Power steering on a boat and motor that small? We used to use bungee cord steering compensators. Once you had the tension adjusted correctly you could steer one handed very easily.

Three Rivers Regatta in Pittsburgh 1982.
This race was the first F1-V8 event in the U.S. and I was there watching.
I have never seen so many spectators and was told over 300,000..!!
The event was a great success and at the end of the weekend Renato Molinari took the big check to the bank Monday morning.
I went back to Europe and after a long meeting with George Lamy at OMC we had a deal for me to race the F1-V8 world series 1983 including the two U.S. races. (Minneapolis and Pittsburgh)

Evinrude E-TEC G2 Formula 1 – V8 4.5 liter
I strongly believe performance and racing outboards is good to promote and sell more outboards.
The new Evinrude E-TEC G2 is already a great success. Lots of power and best in fuel economy. On top of that the cleanest outboard in the world.
I wish Evinrude took my advice and started a performance division for us that love speed and competition.
After some computer help i came up with this.
The outstanding Evinrude E-TEC G2 Formula One V8.
We added two more cylinders to the current G2 V6 and here it is..
A 4.5 liter very powerful V8, fuel efficient and extremely clean outboard.
Is it going to be reality for racing..probably not but dreaming is what keep many people alive..
A production 400+ HP Evinrude E-TEC G2 4.5 liter V8 is also a must to keep up with Mercury and Yamaha.

This is the very expensive aluminum F1-V8 boat Renato built for the 1982 season. It sank at the first race in Leon, Spain 1982 but Renato won the next race in Como, Italy.
OMC did not like the expensive way of building boats and asked Renato to go back the wood boats for the 1983 season.

I have hundreds of OMC racing pictures and my plan is to slowly tell all I know about OMC racing here.

Yes you are correct 2us70. They did not have much lift. Less than one inch from front of the tunnel to rear. Sometimes closer to half an inch.

In the beginning the builders were all over the place on aero. When they got it wrong it was spectacular. It seems like it took a while for the builders to understand that these boats were really wings with their surfaces slightly out of alignment.

Lasse Strom is doing propeller testing in his #8 Burgess/Aspen/Evinrude F1-V8
The picture is from Tollare outside Stockholm, Sweden 1983.
This Burgess F1 boat built by David Burgess was brutal..
The boat it self was built from strong thin plywood, and the boat cowling was thin fiberglass. Empty boat before rigging was around 210 kg/463 lbs
Batteries, fuel tank, steering and seat around 50 kg/110 lbs
A total of 260 kg/573 lbs.
The Evinrude F1-V8 two stroke 3.5 liter 450 hp purpose built race engine including power trim/lift pump and prop. was around 250 kg / 551 lbs.
Complete ready to race without fuel 510 kg / 960 lbs.
There was none what so ever safety just a brutal race boat with a top speed over 140 MPH / 225 km/h.

One more picture from Auronzo, Italy 1976. The ON World Championship race.
Velden was by far the fastest boat with his OMC 2 liter looper V6 and won the first heat over Renato.
I was there watching and here is my comment....
"This was also the first and only time I did see Renato Molinari "play dirty tricks", well not really Renato but his second boat driven by Zoppi I think his name was.
Zoppi sank Cees VD Velden in his #11 Velden /Johnson V-6 on "purpose" by running in to his boat just in front of us at the far end of the race course.
Velden sank and Molinari ended up winning both OE and ON. Well..not really in a proper way in my opinion"..
Even the Italians, who are normally very patriotic, booed at the prize giving when Renato Molinari went to collect his trophies.

Paris 6 Hours
In my opinion the best boat race ever..
I was part of this great race 11 times..first time was 1973….last race was 1986 when my brother Lennart and I won F-3 with a Burgess/Evinrude CC..
When you tell people about boat racing in Sweden, Italy, USA, England, South Africa etc.
they maybe listening..but when you tell them you raced 6 hours on the river Seine..
Next to the Eiffel tower, in the center of Paris.. they always want to know more..

I heard one popular driver say it was the only motor/class that ever scared him.
I also remember thinking in that era, everyone was trying to come to terms w/the power/potential of that motor. As far as what type/size hull to build, where to put the weight etc.
Looking at the old pixs from the day I remember thinking it looked like they started at 17/18' and were at 20/21' at the end.
I have a friend that has one on a sub 500 lb STV and Ive ridden in the back of that boat a couple of times and I think "brutal" is an accurate term.

