Down the short road to Portsmouth we rode,
to jump on the fast cat to France
was a hell of a trip
and the cat didn't flip
----------------------------ance?

Anyone care to finish it?

Sir Ernest didn't do as well with the 'Endurance'---

Pilgrim tells me these "Fastcats"are Australian--------probably made in Taiwan or Korea , there's not much comes out of OZ anymore except dead didgeridoos, old abo's and unwanted muslims --------even WARBY stays home these days!
the ozzie business is http://www.incat.com.au/
I think fastcat is South African?

Heading for home-------HOLIDAYS, FRIENDS, AND FISH STAY FRESH FOR THREE DAYS---------that's it, after that it's time to get back to normal !
No doubt about it, this is the only civilised country in the world where a man can stop the car---------walk to the front-------hang out his tallywhacker and take a leak, cheerfully waving said object at passing motorists without fear of being arrested or prosecuted------------this is France !
A man and his piss are sacrosanct!
Gendarmes do it-------farmers do it----- fire men on their way to work do it.
Another thing-------Frenchmen do not wash their hands after pissing !
Wonder if I'll make it past border control on the way back ?

On the fat fast cat heading for Portsmouth--------made it past customs on the frog side-------they didn't even look twice-------guess there's an air of respectability about the trusty Lexus that even covers my flaws.
Should be home around 20:00 hrs.
Will be picking Murphy up from the cattery early in the morning--------she is going to be so pissed with jilly and me for putting her in a cats home for three days !
You should be getting the two concepts JOHN S. very soon--------we come a long way since the pony express----------mind you I could have bought Texas for what they charge postage these days.
Gary and the big boat are heading for NJ, whilst Mark and Craig are heading up the road a piece to cocoa beach with his new ride-------the Spectre Boats P1. He's got sister Kate in the side seat as Sis Nav. Bet there's a few ruffled feathers in that rig come Sunday night!

Thats the spring break over and done with---------was made necessary by the fact we had to install all new central heating, which meant tearing up all the floorboards for three days! That's the reason we had to put Murph in a safe place. We got a text to say the task was completed successfully!
Guesswhat---------it's bloody Thursday again tomorrow---------less than two weeks and we're into June. ,!!

jackiewilson

Went to pick up Murphy from the cattery-------opened the door to stroke her------she leapt over my shoulder and was chased by the resident dog across a field and up into a very tall oak tree. Her who shall be obeyed was not best pleased I can tell you. Spent the next hour trying to get Murph back down----------was told in no uncertain terms I was thick, stupid, thoughtless and had no mother or father ! Alls well that ends well, cats curled up on the rug in front of the fire and I'm still in the doghouse---------life is never dull around here.
Craig and Kate and Mark are heading to St. Cloud for the First P1 race of the season---------I was under the impression it was Cocoa beach---------it's not !
Ill tell you how it's going as soon as I find out.
Came away from the car boot empty handed, must be losing my touch.
We finally got all the rain we need , just like always, never rains unless it pours.
Things should be back to normal today ------had a friend take up the rest of the carpet in the shop, should be able to keep the floor neat and tidy now.

Sat up waiting for Mark to call, tried calling him on FaceTime but he's not answering, so my guess is the day has been something of a disaster. I talked to Craig earlier in the day, told me the boat was a rogue. Spun out in practice and was unpredictable though he wasn't unduly pushing. First time out with his sister, so he's not going to be driving it over his head.
Picked up a really nice tin travelling chest----------had all the P&O stickers along with an old Orient Express label for a tenner. Will do nicely for shipping all the concepts I have backed up ready for shipment to florida.
Finished the four outboards for the V bottom ---------and the motors for the big all metal cat. Had a good steady two days in the shop, made big inroads into the finishing of the concepts.
Now the short nights are here, it's nice to rise with the dawn chorus, a cup of tea in bed, out in the shop by seven thirty. Her Majesty seems to have forgotten the restricted hours scenario ., which Im pleased about .

