Jimbo was not at this race. It appears to be a slotted Scotti with a Rotary. Mike Downard was his co-driver. The boat came to the States, Jimbo drove it in testing the blowout problems of the production 235 lower unit. After that it was sold.

Scotti was to drive one and I drove the other. The boat Scotti was driving blew the engine in testing and that boat didn’t run. I ran the other slot deck Scotty number 22 I think and won the race.

Rotary John,

What was the main reason for not running the rotaries in Paris 1973..??
Was it because Mercury asked the Paris organization to keep them out of the race and not invite the OZ class as in Windemere..??

Look closely at the picture of the 2 of them in the boat. The bucket is silver (Evinrude) and the shroud is Johnson. I don't recall why it happened. They ran the modified V-4 14/23 gearcase. Don't remember why they didn't run the 15/17 as it was 10/15 MPH faster on the straights. I know in Paris they wanted the bigger foot to help control the boat in ruff water.

Lots of people are asking me why I am spending all the time running this thread and the FaceBook page.
Here is one of many reasons..pretty nice comment and I enjoy keeping the OMC racing history alive.
Thanks to everyone clicking in here and/or on the FaceBook page.
On the FB page Bill Grannis and I are spending lots of time screening new members.
Of ten asking per day..only around two get accepted..

Go with a ghost writer service. They will do the hard work for you. You just provide the material, which you've already done here.

Awesome stuff. Just do it, that way it will be preserved between two hardcovers.

At this race, Jimbo was running the Evinrude Rotary. The wind was blowing and the water was very rough. The decision was made not to put the Rotary’s in the water. The PR people and the writers still wanted their photos and stories. Gerry’s boat was in the pits on the trailer. This photo is not in the water. Jimbo got in the cockpit and Miss BP got on the boat behind him for a photo shoot on the trailer in the pit. Someone should have laid something over Gerry’s name to prevent confusion,
but they were all too busy with Miss BP to think about that. https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/tab/1.5/16/1f923.png

Now you know the rest of the story.

The boat racing world have lost one of the greatest.

Roger Jenkins was a good friend, a very tough racer and a lot of fun. From our SE class racing in Finland 1973 to many years of OE class racing with OMC & Volvo/Konig and finally F1-V8 racing.

Many fun memories from OMC Belgium when we prepared our boats for Rouen 24 hours and other European races.

Roger won the OE class World title a couple of times and than the big one **1982 Formula One World V8 Champ.**

There was no one friendlier in the pit than Rogers wife Denise.

My weekend stay in Wales years ago in Roger & Denise guestroom are memories for life.

Thanks Roger (to the right) for all the fun & crazy memories.

If there was an easy way to do so I am ready but dont have the right "book contacts"

Ghost Writing Companies are in the business of receiving your data, and formulating it into a manuscript. You approve the final manuscript revision before it goes to book publishing.

If your going to write a journal of OMC racing and your involvement in the racing scene, then you might be satisfied with the more economical service providers. See the video by the twins.

Now if you are going to write a historical novel of said racing scene, then I would suggest you seek the higher quality writers/service. Why is Rocky The Movie very popular, is because the writers wrote the sport of boxing into a novel. Rocky's life experiences and personal relationship challenges on the streets, preparing for the fight, and inside the ring. (A more complete adaptation of the human condition, then a racing journal). A compilation of media news clippings of boat racing into a book is a racing journal.

The racing journal will have limited appeal. Attracting only people who know the racing fraternity.
A racing historical novel will appeal to the racing fraternity (if true to the spirit of racing), and also the reading public who escape into the protagonist's life, faults, and accomplishments. The reading public want to identify with the protagonist and characters in the novel.

Lars your contribution into book form, will be highly anticipated by many. Do yourself proud.

Thanks Lake X Kid,

Yes I know boat racing history is not a great seller. Many have tried without great result.
I my case I am thinking about mixing it up with growing up in Sweden..running my successful OMC dealership, leaving Sweden for the USA. Traveling to 48 states with different motor-homes over 25 years.
Of course boat racing all over the world, working for Kenny Brack and was part of his IRL Championship 1998 and Indy 500 win 1999.
Lots of good stuff in the pipeline.
My wife Carina did a daily dairy with pictures and info one year when we traveled the USA.
We have seen stuff very few Americans have seen..:)

A Book written about (normal) Self within the pulse of racing will be - hard press to sell more than 100 copies to friends and contemporaries. The larger general book reading audience/buyers (and movie fans) gravitate to character relationships and entertaining stories. The avid novel reader will yawn, when reading too much about race technology and listings of race results.

In the movies Talladega Nights & Rocky we are introduced to family members, and the separation and bonding that takes it course outside of the sport scene. Talladega Nights family scenes define who, the person, driver Will Ferrell (Ricky Bobby) is. We find Sylvester Stallion (Rocky) is awkward and not polished when asking his future wife out on their first date. And this romantic union causes friction between him and his best buddy.

In Rush, Tin Cup, & Ford vs Ferrari, we witness the rivalry of competitor drivers and corporate money. Romance drives Kevin Costner (Tin Cup) to better his pro-game, to win Rene Russo (and tournament) over his rival Don Johnson. James Hunt’s playboy lifestyle is, antithesis to Niki Lauda methodical seriousness and with contempt it drives him on, to compete against Hunt in the movie Rush.

A League of Their Own is, coincidental representative of Boat Racing. Boat racing, like girls baseball, does not draw large crowds to their respective events. Yet reluctant Tom Hanks (the intoxicated coach) and his girl’s team captivate viewers, with coach and players dialogue exchanges. The girls reveal star quality and competitive spirit to the local fans.

