Takes stones to ride a boat and take those shots and to ride a bosuns chair up a mast.

If I remember right Art Kennedy drove mostly Evinrude but here is a picture of Art driving a Johnson Stinger GP V4.

468532

That's Terry Leatherby's UI,UJ, SST boat, built by Harold Nauss. Terry ran that in '74, 75 and '76 prior to getting a Mod 50 rig. That decal on the front is the one OMC used to put on the JX snowmobiles. I don't know why Art is driving Terry's boat in this picture or where the picture was taken.

Wow, took me all morning to remember what RS this was. Came up from Texas and found to be quite original. First one I've had that didn't have a "box" welded on the mid, but they did drill some useless holes. Now in Florida - you can probably guess where. Yet another one with an even fire timer base and an odd fire crank! They will start and run pretty good, but will burn cylinders sooner than later.

Great memories and a perfect timing by LOZ Screen Printing in Camdenton.
Abby (the owner) called this morning and told me a small number of the newly made classic racing t-shirts Evinrude/Huzells in Sweden made 1973 was ready to be picked up.
This popular t-shirt was sold in the thousands back in 1973/74 and 75 by Evinrude/Huzells.
To dealers, at the boat shows and at the races by me.
There was many colors to pick from back in the seventies.
I made three colors so far.
Huzells also got the famous Abba involved in supporting me and Evinrude. The third picture is ABBA back in 1973 and you can see Bjorn Ulveus is wearing my yellow/blue racing shirt.
July 15 1973 is the day everything changed in my life. By far my best boat racing day ever. The race boat on the t-shirt is the one that made this amazing story possible.

"A Swedish success, “propped into racing” by a Norwegian 1973"
After a few years in the Sport, a big possibility opened up in the winter 1972/73. Hans Holmen who worked for Evinrude Sweden called me and said that Huzells and Evinrude has picked me and one other Swede to get the new Evinrude 65 SS ( for free) that was designed to be a winner in the SE class.
One condition, I have to buy a new SE Cat from Italy. There was two choices, Abbate or Clerici and I picked Clerici without really a good reason.
We where late to order, but Clerici promise to have the boat ready in June that summer, but that was OK because OMC was late with the new 65 SS also.
I friend of mine lent me and older Schultze cat and I used my stock Evinrude 65 hp. At the Swedish Championship in Torsby, Varmland, I ended up around fifth.
Me and my dad Roland took the Coffee delivery truck and headed to Cremona, Italy with a big bag full of Lire (Italian Cash) to pick up the new very good looking cat.
Back to Sweden to install the brand new 65 SS Evinrude, that had just arrived.
There was one big problem, this engine was using left hand props, and there was not many around. I found one 2 blade prop used for the Mercury BP’s, but not very fast at testing.
The big race of the year was the European Championship in Lappeenranta Finland and OMC’s Racing boss Jim Wagner had a lay over in Stockholm, on his way to Finland with Roger Jenkins #56 Clerici/Evinrude boat (last picture). I got the opportunity to test factory driver Roger Jenkins propellers in Sweden and my boat was flying.
This was a 3 blade cleaver left hand rotation and Jim Wagner promised me that if I showed up in Finland he was going to let me use Roger Jenkins spare prop.
Me, Holmen and friend Curre took the ferry to Finland and when we arrived at the race there was 45 boats with Mercury, Carniti, Konigs, Evinrude and Johnson engines, but Roger Jenkins refused to let me borrow any of his/OMC’s propellers.
I was very disappointed and was walking around in the pit, when I ran in to Tor Smith Ingebrittsen from Norway. He had an older home built boat, and he showed me his prop that looked like the one Jenkins used. We made a deal and exchanged props with a handshake.
There was no time for testing and when they dropped the green flag I was flying through the field and after a few laps I lead the race and pulled away. I won the heat with half a lap, and everybody went crazy regarding my prop. Many drivers offered my new friend from Norway lots of money for his prop, that he lent me but he was cool and said it belongs to Lars. Next heat the Italian drivers was trying to run me over in the start, and later pushed me up on one of the turning buoys and I was disqualified and had some damage to the boat but we fixed that overnight.
I do not remember the third heat, but I had to win the last one, and I did.
I was now declared the winner and the new 1973 European Champion, and Jim Wagner was forced to come over to my boat and congratulate me. Lars and his friends had the biggest after race party they have ever seen in Lappeenranta. (Roger Jenkins left early for the airport)
This was the beginning of my professional boat racing carrier and my Outboard Business success.
Thanks to everybody helping me.

