I have seen a number of photos of Renato sitting in his boat prior to the race start, before other drivers have got into their race boats. I think Renato was practicing visualization techniques.
Elite athletes utilize the power of guided imagery or visualization. Imagery has long been a part of elite sports and many Olympic athletes have mastered the skill with the help of Sport Psychologists and Mental Game Coaches. Guided visualization or imagery for athletes is consciously controlling the images or directing an athletic script in your head.

Hard to do the visualizations in boat racing as the track keeps changing I would of thought, perhaps lead lap from pole in a tunnel on flat water is different?
I certainly did that in slalom races in snow skiing, works for sure.

More from Idroscalo, Italy 1983.
Allan Nimmo in his #15 Castrol/Titanium Molinari/Johnson F1-V8.
Renato did race the boat 1982. Extremely expensive to build.
OMC asked him to go back to wood 1983. Allan Nimmo purchased the used titanium boat from Renato and raced it 1983.

Lars, I just remembered that the Toledo Ohio F-1 race I attended in 88/89’, we went in the local boat dealer there, at the site, and they had a F-1 boat on their floor, for sale!
I wish I remembered the price.

More UIM F1-V8 racing from Idroscalo, Italy 1983. The perfect place for boat racing.
Yes, thats me standing up in the #8 Aspen/Burgess/Evinrude V8.
Dont remember exactly why the other boat is upside down..looks like Renato Molinari but not sure.
My guess is a collision with another boat. Not me but if I remember right Rick had some damage to his beautiful black #6 Burgess.
One more thing..this was also the race when I got my first heat win in F1-V8 racing.
I am getting to that..

I think good a contender (and a scenic lake site) best picturesque race location in Italy is Auronzo Lake.
BTW Renato later won the race beating his cousin Scotti.

PB, the snow/ice surface changes a little too. When other skiers, before your runs, dig into the corners going around the pins changing the surfaces by plowing.

Well..It took me all summer to get to this point but it finally happened at Idroscalo 1983. I got my first heat victory. Back then in Europe you raced 3 heat races and all 3 counted in the F1-V8 series.
From Powerboat & Waterskiing.
Lasse Strom drove the #8 Aspen Burgess to his first Formula I heat victory.“He could barely believe it, at last his undisputed ability was there for all to
see – he had lost his anti-torque steering four laps from home – and it had looked
like it – but he made it anyway.
Jenkins held onto second slot and Percival who managed to negotiate Enrico Vidoli took
third place”.
First picture is the #8 Aspen/Burgess/Evinrude V8 first to the checkered flag..A great end to a very tough season for me.
All the rest is from Idroscalo, Italy 1983

Lars...One of the things that makes your thread so great is that you include so much history with the pictures. Including the time period, the location, driver's name and names of others that appear in the pictures, brand of hull and details of the power plant make your pictures so much more meaningful.
Glad to see you posting again...

Idroscalo 1983 and Cees Van Der Velden in his #1 Velden Racing/Johnson V8.
Cees was an interesting racing friend..you never know whats going to happen if you hang around him.
At the F1-V8 & F3/OE race in Vichy, France 1981 I could have won the World F3/OE title with enough points finish third or better in that race.
Instead of being smart I went for the win in the race.. but when I was leading the race I was getting ready to lap one of Cees F3/OE boats driven by a girl I cant remember the name of her right now.. She got scared..made a strange turn around the turning point..I could not avoid her..crashed in to her Johnson engine..the transom broke off her Velden boat..one of my pickle forks on the red AKAI/Burgess was completely gone..I did get back to the pit on my own..
Cees came running at the dock and screaming at me...That was stupid Lars..you destroyed my boat..!!
Well..Cees..I am sorry..I made a mistake..was my short answer..
Next heat was the F1-V8 race and I was watching Cees make a mistake in the first turn..he ran in to another boat..broke off his pickle fork and came limping in to the pit..
I walked up to Cees and said something like "what did you tell me 30 minutes ago Cees"..He looked at me and said..
F*ck you Lars..with a big smile..then we shook hands..:)
Thanks Paolo Moro for the picture.
We lost Cees in December of 2006.
R.I.P my friend.

My friends overseas told me today the girls name racing F3/OE for Team Velden 1981 was Marleen de Bruyne from Holland.
With my sense of humor you could use Danica Patricks quote after a Nascar race in Talladega...

I guess Marleen de Bruyne can say " I got drilled from behind"..by a Swede in Vichy, France..!!..https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/t29/1.5/16/1f602.pnghttps://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/tab/1.5/16/1f923.png

If Dancia was driving that boat you hit, then after the race in the pits she would be in your face ... asking why ... and not smiling.
Especially if there was a television camera filming the verbal exchange.

It's from Peatties Lake, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa and the 6 hour race. The race was run early 1970.
My guess is this must be one of the first Scotti-Craft Cesare Scotti built. Look close..is it Evinrude socks Cesare Scotti is using..??..:)
This Scotti-Craft sold after the race and stayed in S.A. Later used an Evinrude V4 Super Strangler instead of the Starflite SS

We only got to race in Hamilton once, August 1979. I was there running in SE class.
We were pretty lucky that day with the weather as Hamilton is at the far west end of Lake Ontario and even with mild winds it probably would have been too rough to race.
I forgot Steve DeFeo was there, but I remember Art Kennedy was there as well (you can see his red/blue Molinari in the background) and Art's boat had brakes - not sure if he used them but there were very evident on the back of each sponson.
I think Steve DeFeo designed and built his own boats.

In most UIM races the race organization told you to have a rope like that in to the drivers seat so you easy/fast can be towed away if stopped at the race course.