Novels give writers artistic license to larger than life characters and amazing storylines. Hollywood script writers are professionals and give us a synopsis of what is successful.
Future historical-novel writers of Boat Racing can learn wise techniques from the Hollywood pros.

Future historical-novel writers of Boat Racing can learn wise techniques from the Hollywood pros.

Exaggerate the Hollywood suave and good looks of (i.e. Johnny Sanders, Bob Spalding, Bill Seebold) the drivers (women readers are attracted to approachable, confident, and good looking leading men). Include the pressure to secure and maintain a corporate sponsor (i.e. OMC, Mercury, NGK). Disclose the driver’s motivation to win, and to place the sport’s danger in a convenient perspective of risk and reward.

Add hyperbole to the owners (i.e. Carl Kiehkaefer, Bernie Little, Al Copeland) wealth, lifestyle, play toys, and extravagant spending. Over the top celebrations post wins.

Include Drivers dynamic with wives and/or girlfriends; integrate on the pages the ladies’ charm, beauty, vivacious, romance, sexiness, flirtations, affairs, and loyalty.

Reveal the drivers’ family members at home, shop, and in the pits. Nepotism, work ethics, and friction with the race team will help, the readers to better identify with the characters.

A rogue’s shady dealing adds counterpoint to the protagonist’s lifestyle. And the storyline is always better with a mischievous counterpart (Don Aronow, Cocaine Cowboys). Many cowboy movies have the bad guys wearing black hats.

A great novel which people/readers can identify with the protagonist (main character) and root-for, will bring extra new fans to the Sport of Boat Racing.

Those V8 era boats were so cool, a great time of innovation for the sport. I wish I had been able to see them run.

The post from Mercury about Havasu is great but also disheartening because it shows their continued irreverence to American tunnel racing. the APX series of engines are great, true works of mechanical art but they are not relevant to the NGK series at this time, nor in the near future in my opinion. The series (teams in this case) is low budget, that is obvious to anyone watching, and the engine package they are running is so dumbed down it's ridiculous but they're essentially forced to do so for lack of real options. The APX engines would be awesome to see in competition here in the US, and I am fully on board with four stroke tech. but these teams can build a dozen steel bore 220hp carb motors for what one of those four strokes will cost them. I don't pretend to know the answer, and maybe there is no answer other than continue on the course they are on now I don't know. I do know that the racing today is neither as competitive nor as fun to watch as it was 20-25 years ago.

Thanks,
Without digging to dip in the Mercury racing on this OMC thread but sponsorship and popularity has always been the biggest issue for tunnel boat racing.
Paris, Pittsburgh and Stockholm GP did get hundreds of thousands of spectators..but no income for the race organization..
I think Charlie Strang hit the nail in this report..

The last pictures is me in Pittsburgh 1983..lots of spectators..

OMC F1-V8 racing by Charlie Strang

USF1 United States Formula One

The when, where, who and why of the V-8 racing circuit will all be found in the following story.

When we at OMC were developing a V-8 “fishing motor”, circa 1980, we decided to build a racing version of it to replace our Wankel outboards which had been barred from most European races.

Since there were few places to race a 3-1/2 liter outboard in the USA at that time (other than enduros) we decided to race them primarily in Europe. In UIM, the 3-1/2 liters put the V-8 into class OZ (unlimited displacement). At a meeting in Europe the UIM decided OZ would henceforth be known as Formula One. In 1981 the John Player tobacco company of England sponsored the John Player World Championship series for Formula One. There were 10 V-8s running there in 1981, plus a number of Merc V-6 engines.

In the fall of 1982 Bob Spalding realized that the V-8s were running faster in competition than the Class X outboard hydro record—so he ran a Kilo on Lake Windermere in his tunnel boat at 139.66 mph. Not long after, Rick Frost—also of England—ran a Kilo in his F-1 tunnel boat at 144.16.

In those days tunnel boat design had not kept up with the available power and we had 4 deaths in 4 months. This led to the development of the safety cockpit—financially sponsored by both OMC and Mercury—which did a fantastic job of reducing risk.

During 1985 OMC’s European operation had a problem with a race promoter who spent ridiculous sums on F-1—about 3.2 million in one summer! As a result, I pulled the plug on F-1 in Europe for 1986.

This incident, plus all we had spent on racing in the factory battles of the 1970s and early 1980s, convinced me we were not getting our money’s worth out of the sport—with top-notch factory teams holding great races in remote locations—and the publicity was zilch.

We then decided to concentrate on racing the V-8s in the USA—where most large outboards were sold—and to try to fund it with sponsor money. In other words, to use other companies’ money to promote our product through racing.

We hired the top sports promotion company in the USA—or maybe the world—to find sponsors for outboard racing. Four months and $600,000 in fees later they told us that outboard racing was of no interest to the public and sponsorship was not to be had.

We decided to try it anyway, following where possible the example set by car racing. OMC’s VP for Marketing, Ron Ingram, and I decided on a USA Formula One circuit with the following points in mind:

1. We would have a series of 6 to 8 races in the USA, open to drivers from all over the world.
2. It would be an F-1 series with the only limitation being that the engines must be available to anyone on the open market—to avoid the expensive and promotionally useless factory competition of the past. I think we set the required number of engines produced at 50. (This led to an interesting and even amusing lawsuit with Mercury.)
3. Our races would only be held at metropolitan locations with good press facilities.
4. The race would always be held in conjunction with existing major waterfront shows or events to insure a maximum crowd on race days.
5. We would have large prize purses, never before seen in boat racing, to excite the media—and the teams.
We then met with representatives of ABC, NBC and CBS to determine the ideal format. The networks designed a one-hour format for ideal TV coverage. This was the source of the 45 minute feature event—still used today at times.

