Looks like a simple show boat looking the background setting. Ya can see the red trim on the boat, so its meant to go together, but..it just aint right. Looks like some rich dudes crib showing off...

Roy - it sure is! But who would put a trailer hitch on a 36 hp VW bus?

If memory serves, Roy had a green VW bus when he was Manager of European Racing. Drove it through the mountains with a load of spare parts, props and tools pulling a Molinari. Of course they were up to 40 HP by that time.

So the answer to your question is ...... Roy Ridgell and Olegator. :D

Just a thought - from that view one could scale that boat - probably a 12" or 14" steering wheel, use that for a starting point and see what you come up with - length, width, sponson depth, etc.

WHOA!
Thats a old school 12 inch wheel think. Damn, maybe 10 inch? But don't matter. Got similar my Flatty. As yes that a "ring ring bell" the wheel spoke and had one my decades ago a tricycle, (and have one ALL my bikes the bars too!) and I can't wait (well ok can) for some water cop to pull me over and say "where the horn"? "Ring Ring" .."OK"? ...then hit the twin horns under the deck that raise the deck a blast! "Never grow UP!":D

Ya know Bernie that boat does not look like a real difficult build. I built two (A-B class) utility boats when I was real young( in high school) and I think if someone drew it up it would be fun. Problem is time and room in the shop as too many projects in the works. I am lookin forward to retirement! BTW I have a "86" OMC 140 all modded out with a 15" mid, coned low water pick up LU with more goodies that would be a nice fit with low C/G. Gary

WHAT - Build it and put an OMC on it! I'd rather put Hillary in the White House! M1000 BP studs up with adapter and Superspeedmaster - then one pass to see what 83+ feels like in that thing! 354913Has to be similar to my old ride - I could get into upper 80's with an 800/Superspeedmaster. I started working at Mercury in 1965 when OMC was "the enemy!" Then later on when a whole batch of OMC people came to Mercury and all we heard about was how good they were (excuse me, then why did they leave)? Loved the sound of a Super Strangler and had tons of respect for Charlie Strang - saw him about 15 years ago when Merc had hired him as an independent "referee" for some us vs. them product testing, and some time to talk and mostly listened to what he had to say!

About that same time Bobby Druery set a kilo record in SE in a little flat bottom McCall with a 50 on it. That boat was sitting on John's shop floor when I went to trade him my McCall tunnel for a new v-bottom. That little se boat was so light I couldn't believe it. I got John to build me a v-bottom just like it. Wasn't as light. Saw a picture on this forum of Bobby running through the kilo at Toano VA. in the little ftat bottom.

Biggest problem with the Chickenhawk (Blackhawk) drive was the dedicated boat bottom - any builder using it had t modify a mold for it to run it - plus it had a bit of a tendency to spin out if I remember right.

The prototype outboard Blackhawk wasn't just dual prop like the others. What made it more expensive and radical as an engineering design was the 2 SPEED SHIFT

may as well have a 2 speed if you add a gearbox as best way probably to use a planetary.
Blackhawk already had shift in the top box.

What was required from the hull other then mount the drive high enough?

