An old video from Paris 6 Hours 1972..I think it is..The video text says 1970 but I see Evinrude V4 Super Strangler & Johnson Stinger GP in the race.
My first Paris 6 hour experience was 1973.
Here is a link to that..https://svera.se/blogg/paris-6-hours/my-first-paris-6-hours-1973-was-a-disaster/

Lars,

The 1970 video of the Paris 6 hr is actually a mix of 1970 & 1972. The yellow Molinari with the Hohnson V-4 was driven by Sanders & Posey for the win. The 42 Molinari was Renato & Wilson finishing 2nd. The high rider number 14 was Hill & myself. There were a good number of Hi riders & plain V-4's, but there were quite a few Scotti's with Super Stranglers & Stinger GT's. The Scottis n& the Super Strangler/Stinger GT's were not until 1972. It was a combination of 1970 & 1972 plus maybe some 1971, but I didn't see my boat # 16 which we lead into the 5th hour only to blow up.

Yes I see..you are correct. Its a mix of 1970 & 1972..Maybe some 1971 also.
This is for sure Jimbo's #15 ON boat in Paris 1970 from the video. (First picture). The second is from OMC, Belgium before the race.

Yes, saw that but didn't comment. Ron Hill & I were also testing in Brugge, actually there is a clip somewhere with me making "Jack LEEK" fly bys. Hated doing that there as there was always considerable Lift. Jimbo's boat was designed by Jack & built by MacDonald. He was running up near the front but nose dived & per his quote, seemed like he went straight to the bottom.

This ugly green Cougar was a big time Pickle fork in Paris 1970..but he crashed out pretty bad. Not a good design.

Rotary John,

I watched the video a few times and pretty sure this #34 boat with a Super Strangler V4 is a pickle fork. Then I checked the Entry list for Paris 1972 and boat 34 is Scotti.
This is from 1972 because 1973 Scotti raced a Super Strangler V6 in Paris.

Interesting (to me). Looking at Lake X Kid`s 1972 Paris line up for class ON, I count 19 OMC`s and 10 Mercs. Seems to me like many independents ran OMC`s, maybe because the Super Stranglers & Johnson GP`s had already been available for awhile vs. the Merc C6-Twister II that was just being introduced (?).

The Golden Years - World’s Largest Manufacturer of Outboard Motors.

Many old timers will tell you that the 1960’s were Johnson’s best years. (I would personally add the 1970’s as well.) Johnson continued to lead Evinrude in sales with unit volume per year hovering around the 90,000 mark in the early 1960’s and more than doubling as the years progressed. All bolstered by the growing international markets and commercial motor sales.
Remarkable Growth – Johnson had started the 60’s decade becoming the first outboard brand to hit 2-million in production then pushed that record number to 4-million by 1973. Notably, that remarkable unit growth was accomplished with a very limited model lineup – just 7 models in 1960, growing to 13 models by 1973. Top horsepower increased from 75hp to 135hp.
World’s Largest Producer - While it took 31 years for Johnson to reach the one-million motor mark (1922 to 1953), and leading the industry at that point, it only took 20 years (1953 – 1973) to quadruple that sales number – an indication of just how fast, and large, the outboard market had grown during those years. As it did in 1953 when it hit one-million in sales, Johnson could would continue to hold the title of: World’s Largest Manufacturers of Outboard Motors.
**OMC Was Prospering Overall As Well **– 1966 proved to be a banner year with consolidated net sales of $212.4 million, breaking the $200 million mark for the first time. Sales of outboards, boats, stern drives, Lawn-Boy mowers, Cushman vehicles and snowmobiles all achieved record levels. Some 20 percent of sales were in product lines that did not exist at OMC before the 1960’s decade started.

Aaah ........the memories of the 60s. I learned to ski behind a Johnson V75. The Golden Meteor 90 was huge (when you are 9 years old). The area where I grew up had a large population of Evinrude fishing motors (15hp or less) but the Johnsons were always the big motors in my local market. Lots of V60 and V75s around. Only the elite could afford the Golden Meteor. Kind of ironic that the 3 cylinder Triumph would end up making 75hp too.