We found a great series sponsor in Champion Spark Plug who regularly brought their distributors and dealers to the races and who also promoted the F-1 races in their ads. OMC also put much money into each race to make it a top-notch event worthy of media attention.

If I remember rightly, we started the US F-1 series in 1986—with over $600,000 in prize money for 7 races. We had plenty of European teams and plenty of US entrants. Probably the top event each year was Pittsburgh—where the police had a real job keeping the huge crowds in safe viewing areas.

The US F-1 series went on for about 4 years with all the top US and European F-1 drivers involved. There were always a few Mercs in the field, but only Bill Seebold was ever competitive—particularly on the shorter courses where the big V-8 boats had a bit more difficulty on the turns. The speeds were high—on the 1-1/2 mile course at Beaumont, Texas, Ben Robertson set a lap speed record of 141.33 mph. They were great races.

We thought it was a great series—as did the teams and the boating press—but the public interest did not warrant the cost. The TV networks finally told us that the F-1 events were great—but that boat racing simply could not draw enough attention to create adequate advertising income for the networks. As I recall, they commented that car racing could attract huge followings because, at that time, about 150 million Americans had cars and could relate to them—while only about 10 million Americans had boats.

At any rate, it became very clear that what was probably the best outboard racing circuit of all time could not justify its cost in terms of promotion, publicity and sales.

So – in 1990 I pulled the plug on the OMC F-1 circuit and we went to putting the money into grass-roots racing by producing the 2, 3 and 4 cylinder engines for OPC and sponsoring activity for those classes.

Now you know why I smile sadly when I hear a would-be promoter telling how he will make millions by turning some boat-racing class into the “next NASCAR”!

The V-8 Johnsons and Evinrudes are long gone. About all that remains on the record books is Bob Wartinger’s 176.586 mph speed record of 1989—with a V-8 on a three-point hydro.

So who did all this? As I recall, from the technical side, Jim Nerstrom handled the racing version of the V-8 in OMC Marine Engineering, where Edgar Rose was OMC’s VP. Gary Garbrecht and Les Calhoun did a great deal of development work and boat testing at Gary’s Second Effort operation in Florida. Jack Leek, OMC’s race boss had a finger in everything every where.

Bob DeGrenier was the guy who actually set up and ran the events. OMC Marketing guy, Barry Caris, oversaw OMC’s PR and promotional activity and co-ordinated the race setup with DeGrenier.

Strang was correct, watching a bunch of OMC engine running around didn't create a lot on interest. Same of UIM in Europe where a bunch of Merc's run around. Nascar is partially successful because you have Ford Chevy, Dodge and Toyota running around. People can relate to that cause they also drive Ford, Chevy Dodge and Toyota's. One thing Strand didn't mention was when the rotaries ran, record crowds showed up and race promoters begged for it to run at their race. Something new and exciting drew crowds. I wonder if a 2l race class whether it is 2 stroke, 4 stroke or rotary would generate enough interest?

Noah Burns

Lars, I fully agree about the point of the org. not making any money from events being a big downfall to the overall success of racing, I still don't understand why it is done but it is not my pill to swallow. When I was young and going to the races there were some you had to pay to attend and some you didn't, in my experience the ones that had a gate, were the better races. Save for Augusta, Pittsburgh and some others.

The V8 generation of the series seemed to draw huge crowds, I guess all we can do is ask what was different about that versus any other time that attendance was lesser?

Noah Burns
11-02-2021, 10:12 AM
Some sort of something "new" as you say to evoke interest is a great start, the problem is cost at this point. And with Mercury being the only ob company with a racing division it hampers the nascar aspect of things with multiple entries. In my lifetime it has been mainly mother merc on all of the series save for the mid 80s with the v8, I was too young then to have understood. I have seen OMC as well as Yamaha powered boats win in the years since I really started to understand what was going on late 80s ish.

If the APX series of engines is what will lead to the increased interest that we all desire, I am all for it, I just fear that it is not in the cards.

I have long thought that the resurgence of a Mod-VP type class would help as much as anything to get the grass roots level interest back. Draw them in with a boat that looks and sounds like the one in their garage, and keep them wowed with the tunnels. That's how my family got into racing, no reason it couldn't happen again!

3. Our races would only be held at metropolitan locations with good press facilities.

Location, location, location.
We all have been to race sites, where there were more waterfowl then resident’s homes on the lakefront. I never understood the logic. How will you generate excitement for people to come and watch a boat race in remote areas?

Like Charlie Strang mention, you need to go to “metropolitan locations” to draw people to the new experience of watching a boat race in their neighborhood. I have witnessed crowds in Amsterdam, and Bristol England, where the race was a local big event. And today, I see healthy spectator numbers at Long Beach and San Diego California.

I understand the importance of a series formula (competitive and affordable) and media coverage, however location is paramount for regional success and national attention. If I were a promoter/organizer my first attention would be the race site location. A prime location (is sort of free advertising) would be an attraction for larger attendance by locals and media coverage.

I absolutely agree. The last NGK race for example, excellent location for a race, beautiful area, everything... could not have been more than 1000-1500 people actually spectating.

Nah............OMC's marketing efforts were non-existent. I would have driven 12 hours to any USA site to watch/hear it run. Running in Provo UT was virtually unheard of by dealers in Seattle. The rotary racing was much akin to that of the turbine running at Indy.

