Everything...The clamps are suppose to be in front of the carburetors, but that puts the decals in the wrong positions.

A. Normally I6 has 3 clips, not two.
B. If it was for a BP stacker (as the flutes suggest), the join would be on the Port side! I recall a BP stacker had 6 clips in total?
C.Maybe for a Quincey?
D. From what you can see in the pic, the cowl appears to be elliptical and symmetrical with no "front" as we know it!
It's clever, what ever it is :)

It attached to the top and bottom cowls not to the wrap-around. Mercurys used the same basic cowlings for decades. My first couple of motors the cowls were bolted solidly to the motor. You could attach a steering bar directly to the bottom cowl pan and access the carbs by just removing the wrap-around. Later motors got a lot more complicated because the cowls were suspended by rubber mounts but still used the same wrap-arounds.

Okay, maybe somebody can help me out here, I swear in this thread, somewhere in the 1000+ pages, that I saw a gearcase prototyped in the 1950s by Mercury that had a FORWARD facing propeller, like the newer volvo penta outdrives. Am I dreaming? Can anybody link me to that image? I swear mercury tried this already in the 50s....

Merc never made a "tractor" unit, but others did. Its not here because its not a Merc product. There are pictures on other threads

Although it does 'tab' into the top cowl, those face plates did not attach to the bottom. There is a knob that is slightly visible in the picture at the bottom of the face plate that pushed in at 9 or 3 o'clock and locked at 12 o'clock. I had a 1968 100hp that had that face plate and I remember it well.

Yes Mercury did make a “Tractor” unit. Never went anywhere. It was displayed with all the other speed masters, including the twin shaft, at Racing years ago. Don’t know what happened to it.

The TV show "Route 66" did an episode at the McCulloch outboard test center in the early 60s. Looked just like that. Also in black and white. I was given a complete box set of all the episodes of "Route 66" several years ago and I watched that one again.

Had practiced on the SnoBol, running with the local Polaris dealer team - thier new '71 sleds couldn't run with my '70 Playmate, I was a 12" wide track and the new sleds were 15". Anyway, race day, I'm on the starting line, ready to go, somebody taps me on the shoulder and motions me off the track! What the hell? Referee shows me a letter from the United States Snomobile Ass'n - they had outlawed the 12" track machines only days earlier - too dangerous. Bull ****, they were still beating the new factory sleds. So ended my racing career, I couldn't afford a new sled.

All about the track speed, take more horsepower to turn a 15" track over a 12". Up here in the mountains with the 2 and 2 1/2" tracks the thing was to drop and roll the chain case to provide more clearance between the track and tunnel. 5/8 to 7/8" made a huge difference.
