Per this 1973 article the OMC V6 debuted in Europe at the Paris 6 Hour race.

The Johnson V6 Stinger GP was raced for the first time in Paris 6 hours 1973 and won the race.

A very cool Evinrude 31.8 (521cc) race engine built by a good friend of mine. (based on a production 20-35HP block)
This one of a kind is by far the most powerful OMC/Evinrude 31.8 (521cc) engine built.

Some info from the engine builder...

The side carb fed twin piston ports machined into the block from the inside. No reeds and no flow restriction with the side carb. The front 2-barrel carb provided the initial mixture feed, with progressive linkage opening the side piston-port carb at ~ 1/2 throttle. At WOT, all 3 barrels were full open. That way, it provided good bottom-end punch and great top end performance.

Here is some more info @mrpenguin (https://www.screamandfly.com/member.php?u=43989)

The meanest, baddest, fastest and most loved F1-V8 race outboard ever built. 35 years later it is still the fastest outboard the world have ever seen..!!

The first UIM F1-V8 race for the most powerful racing outboard in the history of outboard racing was in Brodenbach, Germany 1981.

December 22.. twenty years ago is a very sad anniversary.

I remember standing on my Alice Street waterfront lot in Stuart, Florida that day and my neighbor came and told me..
Lars.."your company filed for bankruptcy today"..!!
George Soros was again successfully destroying another great company.
All the OMC employees/dealers got a terrible Christmas gift.
The CEO David Jones left Outboard Marine in August.
Roger Fix was named CEO but he did not get a chance to fix anything.
Long time OMC loyal employers not only lost the job..but also pension etc.
Dealers was stuck with new inventory and much more.
Still hard to understand how this could happen..(please, don't bring up the Ficht)..the OMC problems started way before the Ficht.
For me Evinrude/Johnson outboards is by OMC..
(BRP just extended the OMC bankruptcy pain another 20 years)
Yes the Fact is..our favorite outboard made by OMC is no more.
I can live with that..because so many great years-memories with Evinrude/Johnson..(by OMC)

Don Henrich and I were there and Don had some props he wanted tested. I was standing on the hill watching the test when Kenny's prop threw a blade. The blade flew inches over my head, by the time I realized what had happened I was shaking thinking that could have easily hit me in the head. I walked over and picked up the part and noticed quite a bit of porosity in the casting. I still have that blade along with the rest of the prop. I had always planned to mount them as a wall hanging reminder of how lucky I was that day. We installed another prop and continued our testing without any problems.
Great times, great friends.

Well..1978 I was asked by OMC Sweden to also race the SD class..(Mostly a Volvo Penta outboard class.)
Delecato was my sponsor and Einar the owner of Delicato Bakery spent a lot of money painting my boats in his colors.
The first race of the year was Stockholm GP 1978..a marathon race I think 2 hours.
Lots of SE and OE class boats also..after 2 hours I was leading..all the faster SE & OE class boats broke down.
Sometimes luck is great in racing. I got the overall win..but the new Mariner 60 (also allowed in the SD class) was to strong for the next race and I cancelled my SD class racing for the rest of the season.

We tried/modified everything on the 1978 Evinrude 55 HP..
The purpose built Clerici cat was very good but we could not find enough top speed to compete with the better Mariner 60. If I remember right in the 65 MPH area. (a very good day)

HeeHee..I remember testing the 1978 UIM SD class Evinrude 55HP in the test tank at my dealership after installing different pistons/cylinder heads for the fifth time or so..
We where close to give up at this engine because nothing we did made it better.
Running wide open with the test wheel on in the tank only hanging on the stern bracket lips....(works great normally)
The engine did a hick up..came loose and ended up at the bottom of the test tank..
A few days later we gave up on the SD class racing..

Must have been really interesting to see each camp did for testing on the lake, especially when Molinari was partnered with Mercury. I get the impression that Molinari's facility was more "industrial" than Scotti's. Scotti's looks more like a conventional lakeshore marina?

Yes..this was before the pickle fork design..Scotti was doing a lot of "wing experiment".

Wow - aside from the OMC V8 circuits I've never seen photos of a race where OMC colors were the majority of the field. Only 2 Mercs?