In my humble opinion, tunnel boat racing has never been done properly.

Add the motor politics to that…, it only survives until a/the factory pulls the plug.

I still have a dozen or so races on VHS.
Half are commented by a guy thats never seen a tunnel boat in person.
No idea about lift, C. of G., acceleration vs top end.

The racers in the crowd know.
First time spectators??
No clue.

We need cameras around the course.
I know, that ship has sailed.

Best on board video i ever saw was, Mr Bill.
You could hear the motor (screaming its guts out!), see the tach (very rare) and see through the wind screen.

May have even been testing buy didnt matter.
He was driving the wheels off of it, around the outside!!!

Run that 30 sec clip, once an hr before the race, overhead to crowd, then hand a mic to somone that knew what the hell they were watching!

IMO, cannot involve motor co’s cuz we want rednecks in the stands arguing about Merc Vs, OMC, Yammi, etc.

If its just Merc against Merc, it will only be us.
Same as its always been.

Im building a V-6 OMC looper for a customer (when i get off my ass!) for the F-150 class of tunnel boat racing.

Pretty cool grass roots class.
Attempting at fairness amongst breeds.

I have for years been hoping the film crews would film near the water's surface, near the turn buoy and inside the race course. And get the perspective of a Tunnel Boat diving into the corner, and pulling G's, and then accelerating out of the corners.
Cornering is one of the premier achievements of Tunnel Outboards, and sets it apart from other motorsports, and needs to showcased on TV.

There was also a JPS 2 seater with Johnson V6 power. I think this is from Lago di Como.

The IOGP series was well run and had a good spectator following. Early on, River Race Augusta packed the river banks with paying spectators. I completely agree about the Mod-VP class. I can tell you for a fact that a big chunk of the people that attended those races came to watch that class. Brand warfare...between boat brands. People could relate to that.

The hottest single? That would be Mr. Bill at Bristol 1982. What he pulled off at that race was a true feat in the world of motorsports.

Not !00% sure why..but Roger Jenkins last F1-V8 race in Liege, Belgium 1984.. he raced a Hodges instead of a Burgess.
(I have been told there was a fall out between David Burgess and Roger and Roger did not like his new Hodges)
The first picture is from Liege and the second one from London when he announced his retirement and walked away without be part of the London GP 1984.

IMO, the OMC V-8 days were the best.

2nd would be IOGP.

But, V-8’s against V-8s and 2.4s against 2.4s.

I know theyve had multiple 2 seat boats too.

My vision is:

Take the two seat boat to Firebird Lake, now owned by Forest Lucas of Lucas Oil fame.

He is a huge fan of motorsport and has spent a ton supporting it.
His son Morgan, ran Top Fuel Dragsters.

Do a board room presentation then load him in the boat for a couple laps around his course.
Thats known as the closer.

6 to 8 races a yr, major metropolis areas, let him collect the marketing revenue.

Just sayin..

Oh yeah, and a race commentator, screaming in the PA, keeping fans on their feet!

I was wondering what was going on with Firebird lake. Cool idea the way they built it with the sloped wave cancelling strip down the middle. Why did they stop racing OPC there? They raced a lot there in the mid '70's.

I was watching this very close from start when Lucas Oil family spent millions of dollars to build a beautiful boat racing arena only a few miles from our Larina Ranch in Missouri.

Took my friends to https://www.lucasoilspeedway.com/ many times during the construction of "lake Lucas"
Bragging about this everywhere.."boat racing is going to be great again"..!!
This was finally it..our own boat racing arena.
All pictures by me.
My friend Wilbur was responsible for the build of this enormous man made lake.
We where at the Grand Opening, drag racing and F1 Tunnel boat racing.
Lucas Oil and others tried hard to promote boat racing in many forms but could not get it going.
Dirt cars/trucks and other forms of car racing is doing great..Boat racing is more or less no more at this fantastic boat racing arena.

Holme Pierrepont rowing lake outside Nottingham was the perfect place for tunnel boat racing.
1981 was my second year racing there in the UIM OE/F3 class and it was a major racing war with UK's great John Hill.
This is the start in one of four heats over the weekend.
#52 John Hill in his Burgess/Evinrude is already on the way..in this starting picture
I guess my #1 red Burgess/AKAI/Evinrude was a bit slow to get going but very fast at the end of the very long straight aways.
After two days of racing..(four heats) the Viking was on top after swimming in one heat.
Great memories and I am not sure who should get the picture credit.

Saturday November 5 2011..(10 years ago today)
Very powerful friends was visiting us..
In mid October 2011 Whiteman Air Force Base knocked on our door..they where very friendly and said our 200 acre ranch was perfect for them to use for military training purposes. I was very surprised but honored..
Of course you are more than welcome to use our place..but please promise do not drop any bombs..was my answer with a smile.
He also smiled and said of course not..
So early Saturday morning November fifth Whiteman Air Force Base landed two Black Hawk helicopters on our Larina Ranch.
Military trucks and people came by the entry gate.
A few Warthog military Aircrafts was circulating above our ranch.
Lots of military people was running around on our place all day.
Carina, me and Lucky was watching. I asked if I could take picture and the answer was yes.
A fantastic memory I am very proud of.
When they left late Saturday the man in charge asked if they could come back next year..
Of course was my answer.
He also said in a fun way..If you have any problems..call me..!!

Renato Molinari in his titanium and carbon fiber F1-V8 boat powered by a racing Evinrude V8.
Probably the "Hottest Single" ever.
The year is 1982.