Gene Whipp Remembered

By Fred Farley - Unlimited Hydroplane Historian
Beyond a doubt, one of the fastest disappearing acts in Unlimited hydroplane history was Gene Whipp of Dayton, Ohio.
Gene was a mid-season replacement as driver of Bob Fendler's LINCOLN THRIFT'S 7-1/4% SPECIAL (U-29) in 1973. His debut race was the President's Cup in Washington, D.C., which he won in spectacular fashion.
No other rookie driver had been able to win his first-ever Unlimited race in almost two decades.
Whipp then retired undefeated with a perfect record. In the years that followed, many owners tried to lure Gene out of retirement, but he rejected all offers.
The Gene Whipp story neither begins nor ends with the 1973 President's Cup. Whipp arrived on the Unlimited scene with a distinguished record in the smaller inboard classes on the always-challenging Mid-West Limited circuit. Following his one-time-only Thunderboat appearance, Gene achieved considerable fame as one of the sport's hardest working officials.
He raced inboards from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. The first boat that he ever drove in competition was a tiny 48 Cubic Inch Class rig, powered by a Crosley engine.
At his first race, Whipp was advised to imitate one of the veteran drivers who had quite a reputation. "Just do whatever he does and you'll be okay," Gene was told.
So, during the warm-up period for Heat One, Whipp followed the veteran around the race course as the field lined up for the start. Lo and behold, the entire field jumped the gun, including the veteran who was supposed to be so great!
"The hell with that," Gene spat. "From now on, I'm driving my own race!" And he did.
One of Whipp's earliest accomplishments was winning the prestigious Calvert Trophy at the 1960 Marine Derby Regatta in Louisville with the 225 Class BALLYHOO at age 18. Some of racing's greatest names are engraved on the Calvert Trophy. These include Bill Cantrell, Marion Cooper, Buddy Byers, Bill Sterett, Dean Chenoweth, and Jim Kropfeld.
Gene was the 280 Class National High Point Champion in 1969 with SHAMROCK. He came up a winner three times at the Inboard Nationals--in 1968 with VIKING MISS in the 225 Class and in 1971 and 1972 with HEAVY HAULER in the 7-Litre Class.
When hired by Fendler for the LINCOLN THRIFT assignment in 1973, Whipp certainly had the credentials.
Truth to tell, the LINCOLN was no great shakes as a competitor. At a time when most of the top teams used the more-powerful supercharged Rolls-Royce Merlin, LINCOLN THRIFT used a turbocharged Allison.
The U-29 was also a terribly ill-handling boat. But that didn't prevent Gene from quite literally "flying" LINCOLN THRIFT as if there was no tomorrow.
Whipp averaged 106.341 miles per hour for the 6-lap/15-mile distance in the President's Cup Final Heat, compared to 102.272 for Dean Chenoweth in MISS BUDWEISER. Then came Bill Muncey in ATLAS VAN LINES, Mickey Remund in PAY 'n PAK, Jim McCormick in RED MAN, and Charlie Dunn in MISS MADISON.
Sporting his trademark beard and wearing his HEAVY HAULER driving suit, Gene arrived at the trophy presentation ceremony, still not believing his good fortune: "What am I doing here?"
His victory certainly made a shambles of oddsmakers' predictions. The 1973 President's Cup was one of only five wins by Allison-powered boats in the entire decade of the 1970s. The others were by MISS MADISON in 1971 (twice) and by MISS U.S. in 1975 and 1976. Merlin-powered boats won all the rest.
The LINCOLN THRIFT victory was also the first by a modern cabover hull in the Unlimited Class. Not until the late 1970s would forward-cockpit hulls gain wide acceptance. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, following the crash of the ill-fated MISS BARDAHL of 1966, cabovers were very much frowned upon.
Following his retirement from competition, Whipp began a new career as an Unlimited Referee. In 1974, he promoted a new Unlimited race in his hometown of Dayton on Eastwood Lake.
Gene's skill as an administrator was evident in the successful series of Dayton races, between 1974 and 1977. His hand was everywhere. One would swear there were at least a dozen Gene Whipps running around, doing everything from refereeing the race to solving a logistics problem in the pits to picking up the garbage.
In 1979, Whipp also organized a new race in El Dorado, Kansas.
One of Gene's best friends in racing was Gold Cup winner Jim McCormick of Owensboro, Kentucky. McCormick suffered a severe leg injury when he was pitched out of the RED MAN during a test run at Miami Marine Stadium in 1974.
Whipp accompanied Jim to the hospital. As a favor to McCormick, Gene qualified RED MAN for the Champion Spark Plug Regatta and recommended that their mutual friend George "Skipp" Walther, who had no previous Unlimited experience, be brought in to drive in the race. It was a decision both Gene and Jim would regret.
On Miami race day morning, Walther was in the middle of his driver qualification run when RED MAN lost its rudder and spun violently. Skipp was fatally injured.
Following and as a result of the Walther tragedy, Gene never again set foot in another Unlimited hydroplane, at the request of his wife Chris.
In later years, Whipp turned his attention to Offshore power boat racing. As Offshore Commissioner in the 1990s, he rescued the APBA Offshore division from the brink of extinction and returned it to prominence. One important idea of his was to move the races--wherever possible--closer to shore for the purpose of improving spectator vantage points.
As an outgrowth of his interest in Offshore, Gene bought a marina in Florida and operated it under the business name of Gulfwind. He had previously owned two Carlin Audio stores in Dayton and one in Cincinnati.
Whipp founded the Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix races in Sarasota, which raised millions of dollars for charities such as the Special Olympics. As a result, there is a facility in Venice, Florida, named The Gene Whipp Sports Center for Special Athletes.
The racing world lost Gene Whipp in 2000 after a four-month battle with cancer. He was survived by his wife and their daughters Wendy and Deena. It should be noted that the athletic complex was named for Gene prior to his death.