Were all of OMCs racing engines (Strangler,Stinger,V6, etc) run with 20 inch mid sections? One thing I have noticed in all of the OMC racing threads is that OMC participated using a modest profile (no graphics) on the hulls, not like Mercury did (no "team" stuff). Only time OMC actually touted their racing was in their annual sales catalogs.

Well you are way off in the time frame..Scotti dead 1974..Hering left Mercury late 1976.
The last new Scotti-Craft was the one he crashed in Paris 1974..
I have picture of Scotti's crash and you can clearly see Scotti on the concrete wall in Paris.

More unique and interesting stuff from Paris 6 hours 1976..
Mercury's top driver Bob Hering left Merc for OMC just before the race.
Bob Hering teamed up with Tom Posey and drove the #88 ON Class Johnson RS V6 2 liter/ Molinari in the famous race.
Well..a hole in the boat ended the race early.

The reports that I read is that, Marcus Ericsson holds former F1 racer Ronnie Peterson in high esteem.
Marcus has done in the past tribute helmets to Ronnie.

Snaking (weaving back and forth) over 220 mph to win, is what makes oval racing at Indy entertaining.

A safe & competitive race - well done lads.

When I see the distant between the side of the rod not touching the piston (the gap length/distance where we see the bearings & pin) to the side of the piston, I have to think this much play/clearance has to do with compensating for engine vibrations & heat expansion.

Or do you need a minimum amount of, rods sliding (back & forth) on the pins to be able to assembly & rebuild the engines.

I just noticed this (and I was there at the Paris 6 Hour in 1973) in the photo.

This deck-side air tunnel on Scotti's boat. The reason for it probably only the late Scotti knows.

Well..I think Scotti was the only tunnel boat builder in Europe with way different built boats.
Check this one out closely..
This one was getting ready for Paris 1973.

Thanks for paying attention..Thats what I meant with look close..He added like a wing when the paint was done.
Scotti did a lot of testing with small rear wings.

This is the 1951 edition/model year.

1951 was the first "modern" 25hp, had full shifting and remote tank. That basic design evolved over the years to the 30, 35, and 40 which stayed in the line up through 1976

The 40 HP had a second order reverse whirl resonance that caused the flywheel to gyrate by 1/2". If you ever watched one with a strobe, it would scare the hell out of you. As much as it moved, we could run the engine a peak resonance for hours on end and never fail the crank. Another useless peace of info about OMC. We called them the Flying 40 internally.

I'm pretty much convinced that there are no OPC hull builders left in North America. Hoffman and Pugh? Maybe. The APBA red tape to become a certified capsule builder became the death warrant for OPC hull builders in their garages and shops.

Styling Directed The Evinrude & Johnson Branding

Various critics of OMC have suggested that having two brands based on the exact same outboards (except for styling) must have been a costly headache - and an impediment to success. Actually, it was a major marketplace advantage and well worth the effort. What’s surprising, however, is that OMC corporate made little or no effort to manage, or direct, Evinrude’s and Johnson’s brand positioning at the division level – except for styling. Each brand’s marketing department was left to execute their marketing as they saw fit. Ads, catalogs, POP, etc. were seldom, if ever, reviewed by OMC corporate management, except for legal compliance (trademarks, etc.).

Two Brands / Twice the Volume

Through most of the 1940’s into the 1990’s, the two brands sold nearly the same yearly volume – with Johnson usually ahead. Having multiple OMC dealers in most communities – without too much dealer complaint – was key to doubling sales volume. Through most of those years, the two brands produced a combined 50% + overall market share. The two brand strategy obviously worked quite well.

OMC’s Sexier Brand

The obvious difference in the two brands was their color and styling. Evinrude’s styling, which was executed by renowned industrial designer Brooks Stevens from the 1940’s forward was clearly more stylish, generally with more appliques. Evinrude marketing took that cue from the beginning and positioned their outboards as sexier and more upscale - with a suggestion of higher performance - under the slogan ‘First in Outboards’. Johnson followed a more conservative path with less flashy styling and carved out a “dependable workhorse” image under the slogan ‘First in Dependability’.

