No, sorry I don’t Pilgrim. Think it was somewhere near the prison. We had lots of help from the inmates. SEEBOLD and I would go for a game of golf there, you had to have a handicap of twelve or less. We lied.

This one was next to the Publix at 5-Points. But there was a Piggly Wiggly just down 26th Street from there! There was also an A&W at that intersection forever. Hot dogs and root beer...days gone by!!

Parky never throws anything away. He still has the results and press releases of every race that Fonda put in the ten years. He promoted them.
The guy who has more pictures than anyone else in the world is BRIAN DEWEY (DEWDROP) .

...is brian on s & f?

Hes a bit like you Fuji, very little is known about him, except he keeps a low profile . His wife Marge has more friends than “Dewdrop”. Was the official Photographer of Fonda for years, Mercury paid him , via Parkinson of course (JBS ASSCOCIATES).
No, he’s never once been on S and F to my knowledge.

...have no idea when you were there with brett, but maybe sounds like late 80's? (after aronow gone). last i knew bretsky was still selling hi-perf steering & other complimenting rigging hardware out of his little condo on the water in east ft. lauderdale. brett's a good egg.

Found some old pictures of Pruett, Charlie Sheppard, Don Ross, Brian Hunt and me at Bristol . Year was !990. Was the year Salabert was killed at Bristol. Now realise Pruett and i were friends for over twenty years. Might explain my cock up in the years . Sorry about that folks, Gene is definitely right, i was out by a decade or more.

Jay Leno has around 100 or more, automobiles and motorcycles in his collection. So you can imagine his vehicles have low time and miles on them. And as a multi-millionaire, he has his own personal garage staff to maintain his fleet.

"Body was falling off it," I would venture to surmise, does not happen with a collector of Jay's financial support and his dedication to the art of preservation.

I have to tell you, i was in at the birth with Schultze, Molinari and Torrigia, and I never saw a Schultze that looked anything like the Magnum.
only the molinari looked anything like it. Torriggia was far superior to the magnum in every respect.

In the colour pic with Don driving the throttle/shift is outside, I believe these were the very early Magnums.
The black & white pic above the throttle/shifter is inside the cockpit.
Looks like the Magnum has a 1968 Merc 1250, the Marauder has a 1969 Merc 1250.

Race on Sunday, and then sell on Monday.
The origin of some pleasure boats.

If Roy was using an 1100, chances are it was either an early factory run in 1965. or a production run in 1966. There is no doubt that this was an early Molinari. but not the 63/64 version as shown in previous pictures outside the Como factory.
Gene just confirmed he rigged the MagMiss in 1967 with a 1250. Not too long after the first appearance at lake x of the first molinari. ARONOW was known to be a frequent visitor to the lake around that time.
Hope you all remembered

As far as I know the Glastron Molinari 2+2 never went into production. It was a one-off prototype that was included in Glastron's 1970 brochure and never seen again. I remember actually seeing the Starcraft and Mystrys but never the GM 2+2. I don't know where / when the Starcraft photo was taken but the V6 Merc is way too much motor for this tunnel. All of these tunnels including the Magnum were designed with the inline 6s and V4s in mind for power. I doubt that WOT with a V6 is a good idea.

...Magnum Missile was a completely different hull than the StarCraft T-170 Eliminator & the Duo Mystry. Magnum was different & a shorter boat altogether.

FUJIMO
07-11-2020, 06:09 PM
...The Starcraft & the Duo tunnels were a hull copy of Jan Schoonover's Dutchman 16' tunnel, that Jan produced from about 1966 to about 1970...

FUJIMO
07-11-2020, 06:18 PM
...In the winter of 1970, Vic Porter, and Mel Smith, both with Duo at the time, visited Dutchman in Lima Ohio & a tunnel boat was purchased. They took it back to the plant & tooled the Duo Mystry 17 with their design deck. The boat weighed approximately 650 pounds. Duo was known in the 70's for copying many other boat company's designs. Tri-hulls, V's, all types...

