Yeah...I was watching when George went. I think it was decided that the skeg sheered off of the gearcase. Boat just suddenly went sideways and disintegrated.

Heading out to Lake Winnebago, one bridge away from "The Checkerboard Building" (The beginning of Mercury Hi-Performance) at Mercury Marine Plant 33 in Oshkosh, WI. These two pics must have been taken by someone on the chase boat. Extremely cool!

As a kid my mom would drag me shopping at that Park Plaza mall in the background, and I used to look up river from that bridge and see all of the outboards and sterndrives on dock test screaming away in the middle of the winter, the Fox River only open where the thrust of the engines on test kept it from freezing. Very intriguing as a 9-12 year old kid, and imagine seeing something like this cruising down the river as a kid! Schwing!

Not a boat - but here is the Fond du Lac facility Plant 4 363339on Hickory Street in 1960 - looked the same when I started in 1965. My product engineering drawing board was on the left wall, second floor, above that railroad siding. The wall windows were covered floor to ceiling with curtains with the round KM logo, wish I had a few yards of that stuff today. In the summer it was hot, in the winter when the wind blew, snow would drift in through the cracks in the window frames. We built up to the 35 hp here, the big motors were still in Cedarburg. White two story building in the far left corner is Plant 8, the sand cast foundry. Double click the photo for a big pix.
In the space between the barn and the other square building, an addition was added, I think 1967, same size as the existing square building. The gear and clutch cutting and grinding line was on the East wall, the grinders being right at the wall. When the barn was torn down, I think that was '70, they came in with a wrecking ball to knock it down and then bust up the old concrete. The first time he dropped that ball, the whole existing building "jumped" - every grinder on that wall ran a piece of scrap when that happened. I can still see Joe Michalowski, our Chief Inspector, running out the door yelling for them to stop!

I remember that boat. Jeff was running it when I got my v-bottom McCall. There was another guy from up around Lake Okeechobee running a similar boat in SJ. I never got the chance to drive one of those things. Bobby Soles always ran pretty good in U class in one with a Chrysler stacker. It was a time of transition and a lot of different designs were being tried.

First race I ran against Jeff was in A Stock Hydro, around '61. I think he had been running Stocks several years at that time.

I ran against him in 59 in ASH. He was also running ASU, BSU and BSH. He was my first idol. He had the best looking boats and either he or Billy Hutchins or W. T. "Bill" Hutchins would win. He quit Stock classes shortly after that. I was lucky enough to make friends with big Bill Hutchins. We helped each other out a lot. I would get him special A motor parts from my junk pile at Dade Marine, and he gave me props and tricks.. I never knew Billy or Jeff that well, but I did know Lois, who married Tom Sheldon..Little known but Bill also raced motorcycles.

He was first hurt in Wally Qualmann's twin Dutchman at the Stadium testing. Then in the sit-down Scat Craft S in Belle Glade. That boat was terrible. Either stuck or trying to blow over...then it did. Then finally in his Scotti U in Tallahassee. That's when he slowed it down to SE.

Bell Glade was nuts. An hour of back and forth in the Rim Ditch canal with a 3 pin turn at one end and a 1 pin turn at the other. I still suffer occasionally from a back injury from that 1 pin turn. Boat swapped ends under me.

Bell Glade was nuts. An hour of back and forth in the Rim Ditch canal with a 3 pin turn at one end and a 1 pin turn at the other. I still suffer occasionally from a back injury from that 1 pin turn. Boat swapped ends under me.
And that is not a hospital you want to spend time in...ever.

Roy was the first Mercury employee I ever met. Phil Young and I had to go to Sarasota and pick up a couple Speedmasters. Roy was the man to see. We started talking and I found out he was teaching the Mercury Outboard school there. I asked him how I should go about getting into the school. I was eighteen at the time and had been racing Mercury equipment for a couple years. He said "I know who you are, and the only way you will get in my school is to be an instructor." I was overwhelmed by that. "He said you know way more than the best pupil I have, so how about it?." I had to decline, but sure wanted that Diploma on the wall. I felt working on the CIA boats was far more important than my wants. We remained good friends forever though. Later when I went to the Lake, Roy was there too. Then I met Bill Sirois and George Thompson. Bill and I were good friends forever also. His shops were always near mine. Forever was over way too soon.