This black #191 Molinari Jimbo drove in Drammen, Norway & Pittsburgh 1982 was the platform boat with the modifications that Renato used in his #165 Martini titanium boat.
Very short boat..only 17ft.
I can also add that Renato built his own mid section & gear case for the V8 in titanium.

Wow, very cool. Any idea of what if any weight savings there were? I have always wished I could have seen Renato and Billy go at it.

I can not tell you how much lighter Molinari's F1-V8 titanium boat was compare to his regular boats because I dont know..but I can tell you this..I was at every F1-V8 race Renato raced in Europe from the start in Brodenbach late June 1981.

First I am going to bring up Embassy GP in Bristol 1980..this is really when the biggest feud ever started between OMC & Mercury.
Next is Bristol 1982..and my take on what really happened..

Embassy GP, Bristol 1980
..was another big setback for Team Mercury and the T4 racing.

This was the headline after the race:
No Gold at Mercury’s Final Rally..
Evinrude/Molinari wins in Bristol 1980
Seebold breaks down in last lap forfeiting win to Molinari.

Billy Seebold was leading the OZ class with the big bore T4 ( I think 3.9 liter) broke down and #1 Renato Molinari ended up winning the race with the smaller 3 liter V6 looper fuel injection.

Bristol 1980 was also Team Mercury's last race for the T4 in the OZ class at that time.
I am 100% sure the reason for Team Mercury to pull the plug on the T4 racing in the middle of the race season was because the rumors was already out.. OMC was going to race the new F1-V8 in the OZ class 1981.
Team Mercury's new plan was instead of racing the OZ class..step down to the UIM ON class (max 2 liter) and call the ON class Formula One.
(Merc came back with a modified T4 in the OZ class 1984)

The third picture is the #7 Seebold/Merc T4 being towed back in Bristol 1980.
The fourth picture is Renato in his #1 winning boat

Last picture is OMC's advertising after the race. "Evinrude staying-power wins Embassy Grand Prix"
Pretty funny..!!

OMC's plan was t0 race the new F1-V8 3.5 liter engine in the OZ class world series with start in Como, Italy 1981.
Some factory delay problems..engines was not shipped in time for the Como race. All the OMC drivers used the V6 in Como.
(Mercury did not show up for the OZ class world series)

The next race in the world OZ class series was Brodenbach, Germany June 20/21.
(for some magic reason the OZ class world series was not invited to Bristol 1981)

https://www.screamandfly.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=496197&d=1636483140

There was six new F1-V8 engines in Brodenbach: Renato, Carlo Columbo (in brand new red Molinari V8 boats) Velden, Jenkins, Percival and Spalding in modified Velden V6 boats.

https://www.screamandfly.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=496201&d=1636483271
https://www.screamandfly.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=496200&d=1636483264

(Six more OZ class drivers was in Brodenbach with OMC V6 engines.A total of 12 boats)
As always Renato was better prepared and won the race.
A note..the ON class 2 liter was invited to race in Brodenbach but only 2 or 3 entries so the ON class was canceled by the organizer.
I was in Brodenbach this Swedish mid-summer weekend racing my brand new red Burgess/AKAI/Evinrude in the OE class.
A fantastic weekend to see the V8 engines race for the first time.

https://www.screamandfly.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=496198&d=1636483213

https://www.screamandfly.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=496199&d=1606925816

If I remember right it was 6 more OZ class races in the world series after Brodenbach.

Another magic thing happened 1981..The Paris 6 hours organization suddenly came out and said no more OZ class racing in Paris..Only ON 2 liter..funny how things go..!!..more here: https://svera.se/blogg/in-my-opinion-the-famous-paris-6-hour-race-died-already-1981/

Renato won the 1981 OZ class world series and his F1-V8 boat was superior Velden boats.
Velden was struggling to get his boats right for the big heavy 12 inch mid section V8. Jenkins worked with David Burgess to modify his Velden/Gordon Gin boat and David Burgess built Jenkins a brand new Burgess for the 1982 season.

April 1982..Now we are in Leon, Spain for the first race in the 1982 OZ class World Series.
Fourteen drivers with the OMC F1-V8 engines. Renato surprised everybody with his extremely nice brand new titanium Molinari/Martini he spent a ton of money to built with help of aircraft builders.
A very windy, rough-water race in Leon..Renato was in the lead with his new #165 Martini/titanium boat..when he suddenly turned to the beach..saving the boat from sinking. I was told some glue issues in the titanium boat was the reason.
#9 Jenkins won in his brand new Burgess/Carlsberg/Evinrude V8..
Cees Van Der Velden was still struggling to get all his boats dialed in.
Yes..I was racing my #1 OE class red Burgess/AKAI/Evinrude in Leon.

Now we are in Bristol early June 1982..
I just picked up my brand new white OE class Burgess and rigged it at Burgess place just in time for Bristol.
I was like many other drivers not a big fan of racing in Bristol. Very narrow race course with concrete walls and left and right turns.
Some F1-V8 drivers did not enter the race for that reason. The 12 inch mid section was way to top heavy for Bristol.
I remember Tom Percival was now driving a Hodges boat instead of his Velden.
Bill Seebold - Team Mercury was now suddenly interested in racing the OZ class in Bristol again..but not with a big bore 3.9 liter T4..Instead the much lighter V6 2 liter bored with one or two pistons oversized..(You must be over 2 liter in the OZ class)
As we all know Mr. Bill is a great driver and for some reason loved Bristol..
The fact is..Renato took the lead and was leading with close to half a lap over everybody else in the OZ class when technical issues forced him to retire from the race.

https://www.screamandfly.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=496202&d=1636483284

You can clearly see this in the video. Around 5 minutes in Renato is out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9zIjxUjrpo

Velden and drivers with Velden boats still did not have the right setup for the top heavy V8.
Roger Jenkins had similar issues and I think his transom broke..maybe his powertrim.
Tom Percival in his Hodges was the only one trying really hard after Renato was out.
The fact is Mr. Bill won and outsmarted the rest by using the lighter smaller V6 instead of the heavier T-4.

