Every year we get two generations of "love bugs" Some years the spring season gets really bad. Several years ago it was epic. It took me two hours to clean up a small Acura sedan. It had over 1/4 inch of buildup from driving less than 100 miles. That was the only time I ever saw love bugs at my house. They stopped about a mile south of here that year.

We missed most of the heavy rain today, but run in to lots of lovebugs. “Team Larina Detailing” took care of the 1035 front..

I usually keep a can of WD-40 in the truck. I keep the front sprayed down in lovebug season (or f@&kbug seadon as grandpa used to say). Keeps the little buggers from sticking to the paint!

After some research I am pretty sure the #18 Molinari/Evinrude SS is from Berlin 6 Hours 1969.
I dont understand French but I love the last part of the headline...:):)

Well Willabee, I do not have a French headline but an English..
Pretty interesting reading.
Scotti was leading the Paris 6 Hour race 1969 in the #18 boat above with many laps when he broke down 35 minutes from the finish. Sanders/McKinley with Johnson power took over the lead and a big fight between Renato and McKinley to the finish line. Renato won, but not by much..

OMC was way ahead of the competition when the production V8 came out 1985.
Modified by Evolution Marine the engine was close to 400 HP over 30 years ago and half the weight of the new Yamaha 425HP 5.6 liter V8..

Big news from Yamaha Outboards..
A brand new 425 HP 5.6 liter V8 outboard is hitting the US market in August 2018

Even 30 years ago, OMC V8s had very hefty price tags. (including the 3.4L Merc). What's the MSRP for the new Yamaha? I looked into possibly buying one of the earlier versions of the Yamaha but nearly had to check into an ER at a hospital from sticker shock when I discovered it would cost me something in the mid five figures just to buy one?

When I got the two first Evinrude 300XP V8 shipped from Waukegan, Illinois 1985 for my Flying Flipper the dealer invoice was 52,500 Swedish kronor plus tax..
That is $6,100 US plus tax.
A pretty good deal back then and I sold a ton of Evinrude V8 outboards. I did add around 15% profit to the dealer net at got some bonus at the end of the year. (10% bonus as an exlusive Evinrude dealer.
$6,100 minus 10 % bonus is $5,490 for a box of Evinrude 300 XP - V8 3.6 liter looper 2-stroke.

BRP Evinrude E-Tecs are the popular choice out here in oyster country. These commercial companies have E=Tecs hanging on every work skiff they have and that includes the whale watching boats. They need drop-n-and-go propulsion and can't afford the idle time trying to dig stern drives out of a hull. Mercs? Hardly ever seen on commercial boats. Yamaha? A few (too expensive) Honda? A few more, but they're getting replaced by E-Tecs,

More Evinrude V8 power from 1985.
The 2 X Evinrude V8 boat is my Flying Flipper and the one with a single Evinrude V8 is a Smuggler 28 we sold and rigged for Peter a friend of mine.
Peter could not live with the question why he only had one V8 engine when I had two..
Later same year we sold Peter one more Evinrude and re-rigged his boat with 2 X Evinrude V8 275HP.
He later sold the Smuggler to the Swedish Coastguard.

No..a few every year. Was never a big seller in Sweden.
Some boatbuilders like Solvigg Boats use them as standard power.
We did a lot of Sea Drive service.
The V8 4 liter Sea Drive was pretty interesting.

...I recall buying numerous 3.6 GT's & XP's in '85 from Second Effort GG for $4200.00 each. As many as I needed at the OEM level. They had, at the time, a large surplus of them, that year & the next. Bought as many as people wanted, but not every body wanted them, as Mercury was still the big preferred multi-engine offshore power of choice in Florida. I tried to sell more of them, as I was getting a great price, but...

The fact is from late 1983 and three years forward we shipped thousands of brand new large Evinrude back to the US because dealer pricing was way lower in Sweden than the US..(Yamaha sales was strong in Sweden and no Yamaha in the US)
OMC did not like that but never took action to stop the "gray market" sale.
Scan Marine in Pompano Beach and Outboardland in Marina Del Ray was the outlet for the "Swedish outboard sale"
We also did thousands of Mariner the same way but Brunswick ended that by replacing the distributor in Sweden.
No way a new Evinrude 300XP/Johnson 300GT V8 was priced at $4,200 from Second Effort 1985.
That was the first year for the V8 and OMC was low on V8 inventory all year.
Maybe years later you could get good deals from Second Effort.
In 1985 the V8 was only available in standard rotation and we got the counter rotation kits late 1985, early 1996 .
Pretty complicated process to change the powerheads to counter rotation
and new gears in the lower unit also.
First year for the "real" counter rotation V8 with gear cases only was 1988 when the 4 liter V8 replaced the 3.6 liter.

Plenty of new big heavy CC boats and the new Yamaha 425 V8 is going to do great.
Most people with the money to purchase the Grady White, Everglades, HydraSports etc. dont care about the weight.

Well, I respect the Memorial Day Weekend, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Swedish Midsummer but so much crazy stuff is going on.
The roads are packed with people driving like there is no tomorrow. Boating is fun but we are motorhoming.
We are just going to be parked. Watch the F1 from Monaco, Indy 500 and maybe CocaCola 600 on Sunday.
Crank up the coach Monday morning and drive to the best marina in the world.
MarineMax, Missouri we are coming in next week.

I can remember when a Volvo inboard powered Smuggler V hull won the Paris 6hr race driven by 2 Swedish airline pilots around 1967/8.

The first two pictures is from Paris 1967. Ebbekke and Henriksson was the two who started Smuggler Boats in Sweden.
Both worked for SAS as commercial pilots.

I don't know, but so far BRP/Evinrude have been slow to react to what the market need.

stroke is short but rods same length as stock vee looper when you put them side by side.
Those might be the later heavy rods I think if they have the large bolts. 7/16 12 point?
The build sheet says they ran them to 9500 on the production line.
(That was done with the 3.0, not sure that also included the 3.5, nosub where are you?)

My friend Rich Sestini is writing about the firefighter Mike Salber who lost his life in the P1 SuperStock accident last weekend.

“Been thinking a lot about Mike Salber since I learned of his tragic death...... What is hard to comprehend, is he volunteered to save the lives of the boat racers, to later have this same sport take his own life ....... Key West SBI Worlds 2017 Mike did have to put his strength to the test when a boat flipped ....... Going to miss him..... Looking back, we had some dam good times !!!! **** he even went to court back in 1982 to testify on my behalf ...... So many stories" :(

There was a push to get the class running here in Singapore which would have meant total beginners racing, I steered clear of that.
There are still 2 boats here last time I looked.

I found out a stock v8 balancer is same size and weight so will work.
The correct one has different rubber in it but unknown what the difference is

Some unmarked engines were shipped to Europe for racing back then. They were the forerunners of the GT 115s. OMC was keeping a low profile in the early racing days under Charlie Strang.

BRP need to step up a lot of things pretty fast to keep up with the market. Not sure at this time why we are not getting any info about future products.