FUJIMO
07-11-2020, 06:25 PM
...Very few Mystry's were produced as it didn't sell well & dealers knew it, so very few dealers ordered one. The Duo dealers were too busy selling & making money with the other, better family oriented Duo boat line of boats...

FUJIMO
07-11-2020, 06:31 PM
...So the Duo Mystry tunnel molds were bought by StarCraft, which they called the T-170 Eliminator, and only a few were made in an attempt to promote the product. The T-170 was built heavier than the Duo at closer to 1000 pounds. Coincidentally, Duo and StarCraft at the time, were both owned by Bangor Punta Corporation...

...me too gene. but everyone needs to compare the hulls...not the decks. having been in the plastic boat business, everyone also needs to understand that when a new boat mold is tooled from a wood plug that was a boat, they are not tooled just like the wood boat(plug) identically. design changes have to be made that allows parts to be pulled from the finished mold. no reverse angles, a minimal amount of hull side draft angle(s), sharp corners & edges need to be eliminated, transom angles need to work, and so on. so the finished product counter-part is never going to be just like the wood plug it was pulled from... and then of course, the deck designs are almost always changed radically, to reflect the new owners taste...and to minimalize the recognition of the boat it was copied from...https://www.screamandfly.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=469257&d=1594511781

Look fellas, its good to discuss, rightly or wrongly, i always ASSUMED the Maggmiss was a Molinari take off. No, I don’t have a shred of evidence. I knew both Dieter Schultze and Angelo Molinari as far back as 1963. Visited both factories many times. Dieters operation was nothing like Angelo’s. It was more like a large converted chicken shed with just one lady helping him part time. Both were highly competitive hydroplane racers, designers and builders. Angelo had a much more professional set up. A purpose built factory and skilled workers, with a number of boats being built at any one time.
Dieter built one at a time and only to order.
I was surprised to hear he had sent both a dual engine and a single engine boat to the USA at one time. He was not a wealthy man and each boat paid for the next.
I don’t remember him ever supplying “The Factories” . I do know he raced in Havasu on a tight budget. He also supplied quite a few private individuals in both the USA and England with raceboats.
On the other hand , its my understanding that Aronow visited Como and knew Angelo. Which lead me to believe that the MagMiss was based on a Molinari.
Then Theres the fact that my own observations are, i have never seen a Schultze race boat that looked anything like the MagMiss. I have seen Molinari’s that did look similar to it.
I do not disbelieve Rich when he tells me two boats by Schulze were imported and Aronow bought one to copy.
Then Suddenly Gene tells me it was a Schultze???
Mark is looking into the test/spread sheets from lake X , he thinks he had the results from the Magmiss and ROY Ridgell’s first Molinari. All the measurements will be there. I know this doesn’t prove a thing, but it may be a step closer to solving the mystery.
Why was it not stated where the design came from? Austria or Italy ?

And we could use the likes of many others like ... (some I knew) Sirois, Bakos, Pruett, Gary G, and Roy R, to help keep the pot stirred.

Thank goodness the dialogue continues today with the likes of ... Jackie, Gene, Fujimo, Willabee, Brownie, Lars, Rich, and others in the know. Hopefully their memories serves them, and us, down the correct wake zone.

Gene, i have no reason to disbelieve you when you say it was a Schultze. But you can’t just leave it at that! HOW CAN YOU BE SO SURE.?
Or is it just a gut feeling?
Same thing with you Brownie, I’ll listen to any explanation you care to give me! Or is it again, just a gut feeling.
Reason I question this is the fact that I never ever saw a Schultze that looked even remotely like the MagMiss!
What year did Dieter Schulze first race in Havasu? I was there in 1969 and saw him. I think he told me he raced there in ‘68, but my memory’s shot!
Maybe RON Hill still has the 60’s race programme!

For sure--it was not from Don Aronow's drawing board--like most successul people he got ALL the credit--very little left over for others-

Some lf the others--I knew nearly 60 years ago-

Nicky Chapman---never got the credit---could he have built the plug? but his wood working definitely was a huge part of DA's success

469311OK Fuji, now you have your work cut out. Unfortunately i dont have any phoggies of the little Torriggia apart from this. Was taken the morning after i arrived back from Italy . It snowed every bit of the way back and all the Italian rads were closed so i came back via Ventamigglia and Monte Carlo. Took me 28 Hours.
Transport was interesting. A morris J2 van with an MGB 1800 motor and overdrive on every gear including reverse. Could pull a trailer at around 85 mph but swallowed gas like a drunken Gippetto downing Buds.

