Thanks mabw,

Well the 6 inch mid section was possible because at the same time OMC developed the fuel injection. (1985)
A carb powerhead was not possible to use on the 6 inch mid section, but you could change the carb powerhead to fuel injection.
If you look close at this picture you can see there is not enough space for a carb powerhead. (Lower part of the front)
Thanks for asking.
PS..You can also see pretty good at this picture how short the 6 inch mid section is..(light grey casting)

http://www.screamandfly.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=392051&d=1510617462

This picture show the new replaced 6 inch mid section with stronger material and a better casting.
Every 6 inch mid section was replaced to the new stronger/better one during the later part of th 1985 F1-V8 season.

Here is the F1-V8 powerhead timeline for tunnel boat racing. Part 1

This is the first style F1-V8 powerhead 3.5 liter, looper carb model released 1981 and we raced up to the end of 1983.
A "flat exhaust manifold" was used.

After the 1983 season all drivers shipped the F1-V8 3.5 liter powerheads to OMC and following update was done.
A new better/smoother exhaust manifold was installed, new stronger connecting rod screws and an optional more aerodynamic engine cowling was available.

This new engine was releasted 1985. Still 3.5 liter.

Very sexy Evinrude F1-V8 and you must love the World Champion text/info.
The 3.5 liter 2 stroke V8 looper, fuel injection with six inch mid section was available for UIM/APBA F1 racing over 32 years ago. Still the fastest and most loved racing outboard ever.

From 1985 up to the end of the 1987 season the basic F1-V8 3.5 liter, looper with fuel injection was the same for racing.
Yes, OMC and Second Effort tested many different thing to be ready if Merc came back with a new T4/T5..
Twin spark plugs cylinder heads and different types of fuel injections. There was also larger bores V8 tested but OMC was promising all the race teams that everybody raced similar stuff race day.
Other small changes was the CFI box was moved to the rear of the exhaust manifold instead of the top.
The newer exhaust castings did have "ears" for that.

You can see in the photo 1246 posted the mid included the housing over the swivel pin hence the up down hoses in it.
Later version the swivel housing is steel and bolts to the mid, much stronger
Thats the only photo of the original mid i have seen.
I guess omc swapped them all out?
So 1988 first 3.0
Thanks Lars

I don't really remember how the final fix was done by OMC but they did a very good job fixing this major issue fast. Never a problem again.

Not sure about this powerabout,
I think the unpainted 6 inch mid section in this picture is the newer stronger one. There was not even time to paint them. The original one was painted to mach the rest of the engine.
Maybe OMC made a few different replacement 6 inch mid sections but the problem was fixed and OMC paid for the fix. Free of charge.

PS you can also see the CFI box is on top of the powerhead..later it was an the back of the exhaust manifold.

Interesting reading about boat racing safety from 1985.
OMC and Second Effert was first in the USA to make tunnel boat circuit racing safer. Lots of time and money was spent.
This is also something that maybe Rich Luhrs like to read.

Yes, 1988 OMC agreed to sleeve down the F1-V8 to 3,0 liter for the US F1 series.

No powerabout,
The 6 inch mid section with fuel injection came out 1985 when Pro One was running the F1-V8 series. The sleeved down 3 liter model came out 1988.
Some of the first 6 inch mid sections was recalled..casting problems and they broke off..!!
In the Stockholm GP 1985 Barry Woods lost his engine in the pit turn..his EFI brain ended flying in to the pit..:)
We dived for the engine the day after and took it to my Evinrude dealership.

Some interesting reading from Stockholm F1-V8 GP 1985.

A very nice fellow and we raced together in the Aspen Formula 3 1982. He entered the V8 series later and did pass the test. He also finished third in a F1-V8 race.

Another fact is OMC did run the very successful F1-V8 series for nine years.
Started 1981 and ended after the 1989 season.
Millions of spectators around the world and sometimes up to 500,000 people watching from the shore.
Many major sponsors and here is a list of some..
Cool, Aspen, Carlsberg, JPS, Benson&Hedges, Martini, Castrol, Nordica, Nashua, Denim, Champion, Trimite, Peter Stuyvesant, Gordon's Gin, Tecnocar, Beneteau, Dole, ITC,
Lasse Strom Marin, Naiu, ToTip, Stefanel and many more.