Thanks STEVERINO,
My first Paris 6 hours was 1973 and at that time the race was run without barges but I raced (and won) Rouen 24 Hours 1975 with barges running during the race. Even night time.
Here is a story I did 10 years ago about that.
Our SE class Victory in the Rouen 24 hours 1975
This was my first race as an Evinrude factory driver for OMC 1975
The racing season in Europe normally starts with the Rouen 24 Hours, but I was invited to South Africa earlier 1975 and drove the famous BP 200..(PB 200 story here)..http://svera.se/blogg/racing-historier/1975-2/
I was not crazy about being part of the Rouen race but it was part of my contract with OMC
I flew to OMC in Belgium a week before the race to help out rigging the boat.
Important for me to have power trim buttons and some other things my way.
The rules said three drivers per boat and OMC recommended using two OMC test drivers who where my size.
Two SE class Clerici boats was prepared at the OMC factory. One for me and one for Roger Jenkins.
Roger was a fun man to hang out with..strong personality and Roger was in racing to win..but so was I.
We installed head lights and other “funny things” on the boat. Racing non stop for 24 hours means driving at night in the darkness and the commercial barge traffic
was in business 24/7.
When we got there, it was a lot of boats and most of them were thick fiberglass cats run by local French people.
The next surprise was that the race was run clockwise
around the island!!!!
I was not used to right hand turns but raced and won the 2-hour of Duvnäsviken, Sweden the year before.. that was my only experience with right turns in boat racing.
As usual in France were all info in French only, and I understood nothing of what was said at the driver’s meeting, which lasted over an hour.
Paul Kalb..the new racing boss for Europe did not understand anything either but told me that I was responsible for the entire race planning.
Paul wanted me to start the race and hopefully drive the last hours to finish the race.
My plan was 2-hour shifts because lots of incidents happen in the pit.
The Clerici boat turned poorly when heavy but to many stops with 1.5 hour shifts.
We were out testing a number of times at practice..the waves from the commercial barge traffic was bad bad..but one side of the island the water was little bit smoother.
Well remember that famous Leif “Honken” Holmqvist of Sweden drove a V-bottom boat in the SD class and he came and asked me about the crazy water conditions.
His Volvo Penta powered V-bottom behaved strangely on the rough side of the island.
The start was sometime during the middle of the day and lots of boats took off at the same time. I got a great start and was one of the lead boats but on the other side of the island..all the heavy fiberglass cats came flying by in the extremely rough water.
Wow, I needed to slow down and save the equipment for the last hour instead of try to lead in the beginning of the race. Next thing in my head was..I am pretty stupid to be part of this 24 hour race.
Time for cruise control, we refueled and changed drivers a few times in daylight before it got dark, cold and rainy…!!
One of my shifts in the middle of the night went well .. but the next one like 4 a clock in the morning began with a flying experience from a big wave that I could not see on the back of the island.
I landed on top of one another race boat..the driver of that boat was OK but his boat sank..
that was good for me because I could get back to the pit .. where we took the boat out of the water..
Repaired the damage and replaced the gearcase/ propeller and then we went back on the water to race further into the darkness…!!
At dawn we were a few laps behind Jenkins and the other SE class leaders.
Jenkins now disappeared from the race..his time for trouble and had to spend sometime on the trailer for repair.
Now there was a chance for us to win, so I drove like a mad man for the last hours of the race.
A Rouen 24 Hours SE class victory was now reality..extremely fun and a perfect start as a factory pilot for Evinrude.
After the race we return to the OMC Bruges to rig a new Burgess boat for the OE/Formula 3 World Championship race in Aix-les-Bains also France.

Won the race..not even the two F3 boats powered by the 6 cylinder Konig could keep up with my hot Evinrude engine. Well..some rooster tail spray from my boat slowed them down in the turns..
The party with my OMC friends that made the win possible turned out pretty crazy..
I still remember what OMC´s..Ric McChesney and Jim Nerstrom did to me..
Easy to smile now..but not 6 a clock in the morning..the day after.
Very good memories..

Nottingham 1981
The Winners are..F1-Molinari (OZ) – F2 Seebold (ON) – F3 Strom (OE)
The John Player GP at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham.. UK was one of my favorite race sites.
Tight but nice and straight..two point race course..1981 was my second time racing here so my home work was done the right way finally..

Back in the good old days when OMC was promoting Evinrude Outboards. You could proudly wear your World Champion Evinrude Racing Jackets and hats.
Even go to a NASCAR race and see a race car leading Daytona 500 with the Evinrude logo.
To bad those days are gone.

In the beginning of 1998 I got a phone call from the OMC headquarter in Waukegan, Illinois. David Jones the President of OMC was asking for me.
I sent a short resume to OMC and received the attached letter a few weeks later.
My appointment to meet with David Jones was set to June 16 1998.
Carina and I took our American Eagle motorhome with matching trailer to Waukegan and the OMC headquarter. The security guard was informed and we must be one of few being allowed to park inside the fence in front of OMC and camp out. We stayed there a few days.
The meeting with the President David Jones was extremely interesting. At that time not many people know OMC was struggling big time.
Mr. Jones hired me as a consultant.
Mainly to figure out a way to make OMC do better in Europe. I flew to Norway for meetings a few times and traveled to many dealers and asked their opinion about OMC. Most dealers was still very optimistic about OMC and I put together a long plan for OMC what they needed to do/what was wrong in Northern Europe.
My mistake was to give my plan to the person responsible for sales outside the US and not directly to David Jones.
A major conflict was now in full force because he did not like my report.
Pretty soon I learned the big corporation personal conflict and I did not need that.
I called David Jones and told him I am out.
I already know at that time there was no way to save OMC the way it was run.
I also got contacted by the Roger Penske group. Penske was interested buying OMC. I told them what I know and was on the list if a deal was possible to do.
Penske backed out for many reasons and that was sad. I strongly believe Penske could have saved OMC.
Yes, it is Ric McChesney and Carina in the first picture.