As far as wings go (fixed and movable) I believe that Hodges and Molinari were the only ones who experimented with them. Merc stayed away from wings. With power trim and a running surface that constantly changed and the addition wind into the mix, that's a lot going on there at once for the driver's mind to manage. Only way to get wings to really work would be computer software to constantly manage the variables. Computers per se' really wouldn't happen for another 20 years yet, let alone sensors on a boat which could read the variables. Shoot, joystick steering in today's boating market is just now getting started.

It was before my time but he experimented w/canard winds in a similar location to the Scotti’s.

He said he could adjust them to fly the back of the boat and run a lap w/only the gear case in the water!

Couple of interesting tid bits

1. It takes power to create lift and the boat was actually slower w/the rear wings.

2. The APBA banned them. (May have been UIM)
The rules said “no aerodynamic lifting devices permitted”.

He laughed when telling me this as, a hydroplane only functions due to aerodynamic lift.
So they would have to ban them in entirety.

Wow - aside from the OMC V8 circuits I've never seen photos of a race where OMC colors were the majority of the field. Only 2 Mercs?

Well..this is one of many reasons why I started this thread..so much miss-information out there..

Here is a fact:

In Paris 6 Hours 1974..probably to most prestige full race in the world back then..

The entry list for the outboard classes..

16 ON boats powered by Evinrude - Johnson VS 7 Mercury
2 Exp. boats powered by Evinrude- Johnson Rotary no Mercury

In the popular OE class:

21 OE boats powered by Evinrude - Johnson VS 6 Mercury

There was 12 OE boats powered by Carniti..(twice as many then Mercury)

Here is another similar Scotti-Craft in Europe (I think) in early 1973.

Yes..this was before the pickle fork design..Scotti was doing a lot of "wing experiment".
1974 all the boats Cesare Scotti raced was the pickle fork design powered by the Evinrude V6 Super Strangler.
This is from early 1974 at Idroscalo, Italy.
The first picture is the start..the second picture is very interesting..look close at Cesare's rear of the boat..you can see small wings there.

Much more interesting is..this morning I got a few emails from Cesare Scotti's family..Stefania & Massimo Scotti sent me more pictures and info. Coming soon..

As far as wings go (fixed and movable) I believe that Hodges and Molinari were the only ones who experimented with them. Merc stayed away from wings. With power trim and a running surface that constantly changed and the addition wind into the mix, that's a lot going on there at once for the driver's mind to manage.

And also sometimes some of the boats would have a water ballast tank in the bow.
Another function to work whilst driving, loading and unloading water during each lap (for faster laps).

We tried/modified everything on the 1978 Evinrude 55 HP..
The purpose built Clerici cat was very good but we could not find enough top speed to compete with the better Mariner 60. If I remember right in the 65 MPH area. (a very good day)

I would have thought the Mariner was 60 propshaft HP and the omc was powerhead, so it had a head start?
To think the OMC in sst45 trim is 70hp at 7000 all day every day now

Very cool Lars.

For sure, RIP Edgar Rose.
Never met him but always wanted to.

I raced the 20 H Mercs and they are one of my favorite motors of all time.

I knew Edgar was the man behind the “toilet bowl” conversion design but never saw that picture of the mock up of the exhaust.
Love it and thanks.

Lars, I may have found another piece to the puzzle.. Here is a photo of OMC Canada's Tom Wood driving what appears to be the same boat (repainted) that came to Canada after Havasu 1970. Jimbo attended the first race of 1971, held in Peterborough, driving a new style Molinari, while Tom, in the previous year's rocker-bottom(#1920), finished second. Ken Kitson placed third.

Following the race, Better Boating magazine published this article ... Jimbo not only won the event, but was voted "Sportsman of the Day" by his fellow drivers. Throughout the 70's, Cathy and Jimbo traveled many times to this country, returning home with much more than race victories; but the admiration and respect of everyone they met - competitors and fans alike! One incredible couple!!

Charlie Strang and Edgar Rose were both involved in numerous race engine programs during their years at Mercury and OMC. One such engine was the 1950's Mercury 20H, which became a very popular engine amongst stock outboard racers in the USA. The attached autograph mug was designed and made a few years ago, to recognize their contributions to this special race engine.

Lars, I hope Cathy sees this as well.
Jimbo, in what I think was the second Goat boat, in Toronto after winning against a very impressive field of Canadian and US drivers (if I remember there was well over 20 boats).
In Peterborough in either 1972 or 1973 I stood and talked with Cathy. I remember her telling me that Jimbo once nose-dived ('stuffed') in Paris and when the boat resurfaced there was mud on the front of the boat.
Jimbo was indeed a crowd favourite here in Canada. The few times I got to talk to Jimbo to say he was a nice guy would be a gross under statement.

