When I'm logged in I have to click on the JPG title to see the picture, then X out of it. Not logged in I see everything. The little boxes are hosted by another site that you have to be logged in too to see. Maybe I'm not paid up.. Will have to check..

Or as I used to call it, the Between The Bridges race. Good times, used to go out to the spoil island off the end of the Biscayne Canal (104 st.- 105 st.) & watch 'em. That, & the start of many GCM's. First island with trees south of 125 st. bridge, west side of channel. Grew up on that canal, along with Brooke & Ronnie Russell, Ricky Lindheimer, Alan Revell, & Dr. Burns & his daughters - Robin & Cindy. They were my next door neighbors, ran a long deck 223 Formula #23 (pre T-Bird) with a pair of Holman Moody small blocks in a few offshore races. I think they were one of the few boats that finished the incredibly rough Bahamas 500 that the Miss Maritime turbine boat won. If you ever saw Robin & Cindy, you would remember them - esp.Robin :D

I think Walker Forge out of Racine - they made OB steering arms for Mercury also. Connecting rods came out of Rock Falls IL, and Modern Drop Forge out of Blue Island IL. As Chief Inspector I made many trips to those vendors on quality issues - the Rock Falls people were bad - good price, which is what purchasing was always looking for, but scrap rates were horrid. Put the 622 and 624 rods over to Modern and our scrap rate went to just about zero. They were an excellent vendor, as was Walker. Quick side note - we sanded the I beams to remove the forging die lines -sanded after machining - they were sanded the length of the I Beam, not quite polished. One night some guy sanded a whole batch across the I Beam - stress risers everywhere! Ended up throwing a huge amount away as to resand them made the I Beam too thin. Paid dearly to get the vendor to get us new forgings so we could start over. Our plant manager Bill Page was furious - and of course inspection got blamed for it - I got blamed for a lot of stuff I really didn't have control over - hell, that job even had a visual reference posted how to sand them, but the operator thought he could do better and beat the job rate which I am sure he did - most of those jobs were known as "creamers" anyway, easy job rate so we could get a good part.

Because it me in George Griley's Glastron, my buddy Keith Jobson that helped in our pit crew and Carl K looking on while we fueled and were leaving the pits. I think my girlfriend (now wife Bonny) took this photo.

Man, you are good!
The young guy was Kieth Jobson a good friend of mine from Coral Gables. I talked to him a couple of years ago.
Carl was looking on and was pissed at me for running Michigan props. He told us we were running his engines too hard and we would blow them up and make Mercury look bad. We ran the 6 hour and a week later the 9 hour and never had to touch a motor other thn tighten one screw in a distributor cap.

This tread is the best ever, so much info and so many old co workers telling us so much cool stuff. Love all the motor and development info, racing pics etc. One thing that has seemed to be left out was the other stuff developed to make these boats run the way they do.
Rideguide steering, 101 grease, Powertune, fuel stabilizer, etc, etc. ;):D
Thank you guys for all you have done and all those that have helped. :)

The Sandy Shoes was one of my favorite races as it was just like the Gold Coast Marathon, except it was all outboards.
I think I won first overall in the Sandy Shoes when you first ran it. Richie Baiz helped me build up a boat given to me by Bill Critchfield.
I was running Dade Marine by then and we were dealers for the Sabre boats he was building, We did a 1/8 inch plywood deck covered by a brand new material called Kevlar. George Griley supplied the Mercs with SSM. I drove the first day and won that leg. George ran the second day, got lost and came in second, but our time overall was good enough for first.

My first boat race was in the spring of 1964 at the Sandy Shoes. That was the only time I ever ran that race. I drove Brooke Russell's car and trailer up there a year or two later but never got the chance to run it again. One of the times I was there the race was between Mike Gordon and Red Wahl in his hydro. That might have been the last time it was run and the only time I ever heard of inboards being included. Red started the south run way over on the east side of Indian River in the shallow water. When he got to the first bridge he said he was converging with Mike who had run down the channel. Red said he decided to give way since after seeing the glasses Mike was wearing he wasn't sure Mike would see him coming. Don't remember who won that one.

How a Mercury outboard starts life...Raw Materials...Engine blocks start life at Mercury Castings. A business unit of Mercury Marine that produces castings for the parent product line of marine engines & components which began 70 years ago... This recycled aluminum from the machining process, is sent to Mercury Castings to be remelted. The resulting molten metal is cast into engine blocks & other components...http://www.sportfishingmag.com/sites/sportfishingmag.com/files/styles/medium_1x_/public/images/2016/01/image-1-shavings.jpg?itok=GQkdREjF

...Lost Foam Control Station...Most engine blocks Mercury produces start out as a foam template, stamped with a unique engine serial number, that stays with the engine the rest of its life. The ceramic coated foam pattern is placed in a crucible, that is filled with sand and then compacted...http://www.sportfishingmag.com/sites/sportfishingmag.com/files/styles/medium_1x_/public/images/2016/01/image-5-lost-foam-control-station.jpg?itok=FvPpZLMf

...Lost Foam Pour...Using "Lost Foam Casting" to produce intricate single piece engine parts isn't new. But Mercury Marine put a new spin on improving the manufacturing technology to optimize its outboard technology & quality. In this process, molten metal is poured from a holding furnace through a Sprue. The molten metal melts the foam & assumes its shape, replacing it with the Mercury proprietary aluminum alloy...http://www.sportfishingmag.com/sites/sportfishingmag.com/files/styles/medium_1x_/public/images/2016/01/image-4-pour.jpg?itok=yHjbrwvK

...Engine Block Machining...This Mazak Machining Cell machines Verado in-line 4 cylinder & in-line 6 cylinder blocks along with their bedplates. The blocks are machined in stages - Premachining...Qualifying Machining...and Assembly Machining. These different stages require the block to be unloaded and loaded onto different fixtures, to allow certain features to be machined.http://www.sportfishingmag.com/sites/sportfishingmag.com/files/styles/medium_1x_/public/images/2016/01/image-7-engine-block-mazak.jpg?itok=Q7MMGETN

...EDP Paint Line...The powerhead components for Mercury Outboards and MerCruiser engines travel along a conveyer through Electodeposition Paint booths(EDP). This is an important step in Mercury's corrosion protection process. The powderpaint topcoat is harder, thicker and tougher, than conventional paint. In the final step, the components are cured in an infrared oven...http://www.sportfishingmag.com/sites/sportfishingmag.com/files/styles/medium_1x_/public/images/2016/01/image-9-paint-line.jpg?itok=POi0ijAP

...Assembly...Eventually engine blocks are married to other engine components on the assembly line. The engine block travels from one station to another while assemblers attach the correct components at the correct time.