In my humble opinion this is one of the reasons the Molinari race boats were the race-boats to covet. Not only the aerodynamic lines of the early 1970’s race hulls, but also the detail to weight savings.
In the Como race shop, when I would visit the second floor, I admired the workmanship on the wooden boats. The simple fact, where the carpenter would lay an uncut stringer on the boat’s frame, and pencil mark every cross-section (joint) where the stringer and frame member made contact. And then he would take the stringer to the router table, and voila, shave excessive weight off the stringer.
Small details that increase performance with little extra man hours revealed to me, that Molinari race hulls are a force to be reckoned with. And walking and looking at other hull manufactures in the European race pits, I did not see the same weight savings as their competitor, Renato Molinari, instilled in his constructed race hulls.

When I was running and building my own A Stock Hydros, I built one that I “dado’d“ the backs out of the 3/4” x 3/4” spruce stringers for the same reason.
The were a PIA to staple in place w/o blowing them apart but you couldn’t tell them from a regular 3/4” stringer is nice installed.
Unless the boat was on the scales.
We also, for a few yrs, ran what we called vented transoms.
Top edge of front of motor board was full of holes which vented to the inner core/laminate which had channels cut in that vented to holes at bottom/rear of outside of motor board.
I was big into aerodynamics and fully bought into the theory
I think I’ve seen the ones above, before??
Maybe pixs from one of his boats.
Very cool post though.

No..the OMC racing headquarter was in Brygge, Belgium..That was the base for service trucks etc at the races.
Renato got his stuff normally sent directly to Italy from Waukegan..same for Cees Van Der Velden..directly to Boxtel, Holland.
Burgess & Hodges drivers was depending on OMC in Brygge, Belgium.
When Second Effort got involved mid season 1983 things got way more complicated in Europe.

To explain all this I have to start way before SE got involved in my first year in F1-V8 racing. Not sure if I am ready to tell the full story..but here is some..
Beat Jenni was the President for OMC Europe..OMC's George Lamy was in charge of European racing..sponsorship at races etc. At a meeting with George, Beat and me..(maybe also an Aspen representative) early 1983 at the OMC Headquarter in Brugge, Belgium we made following deal.
Aspen Jackets in France was the main sponsor for the Aspen UIM F3 World Series. (I was the current 1982 UIM F3 Sprint World Champ) Aspen was also a sponsor for Velden Racing. One of Team Veldens boats was sponsored by Aspen..#2 Arthur Mostert..picture below.
OMC was by far Aspen's largest customer..all the OMC PR stuff like jackets, t-shirts, hats etc sold to Evinrude/Johnson dealers was made by Aspen.
OMC promised me to make Aspen my exclusive sponsorship for the 1983 F1-V8 series . A short time later I got a great contract from the President of Aspen in Rouen, France. (He did not speak any English)
Don't remember the exact number but it was enough for a F1-V8 season.Three installment payments..one in the spring before the season, one after the first race and the last payment mid season.
I was extremely happy..signed the contract after my lawyer checked it out..
New Burgess boat on order, purchased a used F1-V8 engine from Baggioli in Italy, OMC rebuilt the power-head and the gear-case. A spare power-head and a very nice big box Volvo racing truck was also purchased by me.
Aspen Jackets sent two designers to Stockholm and hand-painted my new Burgess and race truck in the Aspen Colors..(second and third picture) Everything was ready just in time for the Stockholm Boat Show 1983.
Got lots of media at the show and sold a ton of new Evinrude outboards.
More is coming pretty sooooon...!!

This is in Paris after the 1981 Aspen F3 World series season.
I won the title and Aspen made a big deal about that. The person to the right closest to me is the Aspen President. George Lamy from OMC was also there..but not in the picture.
Nice fun weekend and I trusted Aspen and OMC.
One more note..OMC France President Ove Jansson..(yes he was a Swede) Ove spoke fluent French/Swedish and he was also at this event.

Everything was looking great in the spring of 1983..I did a lot of testing back home and the #8 Aspen/Burgess/Evinrude F1-V8 boat was extremely fast..The driver needed more seat time.
One very important thing was still missing..the money from Aspen, France.
I called them and was told.."the check is in the mail"
Received a package with Aspen decals a few days later but no check. picture.
Installed a work bench in the Volvo Racing truck and ready for the first race in Como, Italy May 14/15 1983

When my racing truck left Stockholm for the first F1-V8 race of the season there was still no check from Aspen.
I was told by OMC the Aspen people are going to be in Como for the race..
Lake Como May 14/15 - 1983 was flooded rainy and windy..the race was run under very difficult conditions.
The worst part..NO Aspen people came to the race..
OMC's George Lamy told me in Como ..take it easy Lars..they are going to pay you..!!
It was extremely hard to concentrate on racing when my sponsor was in some way not telling me the truth..
My racing truck left for the next race in Ampolla, Spain...!!!

My racing was a big part of my exclusive Evinrude dealership in Stockholm, Sweden.
Invoices from OMC racing was just like any invoice for regular outboards and parts. Just my OMC dealership number.
Even credits for advertising support and warranty. OMC Sweden sometimes gave me credit for racing reports in the media when Evinrude was in the picture.
Invoices was blue and credit red..an extremely good set up.
I also got some credit from OMC when they used me in advertising. Second picture.

