I recently read an interesting article about Craig Arfons and his fatal attempt at the speed record on July 9, 1989 at Lake Jackson in Sebring. The information indicates that he was running in excess of 400 mph and as much as 425 mph when the boat lifted off. It was never intended that he would run that fast. The team had a specific amount of time that he would utilize the afterburner, but he went well beyond that. Perhaps he wanted to set a record that would stand for a long time. Nevertheless, laying into the afterburner as long as he did well exceeded the aerodynamic capability of the hull. Had he used the afterburner as planned, he may have set a new record and been able to talk about it. We will never know... RIP

Thats exactly what I mean about the WWS record Bob———— it’s claimed a hell of a lot of lives down the years.
Pruett took me to meet Art Arfons—— he was down the road apiece from Rick La Morte, he loved turbos

Came into the house for a cup of tea, pills and a biscuit———- watched the last ten laps of the Monaco GP————if ever there was a clear cut case of a race being rigged———— it was this one.
Racing (crawling) at speeds five seconds a lap slower than last year——— all but one car actually finishing———— most of them on the same lap———- it was, to put it simply A Procession!
Another one like that and it’ll be F1/s own funeral procession !
I stopped watching two years ago when I realised just how”BENT” the whole F1 scene had become———- shan’t be watching it again——— talk about watching paint dry !
Another productive day in the shop——- well pleased with my achievement——- still have four pug ugly outboards to make.
Sad to hear my son Mark had to cancel his trip to visit England on Tuesday——— his wife Vicky was rushed to hospital today——— prognosis is not good——- I’ll keep you in the loop.

If you think about it, there are so many variable that have to come together to successfully set a world speed record. Many of those variable are out of our control. So at best, even with the best technology on the planet, setting a world speed record is little more than a crap shoot. All it takes is for one or two of the variables to go astray and the whole project becomes a disaster.

So sorry to hear about Mark's wife...

On a personal but very selfish note, I had been so much looking forward to spending time with Mark and Vicky——— we just don’t get time to talk. Somehow, we got caught up in the rush that is glibly labelled “Life”.
If you’re racing boats in the top flight——— then your in the “Fast Lane”——- it takes over your life—— 95% of the time you’re preparing for the next race——— out of season is time for getting your rear in gear ——- scheming and planning as to how you can come out of the traps ahead of the opposition.
I don’t ever remember the transition from competitive racing to organising a series——- helping Mark get into the top level——— I woke up one morning and I was old———- turned 80 ——- and still here!
Somewhere along the way I had acquired five kids——- eleven grandkids and thirteen great grandkids.
My own kids had grown “UP,UP AND AWAY, all had gone there own separate ways———Sandra and Steve had moved to Italy working for BOOTSIE.———- Mark and Vick had gone to live in Switzerland working for Rolla at Record props.
Sam had joined forces with three others to form an air freight company at Heathrow——— turned out the youngest had the best head for business——— has houses in Rural England ——- a beach house in Sussex and a house on the inter coastal In florida and has a handicap of seven.
Looking back, I often wonder what else I could have done for my kids? But then I think there’s a very fine line between “helping” and “interfering” .
On the whole, I don’t think I got it far wrong————- just amazed me the time went so quickly!

Balmy summer weather has at last. arrived here in the south of England———- two back to back bank holidays with damn near perfect weather——— first time I can ever remember that happening !
There’s always a huge three day musical festival down in Portsmouth over the bank holiday———- seems to be where the drug dealers get rid of their product to the young teenagers hell bent on a good time. This time they managed to kill a pair of seventeen year old girls and hospitalised fifteen more.as the organisers closed down the festival.
Im sure the police know who these animals are who sell the kids this lethal sh-t ! Hanging’s too good for the bastards———- tie ‘em to the railway line just before the Gatwick Express is due!
London is rapidly becoming the stabbing capital of the world——— 68 and rising this year alone——- keep it up kids——- won’t be long before Detroit and Chicago will look like safe places to live compared to London. Guess there’s no codes of anything these days?
Days are long gone when you had a disagreement with someone———- off with the shirt——-fists up in the air——— a bloody nose or a black eye——— dispute settled ?
Theres talk that police officers will carry firearms——— we must be the last country left not to have armed police. Times, they are a changing, Dylan was right!

Tried to call Mark several times last night but without success——— if he was at the hospital, he would have his phone switched off of course.
Saw that he called me at 23:00 hrs last night———- I was hard and fast asleep by that time so I missed him.
Outcome of all this——- I have no news on Vicks condition.
Have an appointment of my own at Chichester’s St. Richards hospital 10:30am today, but I’m fit as a lop these days, no worries!
Bank holiday finally over——— things back to normal——- stabbings in Sheffield and Wolverhampton
500 illegal immigrants landed in Spain after their boat sank in the Mediterranean! You think you have trouble with the Mexicans ?
Its a funny old world !

All 485 feet of this thing turned up at Monte Carlo last weekend——— largest sailing ship in the world
its so FECKIN ugly it’s almost beautiful——— if the Russian peasants thought the czars were opulent spendthrifts——— wonder what they might think about this waste of time and money——— watch out, watch out there’s a revolution about!
Weekend left Liverpool supporters crying in their beer———- Ferrari let of the hook——— Froome won the Italian bike race but still accused of “doing an Armstrong “ ! No doubt about——- Sh-t sticks !
My Concept is coming along nicely——- I’m well pleased with it, so the next version should be “Acceptable”.
I know I’ve done a good job when either Roger Hinsdale or Rich Luhrs says “OK HOW MUCH”!