The eighties was by far the most interesting time in tunnel boat racing.

Well..1984 the last year without safety cockpits we lost two drivers during racing. Luigi Valdono in Holland and Tom Percival in Belgium.
A french driver lost his life in Paris during testing before the race. His first try to race F1-V8.
In Italy one Italian driver lost his life during testing without rescue boats available.
A bad and sad season but the start for the safety cells.
OMC, Chris Hodges and Cees Van Der Velden spent lots of time and money to develop tunnel boats safety cells..

I got this yesterday from the Canadian boat racing champion and friend Mark Rotharmel. Mark raced the F1-V8 series also.
Thanks Mark very interesting reading from Montreal Gazette early 1985.
I like to add..Mercury did nothing at this time to improve tunnel boat safety. Only OMC, Chris Hodges and Cees Van Der Velden.

Well 2US70, I purchased my first motorhome 1995 and we have been traveling this great country for over 20 years. Been to 48 states many times and most NASCAR and INDYCAR race tracks. My friend Kenny Brack drove A.J.Foyt's #14 car to a Indy 500 victory 1999.
Now we are back motor homing full time again and this is going to be our home base summertime. We love Lake of the Ozarks, MO in the summer.

Yes you right Instigator. It is a 2.7 or 3.0 looper production block on the floor and the new smaller Evinrude E-TEC is I think model year 2014..
Still the Johnson RS V6 race engine on the Molinari transom was introduced 1976 by OMC and was sold up to maybe 1979.

The Evinrude/Johnson 150/175HP V6 60 degree looper is a very good engine.
I got two new 150 Ocean Pro 1993 on a 24 fot CC boat. Put over 1000 hours on the engines and never a problem.
Powerful and very good fuel mileage.

A few years ago rules was changed and you must now use a EPA approved 150 HP outboard in the W-150 and the V-150 class.
That did not stop the former OMC 150HP 60 degree looper from winning.
The new 150H.O Evinrude E-TEC was the new engine of choice to take you to the winners circle.

More from Roslagsloppet Offshore Race..Conny Hertz and co-pilot Micke Hulting drove the yellow Twister Cat to victory in W-150 class.

This is a popular class for cats and production/stock 150 hp outboards.
Engines have to be clean EPA approved.
Conny is using a brand new 2014 Evinrude 150 H.O. with graphite paint job.
Not only is the # W- 89 rig beautiful but really fast.
Fog and a tricky race course could not stop them today.
Well..second place boat was also powered by a 150 E-TEC.
Martin Lofstrom/Andreas Nordén in Twister Cat #49.
Congratulations to both of you and keep on racing..!!
First result W-150 Class.

Same thing in the V-150..Evinrude 150 H.O. E-TEC still winning..

Marcus Friberg/Nitra Boats and Evinrude 150 H.O. the 2014 Nordic Champions.

Marcus is one tough race driver and now a boat builder also.
Last year he started to build the molds for his own design race boat.
After some testing early spring 2014 with a brand new Evinrude 150 H.O Graphite he was ready for the competition.

Won the V-150 class in Oskarshamn a few weeks ago.
Not bad for a brand new boat and we all know the 150 E-TEC is one powerful engine in the 150 hp class.
Well The Smogen Offshore race was run Friday and Saturday. A really tough race run on open water. Sometimes ten ft waves.
The new Nitra boat was dancing like a queen on top of the water and after the second race Saturday Team Friberg was the new Nordic Champion in the popular V-150 class.
Co-pilot Anton Skwirt did a superb job to make sure Marcus was driving the shortest way around the race course.
Congratulations to the big win and many more to come..
Pictures by Jesper Zander and Sofie Westberg. Thank you very much.

Marcus Friberg and co-pilot Anton Skwirut won the V-300 class in Roslagsloppet Offshore race.