Keeps spinning out cause there's no skeg in the water, and/or prop bite. Problem with these stepped V-bottoms is, the drive or outboard actually has to be installed much lower, till the aeration doesn't affect the slip-stream so much. Its sucks, but nature of the beast. Not tell'n ya anything ya don't already know, right Jacko? lol

i would would normally agree with you Fuji, but Craig set up ten of these boats with the new Mercs on until he had them all running within a gnats whisker of each other, never had a spin out !
Damn boats are super critical about engine height------and angle of dangle
My gut reaction was he had the motor jacked too high, but he assured me he had it set the same as the rest.
Just to pour salt in -------he had an electrical problem that kept him out of running two heats.
When was the last time you heard of a Merc with an electrical problem? Especially a brand fire new lump ? This 2017, not the 1960's.
Im sure he'll have it all sorted for the next race----------if not by this afternoon.
Reason I didn't hear from them--------all the phones were down ( like they always are when you're having a crap day).

I though they used stepped hulls so it was better for the spectators?

jackiewilson

No Fuji, Craig doesn't KEEP SPINNING OUT ------he did it just the once, he's been running top flight offshore competition including winning three world championships, most of those races were in stepped hulls. He does have a wealth of experience, a modicum of common sense, and a pedigree second to none. He set up each one of the P1 boats so that the racing was fair and square for each driver.
Unfortunately he suffered his first non finish ever due to an electrical problem.
somebody out there suggested it was the safety switch in the control box and therefore not a Mercury problem--------er, excuse me, since when did any outboard function without a control box ? No good trying to wash your hands, stand back and say "it's not my problem"---------- if the motor don't function due to the electrics, then it is a Merc problem ! It was not a control box problem !
It will be all sorted before the next race-------just pisses me off when I hear that "Not my fault" talk.

Decided to give the WEBER a birthday treat yesterday-------took out the grill and scraped all the goo from the kettle ---------unfortunately I managed to wrench my shoulder muscle in the process, left arm now just hangs useless, No fool like an old one.
Last week in may and summers almost upon us------my favourite time of the year-----I do like a bit of warmth on my shoulders.
get the last three jabs this week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, then I'm good to go for the next ten years. Must confess to feeling a bit sorry for myself every time I come out of the surgery.

Tried to start using the arm but to no avail, damn thing won't function and gives me the "Gyps" with every movement
Fell off the roof trying to rescue the damned cat some fifteen years ago------fell awkwardly and broke a load of tendons, wound up in hospital for a couple of weeks after having them all stitched back together. Well, it's right on the same spot and I could do without it !
Guess I'll have to learn to be a lot more careful in future, could be time to slow down.

Arm is much worse today------really have made a mess of things. Arm in sling, hurts like buggery. Hospital appointment tomorrow for an ultra scan !
Just as the nice weather gets here--------it's a real bummer. Got a couple of tin chests to pack up all the finished concepts in.
Most of them are florida bound anyway ! It's cheaper to send ten items weighing in at around fifty kilos ( something like $150).

Hi Jackie - Guess I've been quiet for way too long. I think my Old Fart brain just gets tired. Worked for Kiekhaefer & attending college all through the 1960's. After retiring from 30 years in USAF/ANG 20 years ago, "working" at Jacksonville Museum of Science & History for 3 years, working for Duval County Public Schools as Fire Safety Inspector for 15 years, I will finally retire on July 7, 2017. Iris has lots of work for me to do at home. Maybe I will just pretend to go to work. Nah, that won't work! Never "planned" anything in life. I just lucked into everything and totally enjoyed every bit of it. Life is good!!! I think I still have a few years left to just enjoy that. Take care of that arm. I hope you can still use the other arm to lift a toast to all OFF's.

Still think about you often Stavros----------life is good, you got that right, we have to live every moment like it's the last. Like all the old farts, we are survivors, we enjoy being us, it's what we do, it's what we've done all our lives.
July 7th was my sainted mothers birthday, if you've got her hanging around, nothing can touch you.

All the news today is about all the kids slaughtered at the Manchester arena------what sort of sicko could possibly do harm to a bunch of school kids at a music concert ?
I am not usually a vindictive person, but if the west has the capacity to wipe out all the terrorist training camps in the Middle East , then so be it.
President Trump doesn't need my permission to do it, but if he does, he has my blessing.