Brand Loyalty Reigned

Notably, Evinrude and Johnson owners were typically devoted fans and brand loyal, not wanting to admit these two outboards were virtually the same. Or, that they were – heaven forbid – built on the same assembly lines. It wasn’t unusual for an Evinrude owner to insist that he would “never evero wn a Johnson” – and visa versa.

Internal Competition
If you asked Johnson sales who their main competition was, the answer was Evinrude - and Evinrude sales would say Johnson. For most of OMC’s early history little attention was paid to Mercury. There wasn’t much respect or concern – at least from sales and marketing.

#30 is Ulf Backman fishing from his UIM ON class race boat..!!

He purchased the Molinari brand new 1969. Evinrude/Linco Sweden supplied him with the UIM ON class Evinrude SS V4 race engine.
Ulf was a good driver..(commecial airline pilot for SAS)
The problem started when Ulf did not get the power-trim and updated stuff for his SS V4 in time for the races.
He contacted a Swedish boating magazine and told them he was using his race boat for fishing instead..
The #30 boat ended up at the front page of the Swedish boating magazine..:)

Sounds to me like OMC Corporate was just a business unit (Boeing term). Business units tend to focus on sharp pencils and shareholder value, which is why Boeing is in the mess they are in today. Programs (Boeing term) like Evinrude and Johnson units had a certain degree of autonomous operation unless the money situation got really sideways. Maybe there was a point in history where one brand should have been chosen? I think that policy (Evinrude) was kind of implied with the BRP acquisition. At that point, it was too late?

Does anybody know who the female model was on the cover of the 1969 Evinrude sales brochure? At the ripe old age of 14 I had a hopeless crush on her. Who was she? Hometown? She would probably be a grandmother today? It would be 45 years later I would see a girl in a drive thru coffee stand who closely resembled her. https://www.screamandfly.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=505632&d=1654450535

Ralph Evinrude Test Center Gets A New Life

What was previously the Ralph Evinrude Test Center in Stuart, Florida will be the $80 million Atlantic Point Yacht Club & Marina. When complete in August of 2023, Atlantic Point will offer boaters multiple services on this 7.9-acre property. The marina will include 105 boat slips capable of handling vessels up to 160 ft and three buildings including: a 109,000 square-foot dry rack storage facility with a capacity of 456 boats up to 50 feet; a 6,510 sq. ft. single-story restaurant and bar; a two-story shipstore building containing the dockmaster’s office, a fitness center and a VIP lounge, all with expansive views of the Intrercoastal Waterway and downtown Stuart. (The property was purchased from BRP in 2020.)
Note that the artist’s rendering of the shipstore shows that the Ralph Evinrude memorial monument will be retained. The restaurant will ‘*reportedly’ *have a Test Center theme with photos, memorabilia, videos of the test boat drivers.
The OMC Test Center opened in 1966 as the saltwater testing location for Evinrude, Johnson and OMC Stern Drive products. Following Ralph Evinrude’s death the test center was renamed in his honor.

Photos: Upper left -1988 Johnson 2-page ad featuring endurance testing at Stuart. (Durability and dependability were at the heart of Johnson’s brand position.) Upper right – property currently under construction. Lower – artist’s renderings of new buildings.

My racing memories from Bristol-Embassy GP

First time was 1977. My brand new black #40 UIM OE/F3 class Molinari/VP-Konig was extremely fast but lots of technical issues in my first race with Konig power.
Dieter Konig was a fun great man to work with.
First is Entry list Bristol 1977.

We all know about the first and only Evinrude-Johnson F1-V8 3.5 Liter 2 stroke looper engine from OMC. This powerful, (still fastest in the world) race engine was used all over the world from early 1981 to late 1989.
What we don't know are all the drivers around the world who had the honor to race this beauty.
I am starting with the first five in Brodenbach, Germany in June 1981. (First ever F1-V8 race)
Please enter names as a comment and I will move the names up here later.
(Please..only drivers in a race..not private testing)
Roger Jenkins, Renato Molinari, Tom Percival, Bob Spalding, Cees Van Der Velden. (First five)