This Is Jimbo’s boat and Ted was co-driver. They lead the Paris race and broke down at 5 1/2 hours. The following week was Berlin. They lead the first lap and most of the in between laps.......main thing they lead the last lap https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/t92/1.5/16/1f3c1.pnghttps://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/t2b/1.5/16/1f604.png. Then Jimbo ran the boat at Lake Havasu City, no co-driver, and won the single engine World Championships https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/t92/1.5/16/1f3c1.pnghttps://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/t2b/1.5/16/1f604.png. After Havasu the boat went to Canada and we don’t know what happened to it.

Mercury made 4,000 Mark20H's. Many times over any other race motor ever made; even so, its probably the most in demand historical race motor.

480224Lars, In your vast collection of old race boat pics do you have any close up pics of the old OMC manual thrust block used on the old GT115 and X115 motors? The GT115 I purchased has one mounted on the boat and it's missing the heavy strap and brackets that hold the motor in place. When I put this motor on the tunnel I'm restoring I would like to install this thrust block.

Very unique pictures from the UIM Formula 1 race last weekend in Evian, France.

Amaury Jousseaume ( son of former Paris 6 Hour winner) also brought his red F1-V8 Molinari/Evinrude V8 from early eighties in to the pit.
This red Molinari/Evinrude V8 got more attention then most modern race boats. Specially when Renato Molinari and Guido Cappellino showed up.

Nothing to do with the thrust block request, but I found this photo from 1973 - shows an interesting Evinrude FUI Class ( approx. 89 CID?) engine on the back of a 16' Checkmate. Hermal Lavoie from Quebec was the driver - a very good one. I'm sitting next to him in my first tunnel, Jackie's former 16' Sprint Molinari. 1973 was the final year for the UI engine to be raced in Canada.

The “infamous” Johnson Metallic Gold Jacket - was the most successful (largest selling) promotional jacket Swingster ever produced. (They didn’t create it, we did.) People either hated it and said they wouldn’t be caught dead in it – or loved it and absolutely had to have one. As a result, we sold thousands! However, since it was metallic it did have a tendency to corrode and turn green.

More OMC racing jackets.
( First the Evinrude)

These were designed/ordered by Ziggy, and sold mainly by Bob (Goat) Nagode at Stock Outboard and OPC races, in the late 1980's and early 1990's.

Tim was so handsome. He hade magnetic personality. HE WAS SMART AND UNDERSTOOD WHAT THE BRIGGS FAMILY MENT TO OMC. I COULD SEE HIM AS THE FUTURE LEADER OF OMC. He was so "Worldly". TALKING TO HIM THOUGH HE WAS MAYBE 19-20 you knew he could run the world. On the way home from the Parker 9 Hour, they ran off the road in a a Colorado Ski area and Tim was killed. I am not sure I every got over this accident. His father, Jim Briggs, had sponsored me personally in 1970. Not OMC Money, JIM'S MONEY!. HE WANTED HIS BOYS TO LEARN TO RACE....

Is it just me OR does 7 out of the 8 boats (you can see the most of) look like they are all same hull / make / design?
The only one that looks different is the #15 at the back because it does not have an enclosed cockpit.

Thanks Ron Hill for your comment about Tim..I met him in Paris 1974 and he talked to me a few minutes. His #30 Scotti-Craft painted in the American flag colors is a memory forever. Sadly the boat did not make it to the end of the 6 hour race. Dont remember if it was Tim or his brother driving when it happened.

Well..by far the best boat for the UIM F3 class racing was the Burgess..most boats are Burgess or copies of Burgess boats.
Most of my wins in the UIM F3 was also boats build by David Burgess.

This is Steve Hill (John Hills son) in his UIM F3 #52 Burgess/Johnson.

Already back in 1974 & 1975 Roger Jenkins won the UIM OE/F3 World title driving David Burgess built boats.
Renato was successful with his own boats in the late seventies racing the UIM OE/F3 class with OMC power.
The problem with Renato's boats was you purchased one and then Renato built a better one for him self.
That was never an issue with David Burgess because he was just a boat builder and sold the very best to anyone paying.
When Renato stopped racing the UIM OE/F3 class after 1980 most racers purchased Burgess boats including me and the brand totally dominated the class to the end.
There was other UIM OE/F3 class boats like Gardin, Clerici, Hodges, Mollgaard etc. but not as good as a Burgess.
On top of that Burgess boats was quality built and priced reasonable.