Had time on my hands to reflect on the great times I've had in my life-------not often I can sit back and do nothing except "Remember" .
So, on reflection, I think I must be one of the most fortunate individuals to ever draw breath with the way things "Lucked out"as my good friend Stavros puts it.
Every time I get together with the old farts I think to myself--------this is as good as it gets Jacko, hanging out with all the living legends from the boat racing world.
Those that never made it this far always come up in our conversations. Some died on the water------some succumbed to sickness-----some were lost going to and coming from race meetings, but they were part of that crowd of men and women who MADE IT.
I was lucky to have met many of these legends.
While there is still time, and before our memories get lost forever in the annals of time, would be nice if we could find a ghost writer and narrate as many experiences we've had and the people we met whilst we're still alive and kicking .
Me myself won't be at the old farts get together in November , but there's enough of you going to start the ball rolling and get your memoirs down on paper. Just start a notebook, or put it on your dot dot, or laptop or smart phone
. One thing none of us old farts can afford to do is. PROCRASTINATE.

Another uncomfortable night, told her who was nexttoei was hurting--------by 9:45am I was in the doctors surgery being attended to by a gorgeous South African lady doctor---------told her I'd been racing in Loch Vaal----------Voila, we were buddies in no time flat.
She gave the arm and elbow some close scrutiny and decided all was not well and I needed an urgent X ray----------thirty minutes later I was in the Bognor Regis Hospital.
Lady in charge paid particular attention to my elbow, told me it was not in good condition!
I duly informed her I had a bad case of "MOLINARI ELBOWS" which I had managed to live with for the last forty years----------to emphasise the point I placed my other elbow on the glass topped table and proceeded to roll the elbow around a little which produces a sound not unlike walnuts being ground under a stone roller. She reached for a cardboard puke bowl and asked me to "stop doing that", so I duly obliged .
Then had to explain how years of banging elbows on the combing of a tunnel boat led to the splintering of elbow bone tissue------etc.
Due back at the surgery to have the penultimate stab in the arm at 1:30 pm. , last one's on Friday when things should be getting back to a bit of normality ----------it's important I eat some bear before long!

I think the poem "IF" by Rudyard Kipling would seem appropriate at this time!

Finally got a little movement in my left arm, which I'm grateful for. Was beginning to fear the worst, but my fears are unfounded.
Should be back in the saddle by Monday next. Not used to sitting on my arse all day long. You can only fiddlefart on the iPad for so long before you get bored to tears with it. Love the old S&F site to bits, but I'm not married to it---------couldn't do a Fujimo ------I got lots of other things going on in my life !

Our P/M has told Pres. Donald to screw himself, due to the FBI leakages over the Liverpool killings. He in turn got the right hump and turned on all the NATO leaders and told em all its time to start paying your dues. You owe billions in overdue payments and there's no more cash for NATO until you pay up.
Bravo Donald, about time they were told the facts of life----------alliances think they are untouchable, your boy just showed 'em, they're NOT.

ME, I JUST THINK the American people voted for a new president-------then get behind him and support him-, let him do his job, --------he's there for four years at least, nothing anyone can do to alter that, so live with it.
AMERICAN dollar is strong, wall streets healthy------the country did not fall apart as some predicted.

Big improvements overnight with the shoulder, got a smile on my face for the whole human race ----------didn't someone once write a song -----------

Ok Gary, this is how the P1 thing works. There are three options.

For around $100,000 you can buy a P1 ready to run.
For around $40,000 you can rent one and use your own sponsor.
For around $15,000 you can run one for the season using a designated sponsor.

Basically it's a one design series------this season Mercury motors are being used.
Speeds are in excess of 70 mph and all boats are set at the beginning of the season to run as near identical speeds as it's possible to get.
Craig managed to set up 10 of the boats but never got around to sorting his own for the first race.
This coming week will see him prepare the rig for next weekends race.

Don't feel like sending any more concepts anywhere until I get some answers.
Been photoing a load of my machines that I don't think lm going to ever use again including my silent compressor, mig/tig inverter welder, argon bottles , gloves and helmet------the whole shebang. Used it four times in as many years and it's taking up valuable workspace, it has to .go.

45 mph-------once I got that Merc 500 up to 46 mph , I left everyone for dead!
Most I ever saw out of the merc was 47-------I got the Carniti up to 48-------finally got the Konig to show a good clean 50 ! I tell you, that was seriously fast and a race winning speed!