My racing truck came early to Ampolla, Spain. I think it was two weeks after Como. Me and my brother Lennart took a commercial flight to Ampolla. (A very long trip by car from Sweden)
Lennart won the F3 race and that was great..for me Ampolla, Spain was a disaster..No money from Aspen and no Aspen people at the race. They did not take my phone calls anymore.
The F1-V8 race was cancelled..Way to rough water.
I slowly starting to understand there was a major conflict between OMC and Aspen..I could not get any info out of Beat Jenni or George Lamy. Both was at the race in Ampolla, Spain.
My lawyer told me as long as Aspen is in business they are going to be forced to pay you..
Well.....now my F1-V8 main sponsor was me and my dealership..The good part was my dealership was doing great.

When OMC changed the racing policy in the middle of the 1983 racing season was extremely bad news for me.. Second Effort was now the race engine, parts and service provider. All invoices must be separate from OMC and directly from Second Effort and payed to them.
On top of that I blow a power-head before the Stockholm GP..(problems with the connecting rod screws)
I knocked on the OMC President Beat Jenni's door in Brugge, Belgium very disappointed with Aspen & the new SE deal.
Playing nice was not working..
I told Beat Jenni my dealership just changed the policy..No more exclusive Evinrude..
Yamaha is going to be sold at my dealership and advertised on my F1-V8 boat at the Stockholm GP a few weeks from now.
(the fact was..Yamaha have asked me more than ones to be a Yamaha Center.)
Beat Jenni looked at me and finally agreed to continue with the same set up for me for the rest of the season. The power-head on him...No Second Effort for me as long as no Yamaha at my dealership.
The Aspen deal was still up in the air..there was a possibility for peace between the two according to Mr. Jenni..
My lawyer told me to keep Aspen on my boat. The only way the force Aspen to pay me now or later...I continued with Aspen during the rest of the season and hopefully they stayed in business and paid me..
Only option at that time...

Boy! Have I heard this before! What I learned from all of this that you don't even put graphics the size of a postage stamp on the hull until their check clears in your bank account. It's amazing what potential sponsors have in mind for ads and promos on your stuff for a small amount of money. I bought into a pitch for a series race site sponsor one time and spent 2 weeks of my own time and money with event displays, newspaper and live radio interviews not to mention their logo plastered all over my boat and support truck. Never saw a dime. Never again unless cash is in my hand! As far as 2nd Effort goes, it became apparent to OMC to separate themselves from the V8 / HiPerf unit because the liability lawsuits were already starting to stack up. Not so much as the full up race units ,but the XP products were being purchased by idiots who had no business running equipment of that caliber. Ended up killing themselves (and others) so family lawyers lined up to paint a target on OMC. If I remember right, the small print on anything from 2nd Effort had "LLC" in the title (LIMITED Liability Company). Only ones that I remember who obtained true corporate outside sponsorship were Seebold, Molinari, Velden, Percival and DeSouza. Everybody else kind of wrote their own ticket.

The Stockholm GP 1983 was a total success. Great weather, hundred thousand spectators or more. The race was run in the center of Stockholm late Saturday and Sunday. Full coverage by TV and news papers.
In the second heat I lost the rear boat cowling, Allan Nimmo was nice and in the third heat I used his boat cowling. He could not race for some problems I dont remember.
All the big wheels from OMC was in Stockholm for the race. When the race was over I asked for a meeting with Beat Jenni..(The President for OMC Europe) and my lawyer.
I think its important to know my relationship with Beat Jenni was very good. He know my history very well from years back.
Here is proof..when he was the Marketing Director for OMC Europe/OMBESA 10 years earlier.
At this meeting Beat Jenni promised to put pressure on Aspen to pay me. He also said OMC was still buying lots of stuff from Aspen.
The next two races was Minneapolis and Pittsburgh in the USA.
Beat Jenni asked me to bring my boat to Belgium and OMC was going to handle everything..Including hire someone in Waukegan to paint the new rear boat cowling from Dave Burgess in Aspen colors/text. There was no time to do this before shipping all the F1-V8 boats to the USA.

When we arrived in Waukegan my Burgess boat was fixed perfect. OMC did hire someone I dont remember the name of to hand paint ASPEN on the new rear boat cowling David Burgess helped me with.
The only way to see this was my name was painted a bit different. Red circle..the second picture is from the race in Pittsburgh.
Pretty interesting if you think about this..OMC painted ASPEN on my boat..!!...made me think OMC is going to make sure I get paid.
Second Effort was at both races and I could tell the frictions between OMC racing people and the ones from SE.
To make sure I did only ask OMC mechanics for help..
There was a problem with the screws holding the carburetor float chamber..for some reason they broke off and you got a fuel leak/engine running to lean. I guess vibrations.
OMC replaced all the screws with stronger ones and that finally fixed the problem..8 carbs and 4 screws on each is a lot of screws..:)

After the US races we were back in Europe.
Liege, Belgium was a disaster race for me in many ways..I crashed bad, nose dived WOT. Ended up at the hospital.
Stayed overnight but was OK.
Suddenly Beat Jenni was not at the race in Belgium..Dont remember exactly but never met Beat Jenni again. He was still within OMC in USA but not sure what he was doing.
No money from ASPEN..David Burgess repaired my badly damaged Burgess in time for London GP.
The last race of the 1983 season was Idroscalo, Milano.
I got my first heat victory..finally the season was over.
After Milano I drove straight to the Aspen Headquarter in Rouen, France and met with the President.
He was now a big snake and told me clearly he is not going to pay me anything. OMC & Aspen did not do any more business.
My lawyer did what he could do but Aspen filed for bankruptcy sometime later.
I did not get one cent out of Aspen..in my opinion OMC helped me get screwed..!!..no hard feelings but
when my outboard export business opened up late 1983 was in someway my way of getting even with OMC.
The picture is the last race with Aspen painted on my boat.

