Cool stuff BUT. FUGIMO started this thread and has provided us with some amazing and probably never seen before stuff. Great to reply with a pic or two but pages of stuff kind of high jacks the best thread ever. Would be a shame if FUGIMO quit posting because someone highjacked his thread. ...Test run at Lake X by Fred Kiekhaefer, Brett May, and others on a Mirage Tunnel, at about 134 mph, spinning two 34'' cleavers...the gearcase was powered by a standard Mercury Racing 2.5 ProMax EFI powerhead. It was also tested & built as a 150 h.p. counterpart. Only two running/operating complete engine prototypes were built. It was a unique clutching device 2-speed automatic gearcase. The engine drove two counter-rotating propellers on the same axis, like the MerCruiser Bravo Three sterndrive. Unlike the Bravo Three, the props were sequentially shifting. On initial acceleration, the rear propeller would free-wheel, while the other spooled up quickly. A computer controlled hydraulic clutch system automatically engaged the second propeller, when the engine reached a preset torque setting, at approximately 4000 r.p.m. This enhanced holeshots in a big way. Water pickups were built into the removable skeg. The cost of the stainless steel "girdle" skeg was expensive. The full surfacing gearcase was designed to run with the "full" torpedo above the water. The water running beneath the propeller hubs and torpedo improved propeller effeciency and eliminated torpedo drag. The prototypes were only presented to the public one time. Once at the Miami International Boat Show, and once at the Sydney Australia Boat Show. Mercury Racing produced & initially introduced the prototype engines/gearcases at a $2,000.00 upgrade price over the same single propeller version motors of the day. A combined limited market application & cost of production, stopped Mercury's promotion of the outboard.

There was an F stock class at that time, as well as a production requirement in the normal alky classes; X was the exception.

For the most part it ran in F alky and X alky/UIM. It came with set up instructions for gas and alky.

Yes it actually was an approved "F" stock class but not ever run. Most of the 75H's went to guys who converted them to Alky & raced as Sam said, F or X alky, but X class wasn't very big other then record runs.

you know what I would like to learn more about is when Mercury produced a number 8 Speedmaster to go on the T4 engine I want to know the difference of it between a number. 4 Speedmaster and how much bigger it was and how it performed

You have good equipment to enlarge that picture and maintain the resolution. If I remember correctly, the Cowbell Twister was introduced moments after the red strip twister appeared, but before the blue stripe T1. The Cowbells that I saw run, ran exceptionally well and seemed to outrun the T1's on the top end. I have always wondered if the Cowbell was killed off because of the noise, being that the T1 was considerably quieter?

340652340653 These two pictures represent my small contribution to Mercury's racing history. The first is from 1970 of the boat that won the last SE National Championship with a 44ci 50 Merc. My self and Johnny Reed were first and second. The second picture is from the 1973 Nationals. This was Mercury's last hurrah in SE. Bobby Drury won (that's his wake) and I came second. Both of us were also Merc 650 powered. After this OMC pretty much took over SE class

Jeff didn't run SE until after he was hurt in his Mod U in 1975. He did run my EP for a couple years after I went to college in 1985. When Danny Critchfield was killed he stopped all together.

I tried that v-bottom McCall in SE once in 1974. It was real fast but I could not get it to turn even on a wide open course like Eufala. I think I was lucky that the motor lost the alternator cause if I had actually raced it like that I probably would have gone on my head one more time.
