If if only I could post piccies the right way up.
Just in case nobody knows what it is ————it’s one of the first wings I ever saw.
I always believed that James Beard built his VOLARE after seeing this!

Jackie - The way that I have to do it probably would not work on your system, but briefly, this is what I have to do. I copy your picture and paste it on a letter to myself and send it to myself. Then when I open the picture, I save it to my "saved from mail" folder. Then I find it in that folder and left click on it and then right click on it, which will give me a drop down menu. In the drop down menu I click "edit" which will allow me to rotate the picture and increase it in size if needed. Then I save it. Then when I go back to S & F, I import that revised picture. There you have it.

Bingo, well it worked that time Bob———— buggered if I know if it was luck or good instructions. May have to try it a few times before I start crowing.
Bill Allen ( I think) and I set off from Oshkosh to Havasu in a pick up truck with an extra fifty gallon Mercury tank strapped to the back. This was to reduce fuel stops along the way.
Ridgell left twenty minutes before we did, driving alone and in an old truck that carried the fuel rig for the team. We finally caught up with him at an Indian Trading Post somewhere in Arizona. some 2,500 miles down the road, we were running 95—100 most the time ! He bought that knitted jacket, so of course I had to buy one too. ———- My wife wore that damn coat for the next twenty years!

So sorry to hear about Kay’s accident Pilgrim———poor old Micks going through the wringer yet again.
She always said she’d know when it was time to hang up her gloves ! Don’t need reminding of the horrendous cost of hospital fees after a powerboat accident. Been there
Incredible to think Keikhaefer paid all the medical and insurance for all his drivers all the time

they are not current F1 boats so no floatation bag and I dont think they use full time air either and old fashion lid that just falls off under any force.
it may well of been done like that years ago but why risk that now?

Pilgrim———-it’s a case of damned if you do, damned if you don’t!
I have not kept up with F1 racing since I walked away from it 25 years ago———I do not know the current rules and regs. Maybe they run “vintage F1 or something like that.
Several years ago Mark informed me that a current F1 ———rigged and ready to take the motor was in the region of $100~000 US ( one hundred thousand dollars).
Jesus wept———unless you got Sony or ICI sponsor ship there’s no way your racing F1 any more, so maybe some bright spark thought of a way to keep the old rigs running?
Im afraid boat racers were always totally fearless and illogical, with the occasional screw loose.
im sure you must have heard the old adage “ TIS BETTER TO HAVE LOVED AND LOST——-THAN NEVER TO HAVE LOVED AT ALL”———————-same thing with boat racing.

Day started off well——— Quick trip to Bognor Regis Hospital——no problem!
Then over to Chichester Hospital———today’s the day I find out just what the hells wrong with me and what the conclusions are.——-wrong——— They gave me my driving license back.
Im more confused than I’ve ever been. Only good news I can tell you is, I feel a lot better.
So, on the whole it’s not been a bad day.
Intend tohave seven hours in the shop tomorrow——— tell you if I make it.
jackiewilson
11-28-2017, 08:19 AM
Already had four hours in the shop !
Got a little problem here Pilgrim———-would appear Kay Marshall threw her boat out of the park and has left Mick a bit of an expensive dilemma————-how to get her from a hospital in Thailand——-back home to Australia ! Now I’ve had this dilemma before and have learned one thing from the experience.
There is no cheap way out of this————- it’s going to cost an arm and a leg with a mortgage thrown in to boot, just to get her home. That does not take into account the doctors, surgeons and ambulance fees!
How about I make one of my better “concepts” and stick it up for auction ( the get Kay Home trophy )
This-is where you come in Pilgrim————— do I make a tunnel boat or an offshore ?
I can tell you that more people want an offshore concept than a circuit.
You might have to call in Little Kevin West to help you on this———- he’s a lousy hairdresser, but he’s got a lovely wife in ROZ.
Keep me in the loop as they say these days——— we just used to day “Catch you later”.

50 50 re offshore versus tunnel boat interest in OZ I would guess ( ski racing bigger than both)
How would you feel if you loaned someone a boat and the steering failed and hurt the driver....

Ok, I got a “Lucas” offshore mounted on glass———ready to ship. A fairly respectable, not yet finished pickle———another two days and it’ll be done . Your choice.
Trying to get Roy Cooper to do the same thing here
Sorry Pilgrim———- if someone borrowed a boat of mine, then it’s their job to make sure it’s fit to race. You do pre flight check——-its done throughout the world in every motorised sport. Final check should be done by crew chief———then the pilot.
Kay is “ONE OF US”——-

Well Pilgrim, I have to tell you———-you are noticeable by your absence. By that, I gather you got nowhere in getting hold of Kevin West, or anyone else who’s willing to take on the task of auctioning off one or two concepts to get Kay Marshall Home.
Not to worry, I got one or two cogs turning———- let’s see what happens in this neck of the woods once folk get their rear in gear!
Never did get back in the shop yesterday afternoon———— spirit was willing, but the body wasn’t.
Same thing today——— after three hours in the morning——- had nothing left for the afternoon.
Managed to get the tunnel mounted and half finish the motor. Will complete the job in the morning!
Once it’s done, take your pick, then we’ll get the ball rolling.

Kevin West has been around since roman times————especially F1 boats. Enthusiastic to the point of stupidity, but his hearts in the right place. I’ll get hold of him and send him the concept
i think Noel Scott has a trophy that could be Auctioned off in the USA!
Ill get my daughters to arrange another one for sale over here in England———— time to get the ball rolling and see if we can get Kay Marshall Home after her F1 accident in Thailand.

Second thoughts Pilgrim———-Fi boat racing in Singapore has always been well supported——— methinks you could raise a tidy sum if I sent you an F1 boat. Not telling you how to suck eggs, but you seem to be the dogs cajones on a puter——- maybe you could set up a web site or something like that?

Well Midlife that’s going to make things interesting————in truth Kay has been around a long time.
Ive watched her race worldwide including Australia. She and husband Mick are a well respected pair in the powerboat world.
Seemed like she needed a chuck——— all I’ve done is offered a hand.
So if it’s ok, I’ll just go ahead and strew a few “concepts” around the globe and see which way the cookie crumbles.
My sainted mother used to tell me——- you can’t get blood out of a stone! ———but again, she told me I never took any notice of what she said anyway.
When I started FONDA ——— Parkinson came up with the idea. Of putting 5 percent of the total prize money into a drivers accident and injury fund. Problem was, we never had an accident in the first two years, the fund was hucking Fuge————upshot of this was———- drivers had a meeting and voted to cash it all in and share the cash out amongst themselves.. Stupid or what ?
To this day, I have never met a “SMART” powerboat driver——— if he was smart, he never would have stepped into a boat.

