In 1970 every piece of alluminium that came out of Oshkosh was " SWIRLED", foot throttles, steering bars---------I had never seen it done before---------but I bought a set of discs to fit in the pillar drill--------been doing it ever since.

More likely a Mk40, KG9's didn't generally come with the rewind. Diecast clamps, but sandcast block screwed on clam shell cover.

I think you are right on the M40.
In 1958 at Dade Marine in Miami, we had 2 KG9's, both had rewinds, and one KF9, no rewind and gear drive mag. I think on the first KG9's it could have been an option. The boss told me I could have them as no one would buy them anyway. My friend and I had a good time with them.
I never saw a plastic cover on a WA- 25, or die cast (fat) clamps. I remember them having the same clamps and exhaust housing as a Mark 20. I think the die cast clamps were gone by then. We called those clamps on the M40 forged clamps. The KF9 did have die cast clamps, or the fat ones, at least the one we had did. Mercury didn't waste time with board meetings changing things that didn't hold up back then. ECK was the board. We had a lot of Wizard 25's come and go thru the shop. We even put a WA 25 crank in a M58 and made a sleeper 25.

This engine is a KG9-1. Sho ain't no MK-40. Only other possibility, a KG9 updated with newer rewind.

The KG9 was 40 c.i. & sand cast block. It evolved to the MK40. The Western Auto 25 was actually the 30 c.i. powerhead eith only 2 openings in the reed cages on both sides & just a cover plate over the intake ports rather then the traditional port covers & different carbs. This came in the mid 50's whereas the KG9 was early 50's.

Later, Freda maintained a home in Winter Haven, for the next 52 years, until her passing at age 95, on Febuary 11, 2005. She had had a stroke 4 years prior, which paralyzed her entire side. Her daughter Helen, who was a nurse, cared for Freda until the end. Helen passed away in 2012, of cancer. The natural Inlet to the Gulf, in the above photo, otherwise known as Midnight Pass, has not existed since about 1983. Nature filled it in. Tens of millions of dollars were wasted in an attempt to keep it open via dredging & pumping over the years, to no avail.

They didn't work - first version didn't have enough hp to run it. Second version - too much prop drag on higher hp, like maybe Twister 1. I remember seeing a crapload of the version 2 in the scrap bin at Mercury one day in early 70's - Plant 12 Engineering used to bring their scrap over to our bins at Plant 4 for remelt - so we got to see what was going on. Think that was Doc Morgan project that went nowhere, like a bunch of other projects - I knew Morgan's draftsman/designer. After we retired he used to say nothing he ever put on paper ever made it to production! They did have a bunch of patents issued though.

Yep - you're right. This photo would have been before Charlie's time - he arrived around 1969 in FDL working for Billy Steele ("The Freckled Pretzel!) Charlie only was there a few years, , didn't hit it off with Steele. Charlie had a 428 Mustang - made the mistake of passing E.C. one day out on 41 at excess MPH. E.C. knew the car, and read C.B. the riot act, Charlie ended up in the Merc construction dept. then quit and went back to Pensacola. We remained friends over the years - he passed a year ago.

Its there just straight up and down, has the yellow paint like the main rotor on the leading edge.

I'd love to see some 1980's brochure material. As an 80's kid, I used to collect them. I called them my "boat books." I got them at each year's visit to the Detroit Boat Show. They're long gone now, but I would really like to have them all back again someday.

I want 1978 thru 1987 if I can find them all.
