15 min left, carb nuts loose. I suppose someone from Mercury loosened them. Fact is he broke and lost and again a Mercury won. That’s racing.

I am guessing high frequency vibration is the culprit here. I don't think blue locktite was not on the market back then. I recall some of the alky racers using safety wire for that very reason.

Or maybe someone forgot to torque them! Or maybe if they had been running fuel injection it wouldn’t have happened.

Well.. I raced the Paris 6 Hours 1974 and remember very well when the overall leader (03 Scotti/Evinrude Rotary) passed me sometimes very close, but disappeared at the very end of the 6 hour race.
I also remember Jackie was not in the entry list for the race.
Maybe he was hiding behind the two rotary powered boats before the race.:)
I also remember the headlines after the race the year before (1973) when OMC and Merc raced the first V6 outboards.

I am guessing high frequency vibration is the culprit here. I don't think blue locktite was not on the market back then. I recall some of the alky racers using safety wire for that very reason.

Yellow contac cement in the tube was around though. Kept our dirt bikes running..

I was lucky there. My Dad and later myself worked for Southern Bell and I had a good friend who was a mechanic at Eastern Airlines. Thus I had access to both zip ties and locktite.

Thanks Gene....he got a 5' tall trophy for winning that race....will be mine eventually. I saw Bob Switzer won in the I class...my dad worked for them until the following year....times got tough and they had to downsize some so that's when my dad starting building his own boats and the rest is our history.

I knew Sam for many years when he came up to FDL with Mercury - he was put into the Snowmobile group for a while! First time I met him I was having some questions on the Merc 250 snomo exhaust elbows, a cast iron part. As Chief Inspetor, I took the layouts over to Sam, his only comment "machine a couple if they clean up use 'em. Wouldn't sign the deviation - but we used them anyway. Musta worked, we built thousdands of them.
I never knew until later that he was the designer of Jim Rathman's Xterminator go kart. Those bring huge money today if you can find one.
For those who may not know, Sam is no longer with us, passed about 3 years ago.

Brunswick Marine Power - that was someone's big idea that went nowhere. The telephone operator would answer the phone that way and the people on the other end would say - they were trying to call Mercury, must have the wrong number. Tes by the way I think ended up with 50 years at MM - she was a big contributor to the 25 year club, which I don't even think exists anymore.

I see that John Steinbeck passed away. Might you know when? Sad to see this, and of course many others who were part of in that great team photograph. Post #16431.

I have seen posts by Marty B. (a friend of John), that John Steinbeck is alive and doing fine.

But we do know some of the Lake X alumni like Bill Sirois, John Bakos, and Roy Ridgell are deceased.

I ran Around The Beach in 65. I was in Nick Chapman's first South Florida built boat. I finished but the boat was pretty well junk at the end. Nick built me a stronger one just like it that I ran until 68. That was the last flat bottom Nick built. He offered me his first V-bottom but I passed on the offer. WORST DECISION of my racing career. Johnny Reed won the class in the 66 Gold Coast with that boat and pretty much beat me with it until I got My McCall.