BUT, the last 2 F1 races left a large bill the Gov had to fix as 2 crooks involved and then the Nations Cup event the promoter did a runner in the middle of it and left lots of bills ( she was involved in previous scam)
I am too scared to say F1 in Singapore. Singapore no longer UIM member
Self funded racing with no promoter is where I am trying to restart racing.
I can see lots of Racers in OZ are giving to the GO fund me including me.

ok Pilgrim———- I hear you. FONDA raced many years in Singapore with tremendous success———- never had a problem. Mind you, we never tried to shaft them either. Must have been after I walked away———- that was when Velden and SAN Germano and the UIM took over the series.

Well, we are up and running————Roy Cooper has offered to set up a website here in England.
Still waiting to hear From Kevin West in Oz———- he’s always been slow.Still, it is the middle of the night right now and Kev is usually in a coma until lunchtime!
Might have to get Mark to help in the USA——— hate to do that to him ——- he has more on his hands than anybody I know at the minute.
Looks like Singapore is a no go area————- Kay raced there many times, but if the government was screwed by F1, small wonder they don’t want to know.
If Duggan was still alive, I could have tried the Emirates————long time since I knew anybody out there though.
If anyone out there has any bright ideas, give me a call !

Had a terrible day———- we have two year old Lizzie staying with us for three days——— her mum is in the Philippines recruiting nurses for the NHS———— dad is away in Hull sorting windows out on a cross channel ferry!
Everything in the gardens lovely————that is until Jilly falls and breaks her right leg ! Called the ambulance that just happened to have three paramedics on board, didn’t take them long to determine she was a hospital job. That was 3:30 pm.——- it’s now 18;00 hrs?
Lifes been a-box of chocolates for the last four hours——— Lizzie is wrapped up in bed and fast asleep.
Me myself finally sat down with a cold beer——- as I said, it’s been a hell of a day, considering I had been put out to pasture many years ago ! The OLD adage comes to mind———A MANS GOT TO DO WHAT A MANS GOT TO DO ———must be fifty years since I changed a nappy( diaper).
Jillys being kept in hospital overnight———— life’s never dull in our house.

Damn good idea Johnno——- to be honest, I need a dram urgently, turned 9 pm and Liz decided it was time to shed her pyjamas and play with her dollies, why did she decide tonight was going to be the stay awake night.
News from the hospital isn't good——— After x rays they found she’s broken her right Femur, just below the hip joint. Don’t ask me what this means, operation or lengthy stay in hospital seems the obvious, but what the heck do I know?
Tomorrow looks like a good day to open the malt!

Peace reigns, Little Liz finally went to sleep, just hope it stays like that until morning! Truth is, I’m bushed, I need some serious slumberland time, so that’s me goe for today——- tune in tomorrow for a look at the everyday life of the wilson family.

Liz finally went to sleep at 10:45 pm———covered her up with the blanket and hoiked myself to bed.
Kepf the hearing aid in just in case she woke during the night———2am I took the damn thing out, it was whistling and squeezing like a banshee wailer. Luckily, Liz slept right through till 8:15am——-she only woke up when she heard me rattling the pots and pans for breakfast!
Jill was “Nil by mouth” until 5am this morning, when they informed her the operation would not be today. Will know more when I’ve seen her this afternoon.
Bloody good job I got my licence back this week or we would have been up sh-t creek ?
Lizzies mum and dad just collected her. All I have to do is clear up after the tornado !

just discarded my workshop clobber———-her majesty would not be too well pleased if I turned up to the hospital looking like I usually do on a weekday. Only last week she told me if I carried a tin cup in my hand,, and walked the streets of Chichester over the weekend with a placard round my neck saying “IMPOVERISHED BOAT RACER”, I would probably be able to take her up west for her dinner!

Many thanks Midlyfe —— Sunday morning and I’m just on my way to see her ! Last night , she needed a pee pee, nurse brings a bed pan———- thought to myself , Wrong !!!! Big mistake——— Jilly does not do “Bedpans”——— now if that had been me, instead of the nurse, I could now be wearing a bedpan as my Sunday hat.
Shes in bed with a busted femur——— but she still has to call the shots——— things have to be done Jilly’s way, so she calls for a cripple racer frame (with chrome wire spokes)——— hoikes herself onto the contraption and bowls herself to the douche room muttering———“it’s only pain”——— nurse looks at me and says. “I said you going to tell her or shall I?

How long before Jill can come home?
Just had a couple of hours with the boss——— things are looking too good!
if she had her way she would be here now Bob ————-realistically, I would say Wednesday.
She’s already got the fidgets———issuing orders and instructions from her hospital bed————-bit like Al Capone running the mob from his cell, but I shall deny I ever said that.
apparently she’s raced the zimmer down the ward five times already————-going to be hard to keep out of the firing line once she’s back.
May have to rig up a hammock in the workshop and discard the hearing aid !
jackiewilson
12-03-2017, 04:02 PM
Oh yes, she’s definitely on the mend————got my full list of instructions——— hairbrush, mirror, make up and razor, sargeant Jill is barking out the orders.
Better make the most of my last days of freedom——— got a feeling the days of me holding the TV control are nearly over.
jackiewilson
12-04-2017, 04:46 PM
Oh Craperootle , she’s back !
Need to clear the dishes———-vacuum the whole house——— empty the dishwasher———-take out the garbage———- fill the cats bowl———make the bed. Told the driver to go round the block a couple of times.
Just not cricket sending her home without warning.
Try and fill you in later in the week———- they just unloaded the Zimmer and the cripple crapper, excreta about To hit the whirlygig.
jackiewilson
12-06-2017, 06:51 AM
Right, I tell you now, in all honesty————when and if, your wife ever breaks a leg, for God’s sake, not under any circumstances, allow her to come home with a cripple cart or a Zimmer frame! Should have told the ambulance driver to drop her off at Lands End—- or the outer Hebrides.
Jilly has a pain threshold of, on a scale of 1—-10, 157. She dumps all the pain onto me.
48 hours on and I still haven’t had five minutes to myself————the dot-dot is out of bounds.
If she had a private nurse or a care taker they would have been out of here after two hours, wild horses and £500 an hour would not have kept them !
Tried to buy myself a couple of hours at the local clock shop——— he was sold out. Went on line but I couldn’t buy even ten minutes——-At any price ! Seems your allowance of 24 hours a day is all you get and should be enough——— trouble is, nobody told her majesty!
Was nowhere near this tired after the Paris Six Hours or the Parker Seven.
Am seriously looking to trade her in for a newer model.
She herself is sound asleep———- it won’t last———if you don’t hear from me ,not to worry, I’m otherwise engaged!