Jackie. I was running Merc 500s about that time over here. We were all pretty much running 55mph or so. Were the boats you ran all sit down and about how much did the weigh.

jackiewilson
06-01-2017, 12:46 AM
We were all running two up flat bottoms, Rya at that time decreed we should not run single sweaters until much later---------even so --------it was years before even they ran 50 mph.
We had heard the French, Italian and Dutch were running ridiculous times--------but in the early Paris six hours, the English always won--------we could always run sloppy water, the continentals were set up for top speed only and spent most of the time reaching for the sky. Used to go over the channel to Spain, Germany, Portugal, France, holland and Italy and Monaco,------we always brought the main trophy home.
We also ran stock motors with a club foot, half inch above the bottom with a touch of angle of dangle.
Michegan, Cary, Mercury or Record or Radice props-------that was it, the world of runabout racing in a nutshell.

Eventually I had my SD McCall running 62mph with a 500 in 1975. That boat weighed about 580lbs gross. I have heard that later in the 70s they got even faster with those motors.

The 16' Levi's were the pick of the field--------the very best of these with a 100hp Mercury ran 60 mph at best!
Wasnt until the appearance of the tunnel boats early '64 that speeds went a tad more than 70 mph!
Top talked about speeds were a bit like Serra's size of fish, full of mystery and imagination!
Way back in time ---------a guy reached the magic 30mph and then lied about it-------he said he saw 35 on the clock !,,!!! It's been going on ever since!

jackiewilson

Took a while for the Americans to learn the value of racing in Paris, Nowhere else is it so critical to have your set up exactly right. It's a compromise between the tortoise and the hare, lose a bit of handling for top speed at your peril-------a boat with a thirty gallon fuel load and barges running both ways on the course, is a different animal to one that's empty, flighty, and wants to bite you on the bum.
Today most drivers are adept at setting a boat up and running within their capabilities. That is of course until somebody wants to get by you and then the adrenaline kicks in -------that's when the trouble starts !
I believe it's called "RACING".

It amazes me when you look at horsepower and speed from the old days.
You could own a 70 and say my boat does 70mph
You could own a 100 and say my boat does 100mph
And today we have 300hp+ and we go a bit faster?
I wonder if the air or water has become more viscous in the last 40 years?

There ya go again Pilgrim, not exactly lies, but nowhere near the truth either-----my very first race boat was a 15' Derry with a 700 ( 70 hp.) Mercury -------on a good day and only lying a bit-----downhill with a tailwind--------open one eye and wince , there it was-------agood clean 50 !
Wasn't until the second generation of tunnels that anything like a 100 mph with a 100 he was achieved.
Michael Werner ran 145 in the mid seventies with a 200 hp. 2.5 .
GG and the Karlson with a V8 400+hp reached 160 ( big FECKIN deal)?
After the Jim Merton episode, Mercury wisely kept away from record runs for the next fifty years.
To the best of my knowledge, Mercury have never tried for an outright WWS outboard record--------no mileage in it for the risks involved.
Butler would be the man to ask!

So to answer your question Pilgrim------both air and water have become "Less Viscous over the last 40 years!

This will make you laugh-------just received a RED ALERT from the hospital--------report for another X Ray immediately! DO NOT DRIVE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE-------You have a badly fractured elbow.
Guess it's the first time they ever saw the infamous "MOLINARI ELBOW" syndrome. Let you know what transpires. Me, I feel fine!

OK, now I get it-------straight line -------flat calm ------hang em out to dry stuf ?
All the races in England were five bouy circuits ---------most had a wicked right hander, times around the one twelve, one twenty mark.
No way could you ever get anywhere near sixty miles an hour with a fifty Mercury, not even with a firework up your rectum and a 100 pound boat!

Not unlike the blue fin hulls (originally Sid Craft) that we ran in '58/62----- we had two up in the boat and ran closed circuits --------by 1962 I was running a Koenig ------5 mph quicker than the Merc so was probably running the low 50/s. I also had a lot neater gearcase than the clubfoot .