Yesterday, for the very first time i began to feel my age. Above is one half of a pair of gates im constructing for an old friend. Only twelve foot wide and five feet high, but you would not believe how heavy the damn things are.
Fashioned out of inch and a quarter Burma Teak , eight inches wide and nine foot long. My friend Eddie Jehgla , bought 25 of them out of Brighton Marina for Twenty five quid the lot. But that was forty years ago.
I set to and planed and thicknessed the planks Cut tham to size , then finally teak polished the planks ready for construction .
Yesterday a finished one of the pair of gates . Realised just how heavy the damn thing was and how i can no longer chuck large items about .
Will be another week or so before i tackle the other half.

I did realise before the start i was biting off more than i could chew, but i always had a big ego and a mouth to match. Arms, wrists, elbows, neck And the arse muscles i never knew i had before. Should be simples to do the other half and stitch them together ready for hanging. I will not be doing any more lifting. Only the final finish, which ive decided will be Matt.

Tony Williams, Bob Spalding and Rick Frost did over 135 mph in the early 1960's.
Print accuracy is a profession, but not always implemented.

The greatest speed increase happen from 1953 to 1954.
What do you think made this 20% speed increase?

I will suggest two probabilities.
a) In 1954 Massino used a different fuel source/additive.
b) Massino switch from a flat bottom to a hydro hull.

I do not mention a greater horsepower engine, because outboard evolution seems to me to be incremental. And you can see that, with the outboard results during the other subsequent records.

What I find of interest is the 20% increase in boat speed (83 to 100 mph) from 1953 to 1954.

Currently there is a movement in the USA to remove all Confederate icons. Mississippi has been directed to come up with a new state flag. Somebody's even painting a target on tearing down Mount Rushmore. Kinda makes you wonder what really happened in Egypt 4000 years ago and what we believe to be fact in what we see, touch and interpret today? 500 years from now the Lake Havasu OWC will be understood to be some kind of elite multi national naval exercise.

Jackie is there a civil war happening between the British people? I saw this article at Yahoo Sports.
~~~
Last week, Lewis Hamilton called out both FIA president Jean Todt, and F1 CEO Chase Carey for lacking leadership amid his Black Lives Matter activism.
The Mercedes driver also criticized F1 greats of the sport Emerson Fittipaldi, Mario Andretti, (https://www.autoweek.com/racing/formula-1/a33378243/f1-hamilton-generational-divide-racism-andretti/) and Jackie Stewart, along with former F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone, even accusing the latter of lacking education.
Ecclestone, 89, is not taking the shot without taking one of his one. He has been lashing out at Hamilton through the British newspapers (https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/motor-racing/formula1/bernie-eccleston-lewis-hamilton-racism-f1-black-lives-matter-a9633971.html), saying, "Lewis, you state that I am uneducated and ignorant. I have the same level of schooling as you. At least I had a reason—I was at school during the last war, not always under the best conditions. You are lucky because if I had not been as properly educated,perhaps Formula 1 would not be as it was for you to benefit as you have.
"Don't think about what your skin color is—think about what color your mind is. Don't envy others. Just improve and catch up."
Given the option, Todt says he would love to keep world politics out of Formula 1.
No, not a civil war. Just a bunch of idiots who found a slogan BLACK LIVES MATTER.and went on the rampage. If I held up a WHITE LIVES MATTER placard, I would be called a racist and thrown in the pokey!!!
I think Hamilton has just about crapped his bucket full !!! Hes been sailing close to the wind with his BLM views and taking the knee, condemning drivers who think otherwise and biting the hand that feeds him.
I have been an ardent admirer of Lewis since his carting days, but I wouldnt even bother switching the TV on to watch F1 since his idiotic and racist ramblings started.
Time to button up,or piss off into the long distance. I will no longer listen or watch all the BLM racist claptrap.
We Will probably find a small secluded beach ,somewhere off the Isle of Wight and Moor up. temperatures are set to be over 90; so I may even dip my toes in the briny.
Been buying and selling lots of machinery, trying to downsize . Problem is, I seem to get less and less actual work done, although my creativity has hit new highs. See how it all comes together.
If only I could step back in time, and my efforts could rewrite present day history. Then the historical revisionism would go something like this Canterbury tale.
~~~
I am enjoying a meal with my dad, boating enthusiasts, and other Mercury team members, at Tabard Inn. When we all proceed to retire to our sleeping rooms, I take my dad to the side. With youthful persuasion, I implore my dad.