One more thing..
Very few people know the correct history about my first year racing the F1-V8 series..(the long story above..the economic side)
By far the most costly racing season ever for me..
Was it worth it..??
Yes..I learned a lot..dont trust anyone in the business world..even people you think are your friends.
When things go wrong..few is there for you and some of them are even gone from the company.
Did I do mistakes..Yes I did, but so far in my live I have not done the same mistakes again.

Before the 1984 F1-V8 series started George Lamy..still the marketing director for OMC Europe..(real name OMBESA...short for OMC Belgium Co) contacted me. The new plan was to have local sponsorship for each race in the series..
OMC Sweden and the CEO Bengt Nilsson paid for repainting my Burgess boat and Volvo Racing truck in white and blue colors. Bengt was feeling really bad for me getting screwed by Aspen with help from OMC.
This was the design I first did for the 1984 season. "LASSE STRÖM MARIN" was my outboard business name and by far the largest Evinrude dealer in Sweden..sometime later the largest Evinrude dealer in the world but OMC told me NOT the put that on my boat..!!

The first F1-V8 race for me 1984 was the Holland GP in DenBosch.
OMC/George Lamy told me to bring my Burgess race boat "white only" to the race a few days early. The new one race sponsor deal was going to dress it up in the company logo.
Well..I am not going anywhere before you send me the $10,000.00 sponsor money for the race..as we agreed on.
I got the $10,000.00 credit to my dealership account and used some of it to pay Second Effort for the exhaust manifold update.
Heading to the race site in Holland with the Volvo race truck.
For some unknown reason to me the sponsor backed out in the last minute.
OMC dressed up my boat in the Evinrude colors instead.
We lost Luigi Valdano in the race..a very sad weekend.
I like to add a few months earlier at the Stockholm Boat Show 1984 George Lamy and some other OMC people came and
asked me for a meeting at my dealerships large display at the show with Evinrude outboards.
OMC have traced lots of new Evinrude outboards in an outboard store in Marina Del Ray to my dealership.
Not a surprise..and I answered.. I must make back all the money I lost when ASPEN filed for bankruptcy..
The meeting ended pretty fast.

After the Holland GP 1984 we left my racing truck at OMC Belgium. Went back home to Stockholm and called OMC Sweden. Placed an order of close to thousand new mixed sizes Evinrude Outboards. No questions asked from anyone. OMC could have easy said NO..but they did not.
A few days later two very large semi trucks came straight from OMC Belgium. We unloaded at a friend of mines export/shipping company.
Next F1-V8 race was in Paris and we picked up my truck/Burgess boat at OMC Belgium.
The boat was now painted in “International Travel Card” colors and logo.
Tom Percival's #10 Hodges/Evinrude V8 was also painted the same way..with the same sponsor “International Travel Card”
I dont have a picture of my boat but it was the same way as Tom's.
https://www.screamandfly.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=487909&d=1603293040
We are now in the Paris pit and I was watching Gérard Barthélémy.. a new french F1-V8 driver and he was out testing before the race. He was flying down the race course and at the end of the course wide open he took off..a very bad flipp and we lost Gérard..
A terrible feeling watching and nothing you can do.
R.I.P my friend.
The Paris GP was run the next day but it was a very tough deal..
After Paris was Stockholm GP..I asked George Lamy at OMC for a full time sponsor instead of this one race deal sponsor..
At that time there was none available.
“International Travel Card” paid me upfront for the Paris race but was not interested in the Stockholm race.

Thanks for asking.
Many reasons for that..here is a few.. I started my Evinrude dealership 1975 with help of the Huzells..the Swedish distributor for Evinrude at that time. A good location next the one of the largest waterways to get out boating from Stockholm. Got lots of help from Huzells in form of advertising and racing support. Always a low price attitude for new outboards.. great service.
A few years later (1979/80) I purchased Melins Motor..a long time Evinrude dealer. Merge the two dealers in to one and took over Melins Motors location in Stockholm next to Riddarfjärden. That's the location for the Stockholm GP F1-V8 race.
My racing helped and the low price policy. On top of that very loyal employees.
Exclusive Evinrude sales and service and a pretty good relationship with OMC.
@Lake X Kid (https://www.screamandfly.com/member.php?u=67246)
Need to add one more thing about the Largest Evinrude dealer in Sweden..!! (Text on My F1-V8 boat).
OMC based sales in Sweden from Oct 1 to Sep. 30 the following year.
The Largest Evinrude dealer I refer to was from Oct. 1 1982 to September 30 1983.
This was before any Evinrude outboards was exported.
The export started after September 30 1983..

I am going to continue with my 1984 Stockholm GP sponsor story but first I like to make a few things extremely clear..
Yes..I started to sell new Evinrude outboards from my Stockholm dealership to a person I know who exported them to the USA. The first sale was around November/December 1983. I wrote about this in post #8561 (https://www.screamandfly.com/showthread.php?328105-Facts-about-Evinrude-Johnson-racing-outboards-made-my-OMC&p=3286077#post3286077)
I also wrote in post #8564 (https://www.screamandfly.com/showthread.php?328105-Facts-about-Evinrude-Johnson-racing-outboards-made-my-OMC&p=3286435#post3286435) OMC Belgium came to the Stockholm Boat Show in March of 1984 to talk to me about the Evinrude export.
My export was going on from late 1983 to the end of 1986.
OMC was fully aware of my export..Other OMC dealers in UK, France and Holland started doing the same thing but did not have the right set up.
This is how simple it was..my buyers contacted me..
We need more new outboards..I asked.. how many, HP and length.
Called OMC Sweden with the order and they never told me NO over the 3 years.
I can add..every year close to September 30, OMC Sweden sales contacted me and asked if I needed another truck load of outboards before they close the books for that year.
Normally it was a yes.
This business was 100% legal and I always asked my lawyer for advice if needed.
I know there is a few people here at S& F who are upset about the export.
Sorry..but that is part of business..They should be mad at OMC, not me.
Every large order I did for export was way over my credit limit..and Peter Runestam the Chief Financial Officer at OMC Sweden must approve.
He could have asked for bank security or said No.. but never did. (No dealer Floorplan set up in Sweden..OMC, Sweden was acting like your bank up the an agreed limit)
OMC could have easy cut me out as a dealer..but that was never even considered.
This is over 35 years ago..OMC is long gone and so is my outboard dealership.
Thanks
Enjoy life.

