It was '71 or '72, don't remember, I was racing a Mod 1 Polaris Playmate with the local Hoppman Bros. race team, we got to practice on the track. Coming down the hill my tach only went to 8000, and it was already there halfway down the hill! Race day I qualified and was on the starting line, someone taps me on the shoulder and pulls me off the track. He had a letter from USSA banning the 12 inch track machines - my Playmate and one by Artic Cat - to dangerous it said. Bull****, they couldn't be beat - I was not the best driver in the world and usually beat myself! So ended my snowmobile racing career.434284
Man did things ever change in the following 5 years with the introduction of twisters, srx, and txl. I guess cat and doo had big transformations in those same time periods as well. Today its tuff to tell the difference in something new vs 10 years old other then the turbo outbreak. If the fastest boats are averaging just shy of 80mph, they must be running in the low 90's on the straights. Looks like some run in the high 70's.

I just did the conversion and it looks like the winning boat in that race is about 435472what my SD boat ran in 1975.

Yes the fastest boats are running just under 100kph - 80mph average speed. Must be running a little over 90MPH at the end of the straights to average that speed for the RACE; they do "jetty" starts.
Didn't know SD was running over 90mph back then

That is what my metric converter says. The boat in the picture I posted is running right at 62 mph on my Keller when the picture was taken.

You are correct, memory failed me on the conversion.
It is close to SD speed.

The question comes back to whether there is utility and fun in spec classes even if they go less than 100mph.
In my opinion, spec classes show driver skill above other factors and the speeds are irrelevant

Apparently they run these 60 four strokes with the gear case virtually out of the water and external water pick-ups are allowed.

I thought those gearcases looked really high in the photos. Kudos to them for thinking out of the box for external water pick-ups and not being fixated on what "stock" means. Their decision on the water pick-ups is a lot smarter than the APBA guys who were DQ'd for using pre-hardened (worn) impellers in their water pumps only to be "caught" by moronic inspectors who micro-managed trivial issues like this one. One of the foremost issues why I quit racing. What does one of these 4 stroke / 60 hp "SE" hulls cost these days? My guess would be $10-$15K?

so whats the problem with the sst45, way cheaper, large class that has lasted for years.
In typical UIM EU fashion that class with the 60 will disappear over nite if Merc stop making that engine.

The Merc 1500s had a problem with water pressure issue. When they were run at very high transom heights on some boats they would cook the top cylinders. I am pretty sure the 1500 and the 850 shared the same gear case castings and used the same water pumps and had the same water inlets on the strut section. The difference between them was in the gear ratios. The 850s had a higher reduction ratio enabling them to use the same props as the 1500s. A similar situation to the 3 cyl Merc 650s and the 4cyl 500s. All of the propellers I ran on my Merc 500 powered SD boat were taken from my previous 650 powered EP boat

This photo reminds me of a quick story. I was at the Lake when Mr. Alexander and others were working on this project. It was about 5 in the afternoon, I was in the office catching up on a couple phone calls, Mr. Alexander was in the same office. My cell phone rings, it is a customer with a pair of big Mercs and he is having problems. First I asked how he got this number - says the President of the boat company involved (shall remain nameless) gave it to him. The guy is a retired aeronautical engineer and everytime his engines fart he is on the phone. I listen to his questions/problems, etc.; Alex is taking this all in. I finally decide to get him into a dealer in his area and that seems to settle the conversation.
As I hang up, without thinking I say something like "Damn retired engineers, can't satisfy them for nothing!" Alex looks at me with a big grin - we both had a good laugh over that!

I've had "earmuff" flushers for many years. What's this thing for? Looks like a cross between some kind of medical heart valve device and something you'd use on a BBQ for meat temperature.
