING. Had twin 200's on it with red and black stripes on the side of the hull. I bought it in 86 and kept it until I had Britton build my OceanHawk in 89. I used to have a poster of it In my shop but when I sold the building to Fine Lines it got lost.

We had one of the Mercruiser 1's. Dad bought a 23' V King new with a 140 io. Rigged at Skyway, built right up the river from Dave's. Little shop right up by 79th st. Broke 3 of those lowers pulling up skiers, no more than my sister & me - about 225 lbs total if we both went. Finally repowered with a black.165 io at Skyway, never had another problem.

Had to swap out RH gearcases for LH gearcases in the Proline warehouse back in the 1990's - 100 fricken degrees, motors still on the skids. They needed LH XXL's to ship some boats so Fond du Lac sent me some LH's to convert with - lots of fun!

I want to thnk everybody for the thanks especially willabee. More later why. The boat is an original 1957 Aristograft Sea Flash that I was very familiar with having been involved in it's sale from upstate NY to a friend in Florida who then sold it to Duke Waldrup where it sat for about 15 years. After I bought it 2 years ago in the middle of Covid, I couldn't travel to Florida so I had Bud Gann do the restoration. The motor was something else. 1959 MK35A with a myriad of issues. Although internally still with the factory seal & 125 - 128 Lbs compression, very good for a 40 c.i. motor, everything externally was bad. New external & internal harnesses, all new wiring, rebuilt starter & distributor & rebuilt carbs. Initially ran last year but with cranking issues. This year started fantastically, only to stall out shifting in to gear. I learned that the link connecting the distributor to the vertical lever that controls distributor advance was so far retarded, and no measurement in the service manual. A merc restoration expert in Maryland told me how to set the link to "cheat " advance in neutral, which I did & solved the problem. It now starts & runs better then new. The underway picture above was last weekend.

Now, why a Mercury. I grew up on Greenwood Lake, NJ. An early race supporter Mercury Dealer, who even sponsored Dick O'Dea was where my brother & I hung out, working for free as pre teenagers. I even took out Dick's BSH, Morphew hydro & KG7H without permission. Started racing Stock Outboard in 1953 at 14 years old. Progressed through all stock & alky hydo classes then at a Gulf Oil Hall of Fame breakfast was asked by Lou Eppel of OMC if I wanted to drive for them. Being the first from the East coast to be asked, I jumped at the opportunity, but secretly would have liked to have Merc power. OMC gave me a pretty good job, but again secretly I was having conversations with willabee about a ride & possible job with merc. He did explore the possibilities but the only positions available were test drivers & I was at a higher level, so that didn't happen. I enjoyed racing for OMC having the opportunity to race when the factory wars were great, many 225 milers, Europe, Parker, Havasu & many others. Plus the many friends that I acquired.

I've since restored many Mercury racing motors and as you can see my choice to power my wood boat is a merc. The motor paint was done by a Classic Car restorer in Florida, Bill Tetro.

I can indirectly attest to your restorations, or more accurately one sentimental favorite of mine and my brother — Boat 888. The first Molinari tunnel to become a part of the Merc's USA factory team. She went to Lake X, and my Dad drove her in the Gold Coast race. Her maiden race in the USA.

After that I think Miss 888's history becomes vague. I do not recall my Dad driving the boat competitive again after the Gold Coast Marathon.

Decades later my Dad's brother in Texas says he knows the where's about of 888. And you Mr. John, let my uncle Robert (Bobby) tow her to Tavares for the fall 2019 gathering. At Tavares, your/our friend Bill Seebold standing next to the hull calls you on the cell phone, and ask you, if he can seat inside the boat. And with Bill in the boat, I saw a photo-op in which to include myself in the photo. Later Rich Luhrs drives the boat in the event.

Mercury had two of these - my friend Tom Wenstadt bought one from Mercury, ran a 1500XS on it. Two seats, I went for a ride with him one day on Lake Winnebago, it would go across 2 footers like they weren't even there! He unfortunately blew it over down in Grass Lake IL at some boat drags, the UP trim stuck and before he could react it went over and was destroyed. Tom was unhurt, a few bumps and bruises.