Her Royal Highness Decided that using the cripple crapper was beneath her, (so to speak)———— flat refused to discuss the activity———-it goes back to the hospital———- brand new and untouched by human hand !
comes a time in every mans life when there’s only one thing that will do the job. That time came yesterday around 7:00pm.
Most of you will have heard of “ROTORY JOHN” SHELDON—————(think he had something to do with a particular thorn in Mercury’s flank———-the Wankel)——-to cut to the chase, I made him a concept of a Johnson Rotory, he asked me how much I wanted for it? ——I told him he didn’t have enough money to buy it ! And so it went on ———- about a month ago, I received a very exotic parcel delivered by FedEx. Upon opening the said parcel, I was amazed and delighted to find a bottle of Delmore fifteen year old single malt whiskey.
I had decided to open it at Christmas——but yesterday, there were “Mitigating Circumstances”———-nothing else could have done the trick,
Johnno, I have to tell you, swear to God on a stack of bibles, and My sainted mothers life———the nectar I savoured out of the bottle with the silver stags head, was far and away, the best, and most exciting malt that ever crossed my lips———- and there’s been quite a few, including a tour of the Scottish highlands distilleries!
It was there when I needed it most———-thank you Johnno.

Never realised what a great troublefree and uncomplicated existence I had until somebody pissed all over it from a dizzy height in the summer of 2017.
I was as content as a chimp in a banana tree——— living in my own little cocoon, sheltered from the realities of life, trundling along in the Rolls Canardly in great comfort and style——-with a touch of “Panache” chucked in for good measure. Really thought I was strolling down the Ritz Road to retirement ————always had the shop if I got bored, nice garden with loungers and a Sunbrella——— Lexus to take me to wherever. Decent wine cellar and the greatest comfort of all—— her indoors——- her majesty——— the kitchen goddess———her who shall be obeyed at all times———- if I’m honest, she’s my greatest possession. Knock her out of the equation and the status quo gets completely out of kilter !

NO,NO,NO Johnno———you cannot say it’s a dark scotch as opposed to alight like “Ballantine” which is a cooking whusky.
Its like comparing a brass farthing to a Roman Eagle or a Spanish Dabloon or a Victorian Sovereign.
You caress the bottle —— which in itself is the work of a Scottish “Artiste”——— gaze in wonderment at the magnificent head of silver horns adorning the beast known as the monarch of the glen.
Gently remove the lead seal and discard, before softly turning the cork stopper, allowing the gentle taste bud teasing aromas to infuse the senses with the ancient craft of one of the finest distillers ever known on earth.
Savour the tantalising mystical scents that invade the mind and body——— herbs, spices, fruit and long forgotten flavours blend perfectly with the smoke, peat and oak, a hint of orange and maybe mint or rosemary, is that cocoa or chocolate that’s drifting about in there ——-
Then there’s the colour, where did that come from, was it the casks from Portugal that held port for twenty years? Or the French oak Brandy barrels ? Imagine the deepest golden brown of a 500 year old piece of furniture that was polished every day until you can see through the patina and you’re beginning to understand what you are holding?
Many years ago my friend Runo Cronström (an Admiral in the Swedish Navy), presented me with a pair of the most wonderful Swedish crystal whiskey glasses I have ever seen———— perfect companion for a perfect appellation.
No, tonight I did not allow myself to indulge in this most treasured brew.
Tomorrow maybe a different story——- one things for sure, It’s just for me !

Mornings are the worst when you got an angry female with a zimmer, hell bent on taking a shower in my cubicle—— because it’s better than the one she has in the bath. First thing is to alter the settings as it’s far too hot and she can’t understand why I use that temperature in the first place . Then it’s take the showerhead and rinse my back———make sure there’s no soap left——- dry my back——— you can stop that——- I can reach there myself .
Was a time when she enjoyed that sort of thing——-before she became EVA BRAUN.
Hospital visit this afternoon ———— with a bit of luck, they’ll keep her in for observation?

However, the Duchess does have her very own “Computer room”——- fully equipped with a cinema screen sized APPLEMAC, which is hers alone ———— she plays it like Paderewski on a piano, it also doubles as the “Art Room” and is where she does her painting.
Why on earth would she need to peruse my iPad Pro?

Been perusing the “Missing Marathons” thread——-that brought back memories I can tell you.
Loved marathon racing best———— I would travel halfway across the world to take part in one. Brought out ALL the boatracers——— the factories and their teams——— wealthy owners———ambitious amateurs——- cranks and crazies with stupid futuristic equipment that didn’t have a snowballs chance in hell———- yet they came, they gathered, they competed, they had fun!
my own view on a Marathon is ——- a long distance boat race over an extended period of time !
Pie, Elsinore 500 ————-Paris 6 Hours——— Berlin 6 Hours———- Amsterdam 3 Hours———- Milan 3 Hours——- Rouen 24 Hours——— Chasewater 24 Hours —— and the Chasewater 500. Parker and Havasu
Offshore had its own set of Marathons, Miami-Nassau——- Cowes Torquay——- , London Monte Carlo to mention just a few.
I don’t ever remember the bitching———-only the help and camaraderie that was always there ——hells teeth, I can remember selling the bedroom furniture to raise enough dinero to go to Paris one year.
Here I am today, fifty years on, remembering the most exciting times of my life——— along with some of the saddest memories.
First time I ever met Lynne and Billy Seebold was Havasu ‘69 —— he turned up in a black Caddi tugging a Jones Tunnel called “OLD BLUE” ——- think he’d just come back from honemooning in Mexico.
Parked next to him was Art Kennedy with a green Jones——- his dad was crew chief.
Renato and the Rasinis ( who I’d known for years) were there.
Guy in a Boston with a little motor and a lunch box (Cooney I think—— he finished the race) .
Close to one hundred boats started that race. That was the size of the field in most Marathons in those long ago days.
Yet here we are with more boats being produced than ever————-more guys (and girls) wanting to race than ever before and what do we have—————- I’ll tell you what we have, all over the world!!!
In circuit racing————- doesn’t matter which country or continent it’s happening———- the format is the same————- three or four heats, of three to ten laps.?
Offshore racing the same—————- bigger boats, bigger engines, more noise———- for every bit of ten minutes (if you’re lucky) —————— Super boats have as many as six at a time, with thousands of horsepower ————sometimes we have as many as two actually racing at the finish.
Key West is the classic example of this———— like a circus and fairground rolled into one——- great spectacle ! Pity the racing doesn’t reach the same standard of excellence,
Its chucking it down outside———— I had a full battery on the iPad ———- and I was generally pissed off at the world————- thought I might share it with you——— enjoy the rest of your weekend !