Back in 1973 at Bristol England, the tobacco companies were allowed to advertise on the race boats.
In fact I remember cigarette girls passing out free samples at the race.

This is from Cardiff, UK 1975 when Cees Van Der Velden won the World ON title with Marlboro as the main sponsor on his Velden/Johnson V6 Stinger GP.
You can see Tom Percival in the background with the JPS sponsorship.
I guess the tobacco rule changed later.

We like old detective TV shows and some are hilarious as to what life was in the 60’s/70’s.
What was acceptable then would explode heads today.

Columbo smoked cigars and smoked them everywhere including other people’s homes and while interviewing people in their hospital room!

Drinking was the same.
EVERYONE drank!

Hilarious!

We’re so much better since big brother started looking after us

Sorry for the hijack Lars.

OMC has the first marine license with Obital around 1984. I think not sure when Merc signed up. Sea Doo also used it in the 90,s.
GM had holdens running around also. When they realized the ffi was good for bigger hp they dropped orbital & purchased the ffi.
Mercury had to pay a license fee for each engine.
OMC licensed Kawsaki & Polaris to the go

Beating the new SE Class Merc 650 XS was easy 1975...but a long story the first time..!! The Scandinavian SE Championship 1975 took place in Forsaa, Finland.

Around 25 boats were in place at this beautiful Lake, and Mercury had just released the new 650 XS UIM SE class race engine and lots of people was hoping the new Merc could give the OMC drivers a run for the money.

Driver Bo Nilson (6) was backed up by AGB, the Swedish distributor for Johnson and I by Huzells, the Swedish distributor for Evinrude. (1)
The strongest Finn was Mercury’s Bimbo Aminoff and a few more drivers from Denmark
and Norway with the new Merc.
The rest was using OMC 3 Cyl. 75 Hp. Four heat and three counts as normally and a clock start.
I did not know how strong the new Merc was, but I was very well prepared and after
the first heat the good news was that the new Merc was no match
(sorry Mercury) and the fight was as usually between Bo (6) and me (1) and some other OMC
drivers.
In the second heat Bimbo Aminoff took the lead but after a few laps I past him and so did Bo but I made a mistake in one turn and Bo past me
for the win.
Well, I do not remember exactly but it came down to the last
heat and the winner of that heat was the overall winner of the race and I was
the lucky one again with only to tens of a second over Bo Nilsson, and I was now
the Scandinavian Champion for the third consecutive year.
Well not yet, because third was Mercury’s Bimbo Aminoff and he filed a protest.
Bo and I did not have any spray paint on our gear cases.
You where allowed to sharpen the skeg, and sand on the gear case if you still was within the template.

We pass that test easy, but the Chief technical inspector said that you must spray paint the gear case, and ours was just polished aluminum
so he disqualified Bo and me.
Bimbo Aminoff was now declared the winner and Bo Nilsson went nuts.
I know how angry he can get, and it turned ugly. After a major argument we left for Sweden and straight to Roland Rosenholtz, the Swedish Power Boat Federations chairman to tell him the
story, but he was already informed.
Mr. Rosenholtz made a few phone calls to Finland and UIM.
“There was nothing in the UIM rule book saying the gearcase must be painted/or not painted”
After a few days I received the Trophy and the price money
from Finland and I was officially the Scandinavian Champion 1975.
Thank you Roland Rosenholtz

Yeah..............I tried starting a thread about gearcase paint specs on S&F but nobody responded? Pretty straightforward on modified classes but the arguments and yelling always centered around the "stock / OEM" classes. Nobody wanted to clarify the rules about wet sanding paint either? There were even arguments over the surface finish specs on bare aluminum? Merc used primer and Phantom Black on their first SSM inlines but the paint disappeared when the CLE cases first appeared. I can't recall ever seeing any paint used on either Merc or OMC CLE style cases? If they did, can somebody can prove me wrong with a photo?

Well..UIM made it clear.
You did not have to spray paint the gear case as long as the gear case meet the specifications you where legal.
A note is..no paint did not increase speed.

Well..but we raced under UIM.
A spare part gear case came from OMC without paint.
The spray paint in a can from OMC (Johnson or Evinrude) did never stick perfect.
Paint came lose and looked terrible..
That was the reason for no paint.
Used up a lot of gear cases 1975 because the bearing holder cracked.

