SG Class. A terrific class with bullet proof motors.

What a dream class to race in! Merc 80 hp short shafts correct? Did they use Sport E sized hulls? Wasn't there a Merc 850XS? My Merc 80 ran all day at WOT with a stupid high schooler (me) at the wheel. I don't think SG ran in the Seattle WA area because SE (OMC) was the dominant class. Did SG simply die out at some point? I started racing in SJ but if I had known about SG I would have put an 850XS on an SE hull instead. Did the 1500XS and 850XS share the same mid section and gearcase? I would think the 850XS would have used a different gear ratio?

In 1976 I ran a G Production boat for a limited schedule. This was not my boat and in 1977 I was struggling with what class of boat I wanted to run going foreword. It came down to either SG or SE. Ultimately it wound up being neither since I just couldn't justify the expense. Eventually I started a whole new racing career as of all things a road bicycle racer. I pursued bicycle racing on into my 50s. I did ok racing bicycles in spite of being kind of the wrong body type. Funny thing is I wound up getting hurt on bicycles much worse than I ever did in race boats.

850XS was 2.3 ratio - would swing a lot of prop.

The later model 500s could also. I repurposed a couple of props from my not very competitive EP boat to a very competitive SD boat,

I remember a JP racer who confessed at the end of the 1984 season to running a 2.3 case on his 150XS, said it pulled out of the corner better and no one ever bothered to check it.

475145 Spencer ran this boat in 1974 & 1975. From my memory he was virtually unbeatable and I think won both the Canadian Nationals and the Canadian High-Point Championships in 1974. Can't remember much about 1975 as I was busy with university.

Didn't anyone notice the motor revving much higher than everybody else. Were props available to deal with that gear ratio on that motor?

...when G.G. was given Aronow Powerboats to run, by the new middle-eastern owners, he was given an open checkbook to operate it & promote it & tool up the many new larger offshore Aronow boats he came up with. even though he/they built no "smaller" boats, like the one pictured above...that was where his background & heart was, so he
"also" sponsored many other types of raceboat classes, kilo boats, products, etc., for promotion of Aronow Powerboats...

I only remember enough of this to be considered dangerous. I think I recall Gary telling me that a few weeks after Aronow's death, he drove to the plant to see what was going on. He suspected that the plant would be in a state of confusion. No one was directing traffic, so Gary just 'took over'. Don't recall how long that went on, but suddenly the "owners" showed up and Gary was shown the door ..... he didn't argue!

...the timing on that seems a bit off, but my memories timing could be off too. it was 34 years ago, give or take. if indeed gary did do that, he had no idea what he was walking into. i would be surprised if he would be allowed on that street, for even an hour. you had to be there to understand.

Brooke Russell bought that boat and converted it to a v-bottom single engine offshore boat. Don't know how many times he raced it like that or how he did with it? I recall seeing the " Wet Noodle" rigged as shown at the shop but I don't think I ever saw it run.

Just an opinion. but that CMC bracket looks so totally out of place on a vintage setup. The motor could have had power trim, that was available then. Just sayin. And a 2 blade bronze elephant ear to complete the package.

...kinda "half" to agree with bernie on the setback bracket. looks like a 2 blade stainless BP prop thats in the photo. they were numerously available all over the place in the seventies. they actually ran pretty good on the regular inline powered boats of the day. only issue they had, was they would stretch out your gearcase just enough for the spanner ring to loose its bite, and all yours guts would come out when you let off on the throttle after a wide-open run. the 3-blade BP propellers were good runners on the right boat too, and did'nt have the balance issue.

He built it for go as much as show. Just decided to put it in the wooden boat show last year. He did everything to get max speed out the 1000 (thought a 850 FGS, my bad). I even gave him a 2 blade to try too. Doc Frankemerc built the motors too. Just boys messing with toys!

A vid from before...
"Two acceleration runs from 45mph to 60mph, with a short tour of Lake Crescent in between. Pause at 47 seconds and see the speedo pegged at 60! Speedo is top large gauge, tach is lower large gauge. 1964 White Mercury 1000 (100HP). 24" small eared chopper at 5450rpm. Mahogany runabout, home made, 15' long.

Its in Olympic Nat park, PNW.
Lake Crescent is a deep lake (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake) located entirely within Olympic National Park (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_National_Park) in Clallam County, Washington (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clallam_County,_Washington), United States (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_of_America), approximately 17 miles (27 km) west of Port Angeles, Washington (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Angeles,_Washington) on U.S. Route 101 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_101_in_Washington) and nearby to the small community of Piedmont (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piedmont,_Washington). At an official maximum depth of 624 feet (190 m) it is officially the second deepest lake in Washington (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_(U.S._state)). Unofficial depth measurements of more than 1,000 feet (300 m) have been rumored in the region for years, although this figure has recently been proven false after a lake-wide bathymetric survey was performed from 2013 to 2014 by Eian Ray and Jeff Enge. The results of this survey showed the maximum depth as being 596 feet. Using GIS statistical analysis, this survey also showed the lake contains approximately 0.5 cubic miles of fresh water.
Lake Crescent is known for its brilliant blue waters and exceptional clarity, caused by a lack of nitrogen (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrogen) in the water which inhibits the growth of algae

...and do you recall the size?

The performance was a disappointment---~~~~~21 feet

FIFTY SEVEN years ago!!!

Oliver was the best prop guy around--but prop selection was a problem--and two RH ELEPHANT ears on a flat bottom created the usual problems

I'm sure they entered the 9 Hour--DNF

Six days earlier at the 6 Hour---BOB HEWES BOATS--turned in a better performance--

Robert Lanham won the single engine class with a cut-down 16' ALIM and a 1000 (took home a brand new 1000)

Stan Irwin and I finished second in the E-class--13' Allison---(Herbie took home the brand new 500)

The water there is bitch'n cold (Ive never seen anybody ski on that lake?) It has a list of people who have disappeared on the lake and never recovered. With a depth of 900+ feet, cold water and low nitrogen I'm sure they are well preserved at the bottom. You should NEVER be on this lake without a good PFD!

This is the all time best shot of a Switzer wing. Do we know who is driving? Dave Craig?

Not sure, but if Dave drove any wing didn't it say "Miss Skyway"?

That Wing is my personal favorite. I was maybe 12, we had a 23' V King with a couple different Mercruisers. Started with a white 140 hp. Kept blowing up lu's skiing. Repowered with a black 165 hp. Dave did all our service. While my dad was inside & that Wing was there, I would go out climb in & play race boat!! That's why it's my favorite. Kinda like Brooke & Ronnie's ny record boat & the aluminum & magnesium purple d/e boat :p 5-6 years later I worked for Dave for a short time.

Co-drove the record boat in the 66 9 hour. My right leg kept going numb cause my ass was way wider than either of the Russells. Never saw the D/E boat run. Ronnie said they had a lot of problems with the bottom on that one. I recall it sitting in the back yard with a wood bottom in it

Looks like Phil Young. Don't recall Phil racing that boat but I think his wife Rosemary did. I think that Jim and Helen Campbell took it over and ran it in H class for a while.