Isnt it great to know we were there at the very beginning Gene————- When I first read “SPEED N SPRAY “I knew I had to get to America somehow and get involved in all the stuff I only read about.
Vapour Trails and the very weird MISTER RICKIE———- Mouth of the South——- Walt Yarborough———— Sirois, Pruett, Rocky Aokl, Jim Hauenstien, The Kramer’s——Rolla, Scottie, Molinari, Seebold, Velden The Rasinis, Ridgell,Duckworth plus hundreds more that made up the history of powerboat racing.

So, the question begs—————— since the beginning of the annals of powerboating, there were “MARATHONS” —— where did they all go to? and why have we deteriorated to nothing but ten minutes heats in every class of the sport.
Surely it can’t be that motors are not reliable any more———- dammit, all you have to do, is keep em off the limit————- outboards and inboards with today’s technology should last forever.
Hells teeth———- I remember the claims the only reason the wankel broke was because the rotor wore out ———— but with today’s know how, it shouldn’t be any problem.
There you go Mercury———— if you want to make a name for yourself, simply make a reliable Rotory that lasts forever ?

As a race engine, i cant see a flaw.
In production use, it didnt have any great jump on piston engines ( produced more power for less weight) and just when it became reliable fuel consumption and emissions became an issue.

in the 80's lots of manufactures tried turbo'd small engines and the turbos didnt last, so how about blowers but not very fuel efficient.
2010+ we have lots of turbo or blower and some with both with lots of technical design changes in them.
Rotaries came out with points and carbs then years alter Mazda built the 787 and won LeMans
Ralph Sarich in OZ built his orbital engine but worked out the injection was the issue so invented that air blown injection.
He had then gone back and did small 3 cyl with computer oiling and fuel, over its lifetime it used less oil than a 4 stroke was when changing it.
Ford jumped in and built a few cars that had long term testing. They did everything better and cheaper but decided the public wouldnt drive a 2 stroke.
Merc are still using his injection system.

Old snowmobiles and Nortons posing as drones, in no way constitute Rotories as recognised.
Stop moving the goalposts here Johnno———- all I ask is a simple Rotory, that powers a car, bike, boat, aeroplane or crunchie bar, economically and lasts for more then five minutes without flying to bits. Never thought this was a big ask ?

My father worked at CW & so did Edgar Rose who left Merc had a non compete, went to CW before joining Charlie Strang at OMC. CW had the NA contract for the Wankel rights. Sold some rights to GMC for on the road use in cars & part to OMC for off road use, thus the snowmobile, outboards & never produced useage for the mini race cars that the Delorean brothers were involved with. We did build the cars for them for their amusement parks, each turn designed from a European F1 track, but we bought the wankels from Sachs their original supplier. When Jim Briggs & I went to visit the Deloreans in Michigan, they let us drive a couple of the cars, pretty sweet & fast. Found out after our Demo that they had the governors disconnected so that we would be impressed. We built them in our little plant in Manawa, WI. Project didn't last very long, the Delorean part went "belly up"!

There are more Rotary's out there than you think. It's just a crying shame nobody runs one of John's engines today as it must of been bloody impressive at the time, and would still be today. The "Norton" engines now copied and sold under numerous names still rack up a pretty good living for their companies but in very specialised and low volume applications. As much as I think the Merc V6 is one of the best engines ever, I still love working most days with these amazing little engines. I am not going to die rich but I'll have dirt under my fingernails and am that soaked in kerosene I'll burn for days.

John: slight correction. The GM agreement with CW had no use restrictions and had a non-share after sighing clause that caused the entire rotary club to fall apart. Prior to GM all info/ patents/ideas were sharable with all members without fees. CW gave away the store thinking GM would create the royalties that hadn't been seen previously. Their thinking Ford, AM. Motors; etc. would follow close behind GM and the need for OMC's potential would be small potatoes. Then the 1974 Iranian oil crises and fuel economy concerns. GM abandoned the rotary but the rest of the club had already fallen apart. I believe the OMC contract was for non-automotive, watercraft and recreational vehicles. Another interesting fact, OMC was the only US company to pay CW a royalty.

I would be very surprised if Norton are actually patenting anything or even still working on Rotary engines as their new V4 seems to be how they intend to move forward. Like I said before the name Norton seems to have become a catch all to describe several companies who are working on these engines. UAV Engines was born from the ashes of Norton to provide specialist engines to drone and aviation projects and several talented engineers who worked for Norton and UAV have pursued their own versions and developments for their own or other companies. Other companies somehow "inherited" the original Norton designs and produce very similar engines all based around a common architecture. As much as I would love to see a mainstream rotary engine in the marketplace, like an electric vehicle range extender if the likes of Mazda and Audi decide against it I fear that it will remain a very specialized low volume product.

