Sounds similar to our Formula 150 over here.
I was involved in a project to build some 2.7’s for them.
The 2.7 OMC’s are Bridgeport’s and very strong on light hulls.
Best heads and carbs they ever released.

The F1-V8 Gold Team/Benson & Hedges run by Cees Van Der Velden 1983/84
Today I asked Carina to try on the race sweater I got from Christer Rosenholtz
last week.
This is the F1-V8 Gold Team/Benson & Hedges run by Cees Van Der Velden 1983/84.
The race program is from the F1-V8 race in Paris 1984.
I raced in the International Travel Card team with Tom Percival there.
I think Carina makes the Gold Team look good..!!..
EDIT:
I maybe need to explain this a little bit better.. I got the Gold Team/Benson&Hedges sweater from Christer Rosenholtz at the Miami Boat Show last week.
He came from Sweden to visit..
Christer´s father Roland was the Officer of the Day at the Stockholm F1-V8 GP
1983 and 1984.
Also the President of the Swedish Power Boat Federation back then.
Cees Van Der Velden gave Roland the sweater at the race 29 years ago.

I think this was Jimbo's second Goatboat, first one was smaller and I think Jimbo ran it in 71/72. This one Jimbo ran in Toronto in the 1973 PS100 and won over a field of top-notch boats/drivers.

The Ralph Evinrude Test Center in Stuart, Florida is for sale.
Description
First time on the market since the mid-1960s. This is a very rare opportunity to purchase an iconic, historic property in beautiful Stuart, FL. Ralph Evinrude purchased it for the Ralph Evinrude Outboard Test Center. The facility first opened near the Roosevelt Bridge in the mid-1960s to field test in saltwater Evinrude, Johnson and OMC motors. Even though the facility’s operations have been reduced since Evinrude was bought by Bombardier Recreational Products of Quebec in 2001, testing still takes place there daily. However, they do not need a facility this large so time to sell and move to a smaller updated facility nearby making for a very rare opportunity to purchase such a rare property.
This waterfront site located on the Saint Lucie River has easy access to the Okeechobee waterway, the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. Flagler Avenue is parallel to and has easy access to Dixie Hwy. This is a Convenient south Florida location approximately one-half mile north of downtown Stuart, Martin County, Florida. Near Witham Field, although there is no scheduled commercial airline service at the airport, the facility does maintain an operational air traffic control tower and is home to two fixed base operators (FBO) and more than 200 private and business aircraft and one-half hour (by car) north of the West Palm Beach Airport.
This all adds up to a site that works for many uses.
Price $17,000,000

Charlie Strang designed the first twin pinions while he was at Jones Engines waiting for his non-compete with Kiekhaefer to end. He worked with an engineer at OMC Waukegan who did the actural design layout - Hank Duer. Clarence Blanchard designed the CCC gearcase, which btw had a pitot tube cast into the strut/skeg. The pitot idea was later dropped because they would plug up and could not be cleared. I designed the CC, 727, V8 and SST100. Karl did not design any of our products.

Amsterdam was always an interesting race. I was racing the OE class and broke down. Remember watching Alf Bullen driving really hard under the very rough Amsterdam conditions.
Alf was using the new Johnson RS V6 2.448 liter cross-flow in the OZ class.

The new Johnson V6 RS/Evinrude CCC 2.448cc came out 1976.
A very cool design and winner. This race was one of the roughest races i ever drove in it was the last race Seebold drove a Molinari boat he only ran his own boats after this race Barry Woods ran the first OZ OMC Looper engine and Alfi Bullen was the first UK driver to race the new OZclass 2.5 crossflow engine i had a lucky race i managed to stay in front for the first 40 mins until Alfi came past i managed to follow for a short while until my boat blew apart i do know Alfi Bullen had Dave Burgess carry out transom repairs for him to continue the race.

BRP currently have 2 on water test facilities for Evinrude, one on Fox Lake in IL and the Stuart FL facility. They also have indoor facilities at their Sturtevant WI facility that's all computer controlled so engines can run 24/7 in a controlled environment. They have a facility in Palm Bay, FL for the Sea Doo's.

Our service department at my Evinrude dealership helped Sture with his Evinrude CC-UIM OE-F3 class engine and you can see me standing at the edge of the dock when Sture is out testing.
We made a deal and Sture built his first UIM OE-F3 class boat we raced for the first time in Paris 6 hours 1979. We was extremely happy with the third place finish.