Jimbo McConnell, Barry Woods, Mark Rotharmel, Bob Hering, Mark Croslyn, Gene Thibodaux, Art Kennedy, John Nichols, Ben Robertson, François Salabert, Rick Frost, Gerard Barthélemy, Kicco Vidoli, Randy Pierson, Pete Nydahl, Lillo Colombo, Luigi Valdano, Francois Salabert, Jarno Hakkinen, Arthur Mostert, Lars Strom, Bertil Wik, Michael Werner, Saverio Roberto, Nicola Mora, Guido Caimi, Johnnie Sanders, Fabrizio Bocca, Tom Posey, Andy Bullen, Bill Marshall, Rob Woods, Allan Nimmo, Stefano Signoretti, Luigi Baggioli, Tom Henderson, Larry Everett, Duanne Wight, Ken Stevenson, Bob Wartinger..

Where did Kelley get the baseline lofting from? A Scotti hull? I seriously doubt this was designed from scratch.

I have no idea, but having been close friends with Hal he was very ingenious. He did have a propensity to measure boats first before drawing & lofting them . His famous Airborne came after seeing & caught measuring the first Sid-Craft Hornet while we were all in a diner after a race in Lock Haven, including the rest of the family. He was the first to do an “S” bottom with his Ben Hur design. He designed & built the first off & sold the plans & initial write up to Mechanix Illustrated, owned by Fawcett publications where a relative of his was employed.

This tunnel was nothing at all similar to a Scotti as it was tunnel was considerably deeper.

I was always impressed with builders who could take a measurement here and there and then come up with progressive frame profiles, stringer placement, etc.

Well, surprised no Stock Outboard racer from the 50's era. The Airbourne was 1954, see picture attached. The one that was based on the Sid-Craft Hornet was the Jinx. The picture that I'm attaching was taken after the 1954 season E
We went together on Hal's trailer, we did. n't have one carrying my Jacoby on the roof of my dad's Hudson. I placed 4th in BSH, age 15, Hal didn't qualify for BU.. We started 16 boats in the final. Dave Kough of Hawthorne, NJ won the first heat, I was passing him to the first turn at the start only to almost blowing over, but saved it. Finished 6th that heat & 3rd the final heat. Two weeks prior at the divisionals I won & set a 5 mile competition record. The trophies were some of Hal's & mine for our career to date, I had only be racing 2 years. Notice the trailer with "Paint a player" ad. That was part of Fawcett publications.

I'm late to the game finding this FaceBook page, love ALL the memories. I'll add this pic of my Dad since it's Father's Day. He's known as a Merc man I'd say, but his last full seasons racing were in this Broughton/OMC rig. I believe this was taken at the Jacksonville Outboard Club course, '79? Great Page, looking forward to adding some more pics down the road.

Vandervelden was a character. Met him at a couple of races over here when he was hanging around with Gary Peacock. He always had a pouch full of diamonds with him. Claims he just ran a little radio store in Amsterdam. Don’t believe it for a minute. But that was a long time ago.

Never more than a local racer
Some of the 1988 US Formula One drivers.
Never made it in the formula . Ran my old Al Martin hullWhich was basically a 17 foot copy of the Mollinari with a T3 on it

Mostly in South Florida local races. Went to Eufaula Alabama a couple of times mostly second third and fourth. Marine Stadium in Miami was my home course used to race there regularly and could hold my own with most anybody there. Got involved after 76 with the marathon racers club running the grand national inboard boats. That was up until about 1982. Sold the boat to Ben Borden and Tom Chandler continue to drive it for him with some success. We never could beat the Duff daiily. But then neither could a lot of people. My friend Richard Berg from California and the marshals from speed marine and Callie went home a lot of times shaking their heads about the equipment that the dailies were running. They just stomped The living daylights out of everybody in the Grand national class. Had a lot of fun for five or six years with those boys. Mr. Doug Janish are used to build my engines. God bless DougWithout him we never could’ve done it.

Trimite is generously loaned to the museum from a private collection.

A catamaran is a boat with two hulls. They have been used for thousands of years by the indigenous peoples of Oceania and can often be seen today in use as car ferries.

Trimite was built in 1982 for speed and, only a year later, Rick Frost set a world record in it. He reached the incredible speed of 144.16mph (232kph), which was the fastest a boat had ever been in this class.