Dad when Prince Phillip and his entourage, approaches you tomorrow, I have a gift for him. It is letter of humble recommendation. And my dad, not wanting to be party to such foolishness,

nevertheless takes the message. :iagree:

Next day after the informal meeting at the British boating event, my dad gives the
Duke of Edinburgh, my parting gift. It’s a hand written letter from me, to his royal highness.
This is the tale’s advantage of hindsight, going back to the past, and creating revisionist history.

The letter's content, to be continued ...

Sir Duke of Edinburgh,

Your honorable sons are destined to be fine members of the royal family, as is their father,
Your Royal Highness. Your oldest son, a pure blood, is in the lineage of upholding his royal duties.

The younger royal, the Duke of York, if humbly permitted, I would like to suggest some alternatives. There are some fine young women, here in the boating community, even though they are of common blood, they are upstanding British citizens. They are ladies in waiting, and would make any gentleman a fine wife. They will not publically embarrass the Queen Mother, nor the Duke of Edinburgh or the British people.

(...This part is not in the letter. What a coup of triumph for the British boating community if
Prince Andrew were to have married: a daughter of Jackie, Bob, Tom or any of the other maidens in the marine industry. Now back to the letter).

Sir bewares, of Jeffrey Epstein, and his consort of questionable crime Ghislaine Maxwell. Warn Prince Andrew to not fall victim, to their lair of playboy mansions and financial wealth. Bad publicity of wide-world proportions will befall the Duke of York, if he personally associates with said party.

Prevent the House of Windsor’s future, from surpassing King Arthur’s court in machinations.

Yours sincerely,
Lake X Kid

Ive known Andy since he was five years old. Knew his mum and dad too. Salt of the earth people, died long before their time. His father Ron raced both outboards and inboards.
Andy should have won the Fonda world title at his first attempt, it went down to the wire, but John Hill beat him in the last race of the season. He was so nervous, he pittled at least five times in the hour before the start. John of course had been racing for 20 years by then and was much more experienced.
If Theres any chance at all, then Andy will take it, May your God be with you Andy Elliot.

Now, Theres a piece of history, right before your very eyes.
The very start of formula one power boat racing. There was no such thing as formula racing in boats, but there was in cars. 70 years ago this month, the very first formula one car race was held at Silverstone.
Five years later, Charlie Sheppard based his interpretation of “FORMULA” Racing and offered it to the UIM. Idea was, to make it easier for the fans to understand.
Before this happened, circuit racing as we knew it was based on hydroplane racing ,
ie, OZ, ON, OI, OF,——— we actually stole their designations. then, there was the utility classes (pleasure boats) XU NU,FU, EU , and so on. He single handedly changed the face of circuit racing for ever !

Another piece of powerboat racing history, Murray Walker. Without a doubt the most revered, loved and respected commentator of all time. He is known for his outrageous Gaffes whilst commentating.
THE CAR OUT FRONT IS UNIQUE, NOT ANOTHER ONE LIKE IT IN THE WORLD, EXCEPT HIS TEAM MATE WHO IS IMMEDIATELY BEHIND.
He was commentating at Bristol when I was running the COSWORTH. He had all the favourites on his spread sheets. It kinda threw him when I shot off first. His famous quote that day was. “SOMEBODY’S IN THE LEAD” , so, in an instant, I went from being a nobody to a somebody .
Murray Walker is still alive and well and is now 96 years young.