This is from the pit in Paris 6 Hours 1979.
The boat on the top of my trailer is the blue-orange Burgess boat. My brother Lennart and Anders Fällman drove the boat now in Paris. The one on the bottom is the one Sture built and we raced in Paris 6 hours. The new boat was ready just in time for the race. No time to test. Practice in Paris was the first time we drove the boat.
Great memories.
After the Paris race 1979 Sture started to build his second boat and after lots of testing by me and modifications by Sture we won the Paris 6 hour race 1980.

Some would classify this as equivalent to a 9 cylinder reciprocal engine.
Because each rotor has 3 combustion surfaces. Three rotors yields nine cylinders.

Could it be the first ever outboard engine with 12 combustion surfaces — Wow!
The technical debate lives on, does this engine have the ethical right to compete in the same class against 6 cylinder engines? The 12 combustion surfaces in totality have more cubic inches, than the 6 cylinders do they not?

Cees Van Der Velden.
I have so many good memories from Cees van der Velden. He was a very interesting person in many ways. Raced for him in both the F3 class and the F1-V8. You did never know what was around the corner hanging out with Cees.
My worst memory was his very bad accident in Liege, Belgium 1982.
Was watching when he crashed his Velden/Johnson V8 wide open. Pretty hard to believe he survived and came back to win another race.
Cees was also a little bit of an underdog compare to Renato and Mr Bill..but man he was a lot of fun..
We all miss you.

I was a huge fan of Mazda’s domination of the GTU class in IMSA road racing until understanding the tech rules as written for the rotaries.
Im still a rotary fan but once you look inside one and how they are classified........
BTW, I have that magazine.
As I recall, part of that story was them calling that motor the first 300 HP O/B.

In my opinion the famous Paris 6 Hour race died already 1981.
The reason was no more OZ class 1981 and no more factory OMC racing.
Ken Stevenson/Bob Spalding won the 1980 Paris 6 Hour race driving the #12 OZ class Velden/Carlsberg/Johnson RS V6 3 liter looper.
First picture below.
OMC came out with the new V8 for the OZ class 1981 and Mercury pulled out of the OZ class.
The Paris 6 hour race organization made the decision to ban the OZ class ..(over 2 liter) with help from Mercury.
Only ON max 2 liter was now allowed in the 1981 Paris race.
Reality was that the OMC factory could not compete with the powerful 3.5 liter V8 in the race for the overall win and pulled out.
Last year for a factory feud between OMC and Merc was 1980
1984 OMC and a French boat race organization came together to run a race for the OZ F1-V8 class in Paris. This time with the pit in the famous Bois de Boulogne . Still racing on river Seine but far away from the famous Eiffel tower
I raced there with my #8 Burgess/Aspen/Evinrude V8 but not a great place.
Without a factory feud between OMC and Merc the famous Paris 6 hour race was no more
I know some people having a different opinion but I think this story is 100% right.
The last Paris 6 Hour race was run 1988..with few famous drivers and no factory teams.
The 1981 Race program/entry-list show few 2 liter ON class entry’s and most of the famous boat racers names are missing.

All of the above.
Ive done both.
I cut down an OMC, ran the OEM gear case w/a nose cone.
To surface one you have to pin the carrier which I did.
The stock skeg is a joke for going fast so I added a 100% of surface area to that.
Doing that allowed me to run the longer, after market torque tab.
It ran very good at a 100+.
Ive done several that way.
To wave the OMC flag.
But I hate nose cones.
And being RPM limited, the change from OMCs 1.86:1 to Mercs 1.62:1 is worth 3” of pitch.
Its over drive to us.
So not only did OMC not give us **** for props other than the Raker and SRX (Which needs worked to run) they never gave us a decent gear case either.

Got this picture from Mats Lindstedt yesterday..a friend of mine in Sweden..not very sharp.
PARIS 6 Hours 1975
After Lorentz Näslund and I finished third in Paris 1974..we where now ready for a win in the OE class.
My Nacka Asfalt/Clerici/Evinrude SE boat was well prepared for the race..
The entry form was in time to Mr. Blodinare..
Race number 69.
Well..a good start don’t help when you hit something a few laps later and break the gear case at the far end of the race course..
Two hours to get back to the pit and the race was over..
We left Paris for a Evinrude dealer meeting on the Canary Islands
My friend Per Benson took Lorentz van and my boat back to Sweden..
I told Per.. please remember to stamp the Carne ATA document out of France..
He forgot that and a letter from OMC came later in the mail ..
My dream of winning Paris 6 hours was still a dream
This was also the last Paris with Lorentz as a co-pilot.

