In 1966 I drove in the Orange Bowl Regatta 9 Hour race. The winner of the single engine outboard class was a European built v-bottom with an Evinrude on it. That was the first competitive OMC powered boat I had seen at the time. What motor was that?

This is another interesting entry in the Paris 6 Hour race 1970.
Tom Percival/Bob Spalding in the Johnson Stinger V4 powered #39 boat.
The #38 boat also with Johnson Stinger V4 power is Shakespeare/Michel of GB.

Hi tgsearay (https://www.screamandfly.com/member.php?11207-tgsearay)

Whats the difference in the way a V bottom like the Allison in the pic handles with the small gearcase vs the larger cases?
lars strom
11-22-2018, 09:34 AM
A smaller gearcase/prop. is always better for top speed. A large production gearcase means bigger props and bigger prop. rides.

Yes. Power trim on tunnels rendered the kneel-down obsolete. Bill Critchfield and Jeff built this larger sit-down version with trim. It was terrible, ran either stuck or trying to blow over. They added the steps, but it didn't help. Jeff blew it over badly in Belle Glade and Bill burned it back at the shop.

ron, please explain the sentence after yes.
"Yes" was confirming that it was Jeff. Then that he could no longer compete with tunnels with trim into the wind in the kneel-down. It was still faster through turns and fast enough downwind, but you can only lean so far forward!!!

UIM OE class racing 1975.
I found this german article from the European championship race in Brodenbach.
WOW..memories are flying..In May we raced the World title in Aix-les-Bain, France and Roger Jenkins won (defended his 1974 title) in his #1 Burgess/Johnson.
(See smaller article)..we both used a very powerful OMC race engine but my Burgess was 4 inch shallow in the tunnel instead of Jenkins 6 inch. Paul Kalb ordered my Burgess this way. Very fast but impossible the race. ( I crashed bad at the OMC in early May and the boat was repaired for Brodenbach.
Rain and strong wind/waves ruin our weekend in Brodenbach.
Both Roger and me broke down. I now see I ended up 10th.
Hans-Georg Krage did a great race and won in is hydro.

I cant find a good color picture of the 6 inch shallow tunnel Roger raced 1975 (above), but the paint scheme looked similar to this 1974 OE class boat.
If I remember right it was a Milesmaster built by David Burgess. My 4 inch tunnel was one of the first Burgess boats built by David.

Lars, in 1974 and 1975 was European OE the same as North American SE (stock gearcase with F/N/R) or was OE the same as North American MOD 50 (racing gearcase Forward only)?
The engine on Roger's boats look like stock 15" mid short shafts. I know the Merc 650XS was an SE engine and the Merc 650X was our North American MOD 50.

The UIM OE class was a pure racing class. No limitations at all. Free boat and engine. Max 850 cc. Even the fuel was free.
OMC did not have a real OE race engine for the 1974 season. We used the SE class engines in the OE class that year. Roger Jenkins got the first real OMC OE class race motor for the Paris 6 hour race 1974.
1975 OMC made a few more real pure race engines for the UIM OE class Roger & I raced.
1976 was the first year OMC started to sell the CC for the OE class.
This is Hans-Georg Krage in a UIM OE class boat 1974/75
Yes he used nitro in the methanol also. It was legal at that time.

Pretty sure this is one of the two OMC real UIM OE class race engines in Europe 1975.
Jenkins raced one and I the other one. We could only use them at a few races.
This picture is from Cardiff 1975 and its not a production mid section. This mid section used a racing gearcase without shifting.

That is the Wild Geechee. I took those pics on Johns Island, this must have been around 2011. The boat was restored by the original builders nephew and still keeps it on Johns Island. Sadly, the Wild Geechee II was stored on display under a pavilion at Rocks Pond when one of the hurricanes destroyed it.
Last time I saw it race was around 1975 with a Super Strangler on it. Amazing little boat as it would rock back on its tail and just run away from the competition. It would corner like it was on tracks.
Cool boat! What prop is that?

