Was not Ettinger. 309 belonged to Bill Rowell. I used it after I destroyed 125 at Lake X testing. (I know you remember). That was Mary with Congrats after the Closed Course record in Ufalla. (U Class).. C

That picture is almost certainly Chick Gagen in the boat. The owner was Bill Rowell who also drove the boat. I recall it as being run as a UI boat and doing pretty well especially with Chick in the seat.

Hi Chick ..... Thanks for clearing up that little mystery. The guys were talking about a gal taking pictures at boat races and Mary was the only person that came to mind. However, since I knew you were running #125 and the pic shows this woman putting a liplock on the driver in #309, I said to myself "that can't be Mary!" :D

Of course I remember the Lake X flip, just didn't put that together with the timing of this picture.

I remember a little. Maybe being older helps something. Stock Island was our favorite race place too. Bob Reid was the nicest guy in the Keys. I don't know if he put on the races you guys were at or not. We raced there until 1964. I ran my first race there too, in an Aristo Craft Torpedo 13 around 1958. Bob Waldo, Dade Marine, put a Mark 30 on it but it was jacked up too high and overheated. Next time I raced there I put a stock lower unit on my M20H Holt Craft BU, ran the 30hp class and got a trophy. I also met Tom Sheldon there and found out our mothers were friends from Fla State College for Women. I have many memories from that place, all good too.

378394 My only picture from Key West. That boat loved that course. Won the class every time we ran it there. On the way to 1 hour record in this shot. Early in the race here but it aired out once I burned off the front fuel tank.

Let her eat!!!!!!!!! Great picture Jim.

This was one of my best days there, but a couple years before this I won The Rosalind Grooms marathon overall.

John McCall really got it right with my boat. That boat was built in the fall of 1968. The picture I posted was from 1974 and this boat was still winning races through 1975. Not many race boats remained competitive for such a long time.

Racing at Key West Outboard Club was one of the great pleasures of my racing career. The first few times it was the 60 mile handicap format and then the one hour races. At the beginning it was all flat bottom Raveaus and twin engine catamarans. At the end it was v-bottoms and tunnel boats and a lot faster.

Does this motor have an exhaust tuner in it? The old 44in Mercurys before the tuners were added were rated at 45 hp powerhead. My dad and I added a tuner to an older 44in motor and it did make a measurable difference. When I was just starting out in OPC racing one of the E class top runners was Herb Reeves. Herb put together a rig consisting of two 44in powerheads on D stock mids with Quicksilver lower units on a 13' Raveau. This motor reminds me of that rig. It was something to see running.

Is boat #34 a Molinari running "topless" (no cowl) as a kneeler / laydown with a TII on the back? How did the guy work power trim if he was laying down (foot buttons?). Must have been a lot of work to "set" the boat in the turns. Kneeling or laydown vs seated position, where did the fuel tank end up going? I've never seen a TII "kneeler" before, how did it do?

They weren't intended to be. One was a Stock Division motor, the other was an OPC Division motor. In the Mod Division where both were allowed, the taller, lower displacement OMC 45ss was at a distinct disadvantage. They were tried for a few years, but it was soon obvious the Merc's had the advantage.

The 44s were reclassified into D class in both OPC and Stock Outboard. In OPC they became just about the only SD motor but with a standard mid and lower unit. I raced this class for two years in the mid 1970s. I have never even seen one of these 44XS motors in person.

Wrong Sam. The SST 45 is a 44.9 c.i. Motor & 2 cylinders lower c.g. Then the Merc 44 c.i. 4 cylinder. Yes it was tried & should have exceeded with continued effort. Remember it's loop scavenged whereas the 44 Merc is cross flow. I doubt if any version of a modified 44 Merc could reach 70 hp, but pretty sure a stock 45 pulls 60 plus then if decent expansion chambers were developed could possibly get 70 how

The 44 in Mercury just couldn't flow enough air to make a lot more than 50 hp. I heard rumors of a rotary valve conversion to an inline Mercury which might have helped but the inspectors would probably have noticed that one.

The OMC twin powerhead is shorter, but the mid is taller.

People tried them in Mod and the lower powered Merc with more mid range consistently won. Its not who's fastest, its who's "firstest"

One motor builder did build a OMC twin with expansion chamber and it did very well in the few races he took it to.

I agree, I do not think a modified 44 Merc has the potential to make 70hp.
The mid is taller but did the rules restrict the use of the standard tower? Yes I know about Anthony's project & Farmer's boat. I just wasn't convinced that picking up the exhaust in the open exhaust housing was doing much tuning.
and btw we struggled with the mid range with the 45 but were able to overcome that issue by fattening up the mid range jets and going a bit leaner on the high speed jets

That's what I used for my prototypes - all MerCruiser stuff. Used the Merc 3.4 hollow lower transom bolts to run fluid thru the transom from reservoir to gearcase. A must for big OB's but what did I know, I was just a field guy that was in the Florida big boat builders every day!

Bernard...You probably utilized the lower mounting bolts/hydraulic fittings, that came standard on the first generation(1976-79) Mercury V-6 O/B, in Figure 1, Item 15A, above. They were still available in the early eighties. Maybe you came up with the idea in the field as an answer to the first generation 3.4 gearcase water intrusion issue, that was found to be caused by a water pump base design, that leaked? Mercury updated the 3.4 water pump design two or three times in the first years of the consumer 3.4's.

Could have been - I was on the 3.4 task force to get that big bitch runnning right - dual bearing pinions, the Cosworth block , better bearings, you name it - in the end it was a pretty good motor, my estimation. Needed EFI, intregal trim, and bucket cowls, and some marketing - but the 3.0 was already being designed and that ended the 3.4.