Does anyone out there know of a capable HYDRAULIC engineer ?
Mark is in desperate need of someone to hook up the hydraulics on “MOONLIGHT LADY” —— 50’ high speed craft with a pair of 600 Cats .
Its been seven years in the making and just needs the hydraulics hooked up!

Got the all clear from the hospital——— gentle reduction from the steroids over the next few months and I’m back to normal ?
We had tropical downpours this morning, but the summer type weather is here to stay for the next month or so.
Nobody came forward with the name of a hydraulic engineer.
Boat is housed at Port St. Lucie. Probably a day’s work to get it all together——— c’mon guys——- there has to be somebody out there somewhere who can come to the rescue!

Pacemaker fitted successfully—— should be headed home anytime soon!
Wondered if Peter Unwin was over in the states next week——— now there’s a lad that knows hydraulics if anybody does !
Stressful times for the whole family——- but, if we pull together I’m sure we’ll make it through!

The bank holiday weekends effort———- forty foot tunnel with a pair of “BIG UNS”——- not for real though——- it’s just a “POKER RUN “ fun ——- next one up will be a more serious effort!
Same hull but with style, panache and character——— and four giggling prawns on the transom———-
Believe it’s based on a CRAIGSCRAFT——— look out for them——changes are coming in boat design, this is from the drawing board of one of the new young designers.

The clown who said those immortal words——- LIFE BEGINS AT FORTY ! Never reached 86 I’ll bet.
Suddenly I got a lot of living to do——— starting with a lunch today with my friends Clive and Jane at the laughing Fish !

Right Bernie——- forwarded the details of your man to Mark——— haven’t heard anything back yet!—— that’s not unusual——— kids are prone to not answering parents these days!
Toddled off to the car boot sale this morning———- been there all of ten minutes when God decided to take a leak——— the heavens opened and in no time flat there was water up To my fetlocks, had my old anorak with the hood which is suddenly no longer waterproof for a number of years——- time to replace it methinks! It’s not that I mind replacing it——— but everything waterproof these days has a designer label——— add a “Goretex” label to-a MUSTO or HENRI LLOYD waterproof ——- and suddenly your talking £200+
Where did they go ? All the good times! The flowers And the wine——- the young girls who loved me —- etc, etc, etc.
There is a huge increase in the number of flat bed trucks with “HIGHWAYS MAINTENANCE “ emblazoned across the back——- black and yellow four inch stripes on the tailgate, and a flashing yellow beacon on top of the crew cab. All arenew or near new———— turns out these are owned by the “Diddies” or Gypsies——- Romany’s if you like. Who would suspect a HIGHWAYS vehicle was casing your house——— the buggers can knock on any door —— offer any excuse, and their in. Be alert, it’s worse than the old tarmac scam!
Daughter Sams birthday today——- managed to pick up a couple of Lalique’s a super Jade vase and a Murano bluebottle—— all for under £35——God but I’m good——— got an eye like an eagle !

It’s suddenly dawned on the boat racing enthusiasts who were thinking of going to the F1 boat race at the London docks in June, that they may have to take out a second mortgage!
There will be no change out of £200 for an hotel room anywhere within a thirty mile radius of London!
Man and his wife and two kids entry fee—— Another £200.
Coachtrip from anywhere for the family Another £200 ———- six hundred quid down the pan and you haven’t even bought a packet of crisps and a bottle of water, let alone eaten out in a London greasy spoon yet ?

Turned off his mobile and didn’t take calls from anyone!
Ialways thought his business was situated in Port St Lucie————— it’s apparently in FORT PIERCE
how fortuitous is that———- promisedme he would call him today!
Big thank you Bernie——— I owe you one.

Friday again—— 1st June already——- seems like only last week it was winter, her next to me woke up and thumped me on the arm shouting “Pinch, Punch, first of the month———- its a bit of a silly tradition we’ve had for the last twenty five years———— seeing who’s the first to remember!
Had intended to take a trip up to the smoke and view the London GP———- fortunately there’s a wedding in Bouzigues that I absolutely have to attend !
I have to tell you, I wouldn’t watch the Monaco F1 GP from the Casino Balcony at £50 a pop——- so I’m buggered if I would even consider paying that to watch a series that I actually founded all those years ago !
Ah well, time and tide wait for no man I suppose———- we’ve all moved on since then——- wonder how much faster an F1 boat is these days, since we all charged round a tight sixty second circuit at something in the region of 110 mph ——— the 100mph lap was achieved at quite a few places we raced at.
I know they have a lot of trick sh-t machinery these days——- but I also know, they just about stood still on boat design ? So just how quick is an F1 boat these days compared to thirty years ago?

jackiewilson
06-01-2018, 08:26 AM
No comments on how much quicker today’s F1 boats are than yesteryears F1—— one thing I can tell you for a fact———— half the claims made about the speeds achieved were total bull sh-t.
I once asked a well known factory racer “what’s the top speed you saw today”? His answer was typical————“ Rev counter showed ten five, so it must have been a hundred and twenty five!”—————- “how come I finished in front of you and I only saw ninety five?
No doubt about it——- THEY WALK AMONGST US !

biggest gains are, in my opinion, props. you could ask mark cause he is more versed than i. data they have available today, would have been helpful (back in the day).
Always makes me laugh Jim when so called” TopNotch” racers start spouting on about their props——- props are not an exact science ——— never has been.
In fact many years ago Mark invested in a “State of The Art” ——- infra ultra sonic research de analytic machine——- cost over $50,000, but the industry indicated this was the only way to travel. Move on ten years I ask the boy—— “just how good is that analysing machine of yours ?” ——— no idea Dad—— never use it “ . “So why did you buy it” I asked?
First thing people like Ferretti, Azimat, Sunseeker ask is have you got the .,#=“,:; machine? . Tell “em yes of course we have, they’re happy!
But the problem with the machine is ———- it has no FEEL.
You can count on both hands the people who are good with props—— Mark works on all size props——- he has a matched pair of 60” six blades at the entrance to the prop shop !

