Interesting photo...I think around 1975 and Bill is driving a Seebold-Lowry hull, yet at this time Team Mercury are still primarily using Molinaris.
The 'seed' was planted, soon Mercury would switch from Molinari to Seebold hulls and Molinari (both driver and hulls) would leave Mercury and move to OMC.

Parts is parts. Look closely, has an X cowl and a pre-Twister SSM by the rear seal lack of bosses. The prototype piece is the mid itself.

It was a T2 not an X cowl. Had flat face. Just had bunges added. I had a 1:1 & 13:16 lower.

Everything was a prototype back then.:smiletest: Hi-Perf was constantly changing. Engineering was deleting or adding improvements on a month by month basis. Rare items today were not thought of, as rare in the 70's...it was just part of progress & the constant improvement race. :thumbsup:

One of several Merc tried from about 1960 to 70 or so. Hoped it would be a component in a speed record, but it never worked. I suspect they were "upstairs" at Lake X when things were cleaned out. Early on, the motors definetly didn't have the torque to push that much prop diameter. Not real sure why it never worked later.

It sits in the reception area at Hi Perf on the hill last time I saw it. Have a feeling that when Brunswick took over projects like this were trash canned. Maybe Mike Butler can fill us in.

I think it was late 1968, I happened to go down to Lake X when they were messin' with that project. I watched them crash a model of the boat, that really disappointed the troops.

Was standing on the beach at St. Louis one year and noticed Elmer Croissant not to far away, I knew him quite well as we made all the gears over at Plant 4. He looked like an expectant father, I walked over and asked him if he was OK.
His reply - and I think this was the year the T4's were running - He says to me "you know, you can make all the horsepower in the world, but it all boils down to a very brief point to point contact on the gears in the lower unit. I think I have a right to be a bit worried." Well as far as I know his gears never failed us.

That clearly explains this one with the skeg, but not the earlier ones without the skeg that appear to be under 76 cubic inch motors - which would imply 1961 or 1962

As faras I know, Elmer Nord was chosen to be pilot. As I heard the story he got moving across the Lake and the thing took off. Elmer still brags he holds the altitude record at Lake X.467302

Does anybody have info on any of the models used in the catalog photo shoots? Mercury Marine employees? Modeling Agencies? Where are they now? Names?
Parents (kids)? Grandparents? etc. I think the only reference I've ever seen on S&F to a catalog model was the fellow who represented the Black Max theme passing away?

The offshore boat in the background could further date this picture. Was this the only time they tested this "boat"?

The motors on the offshore boat have 1969 model year decals.

This boat would seem to solve the wetted area issue at the expense of maintaining some proximity to the water. I recall a few tunnel boat designs with the same problem.

By the tail is Bubby Cartwright from Merc Plant 6. Hugh Gilgenbach was involved in the propeller design but I don't recognize him.

For years---the control surface on the Switzer WING has been called so many names-even by the Brothers----
FLAP? AILERON? STABILIZER? FLAPERON?
I have always called the CONTROL surface an ELEVATOR---- controllable from the cockpit--
I'm sure MIKE BUTLER would agree this looks like the tail of a V Bonanza--
Angle of attack controlled from the cockpit--trim tabs adjusted on the ground--
The driver becomes an AVIATOR----

The clowns in the Flivvers are more than likely Cypress Gardens. The Hydrodynes could be there also, they used them in the ski shows back when. The Space Needle looks like '64(?) Seattle Worlds Fair. Not a clue where Tommy was performing at.

Back in the mid 60s I was about 8or9 and I thought the coolest job in the world was a driver for the show. They came down wearing the shiny black satin Mercury jackets climbing into the hydrodynes with TWIN in lines! Even today...... it’s still pretty cool.

1976 850.. I was 4 years old when my father bought one on a 17 foot saf t mate tri hull. I've been working on it for the past couple months for something cool. I learned to fish..slalom ski and proberly got laid the first time with that rig.
76 was the best cowl decals merc ever had.

Shortly after I started at Merc in April '65, for training I was sent with one of our lab techs to the Bartlett show to rig up some M500's on the jump boats. Supposedly the motors were already on the boats and all we had to do was throttle/shift/and water test. Got there and there are 4 motors in boxes sitting on the beach! Found out they needed two for that night's show, and the Hydrodyne tow boat was acting up so we worked on that first. I got to test drive it - dual 1000's and low pitch props, that thing would leap! Then we hung the 500's and when one was finished I took it out for break-in. Several of the Bartlett drivers said go over the ramp! I lined up but chickened out, thinking if I screw this up they don't have two boats for tonight's opening show. To this day I wish I had gone over that ramp! By the way, those 500's had steel swivel brackets - our foundry cast them and we had machined them - no way they were ever going to fail.

What many do not realize is that for this type of picture, in order to get both the skier and the boat (with the blonde !) in the frame the ski rope is probably about 10 to 15 feet long at the most.
