An old friend and mentor of mine did several conversions and installations of 44in Mercury motors into cars. They ran quite well as I recall.

How was oil bleed handled when the engine is on its side? Al Copeland had (4) 2.4L on their side with the PopEyes offshore boat. EFI was easy (injectors)Never could figure out what they did with the bleed system? How was power transferred to the tread belt between the chain drive and the engine crank end? Why not mount the engine transversely? How was the ignition timing tied to the crank instead of belt driven under the flywheel? The choke system was easy (cable)

YES! I can't imagine the time it took to rig this set up. I would have loved to be involved in this project. Does this boat still exist today? I'm thinking a lot of this stuff disappeared when Al died and the business was sold.

The boat caught fire on a SAW record attempt, most likely the result of a loose or broken fuel line/tube as one of the powerheads was replaced just before it happened. The boat was not destroyed but I think it was charred pretty bad and that was the end of it.

Rafael Nadal is joining the world’s first all-electric boat racing league (powered by Mercury Marine). The 22-time Grand Slam Winner has just purchased a team in the UIM E1 World Championship, but he’s yet to name it.

His is the third team announced so far, with ten to 12 teams in the series, each with two boats and two pilots. The season is set to start later this year and the races will be held over the course of two days.

RaceBird boats, were designed by Norwegian designer Sophi Horne and Italian naval architect Bruno Acampora. The boats use innovative hydrofoil technology, have a small one-pilot cockpit, and are put in motion by electric motors from Mercury Marine. They will reach top speeds of 50 knots (58 mph (93 kph), although their battery time only lasts for about 15 to 20 minutes.

My guess is Mercury's Outboard division had the exhaust pipes before the Snowmobile division.

i suppose chris. i also worked with him on a couple projects. one project, we broke a fuel fill pipe and had to weld it back. i had been repairing props with ox/ctl for 15 years and wanted to learn tig. chris, who i had known for years, says , no problem and handed me the tig. i finished the job with his oversite. when i went back to hagood's, we had a tig machine in less than a week. my job became ssooooo much easier. i am so thankful to chris for teaching me how to use a tig set up.

I went to High School with Ronny. He is the one who got me into OPC racing in 1964. When Ronny went into the Navy I acted as crew for Brooke for a couple of years. I drove and then served as "riding mechanic" on this boat in the 1966 Orange Bowl 9 Hour race. I was in my first driving stint in this race when Hank Bowman was killed and the race halted. The riding mechanic part is a whole different story.

I remember watching and helping him as a young lad run kneel downs tower of power drags at Marine Stadium in Long Beach. He told me after he competed and completed the drags, they would have enduro races against all classes where he usually finished and made some money back.

In 2013 I found a Baker tunnel rotting away. I ended up with his race boat (the one above) that he and Jerry Baker worked on and raced one time at the 86 Parker Enduro before he crashed it. Weird how things work out.

I went to High School with Ronny. He is the one who got me into OPC racing in 1964. When Ronny went into the Navy I acted as crew for Brooke for a couple of years. I drove and then served as "riding mechanic" on this boat in the 1966 Orange Bowl 9 Hour race. I was in my first driving stint in this race when Hank Bowman was killed and the race halted. The riding mechanic part is a whole different story.

That was my first Gold Coast Marathon. I got to know the Bennetts who built those boats. The whole Bennett family as well as several shop employees like Roland ran in the race. I still see Richard Bennett every once in a while.

That’s absolutely a funny but true comment. But what would Miami be without Calle Ocho. I grew up as a little boy going to a Catholic school on the first wave of Cubans were brought over to Miami most of them were the money Cubans getting their kids out of Castro’s Cuba and putting them in Catholic schools in care of the diocese of Miami. The teaching orders had To bring in nuns from their Spanish countries to teach at our school and all us local boys learn Mañana pretty quickly.We should’ve had Jackie Wilson here as an ambassador!!!!

...older than '92. was involved with b-class in '92. don't think that boat would be competitive in '92. the faster b-class v-bottoms in '92 were going low to mid 90 m.p.h. you know this boat & can tell us more please...

It was primarily campaigned on the west coast with POPBRA. Boat ran right around 90 mph.

That’s me in the navigator seat, was crew chief and navigator. I raced with Rick 1991-1992. Went to Saratoga Florida with it in 1992 and raced two races there. Maybe Fourth of July weekend?

My only regret at the Florida race was not having enough time to stop at Lake X. Rick wanted to but I had to get back due to work responsibilities.

Boat was very competitive on the West Coast and did well in Florida that year. Rick was/is an excellent driver.
Top speed of boats does not equal speeds in race conditions.

In 91 they were 2.4 Bridgeport EFI’s. In 92 when 2.5’s came out, 2.5 long blocks were fitted with all the 2.4 bolt ons and still fit under the Bridgeport cowls.

Interesting myth about the 88 vintage cowlings. When they first came out as the new rage style cowls after years of the "boxes" with louvered strips. The swept duct contours were supposed to be air inlets? If they were, they never did work. Air inlet ended up being a raised faceplate over a hole on the nose. I don't recall ever seeing a cowl with functional inlets. I think the problem was how to shed water spray? Problem with water spray draining was finally solved with the "alien" cowls.