This is the winning #99 Clerici/Evinrude from 1973 we used to make the t-shirt after the big win in Finland. I was very superstitious back then and used the t-shirt more or less in every race in 1974/75 and 1976.

Before the 1975 race season the Swedish Powerboat Federation offered me racing license number 1. (A great honor and I proudly accepted that) One hard thing..I must give up my race number 99, meaning my shirt is not 100% correct.
Well..as I said before..I was very superstitious and did not want the change the race number on my favorite racing t-shirt..
Worked out perfect..my racing luck continue with race number I on the boat and 99 on the t-shirt.

Well..the fact is all racing V8 blocks used fingerports. Not sure why he said so. Sometimes OMC also changed powerheads between drivers to prove every powerhead was very close in horsepower.
Here is a picture of the pistons and you can see the smaller holes for the fingerports.
If there was any testing for more horsepower Jimbo was the driver to do so.

Stephan Briggs, father of Jim Briggs, who I worked for & drove for OMC, founded Briggs & Stratton. At that time he invented the now popular automobile key staring switch, among others. I actually saw his book of inventions & patents at his house in Naples, FL. During his time at B & S he decided to revive Evinrude, purchasing the company & bringing in Ole Evinrude who had after his so called non compete started ELTO which stood for Evinrude Light Twin Outboard. He resiigned from B & S to run then called Outboard Motors Corp. with Ole as President. They then purchased Lockwood Ash & about 1926 or so bought Johnson Motors.
There is a hard cover larger sized book that OMC contarcted a professional firm to write about it's history. At one time it was in my possession but was asked to return it. It would be a Golden piece to have to see the full OMC history.

Who were the people who actually put these engines together? I know Rick Frost , Renato Molinari and Bob Thompson had their own people and probably Velden too. I got the idea that this was the primary idea behind the creation of 2nd Effort was that V8 racing product production did not take place on OMC home turf?

lars strom
07-30-2020, 10:11 AM
Well..OMC engineering-racing in Waukegan was building the powerheads. Then shipped to OMC Belgium for all the drivers overseas the first couple of years. Well..except Renato and Cees they got shipped to them directly. OMC promised all powerheads was very similar in horsepower.
Second Effort got involved 1983 and did service-repair at the US races.
As far as I know no driver/team worked on the powerheads..OMC/SE had excellent service at the races.

Well..the OMC F1-V8 powerhead used the "flat" exhaust manifold from the start 1981 to the end of 1983. I did send my 1983 engine to Waukegan , Illinois after the season and got it updated to the newer more rounded exhaust manifold. Got a bit more speed after the update.
Here is a few more carb powerhead with the flat manifold.
Again, thanks for clicking in here.

The flat exhaust, looks to be more restrictive in exhaust flow.

Kinda like the bubble back exhaust on the old 135 V-4 cross flows compared to the lower horse flat backs.

It is impressive to me to see this history and the effort and expense that they/OMC were willing to put into the R/D of that motor.
We all know Merc did too but those all started as fish motors and were modified from there.

This started as a blank chalk board w/a bunch of engineers and tuners staring at it....
Gotta love that.

Never seen the flat exhaust on a F-1 V-8.
it was the first version with rectangular exhaust cast into the block and light rods
Then they changed the casting to oval style and changed exhaust cover and somewhere in all that changed to the heavy rods so rpm was no longer a problem.
So there are 3 exhaust styles as it changed again, then added CFI then went 3.0.
I have never seen anyone list all these changes out and the order they were changed.

Who was first to develop hydraulic up / down adjustment? I think it was OMC? I know they had it on the V8 mids but I can't remember if the V4 and V6 mids did as well? Was the V8 mid section re-used for the SST100 engine program? I think when OMCs V8 race engine reached its peak in 1985 it was not long after that when Merc came up with their "new" hydraulic up/down mid section. I never understood Merc's "studs down" decision either? Those V8 steering arms were not cheap to make either..... with 2 pressed bends in each.