Thank you so much Cathy.
OMC had a Wood Miles Master that they used for testing for the SE motor. After they finished testing I drove the boat for a few Midwest races. It was white to start with and I had flowers put on it. I blew it over at Litchfield, Illinois. After the repair it was painted blue and white with flowers. It was named the Sugar Shaker. We went for a record in Kaukauna, Wisconsin in June, 1975. I hit a rock bar in SE and blew the gear case. Then I stepped up to SG and set the record but was DQ because the rear porches were not measured correctly. The boat was 2 inches too short on the running surface. Jimbo set the UJ record that day at 103.332. We were both trying to set records for Evinrude that year. My boat may be the one you are talking about since it was the only Wood Miles Master that OMC Engineering had in the States as far as we know.

I thought they had given up on mid-sections but there's one offered (and at a dirt-cheap price too). I wish they were still making the large EFI front ends and reed cages. Looks like most of their stuff is for Mercs now.

Yes, this is from 1981 and Mercury made very good props. You needed to modify the rubber hub to solid. I dont think its a quicksilver cable steering. (Pretty pricey overseas) Teleflex in Sweden made a similar for a better deal.
Back then OMC did not have counter rotation as an option.
This was also the first year for the 2.6 liter cross-flow V6. (235 only)
I sold a ton of them.

We never sold any counter rotations without reverse. Maybe some aftermarket stuff/or Second Effort 1983 and later.
The first counter rotations we OMC dealers could order was 1985. The one when the powerhead was run counter and a new gear set/drive shaft and much more. (Looper V6/V8 only). Took forever to turn a standard to counter. Lots of problems and finally we got the real counter rotation gearcases from OMC a year or two later.

for the xflow v6 they had a neutral and fwd box so fwd was aft in the box to suit std rotation engine

We did many counter like that and I think the V8 was running smoother the other way but a terrible kit. Many hours to install and it did not fit so good.
Extremly hard to get parts for. That stupid cable around the powerhead was a disaster.
Nope, we stopped installing them.

Well 1985/86 and 1987 OMC sold a counter rotation kit for the V8.
Second Effort sold engines they installed the kit but Limited Edition model and cost way more money.
1988 was the first year for factory counter rotation from OMC.
Finally the new gear case was available
First picture the kit, second the new gear case 1988.

That the typical outboard dealer only stocks their inventory with 60hp and below these days. A 25hp long shaft costs more than my limited production Merc Twister did in the 70's.

I recall this as well. Also, OMC here in the U.S., because they wanted to be the first, advertised for over two years prior, that they had a full gearshift counter rotation V-6 gearcase available, AND...VRO oil-injection available then...and they did NOT. This was about the same timeframe...1980ish. In about 1982, they gave me a part number for a new 25'' left-hand gearcase, for a customers new boat. Got it, installed it & it blew up.

Well, the VRO was introduced 1984. Not for all models but that was the first year.
I have gone thru a lot of OMC part books from 1980 to 1984 and there is no parts, gearcases or any other signs of a counter rotation gearcase for V6 cross-flow with forward/neutral only.
I have never heard of it but maybe possible in some set up for racing.

Here is my wild guess - 1978; Canadian Spencer Dunn driving the Pinel version of the OMC lay-down boat that Jimbo drove in 1977.
Spencer never really liked this boat and it was later converted to a regular sit-up cockpit and driven by Jim Harrison with a V6 Evinrude.

Your correct , Spencer Dunn and big Roy Knight doin' the mandatory roost inspection on warm up - LOL . Spencer performed a spectacular blow over in this boat at the Welland kilo's . Ended up smashed to pieces ( Spencer , the boat came out relatively unscathed ) with Tom Wood telling him " I told you not to try and beat me , I told you .... " as they were carrying him up the ramp in a safety stretcher . They were both very competitive with each other let alone the Mercury guys .
I remember the conversation(s) about the drivers inability to " feel " the attitude of the boat under trim . He found the " sweet ( bad ) spot in
Welland that day .

I thought that was Roy Knight. I remember Roy was usually with Sid Goddard in the early 70's then was with Spencer later on...actually I think Roy helped everyone. Very nice guy who was a fixture at most of our Sportscraft races in the 70's.
Your telling of Spencer blowing the lay-down boat over is exactly why I relayed that Spencer did not like this boat.
Tom Wood gave Spencer the "Told You So" more than once, I remember Tom giving it to Spencer at the Marathon Nationals in Magog, Quebec 1973.

