Paris 6 hours 1982.....

Well..this was the second year of what I call "the Merc 2 liter series" running the show and nothing was the classic 6 hour race anymore.
Thinking back I first thought it was 2 X 1.5 hour races..but reading some magazine info..it was more like 3 x 1 hour heat races.
I did not like anything with the new way of running the classic 6 hour race..but "the Merc 2 liter series" was more or less in charge.
Only the ON, OE and the SE class was invited..(no inboards)

My white AKAI/Burgess/Evinrude #90 was extremely ready for any thing in Paris 1982. Only one driver was needed and he was ready.
One more picture of the start below..

First is a picture of my OE class #90 Burgess/Evinrude CC below and I like to add we picked up a new powerhead at the Paris airport the day before the race. Sent to me by Ric McChesney/Jim Nerstrom at OMC, Waukegan.
Thank you very much.

Here is the Entry list for the UIM SE and OE class. Normally it was only the OE class..(the SE class raced in the OE class)
Funny part is the UIM OE class #90 is missing in the Entry list..

There was a full page write up on Keith Whittle's record in one of BRP's short lived magazine's they produced. So I called to ask questions he know nothing about the write up so I sent him a copy. BRP take credit like you are doing something and really they did nothing but send him a program for the emm and that probably was no suppost to have happened.

If I remember correct BRP refuse to help Keith Whittle to reprogram the emm for better performance..
He got very disappointed and gave up.

Paris 6 Hours 1982 was not a 6 hour race..instead three heat races on a shorter course around the island with the Statue of Liberty.
Here is #90..the first heat winner in the OE class.
A can not remember why my entry was not in the program.

The #754 Molinari boat above is a similar boat to the first boat built by Renato after he left Mercury for big OMC late 1976. Came to the USA just before Parker Enduro 1977. Renato used Bob Hering as his co-pilot and also Bob's USA race #457. This was also Renato's first race as an Evinrude driver and Bob & Renato took the overall victory in Parker 1977..👍

Interesting mix.......#45 Bob Hering / O Gradys potato chips Hering hull. #94 Steve DeSousa EZ Loader trailers Seebold hull. As this "mix" continued it was rumored that the fuel paid for by OMC in the series was adjusted for a lower octane rating. The V8s could run on it just fine but the fuel injected Merc 2 liter champ motors would burn pistons. Kinda forced the Merc guys to bring their own fuel supplies.

Well..stick to facts now please.."Nine Mercury 2.4 litre V6 powered drivers and one Johnson V6 powered driver had joined the fray in the hope of earning a slice of the $50,000 prize money"

A few weeks later 1984 Merc used the 3.9 liter V6 and the twin powered V6 (wizard)..but for now we stay in Minneapolis

Looking at all the pictures from Minneapolis F1-V8 race 1984 and also looking/reading the full Powerboat & Waterskiing report from both Minneapolis & Pittsburgh with the headline..

"The Bud Light Formula One Grand Prix Series of six American events was already well under way, when Europeans joined their American competitors in Minneapolis for the second year running"
..the report is coming later and you can clearly read a lot interesting "engine stuff"

One more fact Mr WaterZebra..

This is from Powerboat Magazine after the Sacramento F1-V8 race 1984..
As you can clearly see Seebold and the Merc drivers used the 142 Cubic inch powerhead..(2.4 liter)
So I am sticking with my fact and I think you should say..I am sorry..

Nja..the wing in front of a tunnelboat can only be "fixed" according to the UIM rules. Impossible to get a better overall lap time with the wing. I tried both with my F3 and F1 Burgess..Always faster over one lap without wing.

Well..maybe but that would only work in one direction on the race course..the wing must be fixed and not changed by the driver.
I still believe it was more for getting attention at the races.
See..Roger Jenkins did not use a wing on his F1-V8 Hodges 1984.

It seems the F1 boat builders agree the front wing is "pretty useless".

However Unlimited Hydroplanes use a Canard Wing which they activate up & down for optimal bow attitude.
UH need it because they do not have stern power-trim angle of attack adjustment, like the F1 boats.

A better picture of the front #10 Hodges - Tom Percival in Stockholm GP 1984
I did lots of testing with a similar front wing for my #8 Burgess F1-V8 and its pretty useless in my opinion..but good for your sponsors name..!!

Absolutely correct Lake X Kid
with my "wing"tunnel-boat experience..you could maybe set the front wing for down force in one direction..but in circuit racing you turn around and the wing is killing the speed on the way back.
A perfect balanced tunnel boat is way better and the power trim is the answer..

The 1984 F1-V8 World Champ Renato Molinari never used a wing that year.
His #18 Molinari/Martini/Evinrude V8 was balanced perfect.

This is Renato in 1982 and he did use a wing on his #165 titanium boat..not sure why but later ditch the boat when he did not win the World title 1982. (Renato also used wooden boats without a wing 1982)

Tim Butts experimented w/fixed wings on his Pro/Alky OB 3 point Aerowing hydros.

Was before my time but he told me he could totally change the attitude of the boat but did nothing for lap times.

Of interest though, those boats had no power trim and what made his hydros “Aerowings” was the leading of the deck, between the sponsons was radiused like the leading edge of an airplane wing.

He mounted his wings aft, from the outer chines, at an angle up to the top of the transom.
He did it to lift the transom and fly the boat, which he said it did.
Said he could fly it all the way around the course.

He said the power used to create the aerodynamic lift was greater than the speed increased from the reduction in fluid-dynamic drag though.

Funny part though was, he said the APBA banned it as they did not allow “aerodynamic lifting devices”.
He asked them, then how does a hydroplane work and it is allowed

As I recall back then, the Unlimited Hydros had to be a minimum of 28 Feet in length.

And if Renato's boat is 22 Feet long, then we can see how the rear wing got the boat to qualified length.

Brain did your dad, add the rear wing in USA? And how did he get involved with the Team?

Micke Frodé goes from a SAAB inboard/paddlewheel to an Evinrude V6 outboard..

https://www.screamandfly.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=502878&d=1648303889

The Z-4 cat below build by Mikael Frodé around 1976 was first designed for a 2 liter SAAB 4 cylinder inboard..
Well..on the back of the transom Mikeal installed a paddle wheel…!!!!!
The paddle wheel was very good but SAAB in Sweden could not deliver the 240 horses as promised..only around 110 hp..!!
A very disappointed Mikael took the SAAB engine out and replaced the very advanced/effective paddle wheel with a brand new 1977 Evinrude..2.4 liter V-6.. 200 hp outboard.
With the right power the cat was flying and Mikael scored his first overall win in the famous Roslagsloppet the same year..
Here is a picture and some reading in Swedish..

Or is that duct tape on his helmet to keep the water spray from entering into the inside of his helmet's visor.

My friend Rick's Hydra-sport 25 WA is very good riding boat..the twin Yamaha had some major issues..
After 700 hours both power-heads needed to be replaced..the Harmonic Balancer was the reason for the power-heads to go bad.
Rick purchased the boat used and nobody told him about the problem when he was under warranty.
He ended up paying for the two power-heads and later a gear case also.

Its behind him now and "Life is Good" is a great boat.

:iagree: That's a memory, for sure!, Lars.

The engine broke off while driving through the corner, shortly after Barry's incident. My boat hooked sharply to the left, launching the boat straight into and overtop of one of those massive orange turn-pins. When it splashed down and all went quiet, it was one of those "What the hell happened? " moments.. "Could have been worse!", I thought.

So then, a few minutes later, I had a first-hand, on-the-water view of Arthur Mostert heading down the straight, entering the turn and losing his engine. That was scary .. seeing a V8 fly through the air - and then the boat skip/slid sideways across the water heading toward the break-wall. It was amazing to watch it stop just meters away, and see Arthur climb safely from his cockpit.

Naturally the race was called after that.

Thanks to Pasi Haavisto for taking and sharing those photographs. Amazing to see decades later - and a good reminder that luck was with us, and those spectators standing on the wall.

- Mark

Wow.. sounds like that tow-boat guy had a bad day too..

.. and as you've reported on before, that issue didn't end there. Bertil was extremely fortunate to have survived his crash through an aluminum safety boat during practice in Minneapolis. On board were several people who likely resigned immediately from that volunteer job!

I would have thought the boat’s transom would have been the weak link, not the V8 engines mid-section. With all that engine torque and vibration, the boat’s wooden transom prevailed.

I saw Freddy Miles in his Milesmaster come to shore in England, with a ripped-out transom. And the engine with the help of the steering cables, did not sink to the bottom Lake Windermere.

It was the early 6 inch mid sections when they came out 1985 who broke.. Was replaced fast by OMC with better design/material.

Well the 6 inch mid section was possible because at the same time OMC developed the fuel injection. (1985)
A carb power-head was not possible to use for the 6 inch mid section, but you could change the carb power-head to fuel injection.
If you look close at this picture you can see there is not enough space for a carb power=head. (Lower part of the front)
You can also see pretty good at this picture how short the 6 inch mid section is..(light grey casting)
Again, it was the early 6 inch mid sections when they came out 1985 who broke (Stockholm GP & Minneapolis).. Was replaced fast by OMC with better design/material.

So the injected motor had a horn with the throttle body in the middle (like newer stuff nowadays) allowing the motor to be lower?

That 6 inch mid-section looks like cast aluminum. And if there is some porosity in the metal after the casting process, then those air gaps will be a weak link. Or the thickness of the casting might not have been thick enough.

Some very interesting safety cell facts..
@Rotary John (https://www.screamandfly.com/member.php?u=48164)

In the first F1-V8 race in Munich 1985 there was FIVE Evinrude/Johnson powered safety cell boats. (maybe 6..dont remember if Rick Frost's new Velden was safety cell or not)
First time ever a UIM F1 race included safety cell racing.

OMC, Pro One, Hodges and Velden spent lots of money to make this possible.

The first UIM F1 race (1985) was run in Germany and was very successful and Bob Spalding, UK won the race in his #11 Hodges/Evinrude F1-V8 with a safety cell.

OMC F1-V8 racing by Charlie Strang

USF1 United States Formula One

The when, where, who and why of the V-8 racing circuit will all be found in the following story.

When we at OMC were developing a V-8 “fishing motor”, circa 1980, we decided to build a racing version of it to replace our Wankel outboards which had been barred from most European races.

Since there were few places to race a 3-1/2 liter outboard in the USA at that time (other than enduros) we decided to race them primarily in Europe. In UIM, the 3-1/2 liters put the V-8 into class OZ (unlimited displacement). At a meeting in Europe the UIM decided OZ would henceforth be known as Formula One. In 1981 the John Player tobacco company of England sponsored the John Player World Championship series for Formula One. There were 10 V-8s running there in 1981, plus a number of Merc V-6 engines.

In the fall of 1982 Bob Spalding realized that the V-8s were running faster in competition than the Class X outboard hydro record—so he ran a Kilo on Lake Windermere in his tunnel boat at 139.66 mph. Not long after, Rick Frost—also of England—ran a Kilo in his F-1 tunnel boat at 144.16.

In those days tunnel boat design had not kept up with the available power and we had 4 deaths in 4 months. This led to the development of the safety cockpit—financially sponsored by both OMC and Mercury—which did a fantastic job of reducing risk.

During 1985 OMC’s European operation had a problem with a race promoter who spent ridiculous sums on F-1—about 3.2 million in one summer! As a result, I pulled the plug on F-1 in Europe for 1986.

This incident, plus all we had spent on racing in the factory battles of the 1970s and early 1980s, convinced me we were not getting our money’s worth out of the sport—with top-notch factory teams holding great races in remote locations—and the publicity was zilch.

We then decided to concentrate on racing the V-8s in the USA—where most large outboards were sold—and to try to fund it with sponsor money. In other words, to use other companies’ money to promote our product through racing.

We hired the top sports promotion company in the USA—or maybe the world—to find sponsors for outboard racing. Four months and $600,000 in fees later they told us that outboard racing was of no interest to the public and sponsorship was not to be had.

We decided to try it anyway, following where possible the example set by car racing. OMC’s VP for Marketing, Ron Ingram, and I decided on a USA Formula One circuit with the following points in mind:

1. We would have a series of 6 to 8 races in the USA, open to drivers from all over the world.
2. It would be an F-1 series with the only limitation being that the engines must be available to anyone on the open market—to avoid the expensive and promotionally useless factory competition of the past. I think we set the required number of engines produced at 50. (This led to an interesting and even amusing lawsuit with Mercury.)
3. Our races would only be held at metropolitan locations with good press facilities.
4. The race would always be held in conjunction with existing major waterfront shows or events to insure a maximum crowd on race days.
5. We would have large prize purses, never before seen in boat racing, to excite the media—and the teams.
We then met with representatives of ABC, NBC and CBS to determine the ideal format. The networks designed a one-hour format for ideal TV coverage. This was the source of the 45 minute feature event—still used today at times.

We found a great series sponsor in Champion Spark Plug who regularly brought their distributors and dealers to the races and who also promoted the F-1 races in their ads. OMC also put much money into each race to make it a top-notch event worthy of media attention.

If I remember rightly, we started the US F-1 series in 1986—with over $600,000 in prize money for 7 races. We had plenty of European teams and plenty of US entrants. Probably the top event each year was Pittsburgh—where the police had a real job keeping the huge crowds in safe viewing areas.

The US F-1 series went on for about 4 years with all the top US and European F-1 drivers involved. There were always a few Mercs in the field, but only Bill Seebold was ever competitive—particularly on the shorter courses where the big V-8 boats had a bit more difficulty on the turns. The speeds were high—on the 1-1/2 mile course at Beaumont, Texas, Ben Robertson set a lap speed record of 141.33 mph. They were great races.

We thought it was a great series—as did the teams and the boating press—but the public interest did not warrant the cost. The TV networks finally told us that the F-1 events were great—but that boat racing simply could not draw enough attention to create adequate advertising income for the networks. As I recall, they commented that car racing could attract huge followings because, at that time, about 150 million Americans had cars and could relate to them—while only about 10 million Americans had boats.

At any rate, it became very clear that what was probably the best outboard racing circuit of all time could not justify its cost in terms of promotion, publicity and sales.

So – in 1990 I pulled the plug on the OMC F-1 circuit and we went to putting the money into grass-roots racing by producing the 2, 3 and 4 cylinder engines for OPC and sponsoring activity for those classes.

Now you know why I smile sadly when I hear a would-be promoter telling how he will make millions by turning some boat-racing class into the “next NASCAR”!

The V-8 Johnsons and Evinrudes are long gone. About all that remains on the record books is Bob Wartinger’s 176.586 mph speed record of 1989—with a V-8 on a three-point hydro.

So who did all this? As I recall, from the technical side, Jim Nerstrom handled the racing version of the V-8 in OMC Marine Engineering, where Edgar Rose was OMC’s VP. Gary Garbrecht and Les Calhoun did a great deal of development work and boat testing at Gary’s Second Effort operation in Florida. Jack Leek, OMC’s race boss had a finger in everything every where.

Bob DeGrenier was the guy who actually set up and ran the events. OMC Marketing guy, Barry Caris, oversaw OMC’s PR and promotional activity and co-ordinated the race setup with DeGrenier.

Lots of issues to figure out to get the new safety cell ready for the 1985 UIM F1-V8 series.
Chris Hodges did a fantastic job develop his safety cell for his 2 boat team with Evinrude power.
Cees Van Der Velden worked extremely hard to get most of his new boats ready with safety cells for the first UIM F1 race including boats with the new safety.
Renato Molinari refused to get involved making safety cells but did a few later..so at the first race in Munich, Germany 1985..Team Molinari/Nordica did not use safety cells.

If there was a race for the first UIM F1 safety cell..the F1-V8 race late May 1985 in Munich was the start..

First picture is Arthur Mostert in his #2 Velden/Johnson..You can see a new type of racing jacket was used by him.

Second picture is the Munich line up for the race.

Third picture is the winner of the race..#11

#11 Team Percival/Hodges/Evinrude V8. The sponsor for the Percival/Hodges team was OMC/Pro One...You can clearly see Pro One's logo on the winning boat. OMC made it possible for Chris Hodges to develop and race his safety cell. (end of story)
Velden won with many more of his boats using the new safety cell.

Team Percival/Hodges with Evinrude V8 power and Pro One as the sponsor.
Pro One was hired by OMC to organize UIM F1 races before the 1985 season.
They did extremely good but spent way to much money.
The 3 year deal with OMC ended after the first season (1985) ..Pro One spent the money for three years the first year.

- Mark

For you OMC enthusiasts out there.
Here is an Evinrude marketing piece and manual featuring a new Switzer design. This is a 1978 GL-21, and it was designed to handle the new V6 outboards.

This photo shoot was on the Fox River/chain of lakes area. The fastest GL-21 that I’m aware of was owned and driven by Ed Tweed. He had it rigged with a 235hp and ran 94mph. Too fast for me! Ed lived down by the McHenry dam and my dad would take us down there all the time as he and Ed would would make tweaks, engine height adjustments, change props etc as they made spreed run after speed run trying to dial it in.

I believe this is my dad, Bob Switzer running the boat for OMC and the photo shoot. They had a lot of fun doing what they loved to do.

Yes, I did sell a few 2.6 XP 1984 & 1985. One I installed on a Fjordling 18 and the Fjordling was flying..The 2.6 XP was way more powerful than a regular 235.

If I remember correct the first year the 2.6 XP came out (late 1983) it was without VRO..The second year I think the 2.6 XP used the VRO

The XP had square'd off ports, the 235 they were just round holes. The XP had the good tight 638 heads (although not as tight as the CCC heads but they were also small bore heads) and I think the power packs were unlimited from the factory but some 235's had those. The extra power was mostly from the smoother ports and higher compression.

If I recall the XP had the half circle scalloped piston skirt and matching cyl wall cut-out also. Although I never found that to help much but it all adds up.

Lars (or anyone else on this thread) , what is your opinion on why BRP has not tried to sell the Evinrude name and/or IP (designs etc.) related to the Etec? Ater 2 years it does not seem the market is any more friendly to 2 stroke motors or another brand of 4 stroke motors (as they had hoped) so why not sell it? Why are they just sitting on it?

Well..a very good question...only one person have the correct answer..his name is Jose Boisjoli..President and Chief Executive Officer of BRP.
Everything else is just guessing or speculations..!!
I tried for 5 years to get Jose to answer one of many text/email and phone-calls I sent him..without any success..

You really like stirring it with the Brits! But lets see now, how many championships has hambone lost while driving a dominant or at least fully capable car? Three by my count. The drivers who can win championships without always having the superior car are the real champs.

Well..in my opinion the very best F1 driver ever was Ayrton Senna. He could drive a car like nobody else and understood to stay out of telling the world his political opinion..The driver of the 44 car..not so much..
Today I really don't have a favorite driver..but love to see Ferrari back in the winners circle.
The 33 / 1 car driver is probably the one I support the most.

April 30 1975 I started the craziest boat race of them all.
One day later we where in the Rouen 24 hours winner’s circle..

(This was my first race as an Evinrude factory driver for OMC 1975)

The racing season in Europe normally starts with the Rouen 24 Hours, but I was invited to South Africa earlier 1975 and drove the famous BP 200..(PB 200 story here)..https://svera.se/blogg/racing-historier/1975-2/
I was not crazy about being part of the Rouen race but it was part of my contract with OMC
I flew to OMC in Belgium a week before the race to help out rigging the boat.
Important for me to have power trim buttons and some other things my way.
The rules said three drivers per boat and OMC recommended using two OMC test drivers who where my size.
Two SE class Clerici boats was prepared at the OMC factory. One for me and one for Roger Jenkins.
Roger was a fun man to hang out with..strong personality and Roger was in racing to win..but so was I.
We installed head lights and other “funny things” on the boat. Racing non stop for 24 hours means driving at night in the darkness and the commercial barge traffic was in business 24/7.

When we got there, it was a lot of boats and most of them were thick fiberglass cats run by local French people.
The next surprise was that the race was run clockwise
around the island!!!!
I was not used to right hand turns but raced and won the 2-hour of Duvnäsviken, Sweden the year before.. that was my only experience with right turns in boat racing.
As usual in France were all info in French only, and I understood nothing of what was said at the driver’s meeting, which lasted over an hour.
Paul Kalb..the new racing boss for Europe did not understand anything either but told me that I was responsible for the entire race planning.
Paul wanted me to start the race and hopefully drive the last hours to finish the race.

My plan was 2-hour shifts because lots of incidents happen in the pit.
The Clerici boat turned poorly when heavy but to many stops with 1.5 hour shifts.

We were out testing a number of times at practice..the waves from the commercial barge traffic was bad bad..but one side of the island the water was little bit smoother.
Well remember that famous Leif “Honken” Holmqvist of Sweden drove a V-bottom boat in the SD class and he came and asked me about the crazy water conditions.
His Volvo Penta powered V-bottom behaved strangely on the rough side of the island.

The start was sometime during the middle of the day and lots of boats took off at the same time. I got a great start and was one of the lead boats but on the other side of the island..all the heavy fiberglass cats came flying by in the extremely rough water.
Wow, I needed to slow down and save the equipment for the last hour instead of try to lead in the beginning of the race. Next thing in my head was..I am pretty stupid to be part of this 24 hour race.
Time for cruise control, we refueled and changed drivers a few times in daylight before it got dark, cold and rainy…!!
One of my shifts in the middle of the night went well .. but the next one like 4 a clock in the morning began with a flying experience from a big wave that I could not see on the back of the island.
I landed on top of one another race boat..the driver of that boat was OK but his boat sank..
that was good for me because I could get back to the pit .. where we took the boat out of the water..
Repaired the damage and replaced the gearcase/ propeller and then we went back on the water to race further into the darkness…!!
At dawn we were a few laps behind Jenkins and the other SE class leaders.
Jenkins now disappeared from the race..his time for trouble and had to spend sometime on the trailer for repair.
Now there was a chance for us to win, so I drove like a mad man for the last hours of the race.
A Rouen 24 Hours SE class victory was now reality..extremely fun and a perfect start as a factory pilot for Evinrude.
After the race we return to the OMC Bruges to rig a new Burgess boat for the OE/Formula 3 World Championship race in Aix-les-Bains also France.

Lars, Watermark (Mark Rotharmel) was one of the hosts on PowerBoat Television for about 20 years and I believe started on episode #1 back in about 1990. I was lucky enough to work on PowerBoat Television as well for about 5 years and worked and travelled with Mark many many times.
Great times !!!!

Very cool! "Hand made gears" on the counter rotation motor. That must have been really tedious with helical cut gears! :D

That no 4 boat the Cougar was James Beards own boat in 1972 it was the best Cougar circuit boat they ever built it would have been a perfect Paris 6hr boat with a bit deeper tunnel i wish i had bought it.

Sorry, I do not recall that one. I always loved those 800DR engines. They were towers of power. I think those power heads were the tallest of the inline 6 outboards or maybe that was because I was a bit smaller back in those days....

Found this digging through old boxes in the back of a closet. The 70s were not the best for fashion and hair styles.
I missed getting Johnson technician of the year by 1 point. The winner and I had to go through 2 different tie-breaker tests because we were so close in all the judging categories.

Noah Cooper purchased this 1986 31CC cuddy with twin 3.6 V8 Evinrude with second effort gear cases.
The boat was featured on all the magazine covers for Clayton Kirby fishing tournaments and also appeared in Evinrude magazine ads. Noah recalls running his boat on Cape Cod and nothing could keep up!