This year the Team Kemetyl Racing #27 Nitra/Evinrude G2 250H.O. had enough fuel on board to reach the finish line in this long race.
Last year the X-27 was leading the race but run out of fuel a few miles before the checkered flag.
Well done and congratulations to Marcus that just became a proud dad.

Found these in some old files Lars.
I shot them at Cincinatti Ohio, in I think '89.

The Second Effort team was like Penskee being there. Very impressive.

I like the first 2 shots to show how big the boats got after trying to run the 8s on the early, 17' Champ Boats.

I think that was the yr the Merc Wizard broke off the boat. We got there just as they were pulling it out of the water.

Well..I followed the Larry Smith Scarab 38 with 3 X Evinrude F1-V8 powered on Offshore mid sections with great interest back in 1982 and my friend Johnny Mann
was in charge for the boat at Ralph Evinrude Test Center in Florida.
Remember the bad accident out testing in Stuart when two people lost their life. I think it was during the Bristol Race in England 1982, remember calling Ric McChesney from Bristol to find out if he was OK or not. Ric was the third person on board when the boat crashed.
I think the "Assault on the Mississippi" was 1982.
Not sure what they did 1984..??

The #83 boat in the picture must be a different boat because its rigged with 3 X production Johnson V8 3.6 liter engines. First available late 1984 early 1985.

Lars--obviously 1983--

But a few years earlier, Magoon, Mercury/GG were interested in setting a Trans-Atlantic record --with outboards

Of course the boat would be a Cigarette--but a Big Cigarette--- Fifty Feet!

The power would be six 2.4's

After lots of testing --the project was dropped.( I need help from Mike Farmer!!)

Magoon--with the help of John Stenbeck, Roger Penske, Howard Arneson, me, etc. converted the boat to inboard Detroit Diesel Power

The President's son Challenged Magoon to a race to New York--and somehow? they were going to raise enough money to restore the Statue of Liberty??

Sam,

It seemed OK testing in the canal but the photographer kept asking for one more wave jump. I did 2. I told him "no" these boats weren't meant for that. At the time I was driving V-4/Molinarini's so this was quite a come down. No set up or prop changes other then how Hal rigged the boat. BTW I lived in Florida at the time & Hal was a family friend in addition to having raced with us out of NJ

Lars, this is a friends toy. He used to drag race it but last I heard it had been in storage for many yrs.

I once asked him about not running it more often and his comment to me was, "every time I drive that thing it tries to eat me!".
Hull is a very early, one of the first as I recall, STV Pro Comp w/the sprint bottom which is basically a vee w/tiny sponsons. Designed for a 200 hp 2.4 Merc.

It is VERY light. I'd guess low 500's. You lay your hand on the deck and it flexes.

Ive ridden in it (sitting on the gas tank) a couple times. Last time out, water was very rough from wakes and he only had short patches of clean water.
Only functional gauge was the digital tach. Watching over his shoulder I watched it go from 6500 to 8500 in what seemed like a 100'!
I ran it through the prop calculator and came up with 127.

Boat was on radar at 141 20 yrs ago.

Evil, might be a fair description.

Thanks Instigator,

I have seen this STV in the cyber world a few times but did know the history.
I can ad its the 1984 model of F1-V8 powerhead because the exhaust manifold is the newer style (see red X)
One more thing..OMC told us to never use a filter like the red arrow is pointed at in the last picture. I could restrict fuel and not good when you have oil mixed fuel.

Close racing, fast enough and plenty of boats.
Very few bad accidents.
OMC supplied most of the reliable engines to a very reasonable price.

What did it cost to run one of those boats?

Well I don't remember the cost but here is my experience from 1990/91.