2us70
06-01-2018, 11:48 AM
Never understood props. The only success I ever had working on one was fabricating an exhaust tube on a hub less two blade. That was only to stop blowout and didn't make it any faster just more drivable. I tried beating on a few bronze props but usually made them worse. I was however always smart enough to leave my best props alone.

jackiewilson
06-01-2018, 01:39 PM
not only (props are not an exact science), they have never been. i agree, feel is key, but there are a lot of drivers that do not have the same feel. that has always been the difference between winning and losing. with the data available today, i believe you can overcome some of that feel. the data i am speaking of is overlaying lap tracks, trim tracks, throttle tracks, etc. when i started 2 blade props were the only things available, now there are 3,4,5,6 blade props that are more efficient. nobody had the feel you and i had. after all, we ran the little molinari sprints and thought they were the best molinaris built.

Those little Molly’s were so FECKIN quick in their day Jim——- but like most good things there were “side effects “————- i always felt the sprint could bite me———- it never Did mind you, but it was so quick it made me nervous. Was running Lake Como one time ——- Renato has a brand new 1250BP on a 17’ ——— I had a 1000BP on a 15’ Sprint ———- I would pull up alongside Renato but I would not pass him ( it wasn’t written anywhere, and I had never been told———- you wanted a factory ride ! —— use a bit of Common!)
To this day——- I still think Renato was one of the best two Boat-racers in the world!
Best all round boat I ever ran was the 17’ Molinari————Mark reckons the best boat he ever ran was the small Seebold, ( I never ever even sat in one, so I can’t comment)
GG shipped my sprint back to Oshberg after I fell out with him at Windermere when” “SHAKEY” died.
Merton ran it in Havasu——— after that it wound up in Canada in the hands of Mark Rathamell.

I have no idea———Sprint Black Molinari with white stripes, OI class with a 1000BP. Race went ahead as per schedule.I watched Shakey go under———was a practice session——-- boat just submarined. He was two boat lengths ahead on the inside——- . I just made sure I won the class——— it was a rough race———- water was too big for a sprint boat, and my heart wasn’t in it anyway. Boat had a hole in it and was taking on water so the team pulled it onto the dock. GG was spitting feathers and was not a happy bunny——— he told me I was off the team———- I told him to go buck a fuffalo——— so, you can understand why I don’t remember my boat number!

There is some helicopter footage which Mark wants to see before making any comments.
Man who caused it was a rookie and paid the ultimate price. But that’s an interim judgement based on what footage there is available.
Niether boat was badly damaged—— co- pilot has a badly lacerated arm but if the hull had not been Carbon it could have been so much worse.
Afraid there will be calls for full safety canopy in the P1 class before long Pilgrim.

First time I happened to see P1 racing on TV, I couldn't believe these individuals were racing "offshore" sized hulls using "pleasure boat - poker run" seats again. 70 mph or 170 mph, doesn't matter...something will happen eventually and it did. I was also startled to see these guys were racing close enough to trade paint in the turn pins. The accident made its way on to national TV news this weekend.

I have blown the footage up and slowed it down and it appears that the outside boat made a hard left hand turn into the path of the inside boat. I can't believe that it was intentional which makes me think of mechanical failure. If there is aerial footage, it would answer all or most of the questions.

The accident made its way on to national TV news this weekend..
Craig fabricated a safety cell for the P1/s ——— the new carbon lightweight hulls are pushing the 80mph mark ——— this is 6/7 mph faster than last years boats!
Due to mitigating factors and costs——- it was put on hold until next season,

Jackie - I wish I could send it to you, but because it is formatted, it will not allow me to send it other than it's original format. However, you can do it yourself - here's how....First enlarge it to full screen. If you have a desk top computer it will even be better. Then start the video and wait for any commercials to be over and then just before the crash, click on the pause button (the two vertical lines under the picture and to the left). Now gently move the slider button to the right and each time you do, it will be like a freeze frame or manual slow motion. The slider button is the circle or square that moves as the video is running.

yes thats the type of racing it is so very entertaining.
Its an entry level class, everyone comes back to shore with a grin on their face. Must be best bang for your buck racing ever.
Engines are old xflow 140 omc's, 22" Merc chopper and they run claimer rules so engines are $2500 I think, if you spend more you risk losing it for $2500
If I could find a pile of old v4's I would start that class here.