Thank you the Techteam for clarification on the Rotory situation as it would appear today.
Norton only ever was a manufacturer of old fashioned hand built quality English motor cycles, but since it was sold on, or liquidated, pulverised and pasteurised, the tradename has been kicked from arsehole to breakfast time in association with various products including the wankel. Sometimes it’s in the form of a drone or a sludge pump. Whichever way you look at it, it’s a a far cry from a “Double Knocker”.
I remember seeing UAV filters and oil pumps on the outside of double decker buses with names like—— LEYLAND———AEC——— GUY AND ALBION. Although I can remember the driver and conductor who spun out tickets from a machine that rang a bell every time he twisted the handle, I most certainly do not remember UAV having a lot to do with motorcycles.
Amazing what can get lost in translation and transition———-like Norton ! Ok, so it was “inherited “—-

Five hundred is not a lot in Fleas, Bees and flying elephants with yellow toenails——— but I’m sure I don’t have to spell it out ,chapter and verse for you of my version of a Rotory prod line.
I got another Q for the team !
Our controversial and cunning friend named after a naughty feline——-“ Felix” the Rotory . was still a snotty nosed kid at the start of WW1, so can hardly be credited with the early aircraft motors that were called Rotories !
These in truth were probably “Radial engines” but nonetheless were called ROTORIES.
My problem is with Felix and his flawed basic design——— there is absolutely nothing about this engine to recommend it above any other basic engine, in any shape or form! End of.
Its no good quoting any single attribute, because it doesn’t come out top of the class in anything, an egg or a housebrick is a better design———- any engine in the world burns less fuel than a Rotory——- a banshee wailer is quiet by comparison———- sooooo we have determined it’s, noisy, heavy, thirsty.
breaks a lot.
There may only be three moving parts——- but the trick appears to be to keep them all moving at the same time before the Big Bang.
Cant help but think, that little bugger Felix gave us a conundrum in the shape of a Rotory to solve.

Came across an interesting stat whilst looking through the dot-dot.
Did you know that the Sopwith Camel with the Bentley nine cylinder radial, burned sixteen pints (2 gallons) of oil every twenty gallons of fuel used ?
Smoky old bastards weren’t they——— if the tree huggers had been around the Somme in 1916 Baron Von Klinkenbottom never would have got off the ground.
Only governments could afford such devices as aeroplanes——- bit like today really——- what’s the cost of each present day fighter ——- five ? Six ? Billion ? Obsolete in five years.

Now, you may or you may not know, a long time Aussie friend of mine Kay Marshall had the misfortune to flip a tunnel boat whilst in the lead of a race in the Far East (not the best place to get injured).
Ensuing events led to the accumulation of some horrendously expensive medical bills——— Kay is not the richest bitch I ever met by a long way. She needs a “Chuck-up”!
Roy Cooper at fast on water has agreed to auction off the above piece of conception I cobbled together earlier. Now it’s proving difficult to get this thing off the ground.
All it needs is for a number of you out there to bid for it——- bugger me——— it’s got to be worth a couple of hundred bucks——- even on a bad day in a depression.
Somebody out there must like some of the stuff I do, this one is a slant on a present day tunnel, noted for their extremely ugly features——— long gone are the beautiful flowing lines and artistry coupled with the craftsmanship of Molinari, Hodges, Burgess,Scottie, Abbatte, Jones and Seebold. And the likes..
Only one of you will win it———- wouldn’t hurt to put in a bid——— it’s in a good cause——- every penny goes to Kay.

Drawbridge gets pulled up and closed around four this afternoon———— Champers opened first and crackers banged and silly hats donned.

New years eve, Christmas dinner at my friend Steve’s house.

Have to say, there’s a lot to be said to giving the rest of the world the finger and going you’re own route, any time between now and the new year.
Best thing I’ve done in years———- nobody told or “suggested” what I did on Christmas Day, I decided, without anyone getting the “hump”. Creating my very own Christmas Day.
Jilly and I decided years ago there was no point in giving expensive presents neither of us wanted just because it’s christmas.
So, every time we go on vacation and she sees something she wants, she buys it (without a word from me) .
The world ran out of presents I needed some twenty five years ago, so I just save everything up for the biggie, ie; Trusty Lexus IS coming up 110,000 miles and the main user is making funny noises and muttering things like “updated” and change of colour ———- in the old days, it would have been ‘cos the ash trays were full !
Do have a slight niggle at the back of my mind here——— We’ve only had the Trusty Lexus for seven years, so its only just nicely run in———— a bit like me really, and if the Lexus IS going, there’s no telling what or who could be next.
Hmmmm food for thought!

Pushing the Limits: A car built to go 1,000 mph
https://cbsnews2.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2017/12/18/0bbd7454-162f-4e77-b10d-2424cf24babf/thumbnail/620x350/5a5ae9837eb7af8a15d034f67583b809/bloodhound-b-620.jpg#
The British team behind the Bloodhound is aiming to break the world land speed record.
CBS NEWS
In our "Pushing the Limits" series, Charlie D'Agata takes a look at a project ten years, and $40 million, in the making that is redefining the boundaries of speed:
In Newquay, England, the British-based Bloodhound (http://www.bloodhoundssc.com/) team is building a car they hope will travel more than 1,000 miles an hour. That's well over the speed of sound, and it would shatter the current land-speed record.
The car's driver is former RAF fighter jet pilot Andy Green. It is possible, he told D'Agata, to drive supersonic.
"We did it!" he said after breaking the World Land Speed Record in 1997. "The car doesn't leap into the air and explode, I was delighted to find out!"
But if that ride had doors, the Bloodhound is aiming to blow them off.
"We're not just trying to break the current record, 763 miles an hour; we're gonna have an engineering adventure that will push back the boundaries of physics, literally push back the boundaries of human endeavor," Green said.
It will also push the boundaries of the human body.
To get a hint of what that feels like, Green took D'Agata up in a stunt plane, where he trains his body to take the full load of G forces he'll experience during the real thing … simulating the exact conditions of the 1,000-mile-an-hour run.
D'Agata was just hoping he wouldn't pass out. As the plane quickly accelerated to about 500 mph, the blood rushed to his head. "It felt like it was about to explode," D'Agata said.
The speed increased past the speed of sound. Then came the worst part of all: Deceleration at three times the force of gravity.
"It feels like I just got slammed right in the chest," D'Agata said.
https://cbsnews1.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2017/12/18/e09ffd93-39ed-4c03-99b8-6f491a898175/resize/620x/1b990ffee0b539f1ff31540caafbfbbf/bloodhound-andy-green-charlie-dagata-aboard-stunt-plane-620.jpg#Andy Green takes Charlie D'Agata aboard a stunt plane to simulate the G forces one gets breaking the sound barrier.
CBS NEWS
"Exactly so," said Green. "It's fairly unpleasant, and it's all sorts of directions the human body really isn't designed to take."
The gut-wrenching G force is generated from tapping into the lunatic fringe of technology. They took the Rolls-Royce jet engine found in the Eurofighter and mounted it on top of a rocket.
The stats are face-meltingly staggering:
25,000 feet: The altitude it would reach if pointed straight in the air, or 17 times the height of the Empire State Building.
135,000 Horsepower: Every Indy 500 car on the track combined, seven times over.
At top speed, she'll travel a mile in 3.6 seconds -- more than 4 football fields per second.
They face stiff competition from the United States, and the proven 500-mile-an-hour North American Eagle. And from Australia: The Invader, although still primarily in the planning stages.
Bloodhound leads the hunt, for now.
The team is gearing up to smash their own world record next year. And with the competition choking on the afterburner, the only thing the Bloodhound is chasing is destiny.