After Bristol Mercury did not race anymore OZ class races for a few years.Well..in 1984 Seebold was back in London GP for the OZ class with a T-4..I get to that next..

Thanks @Noah Burns (https://www.screamandfly.com/member.php?u=105383) ..Yes it was fun to meet you and a lot of other S&F friends in Havasu.

I am going to continue with the F1-V8 story and how I remember Mercury's take on not racing the OZ class..Instead going their own way and race the 2 liter class at different locations.

When I finally got the opportunity to go F1-V8 racing 1983 I made the decision to run my own team with ASPEN as the main sponsor.
I was offered to drive one of the Martini boats for Renato..that would have been the easiest way to do it but as a "control freak" I did not want to be in hand of others.
Many great races in the F1-V8 series 1983..Stockholm GP, Minneapolis & Pittsburgh was enormous with tons of spectators.
The only place I did see a couple of Merc's racing with us was Pittsburgh..but they did not do any good.
The first picture is from Expressen..the largest news paper at that time. (Sports front page)
The Stockholm GP 1983 was probably one of the best boat races ever in Northern Europe.
It was run Saturday evening between 6:PM to 9:PM and live on Sports TV and hundreds of thousands spectators downtown Stockholm..

More coming soon..!!

Well..thanks for asking..here is my story..click the link for more pictures.

https://svera.se/blogg/the-race-of-champions-at-the-miami-marine-stadium-1975-by-bill-muncey/

My dream to be part of the Race of Champions at the MIAMI MARINE STADIUM

When I was back in Sweden late August 1975 after the big race in Italy I received a letter from USA.
I could not wait to open it, and it was from Bill Muncey and an entry form for the Race of Champions
at the Miami Marine Stadium.
If I remember right there was 15 SE Cats rigged with Evinrude 75 hp engines.
The Billy Seebold built boats was prepared the same way and the plan was to find the best driver in the world.
This was it for me, my big dream to travel to the United States and Race..!!
I filled out the entry form with my racing resume and photos.
I was 100% sure to be part of this dream race but after a few weeks I received a new letter from
Bill Muncey´s race of Champions, with disastrous news.
I did not qualify, you had to be a World Champ and there was no World Championship race in the
UIM – SE class back then.
I was now 3 times European/Continental Champion, but not good enough.
I asked Evinrude in Sweden and OMC to help me and they tried, but the answer was still no.
At that time I felt like the whole world was coming to an end, but life went on…………..
..and the Race…without me..!!
There must be a way for me to make $10,000.00 in boat racing..Well..it happen a year later..!!

The above 'Press Release' says 15 identical OE hulls. There were actually 17 SE hulls there, as there were 2 additional back-up hulls and they were needed after (2) collided during the first heat of qualifying.
Bill Seebold told us that he ended up making about 40 SE hulls over the years.
I know Jimbo ended up with one of the Race of Champions hulls and turned it into a MOD 50 boat.
I had a Seebold SE hull but I don't think mine was one of the ROC hulls because mine had a very different sponson shape.

Lars what was your impression and the sensation you felt, when you first drove a V8 powered F1 tunnel at WOT speed? Was it very noticeable in the cockpit, the difference between the V6 power and the V8 upgrade?

Thanks @Noah Burns (https://www.screamandfly.com/member.php?u=105383) ..Yes it was fun to meet you and a lot of other S&F friends in Havasu.

I am going to continue with the F1-V8 story...

I was wrong..!!..

In 2022 the Smithsonian is opening an exhibit titled "Nation of Speed".

I hope boat racing exhibits are represented in the Nation of Speed.
Are will boat racing strike out again in the bigger arenas.

Maybe some influential people in the boat racing fraternity, will contact the Smithsonian. And volunteer their race boats or suggestions.

Thanks for asking Lake X Kid,
I did a lot of testing back home outside Stockholm, Sweden in the early spring 1983 on my own.
I got the hang of it pretty fast and made up the same course for testing as the first race in Como, Italy 1983.
Improved my time and felt pretty good driving the top heavy Burgess. (The turns was the hardest part to get use to)
The surprise started at the race..lake Como was really rough water/windy and 20 other wild drivers around you.
Took me a few races to get use to everything.
Did run in to some technical issues in the first half of the season.
The Stockholm GP 1983 was very good to me.. One of the fastest boats but lost the rear boat cowling in the first heat..!!
Always something..
The first picture is me testing back home..OMC Sweden took a lot of pictures.
The second picture is from Stockholm GP 1983 when I lost the boat rear cowling. (Alan Nimmo let me use his Molinari rear boat cowling)
Have pictures of that.

Lars, can you please comment on boat length through the eras of F-1 V-8?

I was under the impression that the first F-1 V-8’s went on short, 2.4 based Champ boats that proved to be way over powered and grew from there.

No?

No?

First..No..the early V8 boats was not based on Champ boats..Champ boats was a US only class. F1 V8 racing was first run in Europe 1981 in the UIM OZ class. (First US race was late 1982 in Pittsburgh)
Most Velden V8 boats 1981 was V6 boats from the UIM OZ class.
1981 Molinari was the only one with purpose built new boats built for the V8. Renato's boats was short..around 17ft..
1982 Burgess designed a new boat for the V8, Jenkins was the only one using a Burgess 1982.
My 1983 Burgess V8 boat was similar to Rogers but with a bit more lift..but I do not remember the length.
Slowly the V8 boats was built longer.
1985 with the 6 inch mid section the lift-width and balance was more important than length.