'IT WAS!'----

Too bad AZMIDLYF is not using TinyPic on some of these great old pictures---

The year is 1972, the boat is the 36' Dry Martini

Mr. Kiekhaefer was making his own dual ram afterplanes, skeg-less lower units, tie-bars, gear drive accessory sections, stainless steel water-cooled headers ,etc--and winning a lot of races!!!

OK, can ya school me on a "skegless L/U"? I understand the disruption of water to hit the props, but steering?, and does a thin knife edge skeg front to a fatter rear for rigidity. You would think that it created a low pressure zone behind, (like side case W/P up)..suck water in and then hit the props instead of now not aerated? Only thing I can come up with is water skeg behind not hit at speed prop off the water, but water dragged forward to fill the void is still water? Get my drift? And why not try something similar a Whale Tail" but out the water and 2 foot away the props, and twin downward steer fins? I was in my 20's at that time too. Simple the "wonder years" of "innovation"!

Would be cool to see on a 21' tunnel.;)

Dave

The X dimension was great but the cost and lack of propellers along with weak internals killed it. I had one on my 24 eliminator and 650 hp would break the upper and blow the floor out of the gear. It was great with a stock 415 hp 502.

On a boat that size with multi engines, skegs are just going along for the ride.

Dang, ROBBY---I ain't that smart. We did pick up a mph or two--I always thought because the prop was running in 'clean, undisturbed' water. and some boats did have some steering/control problems:(

I became an aviator, and discovered the propeller of and aircraft is more efficient in the pusher position (dirty/disturbed air) than in the tractor position....Go figure???

When Fred introduced the new unit in the mid 80's it had a 'skeg'---:)

Here, Roy is running the boat in its first race, the 1966 South Florida Gold Coast Marathon, which is an endurance race from Miami to West Palm Beach & then back to Miami. This was the last year for the Gold Coast Marathon series. The Molinari placed 6th in its class with a Kiekhaefer Mercury model 1100 with stacked exhaust. The boat, number 888, owned by Carl Kiekhaefer, was co-driven & sponsored by Gene Whipp, owner of a successful Florida west coast boat dealership in St. Petersburg/Clearwater & Sarasota.http://i49.tinypic.com/19qkp4.jpg

Its a pretty thick subject thats for sure. On the Cessna Skymaster (called Bird Dogs in Nam) funny as you would think disturbed air off front prop. But then ya got the duo props on some boat motors and that works? Now have the forward facing prop on pods, under some boats? Give ya a headache! Now back to our regular scheduled program!

The fastest recorded by an inline six would be 136 & change - Merten in a Ron Jones hydro with a modified TII.

Barry Woods set an "S" class record in mid 73 at about 116 in a Scotticraft with an Evinrude. I'd bet the record he broke was set with a TI, I just don't remember who or the exact speed. I'll try to find it in an old Powerboat. Seems like Barry went three or four MPH faster than than previous record?

Bob Hering quickly took the record away from Barry by running 118 in a Molinari/TII.

Freddy Miles was never a boat builder he had a young Dave Burgess building boats for him Burgess had built all of bill Shakespeares racing boats so Freddy offered him a better job and he started working for fred at the end of 1969.The first boat ran in 1970 the picture of the Milesmaster with a Twister 1 Mercury looks like the same boat Freddy turned up with at Windemere for the 1970 powerboat record attempt week after his first run he scared himself a little he had too much lift and had to move his fuel tank and batteries as far forward as possible his fastest run was around 92 mph in fact all the outboard boats including James Beards marathon Evinrude powered Cougar picklefork which he ran at Paris 2 weeks before ran between 88 and 92mph.The only boat that ran faster was Bill Shakespeares OMC V4 boat which had a stepped hull running a 1to1 lower gearcase recorded 118.9 mph one way he ran his 2nd run with a failing engine his average was 104mph for both ways to get his record.356865

Thanks, I couldn't remember who Burgess was building boats for in 1970. When I said Miles was building his own boats back then I didn't mean he was sawing wood. I just meant he had his own design and wouldn't be driving something other than a Milesmaster.

I also should have mentioned that running 128 in the hull pictured would have been a real challenge. It's a full nose, bow high craft that probably would have been dangerous at 100!

I think this is the first Milesmaster (the yellow #5) to come to the states. Freddy ran it in Paris, 1970 and then Havasu the same year. It was what was used to create the Zonkercraft. Unless Freddie had two of them at the same time, this has to be the same boat that you saw at Windemere.