Thanks again for a most informative piece of information Bob.
Records are notoriously slow things to establish, especially in cars, planes and boats.
its usually government funded or wholly paid for in aeroplanes?
Wealthy individuals or totally mad bastards like WARBY when it comes to boats.
Again, it was always the domain of the rich, industrialists with a few pioneers thrown in when it came to land speed records.
You don’t hear much about the North American Eagle attempt which means they’ve either run out of money or had a massive set back and are stuck around the 500 mph mark.
Warby has his hands full of water speed stuff at the minute. I honestly have no idea why he is even tackling this. There’s no one on the horizon even making noises in that direction, so why ?
The Aussie land speed record is still on the drawing board at the moment, and don’t appear to be going anywhere.
I would bet that the only show in town at the moment is the BLOODHOUND.
Over ten years in the making up to now, forty million and rising ( all from public donations). A slowly, slowly catchee monkey approach———— there’s been no disasters up to now, touch wood, but the first sign and that will knock em back another ten years.
1,000 miles an hour is a long way from becoming a reality.

I’m very fortunate to have steered, cajoled, threatened, but in the end succeeded in getting all my five kids through their teenage years and eventually married, without any of the major problems that seem to befall present day kids.
Not that they were perfect or angelic in any shape or form. Every one of them have been “Grounded” for two weeks or more, at least once in their lives. I always made it stick for the full period. They only needed grounding once———-none of them ever needed it twice.
The very last time I put one of my girls over my knee———— she was 18 years old and had used the F word at me for the first time ever. Don’t know who was the most surprised, her or me !
I do remember my hand aching like buggery afterwards————-
All my kids still talk to me damn near every day, so we weren’t too far out in our teachings!
Five kids, Thirteen grand kids, Twelve great grandkids and still counting———— none of this would have been possible without some sort of discipline and all the love I could give to my kids.
Only an idiot or a liar says do not ever smack a child.
Many of the old adages still apply————- spare the rod——- spoil the child.

Glad someone agrees with me——— thank God there are still like minded people about with old traditional values.
Theres nothing kids can do after midnight that they can’t do before, but they’ll never believe that .
Bringing kids up is a twenty five year full time job for each child——— I was twenty one when I started out to raise a family.
Cars, clothes, schooling, manners, job, food, house, that just kind of happened——— around the five kids———- life revolved around them.
Vacations, weekends, hobbies, friendships, boat racing, it somehow all rolled into one after I quickly realised that there was no way I could keep my head above water just doing one job.
I needed a business ————-
By the time my kids were fully fledged, a bunch of grandchildren were on the scene and most of them had been round the world following the boat racing fraternity,
All the kids were on first name terms with, Molinari, Scotti, Rasinis, Carniti and Koenig———— Williams, Spaldings and Percival, The Bullens, Seebold, Hauenstien, Sirois, Bentz, Bush.
Barry SHEENE was a regular visitor to the farm in his Huey!
Then one day, there was a gathering at the farm with a load of people wishing me a happy 65th birthday————- I was gobsmacked———- the time thief had stolen 45 years of my life, Jesus wept, after 22 years at the farm, it’s time to move on.
We sold everything and moved down to Provence in the south of France!
Thats another tale I might tell you about one day.

Too near Christmas to start that narration Pilgrim———nobody would believe it anyway——- not even in fairy tales does a 68 year old, sell up the farm and RV ——— Take his wife, two retrievers, two cats and buy a beautiful five bedroom house, surrounded by vineyards on all four sides with a swimming pool and magnificent views over Mont Ventoux in the heart of Provence.
Tom Hanks wanted the script !
In reality—— it was the only way I could get rid of the mother in law legit——— she would never move to France and I was getting desperate!———last thing in the world I needed was a “live in”mother in law. She was cramping my style something rotten.
We bought her a ground floor flat in Billingshurst and ran.

C’mon Gene, give me a break ——-seventy years ago when I was young, foolish and full of ambition, I might have taken it on. At sixteen I knew more about the confectionery business than my father and grandfather combined, they both had bakeries. so I left Home and went to work for Silvio Lafranche, the most celebrated Swiss chocolatier in northern England.
Six months later I knew more than he did———— at seventeen I won my City and Guilds in Baking and confectionery and was decorating wedding cakes for the finest pattissieres in northern England .
I bought my first motorcycle. In 1949 ( A Triumph Speed Twin)
Fell out big time with Silvio when he threw a sharp knife at me———- I just picked it up and threw it straight back at him——— scared him sh-tless (and me)——— was sacked on the spot.
Got a job with with “old man Holdsworth” , he could spin a galleon out of boiling sugar in under five minutes.
At nineteen I was the cleverest, most obnoxious, big headed little bastard in the world. At twenty, My sainted mother could stand me no longer, threw all my clothes out in the street and told me to bugger off and never come back.
Picked em all up, and set off down the great north road to London and beyond——— got a job as head baker at a small bakery in Southwater West Sussex.
Would Be forty years before I left West Sussex for France———- but not before there were a number of history books written.
So you see Gene my friend , it would not have been beyond the realms of possibilities for me to have settled on a farm in Colorado running the MAD DOG RESTAURANT.