European Champion for the third consecutive year 1975

After the Race in Forsaa, Finland and my enormous success in the SE class the
past 3 years winning over 50 races rumors was circulating that I had a special engine from OMC.

Well, I DID NOT and the engine I used on my own Clerici SE boat 1975 was a stock short leg 75 Hp Evinrude from my inventory at my dealership.
A legal higher compression cylinder head was the only change, and the race power trim and stiff rubber mount.
I can tell the truth now, and the speed advantage was from the boat and the set up and my driving style.
One way to get the much higher top speed was to raise the engine up much higher than normal race set up.
The stock gear case was like a brake, and I was 2-3″ above everybody else, BUT that made it very difficult to drive/handle the boat.
The prop lost the grip, and the engine lost the cooling water but the trick was to just before the prop lost the grip to use power trim and throttle/steering to avoid that to happen.

I tested for many days and weeks how far you could drive before the engine started to
overheat and that was around 900 meters.
I lost many powerheads before I found out a way to back of just a little to pick up enough water to cool the engine on the straight a way before the turn.
On top of that you have to use the power trim in and out in a special way to make the “air bag” under the tunnel to lift the boat and I have to say that was my best
advantage.
The Big race this year was Sabaudia Italy, and I called friends in Italy to find out about this new place for the race and was told that it is in a Lagoon, shallow water and flat water.

That was for me great news, and I worked on raising the engine even higher on the transom and picked up a few more MPH.

There was a local race in Stockholm before the Big one, and I used that race as a test. Bad news..hooked and rolled.
Damage the boat, a few days after I told Paul Kalb that I preferred
to race my own boat instead of the factory SE boat.
I got help to repair my boat just in time to make it to Italy.
Normally I was hiding everything I was doing, (learned from Molinari) but for this Big race I changed that.
Parked the boat in the pit so everybody could see my set up and prop.
I told the Race officials that I want my engine inspected before the
race to put an end to “the special engine”rumor.
They said No, but told me that my engine is going to be inspected very seriously after the race if I was the winner.
I have never felt so ready to win a race and now all the good things started to happen.
Around 35 boats was at the race, and most drivers looked at my race set up and started to raise up there engines higher. That was my plan…
Mercury had maybe 10 drivers using the 650 XS.
4 heat, 3 counts and clock start and I was pretty good at them and took the start and turned first.
Then just pulled away on the long two turn race course.
Many drivers was hooking left and right, because they could not
drive with the engine that high.
This race was for me a perfect one. I won 3 heat in a row and did not race the last one.

I asked the officials to start taking my engine apart and they did.
The power head, mid section even the gear case to check gears and impeller and everybody could now see it was a stock 75 hp Evinrude.
Never worked on the ports or pistons.
Just standard.
Lots of disappointed people when my engine was cleared, but
Lars was happy and the European Champion for the third consecutive year.

The only lower unit failure I ever had on a Mercury was the rear bearing carrier on a first year propjet Merc 500. Broke and every thing but the pinion and forward gear came out. This happened in very shallow water at Key West and I recovered everything but the shift cam follower. Taught myself how to build lower units after that.

Lars, Is this a billet brg hsg or stainless??? The originals were cast aluminum even in the race engines I would imagine. Stock gear cases were not designed for surfacing I guess. I had a Johnson V6 on a bass boat w/hydraulic 6" jack plate that wore out the g/case and brg hsg...had to replace the assy. Is it only the OMC's that have problems surfacing the g/cases or do they all have the same problems?

Pretty sure its billet, not SS. Some OMC production gear-cases had some issues. My experience was mainly with the "nitro" back when they came out 1974/75.

Ole's park illuminated in the Norwegian night. This small park is located close to his birthplace in Hunndalen, Norway. He was named Ole Andersen Aaslundeie. He moved to Wisconsin in 1882 at the age of 5 with his mother Beatha Olsdatter and his two younger siblings. His father Anders Olsen had moved over the year before. When Ole turned 10, his father took him out of school to work on their farm instead.

Ole later took the name Evenrud, which is a farm in Vestre Toten, Norway. In Norway it was common to split out small pieces of land to people associated with the main farm, in this case Ole took the name from the smaller farm Evenrudsstuen under the main farm Evenrud. Reason: Because that was were his true protector was born: his Mother.