Hi guys, it my SST 100 that we run with the Victorian Outboard Club (https://www.facebook.com/victorianoutboardclub/?fref=gc&dti=2043017495976607&hc_location=ufi) in Australia. We originally ran the 2000cc engine however due to local class rules, we built a 60 degree 1730cc engine. For it size, the 60deg is amazing and I won almost every I entered with it.
What RPM did you end up turning with the 60 degree ? I love the " side path " intake of the V4 & V6 60'S . Lots of potential for air flow and light weight .

problem is the exhaust is not designed for big HP, so lots of grinding I would imagine

HMore UIM F1 - 2018
Late Saturday afternoon one of the three below is probably going to be the 2018 Formula 1 World Champion.
My heart is hoping for Erik Stark. He could be the first Swedish F1 Champion ever.. !!
Shaun is probably a safer pick. He is the points leader and need to finish fourth or better to be the champ but anything could happen.
Thani third picture is a big possibility also.
Stay tuned..

My guess why the Caldwell CRT 2.5 did not race in the last UIM F1 race today.
Today's UIM F1 is a spec. engine class run by the pro-motor. You can only use the old Merc V6 that is not even sold from Mecury Racing anymore.
There is rules for how you can modify the powerhead and some teams have been disqualified for not following the rules.
There is no way all the other teams are going to allow someone to use the Caldwell CRT 2.5 engine when they can not do what they want to do on their own Merc powerhead.

WOW! Neat to see the Johnson name is still alive and well - would make a great comeback story for us that grew up with outboards back in the 50's, 60's and 70's !!

F1 teams have even bigger inventory problems than just power heads. Mercury Marine will cease production of ALL F1 components (mid sections, cowls, engines, props, gears, etc) after 2019. F1 has 3 choices:
(1) Change the rules -especially allowing aftermarket (2) Acquire aftermarket non-Mercury product sources (3) Make the big leap to 4 stroke power (not likely).
Either adapt (3 choices) or watch the sport eventually die. USA (APBA) blew off the idea of using "green motors" (Low emission 2 strokes) and kept using their old stuff until it wore out. Then, the boats started to sit in the garage, barn or driveway. They would never adapt to any kind of 4 stroke products because of the given weight penalty which would mean that speed records would never be broken again, etc. Tunnel boat racers should have taken pointers from the motocross guys. They made the leap to 4 strokes and kept on going.

Buy OMC F1 parts from Seaway, I'm sure they will supply them forever, choose your powerhead

I was putting some serious thought into racing OPC again but I don’t think I will. As far as I can tell, OPC has no vision for the future. They aren’t thinking five or ten years down the road, but instead they are still “fighting yesterday’s war” as we say in my line of work. It’s time they accept green motors as the future and leverage what they can or OPC will be a faded memory.

A lot of boat and engine development has happened. Look at champ and the boats haven't moved on in 10 to 15 years. Even the older DACS etc are making there way onto the US circuit now and providing they are not heavy endurance boats seem to run at the front.

No, my heart is not broken because Erik Stark did not win the UIM F1 World title.
My bigger concern is the only way to win the UIM F1 title is racing for Team Abu Dhabi. (The top three 2018 is Team Abu Dhabi)
Erik was not going to race a full season in his own boat this year because lack of sponsorship.
Team Abu Dhabi signed him up after he won the London GP and another small UIM F1 team is gone.
Like it or not but the Middle East is running our sport today.
That breaks my heart.

Used to be that the UIM allowed way motor motor mods than did the US Champ Boat version and I think its still the same way.
Last I read the US version were trying to keep the motors even where the UIM let the motor builders go gonzo.
And budgets as powerbout noted.

The UIM F1 use to be a pure racing class with no limitations. Only max cylinder volume (2 Liter "ON" after OMC stopped racing the V8) Even the fuel was free.
Merc changed the rules to 2.5 liter and now the promotor have his own rules.
You can only use the old Merc V6 2.5 liter. Nothing else.

Well, UIM or not. A bigger question is how to get factories like Yamaha, Suzuki, Evinrude interested to promote their products in the racing world.
Not an easy task.

Always run your hose for a couple of seconds before attaching to rear of motor. Don't make my mistake and blow a lizard into the pee hole. Ended up plugging the line and had to be taken in to have our local Evinrude shop to remove.
