1959, a few years before stacks were used on Mercs; even F Alky didn't have stacks at that time. Merc made a full open exhaust as an accessory for the Mark75H, but only a very few racers used them. Only the Anzanis and Konigs had megaphones at that time and even the Carnitis didn't yet have expansion chambers. By 1962 if you didn't have tuned exhaust pipes on your Alky, you were in the back of the pack.

There was an F Stock class in the mid-1950's but it faded out before the 75H was the big deal. I don't remember if 58, 59 or 60 was the last year of F Stock, but it never caught on and was dropped.

Very true, at 2.25 sec. but I was referring to 0.29 sec of the films beginning. The guy at the back of the boat. Mr K. didn't have a thick head of black hair. When I lived in Calif and hung with Skip Talbot Ted was always around. We even went to the National Drags in Perris in 67. Can't see his face too well but it looks like Ted Jones..It's been 53 years, and I could be wrong, but I know it isn't Mr K.

That is one of Teds boats but it is Johnny Reed driving. This was Teds most successful boat. Some of that was the boat which was the only one like it that Ted built. I raced against several of Teds boats but Johnny was always the toughest. Do you know how many race boats Ted built? I can only recall maybe 3 or 4 including his own ride. As a driver Ted was handicaped by his poor vision. He could not see the start clocks from any distance away. His work around was to shadow one of us who was known to be pretty good at hitting the start. I found Ted sitting just off my right hip several times.

Kind of surprised the cowl buckets were handled like this? Stacked like cord wood. I always treated mine like fragile butterflies and never rested on anything but pads or blankets. Any photos of the shop where these were molded and decaled?

Well seeing on how I worked in that building from 1965 until the mid 70's (after huge expansions), the barn was small OB assembly 3.9 to 35 hp. Upstairs was storage and fuel tank assembly. The one story at right angles to the barn was the parts area for assembly. The other buildings were machining areas with offices on the South wall. When I started in '65 as a draftsman, our engineering office was upstairs by the railroad siding. The rr siding leads to the sand cast foundry. The area where the trucks are parked was the MerCruiser room - assembly. Later an expansion connected the left hand building and that area all under one roof. Not yet built was the Heat Treat building next to the foundry. I remember when the barn was torn down around 1970. Our gear line was in the new area along the outside wall facing the barn. When the dragline guy dropped the wrecking ball, every gear grinder on that outside wall jumped and made a piece of scrap. I can still see our chief inspector, Joe Michalowski running outside waving and shouting to STOP!

Am I wrong to visualize, that crossing over any wake or choppy water, is going to create a shower spray for the driver.

And thing again, on a hot summer day of racing it might be a welcoming way to stay cool.

That boat was good enough to make it into Mercury's print advertising campaign at the time once it was painted and finished. Pretty sure it was just a kilo boat and John was the only one to drive it. Olegator would know better than me about it however.