1990 me and my brother Lennart raced together in the Formula 3 class with a two boat team we named The Champ's.
The cost was reasonable and the support from OMC was very good.
This is Lennarts #21 Burgess/Evinrude F3 boat from 1990 below and our race truck.

http://www.screamandfly.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=393868&d=1512440472

Lennart won the F3 World title that year and was ready for the 2 liter Mercury class.
We purchased a new Burgess and a new Merc 2 liter engine from Mercury Racing.
Everything was rigged brand new and help from the very best like Gert Lowisin and others.
At the first testing in Sweden the powerhead blow up. Pistons and block destroyed.
We talked to Mercury racing and there was a problem with pistons at that time but no warranty. We where forced to purchase a new powerhead and took delivery at Lennarts first Merc 2 liter race in Chalon, France in the fall of 1990.

No help from Mercury racing and we purchased during the 1991 season eleven sets of pistons from Mercury racing. (66) and never really finished a race. (piston problems)
After the 1991 season I pulled out of the deal with Lennart to race the Merc 2 liter class. I guess later Mercury Racing fixed the issue with bad pistons but to late for Lennarts success in the Merc 2 liter class.:nonod:

Well I don't remember the cost but here is my experience from 1990/91.

1990 me and my brother Lennart raced together in the Formula 3 class with a two boat team we named The Champ's.
The cost was reasonable and the support from OMC was very good.
This is Lennarts #21 Burgess/Remonten/Evinrude F3 boat from 1990 below and our race truck.

http://www.screamandfly.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=393868&d=1512440472

Yes our dealership purchased the OMC F3 engines and parts and labor was very reasonable.
Of course we paid for our racing stuff 2US70 and sometimes recovered most of it from sponsorship.
In the F3 class it was possible to do so but no way in the Mercury 2 liter class.
We spent a ton of money to try to keep the Merc 2 liter engine alive 1991 but with out success.

The W-150 class (cats) with EPA approved production engines like the Evinrude E-TEC 150 H.O. runs close to 80 MPH. Driver and co-pilot and fuel for around one hour.

what can you tell us about why some ccc/rs engines came with short propshaft & others came with long propshaft?

I can only answer this way,
The Evinrude/Johnson V6 CCC/RS was introduced 1976 as a 2.448 liter cross-flow.
The same mid section/gearcase was also used for the 2 liter looper, 2.6 liter cross-flow and the 3 liter looper with fuel injection.
Some mid sections/gear cases was modified by OMC during the years depending on the powerhead.
Don't remember the prop. shaft being a problem but could have been changed for reasons I don't know about.
Thanks for asking.

RogerH

Jim, I have wondered the same thing. I now have had two of the long hub CCC/RS gearcases that will take the long hub Mercury props that had more pitch than OMC props. The spline is about 3/4" longer on this prop shaft. The spline angle is just a bit different I
believe, as a Mercury spline washer won't fit the OMC...or maybe it was the other way around ???
Anybody out there that can address the long propshaft "mystery"? Jim Nerstrum?

OMC updated racing parts to the better all the time and pretty sure its the same thing with this prop. shaft.
The 3 liter looper, with fuel injection was way more powerful than the first cross-flow 2.448 liter CCC/RS. Still using the same name on the cowling.

1975 I drove our #53 SE class Clerici/Evinrude Hustler to victory in Rouen 24 Hours. Here is the full story

Our SE class Victory in the Rouen 24 hours 1975

This was my first race as an Evinrude factory driver for OMC 1975
The racing season in Europe normally starts with the Rouen 24 Hours, but I was invited to South Africa earlier 1975 and drove the famous BP 200..(PB 200 story here)..http://svera.se/blogg/racing-historier/1975-2/
I was not crazy about being part of the Rouen race but it was part of my contract with OMC
I flew to OMC in Belgium a week before the race to help out rigging the boat.
Important for me to have power trim buttons and some other things my way.
The rules said three drivers per boat and OMC recommended using two OMC test drivers who where my size.
Two SE class Clerici boats was prepared at the OMC factory. One for me and one for Roger Jenkins.
Roger was a fun man to hang out with..strong personality and Roger was in racing to win..but so was I.
We installed head lights and other “funny things” on the boat. Racing non stop for 24 hours means driving at night in the darkness and the commercial barge traffic
was in business 24/7.

