This engine had a lot of problems with its piston mass and its inability to shed thermal waste heat (Exhaust stroke). It's the main reason why OMC decided to go with 8 smaller slugs going up and down versus 6 when it came to displacement any larger than 3 litre. Merc's 3.4L V6 and OMC V8 ultimately met the same demise. Boat owners would rather spend their money on big outdrives than monster outboards (1980's and 1990's).
Here we are in 2018 and V8 behemoths are commonplace (Yamaha and Merc 4 strokes).
They were fine motors when used as intended. I still service a pair on a fishing boat that the hour meter would have probably spun around on twice.

Called several "Mercury" dealers in my area and they were so out of touch about these that they had to look up the MSRPs on their computers just to "quote" a price? One clown even tried to shove another brand in my direction. I got the impression that these dealers would wake up and smell the boat show coffee about January with these new V8's. Merc's current production runs are "pre-sold" and spoken for and it will take over 4 months to get any V8 model in a box. Well done Merc! "F" on the report card for my local dealership network!

I think Hering's Molinari is a 17 foot sprint, one of the early Molinaris where they were going from rocker bottoms to a shallower tunnel with less lift. John, I hope you always "stick your nose in" after all you were a competitor in the best era of racing - you have first hand experience/knowledge !!
John, did you race in Toronto ( I think 1973 0r 74 ) in the PS100's at Cherry Beach ?
