Just a side note for the record, Bill Sirois drove this 21' Molinari all eight hours to win Havasu in 1970. It was painted black with grey trim for the race. The paint scheme in the picture was done for the Mercury PR tour the boat went on after Havasu. Billy Don drove a 20' twin Merc Jones in the 1970 Havasu event. Pruett drove the boat pictured at Havasu in 1971, but had a completely different result with it than Sirios did in 70..... he blew it over!
Sorry that I can't do big pictures with this computer ..... :(

I know some of the guys who made/ make cutaways at Merc Exhibits - you would not believe the time and expense that goes into something like this - this ones is easy compared to cutting a Verado in half today! Note they are cut about a half inch off centerline so the internals don't fall out. Making them motorized was even worse, they would hide a drive motor in the starter housing - but people would stick their fingers in by a piston so something so very few motorized cutaways were ever made - a twin cyl. 644 snomo engine was made motorized but had a plexiglass cover to keep fingers out!

I know some of the guys who made/ make cutaways at Merc Exhibits - you would not believe the time and expense that goes into something like this - this ones is easy compared to cutting a Verado in half today! Note they are cut about a half inch off centerline so the internals don't fall out. Making them motorized was even worse, they would hide a drive motor in the starter housing - but people would stick their fingers in by a piston so something so very few motorized cutaways were ever made - a twin cyl. 644 snomo engine was made motorized but had a plexiglass cover to keep fingers out!
Friend mine (Bob Maxant) bought Illinois Harley Davidson dealership in 67. Long history, bought out 2011. Had a Shovelhead cutaway in the showroom and electric runner slow speed of course. Cool to watch, and yep, under plexiglass.

Those are the 4 Butler buildings in the background at plant 6 Oshkosh. All the racing car work was done in those. A retirement home complex now occupies the entire area.

I had one of those. Jenkins 2.0 litre Merc was a carb model not the hot injected type as used before the 2.4 OZ series started. These two pictures have a connection strangely enough and that is Jenkins bought that same no 7 seebold boat in 1979 and had it painted in the yellow Gordons Gin livery and used it as his club boat.But moved up to the 2.4 OZ class in 79 he even race a T4 Seebold outfit in one race in the UK.

Maybe I will get around to posting some of his original forages into the industry of which he became the master--------one day?

This one is very interesting to me. I was involved in making a lot of the tags and stands for display engines and components that were on display in Racing and Hi-Performance back in the 70's. This being one of them. The twin strut unit is very unique so got a lot of attention. I just wonder how the stand with the tag got out of Plant 6 other than being stolen.

I don't want to hi jack the great thread, but your first comment cracked me up! SO TRUE! Did 21 years at Reynolds Aluminum which was a huge (77 sq acres building alone) took pig to the furnaces, to ingots and then mills to sheet and plate. Made sheet, coils, wingskins for Boeing, made the space shuttle external tank, siding , can stock, etc. First decade Journeyman Machinist, then took over the mechanical (Mach, truck, welders, pipe fitters) shops tool crib. Worked the day shift (24/7 plant) and the stuff "borrowed" overnite (as day) was insane. We did have to go out through the guard shack, but if we were "weighed in and out? ALL would have been fired! But on the big stuff? Damn, half the drag bike I built came outta there!
"Government work" ya know, secret. So ya get a "care package" ready and then give it to the truck shop. Then ya leave and go to your ride and come back and say guards, "I need a jump start ride, dead battery" Call the truck shop and the truck showed up, and "care package" delivered!
And when the shift bosses would come and see me needing me to order something (and I could order anything), Steve came to me one day and said " I need 4 4 foot lengths SS threaded rod, 3/8" Then said "Order 10, as the store room will steal 2, 2 missing here ya not looking and you will take one too" HA! (I did)
But as it was a GREAT job, as GREAT PEOPLE, one big happy family and STILL paying me a pension 23 years later as the plant was going to slim down in 1994, and sell the rest after pensioning out those with time and service. Like me at 44 age. Alcoa bought out Reynolds, or be zero pension me. Plant was leveled few years later and what left sold dime on a dollar.
Now its a new big "office park", with all needed seems the now "society", like fast food joints, R/E and Lawyers office, health clubs, "Aroma therapy" (aint the 2S oil burnt?) all the crap that CREATES NOTHING. But the "smell of a running 2 STROKE OUT BOARD"? " Thats "therapy", and with a THROTTLE!:thumbsup:
Bernie like to meet ya some day and BS "the way it was", as its real times, and gone now. But enough goofballs here to pick up the torch and "run with it". :eek:;):D:thumbsup::thumbsup: and we will sit back and watch. "Those damn kids are crazy!"..(like we weren't:leaving:
