Wow @Rotary John (https://www.screamandfly.com/member.php?u=48164),
Very sad story about Ted Wright. I probably met him in Paris 1974.
Still remember how upset everybody in the OMC team was when Scotti died in the tragic accident.
I have pictures of Scotti laying stuck in the fence at the seawall and his boat floating upside down next to him I
Terrible pictures I refuse to use.
(Got it from a French friend)
How did veteran drivers like Scotti, Percival and Velden end up on seawalls anyway? Sounds like they made risky choices for racing lines. I never liked racing under bridges, near seawalls or dams.

Ah yes, now I remember the seawall danger. The safety debate in APBA raged on for the next 2 years whether the crew chief of each race boat entry should have a remotely radio controlled engine kill switch. Safety cockpits were NEVER designed or built for direct impact to a bulkhead or seawall. Safety issues like this incident was the beginning of the end for series OPC racing in the USA.

Very dangerous moment for the people in the safety boat at the blind corner. Bad accident there in the 70's killed two people in a safety boat.

The UIM motor tech specs do NOT represent current racing specs made by any manufacturer. They are custom built one-offs made by the race teams. Merit Stromeroy is the only participant trying to make use of the new Mercury APX V8 race unit. I have no idea where these teams are getting their parts from but it is NOT from Mercury Racing. Hence, the black paint and "Merc" are missing.

Jonas Andersson is from the small town Frövi, Sweden and are now a three time UIM F1 World Champion. He is very unique because Jonas is the only "self employed" winning driver with a minimum racing budget.
In his little shop in Sweden he preparers his own Merc 2.5 liter V6 and design his own boats with help from the Danish boat builder Molgaard.
To beat the multi million dollar Middle Eastern teams with hired drivers makes his success even greater.
Congratulations Jonas to your third World Title.

Brucato sold the spacers as an accessory to his system but I never understood what they were for? Compliments to Andersson for doing the R&D to make them work. Earlier comment about the "little guy"...........some teams have deep pockets and simply write the checks to pay for the results. You can accomplish anything you want if you throw enough money at it.

Christmas 1954 – A Year To Celebrate
1954 had been a banner year with Johnson building outboards 24-hours a day in three shifts. Two milestone motors were at the heart of this consumer excitement: the revolutionary “quiet” Sea-Horse 5½ hp, which would outsell every other model of outboard made in a single year in industry history to that date, and the new electric start Sea-Horse 25.

My dads first real pleasure boat was a 18’ plywood cuddy w/twin 25 hp E-Rudes.
I was very young at the time but clearly remember one being pull start (a ‘53) and one being electric start (a ‘54)!
As luck would have it, he only had trouble w/one starting and it was the rope start!
They we’re tough enough to pull (Ive owned a couple) start that if it didn’t start on the first or second pull, you were in trouble!
One weekend my brother (10 yrs older than me) brought one of his high school buddies, who was a body builder.
When that motor didn’t want to start, my brother and dad were excited to turn the body builder loose on the starter rope.
He broke the starter rope on the first pull!
I remember on mine, I kept in perfect tune and told my skiing partner if it didn’t start on the 2nd or 3rd pull you were doing something wrong!
That was at the end of the rope start era and would have people approach me at the ramp to tell me they knew I wished I had an electric start.
Id smile, not say a word, pump the pressure tank a couple more times and start it on the first pull

Alex Hledin cooked up a giant 3 butterfly 2.5 inlet that at WOT literally opened up the entire reed gallery of the engine. It made Brucato's rig look like a coffee straw. It was great for quick reed cage inspection............just mash down on the throttle. I don't know if Hledlin's stuff ever made it on OMC engines but Wayne Taylor's MAD EFI equipment sure did and Velden was a customer.

There were two people in South Carolina back in the day that could build and modify OMC race engines that would match anything OMC could put out. D.F. Jenkins cross flow V-4's were legendary for being giant slayers. Earl Bentz early success was powered by Jenkins engines. Also, Dan 'Pop' Piggott was another engine wizard who built some wicked fast OMC 3 cylinder engines. 'Pop' was charging $1500.00 in 1982 for his 3 cylinder powerhead modification service. You supplied the powerhead.

Merry Skee-Horse Christmas
By the early 1960’s OMC was highly diversified. Its varied divisions were building: diving compressors, tent campers, snow blowers, all-terrain vehicles, golf & commercial carts, turf equipment, chain saws and boats. In 1964, they added snowmobiles to this diverse list.
OMC’s Sled Ride – OMC made three brands of snowmobiles, OMC Snow Cruiser (Canada), Evinrude Skeeter & Johnson Skee Horse (US), which were introduced in winter of 1965. OMC was the first manufacturer to use a 2-stroke engine with opposing twin-cylinders in their sleds. It had a neutral gear for ease of starting, not common for the 1960's. The sleds weighed 369 lb, which was 100 lb more than most other snowmobiles at the time and had a hard time in deep snow due to the weight. They could reach a speed of 30 mph, and were reliable in all situations, uncommon in the 1960's - except for deep snow. Over time, through constant improvement the sleds became considerably more sophisticated and provided better performance.
1968 Christmas Ad – As mentioned in the ad below, several upgrades were made for the 1968 models including more horsepower.

I never heard exactly what the secrets of Jenkins V-4's were. There were rumors that he figured out how to cut slots into the sleeves, designing his own type of finger porting on these engines which would have been some trick on a cross flow. As far as Mr. Piggott's 3 cylinder mods, I heard he cut additional power ports in the sleeves and pistons as well as coming up with port timing figure that worked really well for sprint racing. Pop would never talk about what he knew. If you wanted to know what he did you had to pay the money for his work.

As I have said before..............you can accomplish anything you want if you throw money at it. I'm surprised that Jenkins and Piggott's work were not reverse engineered into other OMC engines. OMC probably knew about it but their modifications were not cost effective for model production.

Christmas 1936 – “Consolidated Competition” is Born at OMC
On September 30, 1936 Johnson was formally consolidated with OMC. A new corporate policy was established that would create a unique competitive environment throughout the organization for nearly two decades. “Consolidated Competition” as it was known, allowed Evinrude-Elto and Johnson to continue to build their own outboards and compete virtually undisturbed, as they had before consolidation. They would continue to compete head-to-head as if the parent OMC company did not exist.
Generally Friendly Competition - Often, this policy of internal rivalry spilled over into areas of engineering and production. As Fortune Magazine pointed out in its August 1938 issue, “Chief Engineer Irgens of Evinrude and Chief Engineer Rayniak of Johnson get together once a week. If one of them has made some significant advancement he will tell the other....but mostly Irgens is trying to outsmart Rayniak, and vice versa.”
The Rivalry Doesn't End - While the two brands began sharing the common outboards in 1951 - and eventually all motors became the same design - the spirit of head-to-head competition continued well into the 1980's.

The St Louis raced first at the gravel pits in Fenton, MO then later at Creve Ceour were Billy Seebold’s races sponsored by The Lions Club where Billy was a member. An officer of the Lions Club, whose name I don’t recall, very active in the races wanted to own & campaign a boat in the races. He didn’t want to start in the F1 class so Billy hooked him up with a Mod 50 rig, built him a boat & recommended a local driver whose name I also don’t recall. Very successful rig, competitive with Butch Brown sponsored by Evinrude/Tom Ireland & Jimbo when he didn’t participate

Look close at the lower unit. The water inlets are visible. I remember going to a race when I was about 18 and seeing an E class V bottom with the propshaft even with the pad. I asked the guy how it could pump water at speed. His reply..."I don't know it just does".

My experience with cooling water for the 75HP Evinrude.
Long story..
European Champion for the third consecutive year 1975
After the Nordic Championship race in Forsaa, Finland and my enormous success in the SE class the
past 3 years winning over 50 races rumors was circulating that I had a special engine from OMC.
Well, I DID NOT and the engine I used on my own Clerici SE boat 1975 was a stock short leg 75 Hp Evinrude from my inventory at my dealership.
A legal higher compression cylinder head was the only change, and the race power trim and stiff rubber mount.
I can tell the truth now, and the speed advantage was from the boat and the set up and my driving style.
The way to get the better top speed was to raise the engine up much higher than normal race set up.
The stock gear case was like a brake, and I was 2-3″ above everybody else, BUT that made it very difficult to drive/handle the boat.
The prop lost the grip, and the engine lost the cooling water but the trick was to just before the prop lost the grip to use power trim and throttle/steering to avoid that to happen.
I tested for many days and weeks how far you could drive before the engine started to
overheat and that was around 900 meters.
I lost many powerheads before I found out a way to back of just a little to pick up enough water to cool the engine on the straight a way before the turn.
On top of that you have to use the power trim in and out in a special way to make the “air bag” under the tunnel to lift the boat and I have to say that was my best
advantage.
The European Championship race this year was in Sabaudia Italy.
(Remember..in the UIM SE class this was the biggest most important race you could win. UIM did not have a World Championship title in the SE class in the seventies).
I called friends in Italy to find out about this new place for the race and was told that it is in a Lagoon, shallow water and flat water.
That was for me great news, and I worked on raising the engine even higher on the transom and picked up a few more MPH.
Stockholm GP was the weekend before the big one in Italy. I used the Stockholm GP race as a test.
Bad news..I screwed up.. hooked and rolled..but did not hurt myself.
There was plenty of damage the my #1 Clerici boat, a few days after I told Paul Kalb that I preferred
to race my own boat instead of the factory SE boat.
I got help from a local boat builder to repair my boat just in time to make it to Italy.
Did use spray can paint to the repaired wood on the boat at different rest areas on the Autobahn.
Normally I was hiding everything I was doing, (learned from Molinari) but for this big important race I changed that.
Parked the boat in the pit so everybody could see my set up and prop.
I told the Race officials that I want my engine inspected before the
race to put an end to “the special engine”rumor.
They said No, but told me that my engine is going to be inspected very seriously after the race if I was the winner.
I have never felt so ready to win a race and now all the good things started to happen.
Around 35 boats was at the race, and most drivers looked at my race set up and started to raise up there engines higher. That was my plan…
Mercury had maybe 10 drivers using the 650 XS.
4 heat, 3 counts and clock start and I was pretty good at them and took the start and turned first.
Then just pulled away on the long two turn race course.
Many drivers was hooking left and right, because they could not
drive with the engine that high.
This race was for me a perfect one. I won 3 heat in a row and did not race the last one.
I asked the officials to start taking my engine apart and they did.
The power head, mid section even the gear case to check gears and impeller and everybody could now see it was a stock 75 hp Evinrude.
Never worked on the ports or pistons.
Just standard.
Lots of disappointed people when my engine was cleared, but
Lars was happy and the European Champion for the third consecutive year.

You were fortunate to have a dealership at the time. Burning through "many powerheads" was not an option for most of us at the time. In 1973 at OPC Nationals I saw a guy running an SJ tunnel boat go through 3 99in Mercury powerheads right off the factory support truck in testing. His Dad was quite well off and could afford the cost.

The "sport classes" were supposed to be powered by "stock" engines available thru any dealer. What was a factory support truck doing with "stock" powerheads in the first place"?! Sport classes were intended to prevent racers with deep pockets from dominating? One of the most powerful rules we had to prevent this kind of behavior was the "engine claimer" rule. Loosing racers had the option of "claiming" the winner's engine if the winner appeared to be dominating the race events.

This is an excellent example where determination in testing and evaluating the results paid off. Other racers simply don't put forth this kind of effort and then bitch that you were cheating with a "special" engine. I wanted to experiment with exhaust tuners and was willing to give up my race heat points in advance and use the race as a test session and one guy still bitched. That's the point where I started to leave my outfit parked in the driveway.

Well..not in Europe..
The UIM SE class was by far the largest racing class in the seventies. Some races could have 40 SE boats at the races.
One reason was OMC and distributors in most country's supported the class with low price new engines and parts.
1975 I was hired by OMC for a few races. I won Rouen 24 hours in a factory owned boat but also won SE races with my own boat and engines from my dealership.

My first F1-OZ class race at Idroscalo, Italy in September 1978.

Barry Woods showed up for a club race on the Willamette River in Portland OR once with his CCC powered Molinari to "test". He made all the local racers running Merc V6s look like they were crawling along. He took the entire river width bank to bank just to scrub off the speed from straight aways. At the time (1977) it was the fastest OMC tunnel I had ever seen until the V8s showed up nearly 10 years later.

I don’t recall that application as the golf car business was shut down & law suits started for “dumping” by a a competitor who was selling less then our manufactured costs. Then we shut down OMC Lincoln as Pioneer was sold & we again de-centralized. I did put together the Combo II GT golf car program. If I recall John, that there might have been a program to put the rotary in a Truckster. I believe by then the rotary was already in the snowmobile. Lawn Boy management moved back to Galesburg in the early 80’s. But , as I said, Cushman golf was no longer an entity by then.

Cushman was using a 12HP B&S engine that put out around 9HP. They asked for a 15HP rotary. I detuned a S/N engine to an honest 15 HP. I was told the acceleration was beyond exhilarating, it was downright frightening. It would pick the front wheels off the ground if you nailed it. Anyway, Briggs didn't want to spend the money to develop a new engine and as you said, Cushman golf carts were on the way out.
Better get back to boats before Lars chimes in.

Had a Cushman motor scooter my first year in college. Used it to deliver papers in Tallahassee Florida so I could afford to stay in college. Two speed stick shift springs on the seat big fat tires and would probably run about 45 mph. Canvas saddlebags That could hold about 60 papers. I also witnessed my first snow in Tallahassee and the winter of 6768. Wanted to go home to Miami and quit school, but the thought of possibly being drafted and going to Vietnam made me maintain my low C average.

Yup that was me. The boat was painted up Lawn Boy colors & called “Lawn-Boy Superstarter” for a distributor meeting at Lake Tahoe. I had to make several passes by the pavilion dock where they were having outside coffee after breakfast. Lake Tahoe is on a bowl, so when I saw them waving for me to start up the noise echoed all around the lake. One thing that I forgot about was the elevation & attempting to plane as I had our normal club gear case prop on the motor. I had to walk the Jack Leek designed sprint boat built by McDonald up over my wake & finally got her going. At the time I lived in Winter Haven, FL doing some OMC special project. The race was at Lake Hollingsworth, in Lakeland. Jeff Titus beat me with his 16’ Scotti.

Its me and Renato Molinari in the two Saffa/Molinari OZ class boats.
Renato used #165 and Evinrude CCC V6 power. My #29 used a Johnson RS V6 racing outboard.
This was a race for me to get used to OZ class racing and prepare for the Paris 6 hour race in October 1978.

Well..I have heard and read some stuff about Cees doing business outside his racing business in the early seventies . Not sure what is correct or fake.
He left us long time ago and its not nice to speculate when we can never get his side of the story.
I have NEVER seen Cees doing anything of that.
Cees started his own racing boat factory 1975 and sold lots of brand new racing boats around the world. For the UIM SE, OE, ON and OZ class. Also a few inboard Veldens.
He also leased ready to race racing boats and traded in used boats and sold.
Cees was also selling OMC racing engines and parts. Rigged new boats for customers.
When I say tough..I mean he told you a price and you could never beat him up on his price. Take it or leave it.
I really liked Cees Van Der Velden.
He did a lot to promote racing in Europe.

Cees was peddling diamonds in the early 1970s. He tried to sell some to my parents. I do not recall the exact location (maybe Como, Italy, or at a race site). Cees opened the palm of his hand and had about a dozen diamonds in his hand. He asked if I wanted some, I was not into the market and declined the sales proposition.
Regarding cigarettes, a twin outboard engine boat one time motored up to the dock at the Como shop. I was told later that; the boat crew was smuggling cigarette cartons from Switzerland into Italy via boat. Lake Como northern end reaches into Switzerland.
Here is Cees and me (on the other side of the cafe from Cees). We were at Palileo's restaurant on the other side of Lake Como, from Renato's waterfront shop.

Those out-stretched arms in the cockpit, in racing, were the old style in Formula One cars and NASCAR.
That changed later with Darrell Waltrip in NASCAR, and probably at the end of Jackie Stewart's F1 career, where guys had the steering wheel closer to the chest for better leverage in turning.
Cees makes my arms get tired, thinking about a marathon race with arms stretched out for so long on the racecourse.

Raised at Lake Hollingsworth back in the early 70s myself. Add an orange Molinary with a blue striped twister raced against a felon named Dick Hunt, who was running a 16 foot Al Martin sprint boat with the blues strike twister on it and what was then UJ class. Help Dick set a record for the class at the time couldn’t quite catch him. If you finished second to Jeff Titus, you were doing good because he was one tough customer on the racecourse ranks right up there with any drivers from South Florida, including Jim Hunt, and several others homer Green included. UIM OE was basically the same as what we in North America called MOD 50, at least that is what we called it here in Canada from about 1975 until it kind of became SST 60.
Lars can tell you more about the variuos OMC models in OE, the Merc MOD 50 models were the 650X then the 700X. In Canada we were allowed to use the Merc 650XS in our SE class.

I remember the 650XS but it didn't have a mid section like in the photo above. Even with a radical mid section on the Merc it still got clobbered by OMC products in Mod 50. Mod 50 was clearly OMC turf and always has been.

Here is the story from the SE class race in Sabaudia I got some time ago from an Italian friend. Not sure what it says but google could maybe fix that..
I know I won the race and a lot of crazy stuff happened after the race..I asked a great looking Italian girl for a dinner date..We did have fun and a great time...but her brothers did not like this blond Swede..!!..:):smiletest::cheers:

Franco Clerici did built excellent UIM SD and SE boats in his little shop at his house in Formigara, Italy.
I visited his place many times. Even invited to his daughters wedding one year.

That's easy............too many established boat builders over here. Trans ocean shipping expenses.
Molinaris that showed up here were well used and nearly worn out. Burgess hulls that showed up were John Hill castaways. What few Scottis that showed up were governed by an iron hand of Barry Woods
Veldens were extremely rare too. I watched Velden saw up a nearly new V8 hull in Sacramento CA 1985 to salvage the capsule and hardware rather than shipping it back to Europe. Made me sick to watch.
OMC and Mercury teams never really cared about the boats after they were used up. I always thought we paid waaay too much money for their hand-me-downs.
Even Dieter Schultze showed up for Havasu the first time with a "kit" he shipped from Europe and finished the hull and engine rigging over here.

When I first encountered the 3 cyl OMC E motors they had a big electric shift lower unit. I was running a 44in Mercury which had been the default E motor for quite some time. When did OMC change that gearcase? It seemed to me that the the lower unit was big handicap on the original 49in OMC motors.

OMC made a special engine for the UIM SE class 1973. This engine did not have electric shift and a smaller gearcase.

It's not only the gearcase but the entire mid section and clamp bracket for an X/GT 115. I guess OMC got around the UIM rules because enough X/GTs had been made to qualify the 65SS as a hybrid? I wonder how OMC adapted the engine block foot prints?

Correct..the 1973 Evinrude/Johnson 65SS was a very special race engine for the UIM SE class.
OMC put lots of effort in to this..even a separat UIM homolagation. It was 100% legal in the UIM SE class.
You can see a few more things on my transom of the #99 Clerici. The Johnson picture you can see the shift level on the mid section. (Dieter Schulzes boat in Paris 1973)
OMC mainly did this to beat the Carniti 65 HP..this Carniti was superior for a couple of years in the UIM SE class.

The 1966 Orange Bowl Regatta 9 Hour race single engine outboard class was won by an Evinrude V4. That motor had a lower unit that looked a lot like yours. I think it might have been a prototype and they were not sure it could go the distance so they strapped a spare in the boat with tools to change it.

If you look closely you can see that May was one of the USA racers lucky enough to acquire a Scotti hull. Ted ran that package for many years at Havasu. Ran his own race and didn't try to beat the factory rides. He made sure he started and was on the course and running when the end of the race was declared. His pit stops for fuel were not frantic. Pull in to his trailer, refuel and have aa sandwich and something to drink, etc then back out again .

Bristol was a great facility to watch a F1 boat race.
However, Bill Seebold said publicly that it was one of (if not the most) dangerous venues to race at.
Roger Jenkins, also, said publicly that F1 race boats became too fast to be running at Bristol.
Having said that, the last time I saw Mr. Bill, in 2019 at Tavares, he proudly showed me on his cell phone his trophies.
One trophy display cabinet was Bristol Only.
All the other trophies including St. Louis were displayed in another cabinet.
To me this illustrated how much Bill valued winning at BRISTOL.