My Sainted Mother used to say —- If you look long enough and hard enough you can find anything you want!
In every motorised sport there’s always a “Cheap as Chips” entry level class——— cars, motor bikes, boats, as well as sail boats, probably perambulators, go carts , frogs and turtles——- whatever the sport, few will survive and go on to be super competitive——— the way forward is always expensive and the old adage “DISCRETION IS THE BETTER PART OF VALOUR” taken into account.
Invariably the route we eventually choose is like the road to hell ( paved with good intention ) but , a few good men will make it.
Smart bit of all this, is keeping those few, as safe as possible in a highly dangerous sport. Do not expect any thanks or accolades for doing this—— because you will be disappointed—— it’s one of those things that are taken for granted, unnoticed when things are running smooth——- but when there’s a tragedy, watchout, Somebody will want to blame someone or something!

Boat racing has never been cheap, it’s simply a case of a 50hp Merc and a 15’ V bottom will always be cheaper than a VERADO on anything——- tunnel—— v bottom or one of yesterday’s boats!

Texas Tri-Hulls are the only way to go. Cheap to acquire, trade paint on the race course and low tech motors. Boats are not fragile custom-built one-of-a-kinds. They are everywhere in the USA gathering moss under trees or lean-to sheds and usually with a V4 on the transom. Prices range from "free take-aways to about $2500. Roll cages are easy to build and install, not like these hyper-complicated F1 safety cells today. The whole idea behind the claimer concept (USA) was to keep somebody from investing a lot of $$$ to "buy" first place in every race. Chances are that if Texas Tri-Hulls really caught on, there still would be Havasu and Parker. Kinda like Mod VP but way cheaper. I noticed that the NGK series started for 2018 and they had a total of SIX boats for one of the heat qualifiers. I'm still betting my $$$ on Mercury stopping any production of S3000 powerheads, mids, gearcases and props for OPC altogether by 2019 (next year).

I gather that several boatbuilders used the same drawings to produce a “Tri Hull”——- Same over here, one for all and all for one———- once you got a mould——- it’s like .shelling peas l
Boats made in a day—— popped , and another one the next day. A bucket full of resin ——- an armful of glass and bingo you got a Tri Hull or a dory or a 166 depending on mitigating circumstances.
Im a great believer in the “RUN WHAT YOU BRUNG”system———— handicap racing where everyone can join in the fun.
I love all Powerboat racing——— don’t always agree with the way it’s going——— one of the reasons I regularly fall out with drivers—— authorities—— format——- afraid my mouth gets me into trouble regularly.

I think we all agree that boat racing needs a steroid injection————- the whole scene is becoming a joke. At the top of Offshore Racing there’s two contenders at the moment withprobably half a dozen at Key West———— with a bit of luck, calm conditions , there could be three finishers———- big FECKIN deal !
P1 was struggling to make its presence felt————- ten boats in all————- one on the trailer because they couldn’t find a driver———— just had the worst possible scenario with a rookie fatality —— that’s not going to help the cause!
Tim Seebold seems to be keeping the NGK series on a fairly even keel, but even the most ardent followers of F1 will admit to a shortage of numbers.
Really thought Caldwell could fill a gap——— turned out to be all smoke and mirrors——- huge horsepower numbers from beautiful pieces of kit that never materialised———— but the price tag puts it out of reach,
Anyway, if they ever did produce a couple of working motors, either Mercury or the ruling body would block it under some obscure law or other——— Mercury pulling the plug on the competition motors.
Yup, I’d have to say Powerboat Racing as we knew it——— is up sh-t creek without a paddle!
Maybe we should wipe the slate clean and start again———- Find a stretch of water——- Lake——river—- sea or ocean——— bring what you got——— run it till it stops. Miami Nassau——— Parker—— Havasu——- ozarks——- might be fun!
Cost is killing the sport, or at best, it’s not helping. When an F1 with a cell comes out at €100,000 and a top running Superboat comes out at a tad over a million———— not a lot of folk are coming out to play.

Just goes to show you don’t take a lot of notice of what I say Pilgrim———- I started racing at club level and we raced everything that that turned up——— inboards, outboards from 18hpRudes to 70hp Mercs, Albatross——- Delta——- Fenn and Woods. If you hauled a boat up to Iver at the weekend—— you got to race it three times. Laps were just over a minute for a really quick boat, and they were twelve laps in a heat.
Had some of the best times of my life club racing. Would take the five kids and chuck em in the back of the van on a Friday after work——-hook up the boat and away.

Valleyfield and Parker were run on those lines——- just turn up and they would fit you in.

No such thing as a free meal or cheap racing Pilgrim——— equipment may have a lower price tag, but if you have the desire to be a front runner, then you have to put TIME AND EFFORT into it.——- both of those commodities are costly.
Can see no sense in caring for a motor, nurturing, tuning,balancing——- spending time and effort and knowledge, go out and win the race, only for some joker with a fistful of dollars to come along and say “lIll take that”!
In the sixties, we used to run events with “Claimer” rules, but they were never popular with the drivers.

Difference between “Ratbags” ( Gary Stray) working Tom Thumb sized motor and my agricultural “Concept” is—— his will be housed in the “SMITHSONIAN” for the next seven years and he won’t be able to touch it———- whilst mine, will be fully visible on the shelf in my workshop, and I get to work on it any time I like, before packing it away in a tea chest and retiring it to the garden shed where it will join the other hundred or so former creations including——-
MALIBUSTANG——— WILLABEE———- FIVE SAILBOATS———— !?!?!? Etc, etc, etc.
I know my place !