When we got there, it was a lot of boats and most of them were thick fiberglass cats run by local French people.
The next surprise was that the race was run clockwise
around the island!!!!
I was not used to right hand turns but raced and won the 2-hour of Duvnäsviken, Sweden the year before.. that was my only experience with right turns in boat racing.
As usual in France were all info in French only, and I understood nothing of what was said at the driver’s meeting, which lasted over an hour.
Paul Kalb..the new racing boss for Europe did not understand anything either but told me that I was responsible for the entire race planning.
Paul wanted me to start the race and hopefully drive the last hours to finish the race.

My plan was 2-hour shifts because lots of incidents happen in the pit.
The Clerici boat turned poorly when heavy but to many stops with 1.5 hour shifts.
We were out testing a number of times at practice..the waves from the commercial barge traffic was bad bad..but one side of the island the water was little bit smoother.
Well remember that famous Leif “Honken” Holmqvist of Sweden drove a V-bottom boat in the SD class and he came and asked me about the crazy water conditions.
His Volvo Penta powered V-bottom behaved strangely on the rough side of the island.
The start was sometime during the middle of the day and lots of boats took off at the same time. I got a great start and was one of the lead boats but on the other side of the island..all the heavy fiberglass cats came flying by in the extremely rough water.
Wow, I needed to slow down and save the equipment for the last hour instead of try to lead in the beginning of the race. Next thing in my head was..I am pretty stupid to be part of this 24 hour race.
Time for cruise control, we refueled and changed drivers a few times in daylight before it got dark, cold and rainy…!!
One of my shifts in the middle of the night went well .. but the next one like 4 a clock in the morning began with a flying experience from a big wave that I could not see on the back of the island.
I landed on top of one another race boat..the driver of that boat was OK but his boat sank..
that was good for me because I could get back to the pit .. where we took the boat out of the water..
Repaired the damage and replaced the gearcase/ propeller and then we went back on the water to race further into the darkness…!!
At dawn we were a few laps behind Jenkins and the other SE class leaders.
Jenkins now disappeared from the race..his time for trouble and had to spend sometime on the trailer for repair.
Now there was a chance for us to win, so I drove like a mad man for the last hours of the race.
A Rouen 24 Hours SE class victory was now reality..extremely fun and a perfect start as a factory pilot for Evinrude.
After the race we return to the OMC Bruges to rig a new Burgess boat for the OE/Formula 3 World Championship race in Aix-les-Bains also France.

HeeHee no but I think I have the story somewhere.

I got all the info from Ted Zahorski (https://www.facebook.com/tzahorski?hc_ref=ARQ1eBFbBnyl_vGkH3vR52ESVYO8pbRyY4TKsKBzgtWzCY2Qy021CFszA-ufxQV22vs&fref=nf)
He was part of the Yamaha team developing racing V-6 powerheads, midsections and gearcases.
Ron Anderson also told me the same thing at an Old Farts Meeting in Naples a few years ago.
Yamaha copied a Merc racing gearcase but run in to some gear problems after a few hours running them.

http://www.screamandfly.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=394207&d=1512922657

I'm not buying this gearcase story for 1 minute..........have been hearing this gearcase rumor for 25 years. Show me actual pictures of their pattern and core foundry tooling and an actual rough sand casting and then I'll believe it.

Even the perfect Evinrude 75 Hustler breaks down sometimes. This is me trying to lift the engine cowling on the way back to the pit. (been towed) I was lucky, it was the gearcase, (not powerhead) changed the gearcase during the heat break and got back racing.

Pretty sure that's a Wayne Taylor mid.
Same as the latest OMC F-1 effort.

My old friend Ray Neudecker told me he built some powerhead for the Worthy funded effort.

I remember the Yammi F-1 effort.
From what I saw they were impressive and loved seeing the added competition.
I hate a single brand class.

They probably are OMC gear cases. They stole everything else from OMC.
I remember patent law suit stories during their orig O/B launch.
Rumor was there 3 banger and V-6 heads would bolt right up to an OMC.

Remember too, in the auto industry the Japanese are notorious for copying our ideas/designs then mastering the mass production of them.
When I was in the biz there were stories of them getting tours of competitors plants and one of them was always quiet and to himself but was an engineer with a photographic memory.