Now up the ex manifold if available.

I know this likely has been posted and this earlier V8 may not be right example but notice the slight uneven position #1&#5 to ex port floor.
Being an F1, even doesn't mean absolutely even order ?

Notice the fishing crank (believe it's a fishing crank and compliments the fishing exhaust layout), the V4s are significantly uneven in comparison, hope you can see that in the image in comparison to piston position of the early F1 image.

In the mid , was the bottom V4 exhaust even with the top? I know you said one outlet.

Back in 1983 there was a problem with the connecting rods screws. I remember OMC made extra strong screws and installed in my powerhead.
Later same year (in I think the Lyon, France) race the rod came out and destroyed my block crank etc. I was told by OMC my new powerhead was using updated rods but not sure.
This is the rods from the block above..but cant tell if that is the older or newer rods.

The Merc up/down mid came out in 73 just after they saw it on the OMC's. I think Jimbo and Mr Bill both said they rarely used it underway.

light rods with new bolts
note they use v4 crank and pin bearings
Large rods are huge, the bolts have 7/16 heads on them. I will try to get a photo
Both rod styles are not cracked, just machined and no dowl
Same length as production looper ( not measured but they look the same)
Crank looks the same just shorter stroke.
Balancer is the same but didnt use the viton rubber of the production engine
Production dyno tested them to 9500rpm with the late rods before shipping to check the charge coil voltage.

Sorry but I dont remember or have the correct answer to your questions.
I know for sure the racing crankshaft was not the same as production. The racing V8 came out 1981..the production V8 1985 and was a completely different powerhead.
I wish there was a picture of the racing crank. A friend of mine in Sweden is the owner of my first F1-V8 engine and he need a crank. Cant find one.
I am pretty sure when the redesigned racing V8 came out 1985 with the 6 inch mid section and fuel injection the block, pistons, rods, crank, exhaust etc. was more or less the same as the 1984 racing V8. The fuel injection was a must to fit the powerhead on the 6 inch mid section. We the drivers never worked on the powerheads..It was always OMC or later Second Effort.
This is the 3.5 liter powerhead used 1985

470868

1988 was the year when OMC sleeved down the 3.5 liter to 3.0 liter. Lots of rumors what was done and how many RPM they run them.
I was not involved at all and dont have correct info. Well one thing..I dont believe some people saying the run them all the way up to 15.000 RPM..:)

OMC was definitely first for electrically pumped up/down lift. Only thing Merc had in 73 was a manually operated (Socket crank speeder) method. It wasn't until sometime after OMCs V8 program was established that Merc came up with their powered lift system (late 80s).Only time a lift system came in handy was when wind and water conditions warranted dropping the engine a bit for rougher water. To my knowledge, neither the OMC or Merc lift systems had mechanical gauge systems (cable?) that would indicate the lift height (approx 1 inch total?).

OMC had hydraulic up & down in 1971. I used it all the way up for Lemans starts & adjusted it accordingly off turns to quickly settle down the boat! And we did have a guage that was vertical on the dash to tell where ithe travel was set.

Yeah that's the order of the crank in the pic above.

Thing is the top to bottom V4 degree spacing. It's not 45° by looking at the crank pic and pic of the #1 TDC to #5 position. It looks by eye to be low 30° high 20°spacing. This would give a more equal arrival of both 1&5 for example acoustic blowdown pressure at the mid at high rpm. That's why I was wondering if they extended the bottom V4 exhaust further than the top into the mid , that would have provided more equal tune length to the top V4. I doubt I'll ever find one of the F1 motors around here and disassembled to have a look at the crank and ex manifold and mid.

How did the location of the starter for OMC's V6 program end up between the carb banks? I assume that OMC had an advantage in doing this because OMC used a 90 degree block design versus Merc's 60 degree?

The cowling contour lines of the Velden during this period had to be by far the best for styling. It's "camel back" look reminded me of a "knight's horse" profile in a chess set. Molinari's were functional but lacked some kind of flair for styling. Both Velden and Molinari race boats never evolved to a point where canopies were used in the 90's.
