I have to tell you that in the land of percentages —— outboards got 200% uglier in the quest of power,yet only 20% more powerful than before the revolution.
do not quote me pollution and all that crap as a reason . We knew for forty years the death knell of the two stroke had been rung and ignored . Maybe thats when the panic started . Mercury seem to have weathered the storm of mistakes after the Far Eastern invasion , well they are still the most expensive piece of kit in the world and the profit margins have always been showing great returns to investors . Surmazed just how many Suzy’s and Yams are sold in the states —- must be the hell of a difference in price .
Still, you only have to look at the “BIKE—CAR—TV AND CAMERA market . That gives you a fair idea of todays peoples priorities . Not the reasons though—you have to work that out for yourself.
Should you ever work out the reason HARLEY DAVIDSON ever sells a single old fashioned —noisy—thirsty—-outdated piece of crap when placed against a Far Eastern pair of wheels —- please let me know !!!!!! Yes i have owned a couple and have often asked myself WHY ????????

Once turned down a straight swop of a gullwing for a Fletcher fifteen with a 500 [50hp] Merc —- year was 1970and the complete outfit was worth $2,500 .
I have made better decisions in my life .

Very nice lady but immediately "Sammy, another one about some race boat". Sam gets on the phone, I ask him my question he nicely gives ma few tidbits but says it really was not one he had a lot of background on. I will never forget ........ "call Brownie young man, get to him before he's pushing up daisies. That SOB knows just about everything".

this was what was called COWBELL engine. it was a variation of the TWISTER and TWISTER 1. instead of exhaust going back into midsection and out thru gearcase, it dumped outside above garcase. imformation gained was most likely used in development of tuners used on later v6 engines.

Interesting uh? These big powerful outboards are pushing 'pleasure' boats as fast as tunnel boats with APX engines. The tunnel hull had a long run starting in 1966. Now it's back to 1965!

In a nutshell, unless they can seriously reduce the size and weight of these four stroke engines, the true tunnel is not top dog now. That is why the tunnel hull never was a success in the pleasure boat world. If they can't stay light and nimble they are disadvantaged.

Lots of tunnels and Mod VP when the 2 stroke v6 was around. Can't put those tanker 4 strokes on a old 18-19 tunnel. Big money where they put 3+ on the back of a boat. Merc just going for the payday.

At Boeing. I saw portable power tools evolve from electric drills with cords laying everywhere to compressed air tools with hoses laying everywhere to cordless battery power tools. Battery pack storage stations have become the new normal. I hardly use my AC power tools anymore. We found that the investment in robotic equipment and cordless power tools paid for itself with reduced health care costs for employees (strained backs, injuries, repetitive motion muscle fatigue, noise, etc).

not an amazing memory, just an OLD memory. just one of the few still alive. butch stokes, i think was also in this race. another tidbit, the raveau i was runnin, was one of the original 25000 mi boats that ran at lake x.

This was the Toronto Boat Show 1971. Article is from Canadian Boating magazine.

I went to the opening night of the show just to see this boat, then went back 2 more times just to imagine what driving something like this would be like ( I would have been 17 years old !!).

Mercury Canada gave the ride to Barry Taylor but kept the #177 on the boat for the 1971 season.