I cannot believe the dumb, mindless, stupid idiots that are amongst us pretending to be politicians !
They vote to put in a third runway at Heathrow——- that’s already a quart in a pint pot——— without thinking that people in London affected by the noise may be a tad pissed off. The moment they realise this,———— Er maybe I should vote against this ?——- the motion will be chucked out because the government will not have a majority———— all the millions they spent deciding Gatwick or Heathrow will be lost because of their stupidity———- it’s a no brainer ——— they should just have asked me.

Good morning everybody——- you all ready to face a brand new day?

it was all from a mathematician / fluid mechanics guy that joined Rolls and said is that what you call a supercharger, how about design it like this..
Dr Stanley Hooker, genius.
They never looked back after he joined, until he retired and the RB211 bankrupted them so he came back and fixed that.

yes the narrow Vee water cooled is the engine for a fighter, the yanks did have more powerful engines like the PW2800 at 2000+HP but its huge.

Ask any fighter pilot in the USAir Force what he thought of a Rolls Merlin——— his answer will always be the same———— it made the Mustang into a fighter instead of a carrier pigeon——- in fact, rumour has it the P51 was quicker than the spitfire! ( but there’s no confirmation of that ).

Funny how screw heads have evolved since WWII.

Slots were replaced with cross / Phillips drive.
Phillips were replaced by square and Allen drive
Phillips, square and Allen drive were ultimately replaced by Torx drive.

When we got to Torx drive being commonplace for fastening, I went thru my garage / shop inventory and practically threw everything away that had slots.

I don't even remember the last time I drove a screw in by hand. It's all cordless lithium ion drill / driver tools these days...........

I hate metric fasteners/sockets and their lack of standards to fudge things to fit, but love measuring things in metric when it suits.
piston clearance, thou

Tanks measurements and volumes, metric
weight, metric
pressure , imperial unless its something where bar makes sense
degrees, not radians
lph or US gph and UK gph
fuel still gets loaded in planes in either lbs or kg
I think Boeings are still 100% imperial

Merc and BRP have changed to metric on all new engines i am pretty sure
GM Ford etc I guess are fully changed
dont forget some shaft sizes have been metric all along as the bearings have been metric
Metric countrys havent won any wars and metric engines dont hold any speed records, is that still true?

...In the wood boat building world, the "Reed & Prince" silicone bronze wood screws were the next generation screws, that replaced the straight slot wood screws. They were a recessed cross head pattern that came to a point at the inside bottom, and could only be driven with Reed & Prince driver or bit. Very precise fitment & quality for the times. So—— just Where do “POSIDRIVES” fit into all this———— we still have PHILLIPS and POSIDRIVES to this day——— plus a couple of chinky Cross heads that doesn’t conform to anything except buggering up both bits as well as the guilty Screw!
Hexagonal screws, and threaded bolts have been tried without mega success———- every so often I come across. “A New Experience in fastening”. Which, unless you have the correct bit——— which is worn out and useless, long before you finished the box of screws.we are not going anywhere soon!

I nearly did not go to the gathering at the TITCH———- but glad I did in the end!
So today I took a day off with the intention of spending some time with Craig———- I needed to know just what they were up to——— which way they were headed——- just how good they were in today’s world of carbons and composites———- itnever happened.
Ten hours on the beach, perfect summers day——- playing Boules, Cricket, American football——- hosepipe on full chat, soaking kids and adults all day long.
seven bottles of TATTINGER “ four bottles of MOËT and lots of red and white wine washed down the non stop supply of fodder for the family.
Never got my nap ——- or the Quality time I wanted with Craig———- Family time Took over the day.Tomorrow is Craigs last day before he heads back to Florida and I take off to the south of France——- so Monday is our last chance for a face to face.
Does it matter ? ——— probably not——— but once I’ve got a bee in my bonnet———— it’s like the crabs——— hard to get rid of.
So, there’s a thousand pictures of ALL members of the WILSON clan cavorting on the beach——- Craig took Simons shorts off him and ran down the beach with Simon in naked full flight——— don’t doubt the pictures will hit Facebook before the days out..
Came home exhausted——— happy——- disappointed—— wonder how many folk get a Family day in their life——- with everyone in one place at the same time.
Take a look at when you last did it ——— you may get a shock !

I have never heard that AN is the standard and SAE and JIC are part of that?
JIC is part of the SAE standard.
AN only really exists in aircraft/military stuff and hence moved into hot rod stuff.
You never hear the term AN when dealing with hydraulic machinery anywhere in the world.
( metric hydraulic fittings are horrible and the way they do things, yes AN is the simplest system and would be great if that was the only standard)

Screws with the Pozidriv head.