How do the outboard dealerships look like these days in your old area?
Good question..my old dealership location in Stockholm is a computer store today.
Less than a handful dealers left selling outboards and service today. (Re-power)
Everything comes pre-rigged from the boat factories and dealers are more like MarineMax..many locations.
Nimbus Boats (public company) just purchased the three largest boat dealers around Stockholm.
Outboards today in Sweden are Yamaha-Mercury and Suzuki..yes in that order.

The 1984 Stockholm F1-V8 GP was the weekend June 30/July 1.
Same set up and location as 1983. Saturday and Sunday evening race.
Lots of issues the weeks before this race for me.
1. Sponsorship up in the air and I needed a new Burgess boat and much more. The $10,000.00 for each race OMC promised by one time sponsorship race deals was by far not enough. Very hard to find a great sponsor for a full season.
2. Renato Molinari was pouring money in his Martini racing team. We learned he made his own short mid section and gear case out of titanium. No way I could afford stuff like that.
3. Driver security was a concern for lots of reasons.
I talked to George Lamy OMC Belgium again before the Stockholm race..Told him I do my own sponsorship for the race.
Drove to the OMC Sweden headquarter in Vällingby outside Stockholm to meet with Bengt Nilsson..the CEO for OMC Sweden.
I had made up my mind and I wanted my friend Bengt to be the first to know..
The Stockholm GP was going to be my last race.
F1-V8 racing was no fun anymore ..and if no fun you must stop. If not you kill yourself from bad driving..you must be hungry to be a good safe driver.
I guess I was the first one to start the retirement trend..a few weeks later after Tom Percival crashed and left us in Liege, Belgium Roger Jenkins retired..So did Renato after the 1984 season.
A few pictures of my Lasse Ström Marin sponsored #8 Burgess/Evinrude V8 in the 1984 Stockholm GP.
Now I could concentrate on getting my Evinrude dealership grow faster than ever..A Yamaha Center was considered.
Did meet with the Yamaha distributor for Sweden a few times..but my export business was way to good to change anything.
First some reading from Powerboat & Waterskiing.

Lars: Why and when did you get out of the marine business; your Evinrude dealership.
Thanks for asking Rotary John,
The Stockholm location for my dealership was Tobaksspinnargatan 4.
A 3,800 square ft space in the street level of a residential building.
Large display windows and some parking outside. Also garage doors to bring in boats etc.
The City of Stockholm-EPA was not really happy with me running an outboard business with sales and service there.
Our workshop did have a large test tank for outboards with an exhaust fan all the way up on the roof. This was done before me..when it was Melins Motor and grandfathered in.
This large residential building sold and the new owner had a plan to restore the building. For some reason they forgot to end my 3 year lease late 1987 when it expired..meaning I was there for another 3 years. There was no way to kick me out and start restoring the building.
The owner of the building did everything he could to find me a similar business location but very hard in the City of Stockholm.
I made him an offer..I move back to my old place just outside Stockholm where I started my business 1975..I still used that location for boat service.
I gave him a number..and a few days later we agreed and I was back at my old place. I think it took us a month to get out.
Still running my Evinrude dealership at my old location and some time later sold the business. I think it was 1989/90.
This is my old location in red today..

This picture came up at FB today..Roberto Saviero, Italy boat # 4 died a few weeks after I retired from racing at the Stockholm GP 1984.
He crashed at testing back home in Italy.

The OMC outboard business and the effect of a new business policy by OMC overseas.
Sweden have always been a great market for boating for a lot of reasons. The beautiful archipelago in many parts of the country. The one outside Stockholm is still the most popular for boaters.
Sweden use to be the number three country in Europe for outboard sales.
There was three Swedish owned companies building up the Evinrude-Johnson outboard sales-popularity during sixties & seventies.
AB Linco and AGB..AB Linco was the Evinrude distributor and AGB the Johnson distributor in the sixties. AB Linco owned AGB.
Around 1970 OMC told AB Linco they could not have both Johnson and Evinrude in Sweden.
Billy Huzell and his company Huzells took over Evinrude.
Now it was an outboard sales war in Sweden between AGB Johnson and Huzells Evinrude.
Both companies owned more or less the new outboard sales in Sweden. NKK the Swedish distributor for Mercury did pretty good but was way behind Evinrude -Johnson.
AGB promoted Johnson very effective with great dealers and sponsorship of fun events. Also boat racing.
Huzells was doing the same thing and Billy Huzell was a very strong business leader. Signed up ABBA as Evinrude supporters.
Help me start my own Evinrude outboard business 1975.
A perfect timing..the Swedish new outboard sales peaked 1975/76. Around 50,000 new outboards was sold 1976. Probably 40,000 was Evinrude Johnson.
OMC Waukegan kicked out Huzells and AGB 1977...just told them to hit the road..Took over the sales in Sweden with a new subsidiary OMC Sweden owned by OMC 1977.
(This was happening all over Europe..not only Sweden)
Well..worked for a few years but overall outboard sales went down..OMC could not keep up with Yamaha & Suzuki in a lot of ways.
Huzells was now the Swedish distributor for Suzuki and AGB Mariner.
Later in the mid-nighties OMC was looking for an independent Swedish distributor again..OMC Sweden failed.
OMC,Waukegan even asked me..!!
Duells..a company in Gothenburg was the distributor for Evinrude to the end of OMC..
Today's outboard sales in Sweden are Yamaha, Mercury and Suzuki.
Evinrude/Johnson long gone..
So..when some people get upset with my export, they don't really know the OMC history overseas.
My export over a few years was still sales for OMC/ Evinrude.. made possible from their own policy.
Just a lot of unnecessary shipping.
First picture is Billy Huzell in a familiar t-shirt..the rest is Huzell Evinrude - AB Linco Evinrude & AGB Johnson ads.