One hundred percent Yamaha built V-6 race engines. (Powerhead, mid section and gearcase)

Unprecedented demand causes Yamaha to delay engine shipments.

In light of “unprecedented demand,” Yamaha Motor Corp. is asking its counterparts in Japan to focus on reallocating products to the United States so the company can fill orders.
Specifically, Yamaha said that due to “a perfect storm of challenges” it is unable to meet demand for the 2.8-liter, 4.2-liter V6 and 5.3-liter V8 outboards — as well as some Yamaha rigging items — in the time frame the company had originally hoped, in part because its manufacturing operations were in transition.
“It is unprecedented demand, and we simply cannot meet the demands for shipping our product,” Martin Peters, Yamaha Marine Group communications and government relations senior manager, told Trade Only Today. “We are doing our best.”
Yamaha Marine Group president Ben Speciale sent letters to dealers and OEMs acknowledging it was unable to meet its target ship dates and apologizing for delays.
“We are experiencing the perfect storm of challenges for supplying outboards at this higher demand,” said the letter to dealers, which Peters sent to Trade Only. “The marketplace has many years of pent-up demand for larger boats and the outboard motors that power them. As the economy and mood have improved this year, demand for our premium products increased more than we had anticipated.
“This increase in demand has occurred while our manufacturing operations are in transition. The transition was designed to accommodate new products and increased longer-term demand.”
Understanding that its availability to promise dates is “less than stable,” Yamaha is bringing down target ship dates to regain stability. “We will do everything we can to bring the system back up by Dec. 15,” Speciale wrote, adding in bold: “We will continue to ship product during this time.”

Paris Six Hours 1979… OMC overall win. Beats the Merc T-4 with a 3 liter V-6
Paris 6 Hours 1979.
More OMC victories over the Merc T4.

This was the largest factory battle of the year.
Three boats rigged with the big bore V6 -T4 from Team Mercury.
OMC used their 3 liter V6 looper fuel injection and the result couldent get any better.
Cees van der Velden/Tom Posey won in the #4 Velden/Johnson RS 3 liter.. leading 181 laps of the 185 he won with.
Second was Renato Molinari/Barry Woods in the #3 Molinari/Evinrude CCC 3 liter 184 laps.
No Merc T4 finished the race.
How do I know this:
I was there racing the OE/F3 class and finished third with our Sjoberg/Evinrude CC

A dangerous combination for tunnel boats and the rules was changed to standard powerheads max 3 liter installed on racing mid sections/gearcases.
That would be a good class for today could do stock and unlimited powerheads even emission ones, something for everyone
Did you hear news, ski racing in OZ has been limited to 120mph...

Did the 3000 mean 3.0 ltr?

Paris 1988 and you can see the F3000 cats with 20 inch production mid sections/gearcases.

First I like to say a big THANK YOU to everybody clicking in to this thread I started exactly 6 month ago today.
100 pages and close to 100,000 clicks.
Again thank you very much and please come back as much as possible.

Here is a few more F3000 pictures from 1988 & 1989 with stock Evinrude/Johnson V6 3 liter, looper power.
The 20 inch shaft with standard gearcases made the tunnel boats hard to control.
UIM changed the rules to production max 3 liter powerheads installed on racing mid sections.

Thanks STEVERINO, you are very good at this. This picture is from Bristol 1972 and it looks like the same boat as in Sweden.
I guess James Beard also won Chasewater with this boat.

1972 was my first year for International racing but I only went to the Berlin 6 hours and it was rainy and extremely cold in West-Berlin.

Lars,

I was also at Berlin but don't recall the race. Was it cancelled due to the weather?

Well..not 100% sure but I remember some Swedish friends raced in the smaller classes. (SB class)
Very "ruff water" and the weather was terrible (strong wind, heavy rain and mist all day. We found better things to do than standing in the pit holding on and get wet..:)
Here is the racing program with drivers for the Berlin 6 Hour race 1972.