The Pozidriv (sometimes incorrectly spelled "Pozidrive") is an improved version of the Phillips screw drive. It is designated "Type IA" by ANSI (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANSI) standards.[6] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#cite_note-ScrDrv-6)
The Pozidriv was patented by GKN (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GKN) Screws and Fasteners in 1962.[20] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#cite_note-20)[21] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#cite_note-21) It was specifically designed to allow more torque to be applied and greater engagement than Phillips drives. As a result, the Pozidriv is less likely to cam out (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cam_out).[10] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#cite_note-Higgins-10)[22] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#cite_note-Phillips-22)[23] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#cite_note-23)[24] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#cite_note-24) It is similar to, and compatible with, the Supadriv screw drive.[25] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#cite_note-PoziSupa-25)
Pozidriv screwdrivers are often designated using the letters "PZ" followed by a size code of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 (in order of increasing size).[10] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#cite_note-Higgins-10) The numbers do not necessarily correspond to nominal screw size numbers.
Pozidriv screws have a set of radial indentations (tick marks) set at 45° from the main cross recess on the head of the screw, which makes them visually distinct from Phillips screws.[10] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#cite_note-Higgins-10)
While a Phillips screwdriver has angled (tapered) flanks, a pointed tip, and rounded corners, a Pozidriv screwdriver has straight-sided (square edge) flanks, a blunt tip, and additional smaller ribs at 45° to the main slots. The manufacturing process for Pozidriv screwdriver bits is therefore more complex than that for Phillips: while a Phillips screwdriver bit can be manufactured by cutting four simple slots, the Pozidriv screwdriver tip requires two machining processes at right angles for each slot.
Pozidriv and Phillips are broadly interchangeable, but may cause damage if incorrectly used. While Pozidriv screwdrivers fit Phillips screws, they may slip or tear out the Phillips screw head. Conversely, while Phillips screwdrivers will loosely fit and turn Pozidriv screws, they will cam out if enough torque is applied, potentially damaging the screw head or screwdriver.[10] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#cite_note-Higgins-10)[22] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#cite_note-Phillips-22)

Metric hydraulic fittings are horrible and the way they do things, yes AN is the simplest system and would be great if that was the only standard.
...SAE Society of Automotive Engineer standardization has been expanded greatly around the world nowadays. Its grown to include 80 different countries, just in the last 20 years or so. It just might become the world standard looking forward.

Alll lies——- spread by the well known highwayman Dick Turpin who was landlord at the now defunct “DOG AND VOMIT” just down the road at Wisborough Green.
Sir Roger was well loved by the local community and is well known for his gentle handling of females in the district——— I understand he was of Welsh origin and kept a pair of ewestethered to a lamp post in the back yard. Do believe He travelled to the new world tospread his doctrines.

Craig told me that after the final race in the P1 series on the 4th of July———- all P1 boats are to befitted with safety cells——— Craig designed and built the cell over a year ago, mitigating circumstances prevented it being used this season, but from the Fourth of July on, all P1 boats will have cells!
Dave Parkinson called me to say he couldn’t make the London Docks Race———— told him Niether could I, I had a wedding to attend in France——— hadn’t been invited anyway, and no bloody way was I paying the hundred quid entry fee.
Told me just how “ unhelpful” the RYA and UIM had been in getting the race organised. No different than it’s always been———— whoever gives the biggest backhander gets their support!
A few of the old racers are trying to put a demo race on in Bristol during August this year——— RYA are blocking them at every move——— welcome to the real world——— it's always been like this!
If it’s not rag and stick (sailing ) the RYA do not want to know———- but they’re happy to take Powerboat licence and membership fees and then do bugger all to justify it.
Its only now that people are realising what a mammoth task it was to start a world wide Fonda series, the first ever series to go worldwide———— and just two people did that——- Me and Parkinson. Not with the help of the UIM——- but in spite of them.
After they saw how successful it had become The UIM wanted in——- Rolf Frohling managed to wheedle the F1 title from Fonda and hand it to OMC.
There was just as much deep and devious shenanigans going on those days as there is today.
Charlie Strang flew Parky Over To the states and offered him a job——-he turned it down!
Thats it for a while—— leaving for the airport—— get back to you SAP.

Ask Mark why the safety cells that Ted Jones back in 1987-88(ish) developed for this same size class of offshore V-bottoms, were never utilized? Ted spent a lot of time and energy designing, financing, building, promoting, and himself...actually racing...this developed cell. It always takes a catastrophic, multi-death(not just one death) circumstance, to rush in a "new" mandatory solution. Same with the canopies mandated in offshore & cells in tunnels years ago. Coincidentally, it seems to always rear it ugly head not long after a newer design hull comes into popularity. Personally, I've never liked the P1 hull "Design"(not the build quality) and how it performs. Nothing to do with the power or rigging. But that's just my opinion. Big drinks and then an oyster festival in the evening accompanied by unlimited drinking and eating,
Wine, Whisky and water, all served in the grooms mothers oyster

Wedding today——- day two of the festivities. Still no internet so doing this on my iPhone—— problem is—- my podgy fingers——

Lady who owns the house we’re staying in, commissioned me to do a piece right off the top of my head
“BIRTH OF A RACE” was one of the first efforts.
Over 100 people were at wedding ceremony in the town hall- then we were transported to the ruined abbey St. Felix De Montceau at Gigean. It’s been deserted for 500 years———doesn’t have a roof but the acoustics are superb——- loads of concerts and classical events held there. Big eats and lots of wine.
Then onto the vineyards of Domaine St.Andre on the Route De Marseillan —— very celubrious setting,
North Carolina relatives held their own until 10:30pm then began to flag a little—— first course of a five course meal was served at 23:00 hrs———- cheeses were served at midnight—— by this time I was on my knees——— threw in the towel around 12:30 and headed home——-end of day two—— justone more day!

jackiewilson
06-17-2018, 12:56 PM
Yup—— it’s all over ! The three day wedding of a Frenchman and a girl from south Carolina is finally over and done.
Midday Sunday was the start of a Bar b que for 100 guests ——— red, white and rose, beer and spirits flowing like niagara ———— more food than you could imagine.
Marquee in the back garden ——- 80 degrees with a breeze coming in off the Med. Perfect conditions.
We were out of there by 4:30.
Had enough of weddings to last me a lifetime———
Just found out I can piggyback my iPhone using its Wi Fi, Ok, so I will never be a geek——- but I never forget a trick!
Get back to you and will answer some of your comments soon.