Early 1985 OMC asked me if I was interested in getting back to the F1-V8 series. OMC needed a Swedish/Scandinavian driver in the series.
This was when both Hodges and Velden was developing the new safety cell.
George Lamy..(still at OMC Belgium) told me he could get me a ride in another team..like Velden or Hodges.
This was when the famous Pro 1 race pro-motor was hired by OMC.
https://svera.se/blogg/pro-one-the-uim-f1-v8-race-promotor-1985/
I told OMC the only way for me to get back in to racing is with my own team and a full season main sponsor. No sponsor like that was available for any driver. Martini was also gone but Renato was running a two boat team with Barry Woods and Kicco Vildoli as his drivers.
My friend Bertil Wik signed up to drive one of the two boats in Team Hodges.
Bertil Wik and I did visit Second Effort together in Florida early spring 1985 after Bertil signed with Hodges.
My experience with driving race boats owned by someone else was no good. I wanted to control my racing equipment and not forced the race/test something I did not like.
Pro 1 was hitting the ground running and got a very good start in Munich, Germany 1985.

There is an emptiness in me at today's outboard racing..
OMC did supply racing outboards up to the last day in business. (SST45 - SST60 & some other engines.
BRP did not care one cent for racing.
This makes today's racing a bit boring for us Evinrude/Johnson lovers.
Tim Seebold is normally running the SST45 class as a support racing class in the NGK F1 Series.
The 2021 NGK F1 series here at Lake of the Ozarks was a last minute deal and with only one day allowed for racing, cuts must be done.
No SST 45 but the popular heavy duty TriHulls was run. All TriHulls are using older style OMC V4 1632cc cross-flow.
Some holes are drilled in the mid section for better sound. Extremely fun to watch..They drive like there is no tomorrow..bumping in to each other around the turns.
The #9 TriHull is raced by Whittney Terry Fletcher of Texas..and she was the winner. A tough girl..don't mess with her..

If I were a promoter on a limited budget and time, the ONLY class I would choose to invite would be these marvelous Texas tri-hulls.
- Cheap equipment price.
- OMC V4 powered (lots and lots of fishing motors out there)
- Intense racing, hull-to-hull, trading paint, etc
- Easy for spectator to identify with home product (Tri Hull and V4 fishing motor)
This class reminds me of USA mid west open wheel dirt track guys.:smiletest:

This happened to Barry while testing during the morning of the 1986 Toledo Grand Prix, off the race course (proper). Somehow he hit a concrete bridge - a big one.
My most vivid (and hopefully accurate) memory was Barry's appearance that evening at the post-race banquet. Just back from the hospital with his face covered in bandages and a sling on his arm, Barry promptly stepped up to the stage, smartly dressed, and amazingly wearing a huge smile. Everyone in the room was thrilled to see that, once again, Barry Woods had miraculously survived yet another wild crash in his long and successful career - as was Toledo's Mayor, Donna Owens, who was standing beside Barry Caris, Bob DeGrenier and other F1 execs. Never one to shy away from the limelight, Woods then jumped at an opportunity to entertain us all by giving the Mayor a big hug and kiss! Of course the crowd went wild!!

Powerabout, the OMC wasn't doing really that well at all.
The post says: "we noticed the powerhead jostling around. Appeared like the engine bracket had broken"
That certainly sounds like the OMC was stuffed, to me!
As a result of the "trim in" position the broken bracket would have caused, it's quite possible that's sole the reason the hull "stuffed" into the surface of the water?? Simply my humble opinion, nothing more or nothing less.
Final result of incident: entire rig... stuffed.

Vague memories that OMC was having fatigue failure problems with the F1 V8 transom bracket and they were considering casting the bracket out of steel instead of aluminum. If they switched to steel, the foundry tooling would have to be completely remade. Never did hear how they sorted this out?

The original 6" design has the vertical lift built into the mid in one casting, clever design but it wasnt strong enough so they sliced the lift/swivel part off and machined it from steel and bolted it to the rest.
My guess is they were all changed, I have only seen a few photos of the original

Barry had a knack for using some uncanny racing lines on a course. The bridge story reminds me of a local club OPC race we held on the Willamette River (Willamette Park?) in Portland OR. Barry showed up to "test" with his CCC Evinrude rig. I had never seen a CCC run in person before so this was quite an experience for me. Barry's racing line took up the whole dang river from bank to bank so Barry managing to hit a bridge is no surprise LOL

The 1984 B & H /Gold Racing ...
I am not sure how Cees Van Der Velden did it..but he took over the Benson & Hedges/Gold racing sponsorship 1984.
He started a three boat team and Luigi Valdano, Italy was dropped as a team member/driver and replaced by Arthur Mostert
Lots of promotion money was spent and a very impressive F1-V8 race team.