Jackie, it seems like the lights are on, but nobody is home at Caldwell. They have an impressive website, but I cannot see where they are actively selling anything. They are still registered as an LLC in Orange Texas, but other than that, there does not appear to be any activity that I can find. Most of what I was able to find dates back to 2016. You may already have this information, but I have posted a few links below, including one from S&F. It would appear that Caldwell Racing Technology bought two F2 hulls from BaBa in Italy earlier this year. Looking at the shipping bill of lading, Caldwell seems to have moved from Orange Texas to Vancleave, Mississippi. However, when I tried to look them up in Vancleave, Mississippi, nothing came up. Looking at the weight of that container (9526 lbs.) there had to be a lot more than just two F2 boats in there. That is a lot of "accessories."
Crt- Caldwell Racing Technology imports from Baba Racing And Boat Di Massimo Rog in Italy through the port of New Orleans, Louisiana

when I punch that website in, they want a password and to know if my home phone is my cell phone and did I get the new four digit they sent to my mobile that they don’t even have the number of——- all kinda weird .
Gary tells me they have a great website, but it hasn’t been touched in over a year and that they moved from Orange Texas to Louisiana and then fell off the planet.
Maybe it’s just a temporary hiccup——- I know a lot of folk were hoping to buy one of these motors, at almost any price along with a lot of well known “names”.
It looked like they’d done the hard part——-paid big bucks to front it——- then simply, just fell out of bed.

Do you remember Dave Parkinson’s partner at JBS, Charlie Saunders ? Reason I ask this is, he was agent for a couple of lyric belters———— MEATLOAF was one, Joe Cocker was the other.

Really had the Cosworth tramping in the first heat——— Seebold first, Percy second, me third before the wing dislodged itself, should have been a lot better, but spun out on the first turn. Stone bitch of a course to overtake a half decent driver.

Was Keith Duckworths idea Ron———- he thought the whole back end needed lifting. ( bear in mind all the F1 cars of the day had wings).
All those pretty girls around the boat were my daughters, We were a family concern, seven of us went wherever there was a race meeting.

Merry Christmas to Lassie Strom———- and Lady Zumba—— we don’t always see eye to eye———— but I’ve always thought he was the best of the OE drivers——— including Molinari.
Maybe Lassie could put me right on this little conundrum.
When Seebold lined up with the OZ’s in Bristol———- Weren’t there FIFTEEN OMC’s and ONE MERC?
Reason for this was the fact the goalposts had been moved !
Any engine in the world——— in fact any multiple engines in the world qualified for OZ.
But OMC in its wisdom had the designation altered———- only motors above two litres could qualify for OZ——- this in effect meant non of the ON class racers could compete in Bristol with the OZ!
Leo had less than ten minutes to swop powerheads and put an overbored two liter head on the existing leg.———- When Molinari slowed———- where were the other fourteen OZ OMC’s.
There were some very illustrious names in that line up——-maybe they were a bit off colour that day.
As Lassie so often says——— Merc followers do tend to “BANG ON “. About it.
Me myself, along with most other drivers, from both camps hated the devious tricks and law suits that went on between the camps.
The result of all this was the liquidation of OMC———-and the massive decline in power boat competition . Everyone lost out.
I have never been against big motors———- I have always been against unlimited capacity———
If they made the top limit 1000 cc I would be very happy.
If the top limit was 3500cc I would still be happy !
Basic rules, normally aspirated, pump fuel ——— capacity fixed for ten years.
From three litres to four and a half in twelve months could only spell disaster.

Jackie, It sounds like something out of the Twilight Zone. As Rod Serling would say: “There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man ... a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.” I was thinking that one of your fellow countrymen might come to the rescue, but all seems to be quiet. Steve, Have to tell you ——the limit of my memory goes back a lot further than Ron Burchell and Graham Musson at Cleethorpes 1971
Tom was a sailing man and I’ve been told many times, he was very good at it (something I always wanted to do but never found the time).
I know he went to Italy and bought a small Abbatte from Tullio———- it was quick in a straight line but wasn’t in the same league as the Little Molinari ,
I knew John Clayburn bought it from Tom and was very successful, He won the national OI title with it.
I also knew the boat in the picture was the Abbatte with J/C in it———— I just hadn’t got my brain in gear before I opened my mouth.

Got an early morning call from the surgery today——— they wanted an armful of the red stuff to do more tests. Not allowed to drive with this new medication, or use machinery———— got more restrictions than. “The Prisoner Of Zenda” ever did.
In the early sixties when I had a wife, a bunch of kids——- a camper van and a boat. Every summer we would all pile into the van, hook the boat up and head for the French Riviera———- they used to hold the Grande Crossiere———-two weeks of power boat racing and partying. We got to eat for free, every night there was a party, free food and wine after each race———— but more importantly FREE PETROL.
Start was in Monte Carlo then along the coast to Nice, Cannes, Antibes, I’lle des Embiez ———- racing each and every day.
Was here I met Pruett and Ballesteros———Cees Velden——-Arie De Boom ——— contestants from around the world converged here to have two weeks of fun
First raced there in 1965——- had just enough money to get us all down there——— left there with the boat sand camper van fullto the gills with fuel———- cases of wine———-22 trophies, a ten foot inflatable with a five horse power outboard motor and enough cash to make for my time off work.
Still have to this day, many of the friends I made in those early days.

There was one particular race called “THE GO BACKWARD RACE”——- race for 30 minutes clockwise, at the sound of the cannon, Everyone would turn around and race anti-clockwise .

Another of the races was held at Juan Le Pins———- reception was held in the casino———- very posh do indeed. First time I ever had caviar, both black and red———- this was the original “HIGH SOCIETY”.
Another time we were taken by boat from Ille Des Embiez to The island of Bandol for the prize giving——- was in a superb castle.
Cant remember exactly where the reception was held in Monte Carlo———- was a bit too gobsmacked to remember much, this wasn’t your normal greasy spoon cafe!

First time Don Ross and I landed in Havasu was 1969————- it was known as SITE 6——— Bob Mc Culloughs test lake. He was into everything from chain saws to Gyrocoptors, outboards and everything inbetween He Seemed to know every driver by his Christian name. He also threw $64,000 into the prize fund.
There was construction going on everywhere———- right in the middle of the desert.
The Ramada and the nautical .. which is where both Mercury and OMC were billeted seemed to be the only two hotels that were habitable.
There were great goings on, don’t remember any restrictions or regulations anywhere, I remember it as the friendliest place I ever visited.
Omc did their “SHRIMP BAKE” which to this day I swear is the best I ever attended in my life.
Scotti won a plot of land right on the lake——- he offered it to Don for $1000 and dropped the price to $500 just before we left.
Breakfast was a family affair——— all drivers, officials, big wigs and people like us, met in the dining room from daft time in a morning until everyone had their fill.

