...the vazer package was ahead of its time bern. you know. ;) great running little closed cooling 1600 4 cylinder & unique new sterndrive when it was introduced in 2008. many went out of country/exported. o.e.m.'s here stateside thought too little of it. no pun intended... (p.s...r u sure those are vazers in the pic?)
As an Merc OEM Field Product Engineer up 'till late 2005, I was one of the lucky ones that got to do some Vaser installs at OEM's. When the paclage was suggested, we all got to put our thoughts on paper - guess what? Stillwater didn't use any of them. Things like one fluid for trim and power steering, a package that installed like an outboard, engine and drive as a drop in over a transom cutout, hell, I don't remember them all, what did we get - none of them. Was in Stagnetwater to test a prototype, couldn't outrun a 90 hp OB, 4 us us mostly outboard OEM guys were in the boat, and we broke the power trim, or boy, did they point fingers that day!

I think you are correct about it probably being 1971. Because Mike (William) Downard is in the photo, and late 1972 I think then Mike was no longer a Mercury factory driver. (A Gary G. decision).

On those older motors the top and bottom cowls were bolted directly to the motor. When the faceplate was removed ram air could pressurize the inside of the wraparound. On my first couple of 50s it was good for about 1/2 mph. Wasn't legal in APBA races. When they went to the suspension cowl setup it didn't help at all.
Seems like any of the photos of Merc's running in the early 60's have the faceplates removed. Why? Airflow to carbs?

1970s the Bass Tournaments became popular in the USA.

Mercury supports the likes of tournament fishermen like ... Bill Dance, Roland Martin, Jimmy Houston, and Hank Parker.

These 4 fishermen later venture into their own fishing/outdoor television shows. Starting in the 1970s or 1980s. Mercury benefits as a TV sponsor, reaching a larger marketing audience of men, women & young people.

Sidenote: Mr. T (Tennessee) Bill Dance would use the services of Shelby Marine in Memphis TN.
In the mid 1970's when I worked there, I worked on his Jon boat engines.

Been to several BASS tournaments, and Roland Martin had an air about him when he walked into the room. I will assume because of his accomplishments in tournaments.

Do a lot of business with Roland Martin and getting used to having heard from some of his customers that keep their boats out of his place on the big O. We have purchased a lot of G2 Evinrude engines and resold them. On another note, I’m trying to remember when I got my first T3 mercury. I believe it was at the end of 74 or maybe even early 75 and it made all the difference in the world on the big heavy L Martin, boat, that I used to race finally got it up over 100 and the acceleration was pretty good.

We lost Roy Ridgell to the fishing department when he left Como with his family——he was the go between the factory, Garbrecht and SWMF the GB MERCURY DISTRIBUTER. He was well liked and respected by all the drivers in europe ,. Even Molinari got on reasonably well with him too.
Was always lots more product sold around the fishing competitions than the circuit racing.
Was only ever competition between JONRUDE and Mercury at circuit level. Never was any doubt who ruled offshore . [OR FISHING BOATS].

It appears that the CT 15 racing version had a single piece add-on that was placed over the deck of the production hull? Always thought the side profile of this boat made it look like it was going 150 mph standing still. Too bad they didn't have a wider 2 person version of this drop-on for their low profile production hulls? It might have sold better with the add-on? There's a blue 16 ft version rotting away atop a shipping container in Port Orchard WA for years. All the Challenger and Contenders I ever saw were either blue or red metalflake.

Mercury's website states that the R drive skegs are canted in the opposite direction from propeller rotation. Why wouldn't they do that for all of their models?

...the cle's have always been offered, this new gearcase, as well as all the older cle's, in either cant you want, or no cant at all. depends on the application & number of engines, etc. the cle's have always been out of racing/hi-performance division only. they are surfacing applications, other engines are not...

The cones didn't last in bravos at 5K with 3 blade propellers grabbing on re-entry, why would anyone expect them to live at 6500 with larger diameter 5 blades grabbing more violently and harder on today's supercharged outboards. I have no issue with the DTS system, its very simple and smooth to operate from a drivers aspect. I hope they continue to improve the actuators.