Much like everything else I think the electric records are divided into classes, I think by voltage, 48v 72v 144v and there is an unlimited which Jaguar Vector has beaten. Mike Bontoft was 144v class but I suppose either his license or something else stopped him from claiming outright. Records require a modicum of intelligence and plenty of people go for the low hanging fruit as such. Why try and beat a high speed record when you can easily surpass a record established when the technology was in its infancy or nobody else was bothered. Not to take anything away but all the existing records were established with early technology on very limited budgets by enthusiasts trying to forge a path. I dread to think what Jaguar Vector has spent to go what is still a relatively modest speed but I hear they are trying again later in the year at records week.

Things have really changed..........look at the building trades guys..........nobody uses AC power anymore......all cordless lithium ion power and the delivery voltage is going up to 80VDC from a humble 12VDC where it started. On Kerosene would say it's the Merc JP optimax, only sold to the US military I think.
the etec work well with kerosene because of the etec injector, the military also use them
on diesel they are not great due to the carbon

Unless you have a highly talented CPA who is familiar with tax laws (business cost, depreciation etc) the cost of any race boat these days is not worth the money. DAC or Seebold, it doesn't matter. I unloaded all of my F1 stuff 8 years ago for 10% of what I paid for it. I was glad to get what I got for everything. Seebold composite price in 1990 was $9500...........Custom built Hoffman in 1995 was $10,500. DAC @ $130K or Seebold @ $25K? I don't think so.

Its the way of the world my friend——— who would have thought that an Outboard “Poker run” rig
would cost over a million?——— I am still remember my daughter Sam getting £500 sponsorship to do a season’s junior racing—— we thought we’d hit the big time!
Told Hodges I wouldn’t be buying any more boats when he hiked the price to £3,000 !

Get pig sick of folks who tell you ——- IM SITTING IN THE AIRPORT AT —————???? Hate to tell you this, but I’m at Montpellier airport which has had at least forty zillion euro’s spent on upgrades in the last ten years.
Its every airport in the world——- whether its Oshkosh or Carcasonne, obscene amounts of money have been spent on marble floors and scent and booze shops, dustbin like robots that read your flight details and passports, but can’t get you off in time because the flight controllers have thrown the dollies out of the pram.
Machines can’t replace people——— and it still takes an hour to collect your broken suitcase which some disgruntled “baggage handler” threw down the stairs in a mad fit of depression.
Dont you just love to travel ———— especially by air!

Living in my village —- Bouzigues——- is a Swede, Michael who just happens to race vintage autos—— it’s a Rotary Mazda RX7-78 with a 12A dry sump. Full group 2 spec—— he really pisses off the establishment by continuously winning——— told me he’s pulling 500 hp. What do you think Johnno? 500 Hp maybe but I suspect that's a bit of wishful thinking. All Mazda's are dry sump as the oil reservoir is out side the working engine. The Mazda LeManns engine was 900+ Hp.

Just telling it the way I heard it.

Race purse amounts gradually got smaller and then disappeared (sponsors / organizers).
Tow money died.
Local motel discounts (for racers and crews) stopped.
Trophies went from 2-3 ft tall sky scrapers to itty bitty desktop icons (along with plaque inscriptions and size) then died off.
Prizes went from humble T-shirts to coffee cups and then wall ribbons to certificates (paper).

On the other side of the coin.............entry fees went up just about as fast as fuel prices.

Ok , so prize money went down in the USA——- there never was any decent prize money in Europe.
So we can’t use that as an excuse.
The chrome plated plastic four poster trophies were FECKIN hideous——- couldn’t have cost more than one ninety five in Walmart’s——- Italian and Spanish trophies were beautiful in design and probably solid silver———- French were serious pieces of glass———
If anybody wants a one off trophy—— I’m quite capable of doing the odd desirable at a reasonable fee.

Imagiine listening to a harp and a violin in perfect harmony inside a fourteenth century French Abbey without a lid ? Awe inspiring——— until the Beauty is interrupted by the sound of a three rotor drone—— controlled by an iPhone ——— taking piccies of the guests below.
Apparently, before long, the wedding photographer will be another casualty in the technological race to get rid of “BEANS”————— “HUMAN BEINGS “———
Five will get you ten there will be no such thing as a HIGH STREET————— ( you remember, place where all the shops were long ago) within five years.
Carrefoure In France, is a bit like Public’s in the USA———- used to be a food shop that sold fruit and veg———- then confectionary———then meat and fish——— then electrical and clothing———- then banking and insurance———— then travel and holidays——— then camping and fishing gear.
Was in there Saturday——- over a hundred push bikes, but with ion battery power and a range of seventy five miles, ranging in price from $500 a pop——— to $2500. Didn’t anyone realise that this would mean the Butcher, the baker, the greengrocer, the haberdashery, the electric shop, the furniture shop, the clothes store, the bike shop, the bank, the insurance broker could no longer justify staying in business and had to close its doors?
Is this happening in your town——- or is it a European thing?