If you go on to youtube you can watch the 1976 Bristol race with Murray Walker commentating he states the leading boat was driven by Jackie Wilson but the camera only showed the white Milesmaster boat of Bill Brown in Venus and you were driving a blue Hodges.But I was way out in front and lucky enough to lead the race in the no 7 boat for one lap only before having gearcase issues but on camera Murray Walker states the no 9 boat driven by Jeff Edwards is leading when any one watching the race could see who was leading.Enough said the picture shows the no 7 boat and the boat way behind was the no 9 boat who Murray thought was leading he was seriously confused when it came to boat racing.

Now, i am fortunate indeed to have the two engineers who made a mercruiser leg and bottom end stay together as friends to this day. Malcolm TYRRELL and Ian “Hawkeye” Hawkins. Both have been retired for a few years now . Malcolm retired from COSWORTHS. Ian had moved to the USA with ILMOR HAVING LEFT COSWORTH ENGINEERING .
Remember we had 400 horsepower going through that leg, so the first thing they did was to replace the splined shaft with a quill shaft , about as thick as your finger.
Next up was to make the gearcase do its job without failures . I had a temperature gauge and a pressure gauge.

That maybe so Fuji, but i bet mercury never made an indestructible “ Quill shaFt “as Duckworth used to call it , or “ a very desirable piece of kit”. This particular shaft never let me down once , together with the centrifugal clutch. tickover was 3000, hit the pedal , at 4000 the drive came in, 400 hp went through that quill shaft. Twisted like a corkscrew before unwinding And sending the power gently down the leg without breaking spines or anything like that. Bit like a soft start on today’s power tools.

Believe me when I tell you , that pair know more about TORQUE than anyone else in the world !
Part of the team that made the motor part of the chassis in the first monocoque ever !
if they knew about torque they would have known they needed 4 of them to get 2 x 700lbsft or so at any rpm to shift a Class 1 boat
would have been a good engine in an outboard class...

Renato and Billy were the two top contenders for the Best ever circuit driver !

Renato Molinari racer: by Christopher Wright in the Embassy program.

Some would say he had to win. And that definitely does not make him the most popular man in Bristol.
Molinari has no great love for the Gentlemen of the Press.
“Non Comprende” when he does not want to talk to you in English
Arrogant, he does appear a little bit that way to some jaundiced journalists, and a few other powerboat drivers.
Molinari is a loner; he has a job to do. He wants to get on to it.

8 times World Champion.
10 times European Champion.
4 times Paris 6 Hour winner.
2 times Havasu winner.
2 times Parker winner.
(Article’s 1978 stats).

I (the lakeside kid) remind myself, that personalities sell books.
Statistical wins wow us; engine specifications draw our attention and are worthy to be told.
But humans connect more with humans, and therefore sell more books, than books about machines. Men and their machines … and more so the men, and women too.

HP = Torque x RPM, the importance of torque in a non-shifting vehicle. As I humbly understand it.

Operating with only a single gear is, one of the dilemmas of a race boat setup not found in cars. Without shifting to a higher gear, the boat is confined to a compromise of acceleration or top end speed.

In the chart, the boat is not able to shift to higher gears, thus not able to maximize utilizing the engine’s rising horsepower curve. Therefore prop selection is upmost a vital decision. The wrong prop pitch and smaller diameter, will increase RPM (spinning your tires) and lower the Torque value, in application and in the formula HP = Torque x RPM.
Torque = Force (HP) x Radius Distance (propeller or engine’s connecting rod wrist pin to crankshaft’s center).

Therefore without the benefit of shifting to higher gears in a boat’s application, the Torque value is more important in the boat’s setup equation, than in an automobile.

Lots of combos tried in offshore but till the Lambo v12 nothing could make enough torque so our favorite Chev that came out first pretty much outlived them all till now
Remember diesels, 1.5 cap bonus when boosted, couldnt get on the plane then got gears then got banned

( ok QC4v is a bit more modern and lots of other stuff)

let me summarize your post for the others...

how much torque you have at 5252 is the real story
take 2 800hp engines but different.
One has hp peak at 6000rpm (with a torque peak of about 800ftlbs at 5252) the other at 11000rpm so at 5252 the 11000 engine has 400hp and about 400ftlbs if its lucky, wont pull the skin off a rice pudding...
it would make a good outboard though...

