I was Chief Inspector then and the only method of testing was to break one in a press - once per shift. Figured once they got in on Hickory, they would be able to weasle their way in to see the friction welding operation. Didn't happen! We also had many WW2 veterans working - when Japanese did come thru, they would spray them with machine oil, spill coffee, drop parts - there were many hard feelings still present.

Stainless on the outside steel on the inside so it can run rollers on it, same for all manufactures.

Merc had one piece steel for years that were hard chromed on the outside, fine for freshwater but salt?? ( great for racing)

OMC had friction welded drive and propshaft in 68 3cyl 55 for sure, trying to think if any earlier?
Then 69 everything that was thru prop exhaust.

I have struggled on whether I should post this internalMercury Memo from 1968. Dick Snyder gaveit to me years ago.I now feel that itshistorical value, in showing that Mercury Hi Performance Products that openedits doors in 1973, should be shown.HiPerformance really had its real roots starting five years prior.

This memo shows how Dick Snyder saw the value of racing andwanted the company to capitalize on it. The names are mostly familiar and were added to, prior to 1973, with thelikes of Jim Merten, Jim Kubasta, Tom Stickle, Richie Powers, Bill Allen andmany more.

I had 2 1/2 inch ski spacers on mine, and one inch riser blocks to get some ski pressure. 5 ply traqck if you left it outside in zero weather it would burn up the belt before the track would go around. Bullet proof driveline - I had a lower gear ratio and would pull a fish shanty with ease. Sitting on the muffler hade for a warm ride - you could wrap potatoes in aluminum foil, lay them in by the muffler, and bake them while you rode! We made most of the parts in Plant 4 - crank, rods, block, chaincase, fan housing, etc.

Bernie-there were 3 six engine offshore boats--powered by Mercury. None were successful. Do any pictures exist for the third? I'm sure Mike knows. (Or was there a big 'cover up')?:)

No need tell me about above in bold! Had a 74 Switzer SS17 with the new XS 1500. Boat built Bob Switzer special, Ralph Kozan massaged the motor, rigged by (King of the cushion Outlaws Sprints cars, Jim Moulis ran Fox lake harbor), horizontal race rams, trim only no tilt. Ran a surface 2 B SS 14x28 cupped, and damn sure tore up the LU case! Simple needed more "meat" Tried then 4 sit screws (pinned) but cant fix that expanding case. Still ****house fun that boat, and damn! Sure got the girls asking "take me for a ride", and after.."got to ride them"! Speed, fun, "hold my beer", is COSTLY, but worth it!

These six engine boats did not appear until the 1971 season. At the end of the 1970 season, I had run out of SBP LU parts. Obviously the SBP lower unit would have been ideal. With it's choice of gear ratios. low water pickup, and props. But it was done! Kaput! Fini! And it had a predicted life of only 4 to 8 hours--

The MC-1 was a shot in the dark. No large props were available. Only 2 gear ratios were available. And it was not legal!!

The only choice was the fishing motor lower unit--and we had been running the left hand units since 1967---(with bronze carriers)---


But---I started all this looking for pictures of the Six Engine Transatlantic boat!!
Shouldn't be hard to find---it was 50' by 15' and had six V-6's on the transom!!