Any race course that had any kind of right hand sweep or dog leg was a challenge for drivers who were used to planting the boat and turning left. Some drivers would "jab" to the right (like turning left) and would scrub off their speed. I figured out how to use my knee to "lock" the steering wheel for a gentle arc, keep the speed up and pass these guys in the process. You had to be careful in a dogleg because this technique required the use of all racing lanes to make the sweeping arc. Just because a sea wall and RH turn are there doesn't mean you hug the shoreline? (Bristol) Any race event like Bristol, Paris, Pittsburgh, etc were great for spectators but a nightmare for drivers. The wakes would richocet off the sea walls and docks and make a choppy soup. If you could get on top off that mess and get over it was the trick. If you raced at any of these sites just finishing the event was an accomplishment in itself.

Beating the new SE Class Merc 650 XS was easy 1975…but a long story the first time..!!
The Scandinavian SE Championship 1975 took place in Forsaa, Finland.
Around 25 boats were in place at this beautiful Lake, and Mercury had just released the new 650 XS UIM SE race engine and lots of people was hoping the new Merc could give the OMC drivers a run for the money.
Driver Bo Nilson (6) was backed up by AGB, the Swedish distributor for Johnson and I by Huzells, the Swedish distributor for Evinrude. (1)
The strongest Finn was Mercury’s Bimbo Aminoff and a few more drivers from Denmark
and Norway with the new Merc.
The rest was using OMC 3 Cyl. 75 Hp. Four heat and three counts as normally and a clock start.
I did not know how strong the new Merc was, but I was very well prepared and after
the first heat the good news was that the new Merc was no match (sorry
Mercury) and the fight was as usually between Bo (6) and me (1) and some other OMC
drivers.
In the second heat Bimbo Aminoff took the lead but after a few laps I past him and so did Bo but I made a mistake in one turn and Bo past me
for the win.
Well, I do not remember exactly but it came down to the last
heat and the winner of that heat was the overall winner of the race and I was
the lucky one again with only to tens of a second over Bo Nilsson, and I was now
the Scandinavian Champion for the third consecutive year.
Well not yet, because third was Mercury’s Bimbo Aminoff and he filed a protest.
Bo and I did not have any spray paint on our gear cases.
You where allowed to sharpen the skeg, and sand on the gear case if you still was within the template.
We pass that test easy, but the Chief technical inspector said that you must spray paint the gear case, and ours was just polished aluminum
so he disqualified Bo and me.
Bimbo Aminoff was now declared the winner and Bo Nilsson went nuts.
I know how angry he can get, and it turned ugly. After a major argument we left for Sweden and straight to Roland Rosenholtz, the Swedish Power Boat Federations chairman to tell him the
story, but he was already informed.
Mr. Rosenholtz made a few phone calls to Finland and UIM.
“There was nothing in the UIM rule book saying the gearcase must be painted/or not painted”
After a few days I received the Trophy and the price money
from Finland and I was officially the Scandinavian Champion 1975.
Thank you Roland Rosenholtz

... Some drivers would "jab" to the right (like turning left) and would scrub off their speed. I figured out how to use my knee to "lock" the steering wheel for a gentle arc, keep the speed up and pass these guys in the process.
I raced the crazy Rouen 24 Hours 1975.

A common problem in both APBA and UIM. Race event inspectors interpreting technical rules that are NOT documented or illustrated in any form. By examining the documentation the protest shouldn't have been submitted in the first place? However I do not agree with the use of "templates" to overcome OEM variances nor gearcases that are not painted for "stock" classes. That's why motor technical committees should be made up from factory engineers only and no APBA / UIM race inspectors.

Only got DQd twice for tech issues. The first was in SG at Nationals but I will not elaborate since the families of the persons involved are still around. The second time was at my very last race. We ran a boat in G production at a race in Key West that was the first boat out of a new mold we had just built at Action Marine. The inspector decided that the boat was not a "Production" boat. Action went on to build quite a few of these boats. I was never DQd for one of my motors. I got torn down by the chief OPC inspector 4 times and passed every time.