Bob was responsible for the surge in go karting back in the 50's and through the 70's with all those fantastic karting motors derived from chain saw engines. When I was "young" there was nothing cooler than to be running a McCulloch engine or two on your kart. Those were some fun times.
These were my three karts that I raced in back in the 60's and kept until a few years ago. Until I sold them, I would occasionally take them out for a run around the neighborhood. Then the local police finally put an end to my fun (second childhood).

Transport was always the big expense———— we were lucky that Parkinson had friends in high places and industry——- the Arab countries ran their own airlines which made life easier.
Parky always said it was a “balancing act” trying to get the figures right—— we were generally ok until the UIM wanted first class travel and Ritz accommodation for hordes of hangers on.
Believe it or not Mercury often stepped in with a helping hand wherever it was needed.
I couldn’t give you an accurate figure of the costs involved Pilgrim——— whilst we never made money out of the series——— a lot of people had a lot of fun.

Funnily Enough Pilgrim we never had any problems arranging accommodation or flights——- we stayed at some of the worlds best hotels———- usually arranged at a simple meeting with management and a few mentions in dispatches.
Theres usually more hotel rooms than customers in a large city.
Most airlines are “proud to be associated with” in exchange for around 100 cattle class tickets.
In the early days of the Paris Six Hours——— the organisers would pay you to turn up——- gasoline was free and there were some hefty cash awards.
All that changed as the event got popular———- It became the most expensive race in the world to participate in——— even the gasoline was double dear——— nobody could afford a protest at €100 a pop.
Its not cheap to put a race on——- but it never was!

Happy New Year everyone!!! I had to chime in on this statement as I have restored a few antique and "rare" outboards. My thought on this statement is that Marks decision on "old blue" is a no-brainer.....why would you change anything on this "time piece" as isn't it the only one that lives on! Would one consider this a historical artifact and if so wouldn't "authentic" be the proper way? JMO

Gary...Agreed. Got ta go original. It will cost a couple thousand or so to do it, but worth it in the end. Only way to do it, that I can think of, is to search out an original 1976 V-1750 & build the rest of Old Blue's powerhead, and the rest of a complete motor, with that. Not too hard. There are still a few out there. Some mounted on boats, that might have to be bought along with the motor, but not much choice any more. Sell off the boat, etc. Look in the freshwater states, and they will come apart to be restored, no problem. One trick though, is getting one with the first generation gearcase design. I don't think that will work out Fugimo. Let me explain. --- OLD BLUE was never intended to be run on a boat and does not have any of the necessary mounting points for all sorts of accessories. It was designed to be run on a crankshaft dyno -- period. When running on the crankshaft dyno, all the accessory things like switch box, ignition coil, starter solenoid, fuel supply, water supply, throttle control, were ready mounted in the dyno cell and of course we didn't need a cowl. So trying to make it a runable, cowled boat engine by adding all that stuff will indeed bastardize it. The only thing bastardized about it right now (no offense meant Jackie) are the die cast cylinder heads which I had to put on it just to get it buttoned up and protected from further decay. The original sand cast heads were missing when I found the engine after many years in storage.
The only reason it's mounted on an undercarriage now is that it looked so good on the dyno, we thought it had a decent chance for production but we first needed to back up the dyno performance with some boat testing. Quickest way to do that was to somehow mount it on the inline six undercarriage. Hense what you see now. John and Jack did that boat testing with OLD BLUE at the lake in March of '72. The test results and some of John's comments about it are given in the MERC V6 HISTORY thread.

Mark always wondered what exactly we had with”Old Blue”————- lots of things just didn’t add up——— the old distributor——- the in line leg———- die cast heads——— the more he looked at it, the less sense he could make of it.
At the moment it would appear the best thing to do is NOTHING, except maybe put a glass case round it.
I have to say, it’s certainly,——— very suddenly become a really exciting piece of kit——- to this day, I will never understand why Rich or Roger never snapped up this slice of history.

I don't know about priceless but I once estimated it probably cost $50,000 or more to build and that was in 1971 dollars. The crankshaft and rods are from billets and there was no CNC machining back then. It was all operator skill with lots of jigs and fixtures.

The rods were from billets because we didn't have forgings at that point. The project had not been approved for production tooling until somewhat later. They were cracked right from the start.

OK Jackie! This isn't exactly about old racers, but I'm willing if you are.
Are billet rods better than forged? I don't know for sure but if they were both made of the same alloy, I'd prefer the forged because forging forces the grain structure in the steel to flow around the eyes on both ends of the rod and this should improve the fatigue life. But if you aren't going to be putting umpteen million miles on the engine, then billets will work just fine.

Thar ya go———- you learn something new everyday——— looking at it from a know nothing layman’s point of view I would go for the milled billet———- no reasons I can give you——— just a gut feeling and some common sense reasoning.
surely there are less flaws in a large billet you can mill six rods out of, than six forged rods?

I'm not sure what engine you're talking about. When you say F1, I assume you're talking F1H20. But I thought those were all 2.5 Merc V6's. But the V8 must be OMC's big 2-stroke. F1 cars had a V8 several years ago but I don't think that's it. It matters if we're 2-stroke or 4-stroke. Straighten me out please.

Well thanks Gary,——- you just filled me full of “No Confidence”———- you should get the quack to give you a shot of Morphine and Steroids———- THE HAPPY JABBY—— .
Result is a sore arse but you can get out of the armchair without the use of a forklift.
Needed to drill a couple of holes in a project———- couldn’t get my arms high enough to use the pillar drill. Walked out and locked the shop door.
Was on these 1500 mph pain killers last week———- found out I wasn’t supposed to drive with them——- it’s not just a case of being restricted——— red necks call it hogtied.
If Pruett had been alive, he would have found us one of his tribal cures——- smoked the pipe——- spun the weejie board pointer——- yelled a few ahoy u woys and I’d have gone home happy——— not cured mind you, but happy.
I once asked him if he ever used any of those O BEJOYFUL CURES—— he said, HELL NO , ICED TEA IS THE THE ONLY WAY TO GO!

396285Here's a pic of old blue in her original form. She's mounted on the dyno stand ready to be put on the vertical shaft dyno. The arm sticking out to the right is the anchor for the throttle cable. I just thought it might help Mark to see this in making decisions about her restoration -- if any.