In 1978 OMC had 4 different racing V6 engines..
The 2 liter looper for the UIM ON class, in the UIM OZ class..the 2.4 liter/ 2.6 liter cross-flow..(the 2.6 replaced the 2.4) and the new 3 liter V6 looper Renato raced in Chasewater and crashed out bad..

This is from Chasewater 1978. Renato Molinari was leading the OZ class race with his new #20 Molinari/Evinrude CCC 3 liter looper with fuel injection when something went wrong with his brakes. A very bad crash and Renato was one lucky man walking away from this crash.

Kind of a PR exercise for the Bluebird organization.........take a look at the wing angle on the bow. Story was she was instructed to just drive straight ahead thru the kilo and not to touch the power trim buttons for any reason. Her 122 mph record wasn't even above some of the lap averages the V8 drivers set. Merit Stromeroy would be amused at this "record".

I was part of this great race 11 times..first time was 1973, my last race was 1986 when my brother Lennart and I won the very popular F-3 class with a Burgess/Evinrude CC..

Lars, that driver's seat looks more like a heavy chair out my living room. We both know that in smaller classes like SE and MOD 50/OE every ounce we could save was important to us.

Well..Renato always used the very best stuff for his boats. My guess is Roberto asked Renato to install a more comfortable seat in his boat.
The early F1-V8 boats without safety cells was extremely light..If I remember right my new Burgess 1983 was about the same weight empty
as my Evinrude V8 engine..!!

Sadly we lost Roberto Saviero in a testing accident back home at the Po river in Italy late 1984.
R.I.P my friend.

To be part of the UIM F1 series you must be approved by UIM to be able to race.
The last year I had a UIM Super-Licence was 1991.
I love the Swedish license #1

After the F1-V8 boat was in the water his team took the "cover" off.
Put it back on before lifting the boat out of the water..

20 years of boat racing with great memories and many disappointments..

Thinking back..this is still the one..!!

After a few years in the sport, a big possibility opened up in the winter 1972/73. Hans Holmen who worked for Evinrude Sweden called me and said that Huzells and Evinrude has picked me and one other Swede to get the new Evinrude 65 SS ( for free) that was designed to be a winner in the SE class.
One condition, I have to buy a new SE Cat from Italy. There was two choices, Abbate or Clerici and I picked Clerici without really a good reason.
We where late to order, but Clerici promise to have the boat ready in June that summer, but that was OK because OMC was late with the new 65 SS also.
I friend of mine lent me and older Schultze cat and I used my stock Evinrude 65 hp. At the Swedish Championship in Torsby, Varmland, I ended up around fifth.
Me and my dad Roland took the Coffee delivery truck and headed to Cremona, Italy with a big bag full of Lire (Italian Cash) to pick up the new very good looking cat.
Back to Sweden to install the brand new 65 SS Evinrude, that had just arrived.
There was one big problem, this engine was using left hand props, and there was not many around. I found one 2 blade prop used for the Mercury BP’s, but not very fast at testing.
The big race of the year was the European Championship in Lappeenranta Finland and OMC’s Racing boss Jim Wagner had a lay over in Stockholm, on his way to Finland with Roger Jenkins #56 Clerici/Evinrude boat.
I got the opportunity to test factory driver Roger Jenkins propellers in Sweden and my boat was flying.
This was a 3 blade cleaver left hand rotation and Jim Wagner promised me that if I showed up in Finland he was going to let me use Roger Jenkins spare prop.
Me, Holmen and friend Curre took the ferry to Finland and when we arrived at the race there was 45 boats with Mercury, Carniti, Konigs, Evinrude and Johnson engines, but Roger Jenkins refused to let me borrow any of his/OMC’s propellers.
I was very disappointed and was walking around in the pit, when I ran in to Tor Smith Ingebrittsen from Norway. He had an older home built boat, and he showed me his prop that looked like the one Jenkins used. We made a deal and exchanged props with a handshake.
There was no time for testing and when they dropped the green flag I was flying through the field and after a few laps I lead the race and pulled away. I won the heat with half a lap, and everybody went crazy regarding my prop.
Many drivers offered my new friend from Norway lots of money for his prop, that he lent me but he was cool and said it belongs to Lars.
Next heat the Italian drivers was trying to run me over in the start, and later pushed me up on one of the turning buoys and I was disqualified and had some damage to the boat but we fixed that overnight.
I do not remember the third heat, but I had to win the last one (fourth), and I did.
I was now declared the winner and the new 1973 European Champion, and Jim Wagner was forced to come over to my boat and congratulate me.
Lars and his friends had the biggest after race party they have ever seen in Lappeenranta.
(Roger Jenkins left early for the airport)

This was the beginning of my professional boat racing carrier and my Outboard Business success.
Thanks to everybody helping me.

When do they change to the Merc 4 strokes Lars?