Ok, so Somedays you eat bear ,——- maybe it IS happening in your town and you just haven’t noticed it yet———— milkman used to deliver fresh milk, cream and butter to our door every morning when I was a kid———- he had it in a 20 gallon aluminium churn that housed three measuring ladles
This was replaced with glass milk bottles that were washed and sent back to the dairy——— now these have been replaced by plastic milk bottles of every size——— when you finished with it you just chuckled it in the ocean ?

All joking apart Willabee’s “Hot Singles” is in a class of its own with over 715,000 hits——- this time next year Fuji’s thread “Mercury through the years” should just about beat Willabee to the million mark——— unless of course, he decides to stick some ginger up his bum and give a big boost to the HOT SINGLES——- which Welch can do easily.——- Go for it William.

Yes you did ask before and I forgot, apologies for being so remiss!
Try and find out for you Pilgrim——— late seventies and well into the eighties from memory——- but that’s shot to pieces, Mark and Parkinson both have better grey cells.
When OMC and the V8 series went into meltdown——- SAN Germano and Velden had nowhere to go——- FONDA was the only show in town, so with the help of Rolf Frohling and some devious UIM dealings they took over the old Fonda series and all the worldwide venues we had created.

Yes we used the three carb——— a few Americans used Alex’s six carb———- Cees ran the two litre looper OMC on a couple of occasions——— he actually won a heat in Munich, but failed to show for the next two heats. Didn’t give a flying fart what brand of engine it was as long as it was two litres!
George Kragge brought a Koenig two litre one time——— Sergio Carniti tried their biggy two litre motor just the once——— OMC claimed they only made a few two litres, but if that’s so, I can tell you Cees had more than his fair share, he had shed load!
Omc did not come out to play at two litres ———— they never won a Fonda race——— would have loved it if they had!
Lassie keeps banging on about what a marvellous motor the two litre OMC looper was———-I just never saw it!

So, they’re going to armour the P1’s with V8’s for next season———— carnage unlimited! Good job they will be fitted with safety cells. Going to need a few more thAn the five that turned up at the last meeting!
Take a look at Willabee’s “Hot Singles” they’re taking a look at Billy Don Pruett’life——— that’s too hot to even contemplate———- should be interesting to say the least?
See Benny Robertson was at London to watch the London GP. Didn’t look like there were many spectators—— was told the racing was good——— lots of ex race boat drivers congregated there to have they’re piccies taken with other old ex boat racers!

That V Bottom will probably run at the OZARKS in the August meet.Gieco will be there too.
Mark will have his fifty footer there——- been seven years in the making—— has all the bells and whistles and more besides——- lots of new innovations never before seen in the marine industry. Take a look at it if you get a chance, it’s well worth it.
Got a clear day to do my thing in the shop today——— been up to my fetlocks ——- but today I’m free

Arab habit of chopping off a thief’s hand for stealing, somehow doesn’t seem as barbaric as I once thought———- there is no record of a one handed thief, anywhere——— maybe there’s a lesson to be learned here !

Got a full seven hours in the shop today——- barrelling along nicely with the latest”Concept”, so I decided I would paint the hardwood sponsons black———- couple of coats of primer filler——- follows by a couple of coats of Hammerite. Can ran out of puff, not to worry , I bought a case of six diamond black at the car boot a while Back!
Job was going well,—— no runs—— almost there, gave The can a good shake and put a really heavy coat on both sponsons———- was stood back, admiring my handiwork, thinking I finally got this painting lark licked !
Watched in horror as I managed to get the most perfect “CRINKLE FINISH” ever.
Two hours later, I was back to square one——- bare mahogany!
Turns out ACRYLIC and Cellulose paint are not good bedfellows.

Mande so Pilgrim——— Mother Nature has a habit of righting wrongs all on her own——— sometimes, if things are not going to her liking, she’ll throw in a touch of plague and pestilence——-then maybe a couple of years of drought and famine. Then she’ll simply sit back and wait for the human race to get mad at each other and start another war or three———- problem is, we moved on from the bow and arrow and past nuclear To who knows what sort of carnage?

Car boot went well though nothing worth buying or even mentioning leapt out at me.
Did a wee forage at the scrapyard and found a few items that made me chuckle—— got a bit of an impasse on the windshield for this latest “Concept” —— needed some three inch alloy tube, which is rarer than the proverbial “Rocking Horse “ Ka-Ka. Found a length so I should be able to fabricate the screen.
Spent a quiet afternoon at the beach house with my daughter Sam——— dinner at home and an hour of TV. Ready for some quality shoptime before heading down the road To Portsmouth for Sunday lunch with a couple of old friends.

With the world soccer competition going on in Russia, the tv cancels the regular programs and stuffs soccer at you from all channels——- be glad when it’s all over!
Her who shall be obeyed just informed me that it’s Wimbledon after the soccer and that’s two weeks of nothing but tennis.
F1 are still playing pat-a-cake——— my turn this week—— what a crock of crap that fiasco turned out to be———- keep Ferrari happy at all costs, cos if they pull out the whole shebang collapses like a pack of cards.
Thought the new American owners who bought out Ecclestone might have made improvements, but no such luck—— they’re running round like headless chicken——— don’t have a clue what to do !
Far too much money—— so little to show—- just a procession of rich kids with expensive toys parading round in the name of racing.
Its really speeded up “Turtle Racing” ——— no overtaking—— simply tactics——- pit stops——- tyre strategy. Give the buggers two choices of tyres——- wet or dry—— send em out to race!
Im off out to the shop for an hour or three!