Please tell me nobody was going to put a 1.5ltr BMW F1 engine in a class 1 boat coz they are 1000hp?

Rotary John
08-16-2020, 10:53 AM
I seem to recall HP= torque x RPM/5252. so your 800 ft-lb engine would have 800 HP @ 5252 and 600HP @ 6000RPM ? . your other engine then would have 400HP at 5252. Me thinks w/o actual HP or torque curves your just blowing smoke. I know Jackie is for sure blowing smoke.

Powerboat and Rotary John, thinks for the replies. I am still digesting your information with some Gatorade.

Hopefully the sage from Britain will stop blowing smoke (and fix those leaky piston rings). And then he can clarify the HP vs Torque controversy. I mean heck, I stuck my neck out there.

Jackie if you are low on Compression, try drinking some Gatorade. The University of Florida developed the beverage, as an energy (hydrating) drink for their student athletics.

with that formula you know a 3.5 ltr F1 engine ( at twice the rpm) cant do the job of a 8.1 ltr v8 even if they have the same HP number, its all about the torque in a heavy boat

OK< HERE GOES. I am not an engineer and never have or pretended to be . All i have is a fundamental understanding of the internal combustion engine and a modicum of common sense.
So it comes as a surprise to me that all my brainy friends out there who pontificate loudly on the differentials in RPM AND TORQUE ? Seem to have so little respect for CAMS !
Now you can take all the torque in the world, but it dont mean a damn thing unless you tie into the right motor, with the cam suited to its purpose. With the correct gear ratios to suit the prop, that is the correct diameter and pitch To the set up.
Let me give you a simple example.
We had been running the cosworth in Europe for three months, quite successfully i may add. Gradually getting it up to near the 125 mph mark. The whole set up was about right, we were running with the factory motors.
This was only ever going to be a short term programme (one season). Bedford DAVEY wanted to see the boat run in Parker, so he paid for the boat to be shipped out there .
Ian Hawkins, Malcolm Tyrell, Keith Duckworth and i went to Havasu to test the boat, just to make sure everything was Tickety Boo.
Damned boat would not even get on plane . Wallowed around like a beached whale. turned out that GG and KD had decided to run “Longer gears” in an attempt to make the gearcase last half distance ,
( in the event it went for six and a half of the seven hours, just Couldnt get the gearcase off to change it. THATS WHERE THE OTHER HALF HOUR WENT)
Bob Hetzel chopped a half inch off the diameter, result was an anvil that would have wound its way through concrete and two foot thick logs without fear of ever getting a nick in it. Certainly the ugliest wheel i have ever seen.
Did push the boat up on plane , and run around 120, but it didnt have the grunt out of the turn.
was a case of the right prop, married to the correct gear ratio , from a motor with the right cam to suit the given torque . SIMPLES ???

Hey PILGRIM, its like this. The V8 COSWORTH comes in many Guises, In 1978 it was winning everything and had even surpassed Ferrari in outright Victories in formula 1. The F1 version was pulling over 800 hp and 18000 rpm. Good for a one and a half hour race (maybe) before a rebuild.

One i had was the Le Mans Version Peaked at 10000 rpm but would run 48 hrs at 85000 giving 400 hp
Indy version was blown and pulling over 1100 hp. so you see its horses for courses.

Jackie: 800 HP @ 18000 RPM = 233 lb-ft of torque
400 HP @ 8000 RPM = 262 lb-ft torque
You didn't say what RPM the indy engine ran but assume 10000 RPM @ 1000 HP = 525 lb-ft torque
So as you can see its all about torque. It's why the diesels are baned all over. 500 HP @ 1500 rpm = 1751 lb-ft of torque.
Clarence Blanchard was defined torque as the effort required to push down a morning hard on to hit the toilet bowel.