Agreed on Penske. I'm a fan.
I remember when he tried to buy the failing Saturn car company.
He said between union contracts and EPA fees, no thanks
He he would have been the perfect savior and they would, now have a Hi Perf division.

OZ Class racing St. Louis 1974. A mix of Merc V6, OMC V6 and 2 Rotary’s..
Very interesting outboard racing history from 1974. The OZ class World Championship race in St. Louis, MO had 13 boats ready to race. 5 with Merc V6 T-3 power, 2 OMC Rotary’s, 2 Johnson V6 Stingers and 4 Evinrude V6 Super Stranglers.
Barry Woods in his Scotti boat powered by the Evinrude Rotary was by far the fastest boat. Won the first two heats but barrel-rolled in the third when he was leading handing the victory to Bob Hering.
Now we all understand better why Team Mercury successfully was lobbing so hard to ban the OZ class in the Paris 6 hour race later same year..!!

Regular OMC carbs with something attached in the front.
I remember seeing the powerheads all the time in Brugge and at the races.
Back then you did not have a smartphone with camera.
The racing cross-flow V6 powerhead was pretty close to the production V6 cross-flow powerhead
introduced 1976, but 2.448 liter instead of 2.0 liter.

Mercury T-4 racing vs OMC V-8 racing..Cincinnati GP 1984…
After a summer-long legal battle, Mercury and OMC reached an out-of-court settlement a month before the Cincinnati GP which allowed the Merc T-4s to compete against the V-8s on a one race, experimental basis.
Here is the full story..if you don’t want the read the full Powerboat story I can make it pretty short.
Mercury lost big time using the T-4 and the Wizard..(with twin Merc V6 powerheads)
Ben Robertson won in his #57 Burgess/Johnson V8. Barry Woods second in his #35 Molinari/Evinrude V8
After the race one of the OMC’s corporate executives couldn’t help but mutter under his breath after watching
the T-4’s self-destruct:
“They (Mercury) have been suing us all summer” he said in hushed tones, ” do you think we could bring a case against them for fraud?”

These stories don't come close to telling what really happened at this race. First, it was not the first meeting of OMC V-6/ Rotaries with the Merc V-6. Paris '73, Windemere '73. No mention of the brakes on the Merc boats, no mention of nitrous oxide on the OMC boats, no mention that qualifying time trials were required without prior knowledge to OMC. Molinari stopped on the race course per Garbrecht orders and magicly restarted as Woods came around in the lead. He continued to run Woods wide in the turns till Woods had enough and ran over Molinari leavin prop marks across his right sponson. Woods won the 3 heat, but was disqualified by Homer; a Mercury dealer; as judge. It was readily apparent the rotaries were the class of the race and Mercury had used their "crazy European drivers" to block and take out the OMC guys. Intercepted Mercury radio transmissions verified this.

Well, the interesting thing with the Rotary's in St. Louis, MO 1974 was the OZ class.
Some people say they did not run the OZ class in the USA. The OZ class is unlimited over 2 liter. Does not matter how you measure the Rotary, the engine is always legal in the OZ class.
The Rotary's in Paris was 1974 after the St. Louis race.
Yes I remember all the argument regarding nitrous oxide. In the US and Europe.
Was involved in the OE World 1977 in Brodenbach, Germany when OMC could not use the nitrous oxide. OMC did not race and filed a complain to UIM.

The OMC 3 liter V6 looper with fuel injection was introduced very late 1977 for the 1978 race season. The Johnson model was called RS and the Evinrude CCC.
OMC did not sell this engine, only a few drivers mainly in Europe raced the engine in the OZ class up to it was replaced by the V8 OZ class engine mid summer 1981 in Brodenbach, Germany.
The OZ class V8 was sold to any approved race driver.
Renato Molinari won the first ever F1-V8 race in Germany 1981

I have a few very good memories around the OMC V6 3 liter looper race engine. (CCC & RS)
One is when I was with Jack Leek in Stuart, Florida in the spring of 1979. Jimbo was testing a carburetor model and he was testing different jets.
The reason was Merc took OMC to court when Ron Anderson left Merc for OMC.
OMC could not use the fuel injection for a specific time. Don't remember exactly how long but it was very interesting sitting in a rescue boat with Jack Leek all day.
It was a perfect time to get to know Jack. He was very friendly and I am pretty sure he was sick and tired after a day with me asking tons of questions.

Yesterday I received a different looking mail from Stafford UK (England)
Could not wait to open up.
Back in the memory lane again.
The start of the London F1-V8 race 1983. My boat is the #8 Burgess/Aspen/ Evinrude V8.
This was a tough race for me..I crashed bad in the Liege, Belgium GP two weeks earlier and did spend some time at the local hospital.
David worked hard to repair the badly damaged race boat in time for the London GP.

Cees van der Veldens Marlboro boats 1975. If you look close they are rigged with different Jonson V6 2 liter engines. Long shaft, short shaft. I think two is the looper and the rest cross-flow.