I got this picture from a friend of mine in Denmark a few years ago.
Its from the 1973 Scandinavian SE Class championship race in Holbæk, Denmark.

The Evinrude 65SS engine was only sold 1973. A special outboard made by OMC to win in the UIM SE class.
(Yes..it was legal)
Good enough to beat the Merc, Carniti, Konig and some Chrysler.
You can see the shift level on the mid section and the X-115 gear case.
Not sure if the Johnson was called SS or not.
I don't think OMC sold this engine in the USA.
Most of those engines was returned to OMC after the 1973 season.
The 1974 OMC UIM SE class engine was way better..10 to 15 MPH faster.

Marty..is her name and a very famous lady here at the lake.
She is an icon here after some 30 years lake living.
Marty goes the the YMCA fitness center with Carina every other day.
Not so much Zumba for her but doing other things at the fitness center.
You can find Marty at nightclubs and bars on the Bagnell Dam Strip a few times a week.
She brags about her friend Lars and tell people boat racing stories from Paris, London and Stockholm I have told her about.:)
She still drives her Corvette and stayed up late last night at her 83 years young birthday.
She is one tough fun great friend.
Congratulations.

Was looking back at this thread and this was a very scary moment in Bristol 1977..!!The driver in the green boat RAG 11 which was a brand new Velden outfit ON class 2.0litre and its first ever race was Alan Gibson he was a older driver probably over 50 Cees drove straight over him but Alan had luck on his side that day.Cees took his boat back to holland to be repaired i assumed Cees would have done this for a generous price. The boat was replaced for the next big race and i was told Cees charged him for a new one.Alans next big race was the Thames race he finished the first days race but in the 2nd days race alan barrel rolled right in front of me it was like a big hand had grabbed his propeller and the boat had rolled and stopped dead they lifted his outfit out of the water and found a length of rope round his prop. After these accidents Alans run of bad luck finished his racing career but his son carried on racing this outfit.

Here is the full amazing story :
A Swedish success, “propped into racing” by a Norwegian 1973
After a few years in the Sport, a big possibility opened up in the winter 1972/73. Hans Holmen who worked for Evinrude Sweden called me and said that Huzells and Evinrude has picked me and one other Swede to get the new Evinrude 65 SS ( for free) that was designed to be a winner in the SE class.
One condition, I have to buy a new SE Cat from Italy. There was two choices, Abbate or Clerici and I picked Clerici without really a good reason.
We where late to order, but Clerici promise to have the boat ready in June that summer, but that was OK because OMC was late with the new 65 SS also.
I friend of mine lent me and older Schulze cat and I used my stock Evinrude 65 hp. At the Swedish Championship in Torsby, Varmland, I ended up around fifth.
Me and my dad Roland took the Coffee delivery truck and headed to Cremona, Italy with a big bag full of Lire (Italian Cash) to pick up the new very good looking cat.
Back to Sweden to install the brand new 65 SS Evinrude, that had just arrived.
There was one big problem, this engine was using left hand props, and there was not many around. I found one 2 blade prop used for the Mercury BP’s, but not very fast at testing.
The big race of the year was the European Championship in Lappeenranta Finland and OMC’s Racing boss Jim Wagner had a lay over in Stockholm, on his way to Finland with Roger Jenkins #56 Clerici/Evinrude boat (last picture). I got the opportunity to test factory driver Roger Jenkins propellers in Sweden and my boat was flying.
This was a 3 blade cleaver left hand rotation and Jim Wagner promised me that if I showed up in Finland he was going to let me use Roger Jenkins spare prop.
Me, Holmen and friend Curre took the ferry to Finland and when we arrived at the race there was 45 boats with Mercury, Carniti, Konigs, Evinrude and Johnson engines, but Roger Jenkins refused to let me borrow any of his/OMC’s propellers.
I was very disappointed and was walking around in the pit, when I ran in to Tor Smith Ingebrittsen from Norway. He had an older home built boat, and he showed me his prop that looked like the one Jenkins used. We made a deal and exchanged props with a handshake.
There was no time for testing and when they dropped the green flag I was flying through the field and after a few laps I lead the race and pulled away. I won the heat with half a lap, and everybody went crazy regarding my prop. Many drivers offered my new friend from Norway lots of money for his prop, that he lent me but he was cool and said it belongs to Lars. Next heat the Italian drivers was trying to run me over in the start, and later pushed me up on one of the turning buoys and I was disqualified and had some damage to the boat but we fixed that overnight.
I do not remember the third heat, but I had to win the last one, and I did.
I was now declared the winner and the new 1973 European Champion, and Jim Wagner was forced to come over to my boat and congratulate me. Lars and his friends had the biggest after race party they have ever seen in Lappeenranta. (Roger Jenkins left early for the airport)
This was the beginning of my professional boat racing carrier and my Outboard Business success.
Thanks to everybody helping me.
The first picture show the #99 leading and pulling away..!!:)

If I remember Jimbo ran a 2 way kilo run @ 108/110. The 120+ I was referring to was the initial testing on the rotary in Fl. At Parker both rotaries were leading a 7l hydyo that had been clocked @140 the week before. I remember Jimbo saying he never ran that fast again with the rotary. I still have the Mechanics Illustrated magazine issue from the ‘70’s where they announced the new rotary w/Jimbo and even allowed their editor to drive it.
Also remember seeing plenty of race coverage of them cuz I had all the pics on my bedroom walls.
Man to have some of them back....
Also remember riding my 20” Schwinn Stingray the 10 mls to our local Johnson dealer to beg for posters, stickers and patches.
One famous poster they gave me was the one w/the rotary leading the V-6 CCC, leading the V-4 Stinger GP.
Old post but please post some of the racing pictures from the magazine.

