The photos of high speed boats 4 and 5 feet out of the water are some of the best marine shots I have ever seen.
I am one of the older guys and have witnessed rope started 5 HP outboards being used at remote back water fish camps to todays 300+ HP engines. It is like going from horse and buggy to the space shuttle.
I never really cared for Carl, but without his strong personality and drive, none of this would have been done.
Yes. there would be outboards, but not at this level.

...In 1973, Jim Caldwell set the competition record, won UI, and won US1, in his UI Class, E & T Marine tunnel. Bill "Edwards" & Beale "Tilton" (the "E" and the "T") built quite a few tunnel class race boats in Lexington Park, Maryland...from 1970 thru 1975, approximately. Bill still resides in St. Mary's County, Maryland...and Beale retired to Coconut Creek, Fl. years back. UI Class was an unlimited single engine class(as long as it was available from the factory as an unlimited engine) of 80 to 89.99 cubic inch displacement, with no weight restrictions, and of any hull design...of which, most were in the 14' range.