1931 Winner of the 132 mile race from Albany to New York City. Photo shows the winner Red Woodworth, a renowned football player of the time, crossing the finish line. His time was 3 hours and 10 minutes at an average speed of 41.8 mph. Red’s boat was powered by a 1930 Evinrude Model 178 “Four-Sixty Racer” (know as a 4-60)
The motor is the grand-daddy of the Class “F” racers. Its name is derived from the four cylinders and 60 cubic inch displacement. It’s an “opposed” engine with two rotary valves in the center of the crank (one for feeding the top cylinders and the other for feeding the bottom). Ball and roller bearings are used on the mains and rollers and needles are used on the big and small ends of the rods, respectively. It was originally sold with a large muffler but most of these were discarded when racing to reduce exhaust back pressure. Battery ignition was used for ease of starting and to enable the use of a smaller flywheel (to reduce rotational inertia). The large ports were free-flowing and aggressively timed. Its performance on gasoline was never advertised but peak horsepower was achieved at 5000 rpm. Many of the old racers used methanol as a fuel to increase performance but because the cylinder heads on this motor were integral to the cylinder blocks, it was difficult to raise the compression ratio to take full advantage of the alcohol fuel.
OMC realized the shortcomings of the integral cylinder heads and later brought out “detachable” cylinder heads to make it much easier to modify combustion chamber volumes. The carburetor is a Vacturi Model A-500. The short tower and streamlined lower unit has low-friction bearings on both drive and propeller shafts as well as a water pump with a pick-up on the front of the lower unit, above the gearcase. Two-blade bronze racing propellers were offered by OMC as well as the after-market. One of the best attributes of the 4-60 was its durability, and this often enabled racing victories when vying against faster but less durable competitors. (see photo of the 4-60 below)

Yes, that's me in the beautiful painted Formula One OZ class Molinari/Saffa/Evinrude CCC V6 race boat in the famous Paris 6 Hour race 1978. A very fast boat. Best in the business. Racing for 6 hours on the river Seine, next to the Eiffel tower and a small copy of the Statue of Liberty.
Our boat was on the front page of this German Sport-Book.

"The Bjorn Borg of powerboat racing."
The Bjorn Borg that I remember was publicly not present, when not on the tennis court. Bjorn was verbally quiet and not about "bragging."
Now on the other hand the powerboat Bjorn Borg is, should I say, more of an extrovert.
Tennis Bjorn would not create his own sport's thread, but powerboat Bjorn is not reserved in doing so. I admired the quiet methodical tennis Bjorn, when he would defeat those loud-braggadocios Americans; Jimmy Connors & John McEnroe.
However the powerboat Bjorn, is a great ambassador of powerboat racing and the outboard industry. And his public contribution; threads and posts reflect that commitment.
Keep motoring on Lars 'Bjorn' Strom. :)

Thanks Lake X Kid, I love your post..:)
I can also tell you that the OZ class #11 Molinari/Saffa boat i drove in Paris 6 hours with Angelo Vassena was a longer marathon boat. I did not like the way this boat handle the rough river Seine at all..A few weeks before I drove one of Renatos sprint boats at Idroscalo, Milan. A shorter way better boat.
Renato built him self a brand new smaller boat for the Paris 6 Hour race 1978..That boat was ready just in time for the race and extremely good and fast in the race..Renato did not have time to paint the boat in the Saffa colors..just dark blue.
Its #12 in the picture below.

When I was around Renato's Como shop in the early 1970's, his was the last boat built for Paris. There would be 4 or 5 new boats being built for the Paris 6 Hour race, depending on how many Mercury factory drivers were paired-up for the race.
The first boat would be rigged, and Renato would do a test drive. And lessons learned, if any tweaking was going to be done to enhance the boat's performance, then you can be certain the last boat constructed (Renato's race boat) will have what he accesses to be best for his race boat.
It goes with in reason, that anyone of us in the same situation would do the same. And that is the luxury of generating a small assembly line of boats, at your own race shop.
Thanks Lake X Kid, I love your post..:)

On Renato's blue boat at Paris. Notice the tarps covering the boats nose and sponsons.
That is the Renato Molinari, I remember. Sometimes I think, that was not trade secrets he was hiding, but psychological gamesmanship he did on the competition. Keep them guessing and wondering.

One more answer to this Lake X Kid,
I forgot about this but Björn Borg was living close to me outside Stockholm and Björn was a boating person. He also built a race boat and did some boat racing.
Well..maybe it was the other way around "Tennis had a Lars Strom"..:):)....näääää...

DAH propellers , Don introduced me to Jimbo when I won the nationals in Eufala Ala. Don was one of the best prop guys in the business, my brother dated one of his daughters, it was his prop that won me the nationals.