You got to remember also, these speed were being run on 2/3 yr. old Scotties made for the 160HP V-4 in 1973.
I'm not so sure I believe anybody went 120+ in a full deck tunnel. Picklefork? Yes.........If Jimbo made any kind of pass at 120+ the balance had to be perfect and the rotary at negative trim. My opinion.
Anybody know of any kilo records set by a full deck tunnel @ 120+?

South Africa racing 1975 - "PB 200"
One of the best experience in my boat racing history.
Got invited to race the BP 200 at the river Vaal and spent a week with my racing hero Jimbo McConnell and the technician "Mouse"
Yes..I won the OE class race..but even better was to get to know Jimbo & Mouse.
We have been to Needles, CA to met up with Jimbo and his lovely wife Cathy a few times. We are all getting older..Jimbo's life is a bit tough after his bad F1-V8 racing accident..Cathy knows boat racing history like no body else and is the nicest person you can ever meet.
Mouse left us a few years ago. R.I.P.

I remember Jimbo testing the rotary in FL on a 17' Black & White Scotti at 121/125 MPH in 1973. I could make a guess of the Rotaries speed at Windemere my boat was running around 90mph in the race i would say the Rotaries were running 105 mph the fastest of the bunch maybe 110 mph.And i would say Mike Downard did run some negative trim maybe when his fuel load was low in the race.

If my memory is correct the rotaries were running the 14/23 gearcase at Windemere. 110 MPH sound's about right. Jimbo's testing I referred to had the 15/17 gearcase and was able to hang it out. Remember Downard was the slowest of the rotaries entered. Woods lead Van der velden's T-3 by 6 minutes after the first hr. I suspect he was going a little faster than 110MPH.

Cees was in charge..the team owner, number one team driver..he also used his race # 1.
All boats was built by Velden Racing.

This boat was more or less brand new. Very nicely built. The owner was a Texas Lawyer and I met up with him early 1988 during an Offshore race in South Florida. The boat was the Pace boat for the race.
I talked to Marvin Gatrett at Evolution Marine in Louisiana and he told me the engines was the very best with finger ports like the pure racing V8.
We agreed about a price for the boat including the trailer.
My friend Patrick Rinne in Finland was very happy and asked me to make sure everything was working correct at the run later in North Miami.
I dont remember who was with me at the test run..maybe Marvin Gatrett..but the boat was very fast..dont remember the speed but around 100MPH..and wobbling pretty bad wide open..You really needed to use all your racing skills to drive this boat.
Everything was now ready to close the deal when the Texas Lawyer called again..
He now wanted $10,000.00 more..if not the boat was not for sale...!!
WOW..I called Patrick Rinne in Finland again and told him the news..
I cant write what he said...but he wanted the boat bad and was ready to send the extra money.
The first picture is from USA and the second during the race Stockholm/Sweden - Helsinki/Finland.

First Company to produce FIVE MILLION OUTBOARDS – History was made in 1978 when Johnson Motors produced their five-millionth outboard - coinciding with the introduction of the new 235 hp V-6 Sea-Horse, the world’s most powerful production outboard at that time. That year also saw the introduction of a 150 hp V6 that joined the 200 and 175 in the V6 line-up.
While it took 31 years for Johnson to reach the one-million motor mark as noted in a previous post (1922 – 1953) and leading the industry at that point, it only took 25 years (1953 – 1978) to produce 4 million additional outboards – an indication of just how fast, and large, the outboard market had grown during those years. The Catalog Cover - WE GOT LETTERS – Typically, you feel blessed if someone says, ”nice catalog cover.” In this case, however, we got dozens of letters. Gorgeous! Beautiful! Fantastic! WOW! Apparently, however, they weren’t referring to the outboard since they also asked: What’s her name? What’s her phone number? Where does she live? Oh well, it was a… ‘nice cover.’

Plenty of water. Actually, the lake is sitting near the full point at 448.42' currently, with a full pool value of 450'. It has to be maintained between 445-450', so there is always plenty, but I'll get a picture for you this weekend if you require. :)
My reservation is already booked for the race. Looking forward to it!

The UIM Offshore 3 - N class..(up to 2 liter)
N-661 Argo/Johnson Stinger GP.
There was around five boats in Scandinavia with Johnson Stinger GP/Evinrude Super Stranger racing in the N class.
No Mercury could keep up with the OMC V4 racing power in this class.
Just another fact..:)

Do you recall the class specs for UIM SD? I was running SD in APBA at that same time and I wonder how they compare.

The UIM SD class was at that time 500 up to max 700 cc production engines. Homologation and approved from UIM was a must. Some minimum measurements for the boat..V-hul/ or cat.

How about weight, fuel and gearcase restrictions?
No weight limit, pump gas and production stock gear-case meeting the homologation specs.

We had a minimum weight of about 550 lb. Other wise the same. would have liked to run against some of the UIM boats.

This famous black N-282 Argo/Johnson Stinger V4..Offshore race boat won a lot of races 1972. (Beating all the different models in line 6 Merc)
The pilot was Ulla Maria Smeds and Sari Seppälä was her co-pilot.
I did see the girls take the overall win in Nådendal, Finland same year. (I was racing the E class)
The two girls where like Rock Stars in Finland..