Well..I am not the right person to ask that question....but here is the rumors I have heard..
The current race boat in UIM F1 can not be used for the new top heavy Merc 4 stroke V8 APX 360
A wider, larger different designed boat is the only way to do it.
That boat does not fit in the shipping containers..
Next issue is the new 4 stroke V8 engine is not as fast as the current V6 on a total lap time..new rules to ban the 2 stroke must be enforced.
Extremely high cost to the teams already struggling with sponsorship.
The last two races in Portugal was not organized by the normal F1 promotor..!!
There is no race calendar as of today for next years UIM F1..only a rumor of a race in Saudi Arabia.
I could be wrong about all this but its an answer..:)

They need to drop the powerhead down to sit on top of the gearcase like the rotaries did 50 yrs. ago. Charlies bucket patent has long since expired. Or they could lay it down and pretend it's an outboard like Jackie did.

lars strom

Well..OMC designed and built the 6 inch mid section for the racing V8 early 1985..lowering the power-head 6 inches made a hug difference.
Way better boat handling..compare to the top heavy 12 inch mid section.
To bad OMC did not have the 6 inch mid section for Bristol 1982..!!..:)

If I understand it correct..the new Merc 4 stroke racing V8 must have a 12 inch mid section because its a gearbox between the powerhead/gearcase.
Good luck with that..!!

PS..Dont mix up US F1 with UIM F1..in the US F1 the plan is to use a V6 4 stroke APX 200..UIM F1 the V8 4 stroke APX 360

First picture is from the OMC parts book of the 6 inch mid section
Second is the F1-V8 with the 6 inch mid section
Third is the top heavy 12 inch F1-V8 used the first couple of years.

The rotary bucket had about 2" between the bottom of the powerhead and the gearcase. It's CG was actually lower the V-4 and the V-6. If you look at the old pictures you see the top of the rotary on the boat was lower than the top of V-6. You would have thought Strang and the boys would have learned from the rotary (10 yrs earlier) and used the shorter mid from the start.

Well..the 6 inch mid-section was not possible with the carburetor power-head..Only with the fuel injection.

Another fact is..
Mercury is the only outboard in racing and have been so for many years.
I remember when Mercury was criticizing OMC for the F1-V8 racing saying things like..who wants to sponsor a series with only one manufacturer..!!

Here we are..20+ years later..Mercury still in a similar situation..no sponsorship for the teams..(only one outboard factory)
US F1 NGK series & Tim Seebold is working extremely hard to promote the sport..and build a future.
I really wish him well/great.

The much faster UIM F1 series based in the Middle East are having the same problems..No major sponsors..
The two Middle Eastern multi boat teams are dominating with state sponsorship.
Yesterday in Portugal only 14 boats started..some big names like Chiappe & Erik Stark was missing..(Erik from no sponsor)
The Swede Jonas did the unthinkable and got the gold..I think it was karma from when he lost the championship last time (2019) No racing 2020
The UIM F2..(similar to US F1 Optimax 200XS) have a lot of up to date boats & drivers but not many races.
Very hard to get races going in Europe for many reasons..Economy & permits..(the green people are a problem)

Tunnel-boat racing all over the world..long before Covid are struggling because its not a very popular sport.

Brunswick..by far the largest marine corporation in the world could make tunnel-boat racing great again by stepping up with sponsorship from all the marine companies they own..
Think about Sea Ray, Boston Whaler, Freedom Boat Club, Intrepid Boats, Mercury Marine, Lowe, Swedish Uttern Boats, Bayliner, Attwood, Princecraft, Harris Pontoons, Lund and many more..
The problem is..Brunswick does not want to do so..
We all know why....!!

In road based motor sport the old classes seem to be growing everywhere....
Is that because manufacturers dont have and cant get control?
IMHO a custom 2ltr to 2.5 etec v6 would be the best package for F1 and mostly emission compliant.

Ah yes..........the Golden Meteor..........I think the civilian version was 90HP.........the GT cowling had scallops that paralleled the cylinder banks. That meant the lower pan and mid section die castings were different. You would have thought that OMC engineering leadership would have made them common? It's probably an indicator that there still was "2 camps" at OMC in the 60s. Expensive difference. As a kid, I thought the Golden Meteor was like the Saturn V rocket.......a giant! Twenty years later and the V8 made the Meteor look like a kicker motor.

Next fight was Johnnie Sanders, kept him behind me for a long time but Johnnie got me in the last turn.:smiletest:

Thanks for asking. Well..Friday night around 7PM we got some bad weather. Heavy rain/wind and tornado warning around the lake area.
No damage and the storm traveled east and did heavy damage in western Illinois, Kentucky and TN.
Yesterday we went to a Christmas party and had some fun..:)

That mid section does not look like a Mod 50? It looks like a SST45 or 45SS mid?
Can a Mod 50 powerhead be bolted to a SST45 mid? I wouldn't think a SST45 gearcase would last too long powered by a Mod 50 engine? Maybe a kilo but not lap racing.

The mid was a one off I was told.
2cyl and 3 cyl powerhead bolt surfaces are completely different

It was a modified short shaft 3 cyl. mid section used 1975..(The 45 SS mid section came many years later)
I used a similar 3 cyl. powerhead in a factory OE class boat 1975.
More about that here:..https://svera.se/blogg/racing-historier/lars-mega-crash-at-the-omc-factory-1975/

Yes..it's Jimbo..he told me the record story.

Roger Jenkins won the 1975 UIM OE class World title with a similar power-head on a racing mid section. He drove a Johnson and I drove the Evinrude.
The World Championship race was run in Aix-les-Bains, France.
I was still struggling after my big crash..Roger won pretty easy over Renato and Bob Hering racing the Merc 3 cylinders.

OMC did have a APBA Mod 50/UIM OE class racing mid section/gearcase 1975.

Roger Jenkins raced a Johnson and I the Evinrude..here is a link for more:..https://svera.se/blogg/uim-oe-class-racing-1975/

Regarding the success for the UIM SE class Merc 650 XS in Europe...I get to that later...
