I can think of at least a half dozen reasons, just off the top of my head, why the pair of 90SJ's in pontoon tubes would not be a good idea...

It worked great and accelerated great, safety was my main concern, fall of the front of a pontoon and you have no chance. It also was easy to dock, wish at the time there was something other than a 90sj.

I had Palm Beach Pontoons this close to ordering an engine - we were going to stress the safety aspect of no propeller - that grandpa could take the kids out tubing and they could get back in the boat without a fear of an exposed prop. The had a MCM powered pontoon engine pod that would have worked great!

Of all the pictures I've come across over the years, it looks like Yamato was the first to do this with their copy of the KG7H. The crescent above the nose and the just-behind-the-carb, flower pedal reed arraignment are the significant differences between the first Yamato and the KG7H

We had a 66, all chrome and silver was a great running motor, I agree on the colors of the 69. Restored a 9.8 - 110 for a Buddy few years ago he get alot of complements on it.

I'm pretty certain this is correct. 1961 was the first year of the 500. There were 400's and 450's made at the same time, probably didn't have the tuner or exhaust divided in pairs ... like the KG9 had 10 years before.

I owned 6 Merc 500s over the years. They were all short shaft manual start motors. They just kept getting better. Mercury addressed most of the problems over time. My 74 motor ran an honest 62mph on my McCall in SD class compared with maybe 55mph from my Raveau and my Curtis Craft in 1965.

Back in the day I tried to convince Merc Marketing to look at doing a 30 hp version of the 50, kinda like the MK 30 MK 55 scenario. Would have been the most gas sippin' strongest running 30 out there, and could have got rid of the 2 cylinder 402 slug. "Oh no we can't do that it would cost so much more with the extra rods/pistons." My counter was we would produce more rods/pistons/blocks/ etc. and the piece part cost would be less, less changeover because you could run them down one line, no more 402 hassles - smootest running 30, power trim option, etc. Needless to say never happend.

By 1974 the 500s had a lower unit that allowed them to run the stainless props from the 49in 3cyl motors. These bigger slower turning props worked very well in the reclassified D class. The only problems these motors had by then were fuel pressure and delivery with the Tillotson carbs and timing belt slop on the Thunderbolt ignition drive. Further development changed the carbs and the ignition to a flywheel system but I never got a chance to try one of those motors

450 came out in '62. I bought one & installed tuner before taking it home.

Bernie, the wall of water deal came out in 1965

1961---First 500 (first 'tuner'?)

1962----First 500 with Jet Prop exhaust

We called the tuner a 'horn'

2us70
06-01-2017, 12:53 PM
That tune horn actually worked. My Dad and I adapted one to a Merc 450. The boat picked about 3 mph. No other changes.

The 450 came with the block drilled and tapped (1/4-20) to attach the horn--

We had an older motor without that provision (might have been a 44ci Merc 400). We made an adapter plate from plate aluminum. Worked great for about a year but then the driveshaft splines started to fail. That adapter caused the driveshaft splines to not engage fully so Brooke Russell sleeved and pinned a slightly longer top end on the shaft. Over the years I suffered just about every common failure from breaking off the top of a crank to breaking out the rear bearing carrier in the lower unit and most of the stuff in between. I learned a lot and with the help of a few knowledgeable friends I got so I could make the 500s run pretty good and pretty reliable too.

I will have to admit that I probably made every tuning and setup mistake in the book on those motors. Hell,I probably added a couple to the book but it was all a learning experience and great fun.

I have driven several 15' Checkmates with J motors and if you can manage a 14 with one you have my admiration.
http://www.screamandfly.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=376464&d=1496354294...Had the exact same 14' CheckMate Bernie. Green metalflake. Louvered blue-stripe J-motor. Ran unusually well considering it's rounded V-bottom. You did a nice job cleaning that one up. Looks great.

It actually is a 1968 131, 13'. Orignally owned by the Kiekhaefer Corporation, and was a playtoy of Freddy hisself. Fred verified that for me when he recognized the deck mounted tach tube and the forerunners to K-Planes, built by JD Emerson at the Lake - which is cool because I know JD also. Fred sent me a "Dialed in at Lake X" decal, its on the dash. It says "dialed in at Lake X" and then is autographed "by Fred Kiekhaefer". During my resto process I found the 376469376470376471376472Kiekhaefer Corp property tags for the boat and trailer! The seats I had reupholstered but that back tank cover is original upholstery! Also has early tilt wheel Ride Guide! I did respray the deck but the rest was just buffed up. Bottom has about 3 feet of SuperGlide at the keel. Getting close to trying it with the 650XS, some rigging to finish. Check out those original 50 year old transom bolts!

A word of warning. Those MX13s did not play well with the 650 lower units. Lots of prop blowout. I found them to handle better with the big units on the 850s in G class. I got my 13' Action cheap because the first owner spun it several times and scared himself. I managed to make it better but every once in a while it would try to go sideways.

Maybe thats why there is a fin on one of the tabs? The boat had something bigger on it at some point in time, found big bracket bolt holes and a PT harness tucked away under the gunnel. I will work into the XS with caution. Thanks!

Fixed tabs so it will be trial and error - Make a run, loosen bolts, readjust, try again. Fred said he had them amde because it porpoised - I haven't run it that much but not porpoise now.

Thanks FUJIMO,

I think it was April 17, 1966. I came home on emergency leave from Nam because the Red Cross thought my mother was dying. I was taken out of the field on an operation. I only had the clothes on my back which were pretty dirty, and no under clothes. My shirt was modified with short sleeves. Not USMC issue. I landed in Miami on Easter Sunday 10 April 1966 and my dad picked me up. My mother was in a hospital in Lakeland, they were living in Lake Placid. We went to see her every day. On Sunday the 17th while driving around Lakeland I heard the unmistaken sound of alky outboards. We found the lake and there were lots of boats there. The most exciting part of the day was F-Hydro. There were about five running, maybe six. Dick O'Dea led most of the race but it was close. The weather was a little windy. At the finish the first three boats were about 20 or so yards apart. About 20 feet before the finish Dick and the second boat both blew over, but both crossed the finish. Dick set a new Five Mile record and the second and third boats both broke the existing record. Exciting to say the least. Mom made it and lasted another 10 years. I went back to Nam in July.

I do remember because I hurt my back in this race and I just had a procedure to control pain again. We pay for the excess of our youth in our old age.

Most of the pictures I have of my race boats were taken by that lady.

I forgot to mention I flew out of Okinawa on April 10th, Easter morning at 3AM. I landed at San Francisco at 3AM easter morning. Freaky..I wanted to get my one year old daughter an easter bunny, but they had none. So I got her an Easter Rat. Great family laugh forever.

Yup.

She grew up next door to me. Very nice family. She was like Lucy in Peanuts though. I never saw her looking as good as she grew up to be. I left in 1964 and never knew she knew the boat racers. I always had race boats in my yard too. About 20 years ago Treasure told me she came to her animal clinic. I asked her how she looked and she said absolutely beautiful. Well, I had to go to the boat show and find her. We had a nice reunion. Gary P. Had always been a good friend and the last time I saw him before I joined the Marines he was going with a girl named Linda and wanting to race boats. I missed a lot. Time sure flies, fun or not.