Again, what did the rules say in writing regarding "production" boat? Number of units built and sold? I agree with the inspectors decision. I envy you in that you raced in SG! Dimensional inspections are acceptable. Inspections done with special tools and templates, etc are not.

We took it up there as a backup plan for our best hope. That was Roger Dixon in the "Rocket Man". I did most of the layup on that boat and it was the lightest 13' we ever built. Barney Schoenrock the owner of Action did most of the setup. Roger drove the race of his life and won the finals.

Historically significant Formula 1 V8 for sale.
Owned and raced by multiple world champion Cees Van Der Velden (The flying dutchman). His personal development boat with detachable sponsons.
Due to ill health, I am selling my dads beautiful man cave collection including this Velden world championship points winning race boat. The hull is Balsa, Kevlar and Ply and raced with Benson and Hedges livery, other sponsors were Olivetti, Longines Timing, Castrol, DHL and Champion.
Genuine engine is also extremely rare and to best of my knowledge there is probably less than 6 remaining in the world. 1987 OMC Formula 1 3.5 Litre V8 Fuel Injected 2 Stroke Outboard with 6” bubble back mid section, racing gear box, V8 props. This is as good and big as it ever got with current Formula 1 Limited to much smaller displacement engines.
This was Cees Van Der Velden personal boat with detachable sponsons, electric hydraulic power steering with nitrogen assist, 125 Litre Fuel tank, Hydraulic up down in and out, Porsche 944 fuel pump system, custom tandem enclosed trailer all rebuilt / restored to original condition.
For the guy that has everything.

Today I asked Carina to try on the race sweater I got from Christer Rosenholtz

This is the F1-V8 Gold Team/Benson & Hedges run by Cees Van Der Velden 1984/85.
The race program is from the F1-V8 race in Paris 1984.
I raced in the International Travel Card team with Tom Percival there.
I think Carina makes the Gold Team look good..!!..
EDIT:
I maybe need to explain this a little bit better.. I got the Gold Team/Benson&Hedges sweater from Christer Rosenholtz at the Miami Boat Show last week.
He came from Sweden to visit..
Christer´s father Roland was the Officer of the Day at the Stockholm F1-V8 GP
1983 and 1984.
Also the President of the Swedish Power Boat Federation back then.
Cees Van Der Velden gave Roland the sweater at the race 29 years ago.

1989 was a weird year for F1 with a mix of Merc V6 and OMC V8 power. The OMC V8 program in Europe and USA had its best years in 1985 to 1988 with Strand deciding to pull OMC sponsorship sometime in the late 80s. Mercury would continue with their IOGP program until about 1993 but was not allowed to use the F1 title (Champ instead). Mercury would continue to pursue the OMC V8 guys with their high winding 2 litre engines going thru piles of pistons in the process. The title of F1 in the USA struggled for years to come while F1 had a more stable climate in Europe (UIM). F1 continues today in Europe but is seldom seen in the USA. Take notice that Woods, Molinari, Wik and Sanders, Posey and Seebold are not in the listing.

The only time I ever saw Bob Nordskog drive was at the 1966 Orange Bowl Regatta. I was in a single engine outboard boat in the 9 Hour and he passed us like every other lap. The "Viking Spirit" was a beautiful inboard marathon boat and it ran perfectly all day. Nordskog's posture in the boat was very distinctive so you could see it was just him all day long.

In later yrs he was building his helmets too and they were tiny compared to standard, so could see that too.
Did it to reduce bucketing in the case of a sudden, high speed swim but the APBA fought him in it because it was not Snell approved.
I was a fan.

Not sure about the USA, but here in Canada OMC had a yellow 'Wing' that I know both Dave Norton and Spencer Dunn drove...although at the National Championships in 1971 Spencer spun out in the 1st corner and Andre Savard went right over top. Good thing Spencer (who was not very tall) was deep in the cockpit as one of Savard's engines went directly over top of Spencer.

In the 2nd photo it is interesting to note the OMC clamp bracket. It allowed for relatively easy vertical adjustment where Mercs never did. Also the tilt pin axis is inline with the transom surface plane where Mercs were always fowward. I never saw any OMC powered OPC tunnels porpoise much where my Merc tunnels had a gallop. Connection?

Had that poster on my wall. Pretty sure I still have it rolled up with the rest of my old posters...