It is named after Trimite Paints, who were Frost’s main sponsor for several years. We are very grateful to Rick Frost for his generous loan of Trimite so that it can be admired on the museum’s Wall of Speed.

Again I’m Not readingThe MPh Correctly. I had a chance to meet in a race against A very young Benny Robertson in the Miami Marine Stadium and the nationals it was either 72 or 73 they have been 74 I can’t remember when I had my little Molinero with the blue stripe twister. I think I ran Mid back Of the front runners like him and Thorton And Reggie. That was the old U class What is now SST 100. Back down the boat speeds were probably in the high 90s. What a great time!!

The development of safety cell cockpits speaks for itself. Barry's crashes look awful but other than bruises, no major harm done. Ironically, after years of flying private jets, Barry would suffer a stroke while doing a preflight check. Another miracle is that Barry did not get airborne before his stroke. Jimbo McConnell's stuffing in Sacramento would have turned out entirely different if his boat had a safety cell cockpit? Bob Spalding (Burgess) and Velden / Mostert (Velden) were the first V8's to run at Sacramento with cells. That's what made Jimbo's accident bittersweet. I think 1985 was the last time F1 was run without mandated safety cells.

Extremely nice Burgess/Evinrude CC F-3/OE race boat..

I found this picture with help of Jack Ottobrini and asked David Burgess to tell us the story.
Here it is the answer from the famous boat builder today..(July 17-2012)
Thanks David…

Lars,
This is the first time i have seen this. I built it for Tom Ireland of Evinrude North America, I know they ran it a few times with Tim Briggs driving it. It was a problem getting it going so i think they towed it until it was planing then it went quick.
After that it was used as a show boat, and at the Chicago boat show it was shown and put the wind up mercury because at the time OMC and Mercury was racing against each other in OE/F3.
The outfit weighed in at a mere 220 kilos.

Lars in the previous post you mention the Paris 6 Hour. A very prestigious race and venue back in the 60s & 70s.
And many other popular venues are now in Boat Racing's past and not present.

I just watched some the TV coverage of the British Open - the 150th at the Saint Andrews golf course.

And it made me think of Boat Racing's legacy and historical racing sites, and the demise of race courses. Like Bristol, Pittsburgh, Paris, Miami Marine Stadium and others. Where and what city will support Boat Racing annually for decades to come, and become a historical venue where "Past and Present Race Drivers" will go to reminiscence and support boat racing legacy?

I’m seeing and trying to analyze obviously a bobs but the center section evade my analysis or experience I should say. Experience That the smallest center section with lowest center gravity is best. The old Mercury and OMC stuff I’m back in the day is mostly 15” Remember from the early Tunnel boats. Is the gear ratio typical 185or187What is the degree of Rake on the blades. And replaced the factory Mounts with solid mounts. There’s a jack plate on there is it manual or hydraulic. Looks like a really cool professional set up

How Hot is Hot?

Launched in 1983, this Evinrude “hot”, high-performance 150XP V-6 targeted the burgeoning bass boat market and had become a pro bass angler favorite by 1987. At that introduction, the 175 and 150XP – were both 149.4 cubes, **so based on the higher horsepower potential, the advertised 150hp rating “might have been simply a suggestion.” **True or not, the Good Ol’ Bassin’ Boys bought into the extra-performance ‘suggestion’ and the elite bass boats of all brands – including Ranger – began shedding the black beginning in 1984.
Hottest Outboard in Bass Country - Based on the 90-degree, cross-charged block, the 150XP was 2448 cc (149.4 cu. in.) with a full-throttle rang of 4500–5750 RPM. Carburetion was three dual-throat carbs. Performance features included: High performance heads. Enlarged intakes & exhaust. Tuned carbs and exhaust. High-speed Nitro Series gearcase. Optional performance SST props. (The high-performance Johnson V6s were branded the GT150.)

A chilly early Friday morning boating turned out great after a few hours.
We started up driving the car to Eknäs, Ingarö and got onboard my son Richards boat. Roland was the captain and the destination was Sandhamn.
I did a google map and the red circle is the start, blue circle Sandhamn and the yellow line is the way we drove.
Many more pictures in separate posts later..This was a fun, nice boat ride to see friends and the fantastic islands.