Last weekend they set up camp at the Lowestoft and Oulton Broad Racing Club--------not a lot you can do about them if they decide to reside in your back yard-------no matter how illegal it is. Buggers nearly ruined the bank holiday weekend meeting.

Many years ago they set up camp in my front field and fell about laughing when I requested they sling their hooks. Phoned a few friends and set up the skeet traps--------aimed them straight over the caravans-------you know, it took the best part of 200 12 gauge shells before the last one left.

Not like that nowadays-------we are under the thumb of Brussels and the EU, migrants, muslims and bull mastiffs have more rights then the residents.
Long ago we had a system, we could make laws and enforce them. We had a police force that upheld the law-----we did not have to bow down to anyone, we were a free nation. But that was before we joined the EU and all our laws were overruled by Brussels-------.
So, we had a referendum and voted to leave, take back our country and decide our own destiny. Problem is, to do that, Brussels wants to bankrupt my country first.
We are not even allowed discussion, only threats.
Did we really win the last World War, only to see the country ruined financially by bureaucrats and the very sick EC.

According to EU law any person can park anywhere they like in the U.K. Without fear of reprisal or intervention providing they are a citizen of the community--------uk law is overruled . And if you take the law into your own hands or protest, uk law comes into force. It's called catch 22. Should the offending person decide to take you to court, then they can apply for legal aid ( and will get it) !

All I said was put an outside bet on him, if you don't want to------ I can live with that!
I have never ever pretended to know the first thing about rag and stick racing.

he joined someone elses team ( not saying he didnt contribute)and they just out spent the Kiwi's with continued boat development to catch up once they had the one day lay day.
Big difference now is he has had to create and run a team from scratch, first few races it was all about him, seems to have sorted that out as the in-boat chatter gets published for all to hear, so seems he got the message.
Saying that he competed and won the lead up series in the smaller boats so everyone very surprised they didnt sail as a team for the first few races.

PS all his sailing medals are single handers and known for his temper tantrums.
We have a saying in sailing now, "Doing a Ben" known worldwide
Just before the last olympics he got out of his boat ( on TV) and climbed onto the press boat to thump someone ( he didnt) as he didnt like the interference. ( he won the race)
In sailing you get a rule 69 ruling, no competition for 1 year worldwide. You get it for bringing sailing into disrepute etc, because he is sailings darling he got away with it as it would have ruled him out sailing in the olympics. The sailing community worldwide cried foul.
Anyone else would have been in the sin bin, so you can see why not everyone thinks he is Peter Perfect

Trouble is, just like every sport in the world, to make an omelette you have to break eggs. Mr. Nice Guy never won anything.
Tradition has it that the brits will never win the AC--------we have to admire Benny Boy for even trying, to just raise the ninety mill is a miracle on its own.
Top end sailing is for the very rich and always has been--------sailing cannot always be the domain of Eton, Harrow, and Oxbridge.
Brits do like to get behind the underdog----if you are not born with a silver spoon then Joe Public will love you all the more1.
I know nothing of sailing protocol `---------me myself have had issues with fellow drivers and chased them out of the pits, just because i disagree with someone does not make me a bad person or mean i should be banned for a year just because i threw a wobbly.
Looks like its what i always feared------sailing is for the chosen few! The wealthier you are the redder the carpet. Upstarts are not allowed to actually win----------put on a good show by all means------but you are not supposed to actually win if your not one of US.
Wonder what would happen if you actually took a piss over the side and were photographed doing it------would that constitute "bringing the sport into disrepute".
Often wondered why i never took up sailing--------thanks for clarifying it---------i believe the colonials call it "born on the wrong side of the tracks" Pilgrim.

Blowing a hooley this morning-------black as newgates knocker with heavy rain. " so much for the long dry spells and threatened drought and "Flaming June"
Don't have a single concept on the go at the minute.
Do have a shed load of tools and equipment up for grabs-------.downsizing to what's appropriate for an octogenarian "curmudgeon". Tried sunbathing in my posh sun lounger last-week, ------managed a couple of hours before I got bored and sunburnt-------
Did pull a fresh plank of hardwood off the pile------just in case I get the urge! Damn things are 8' long and 30" wide-------two and a half inches thick and weigh some 120 lbs, could be the reason I've got a raging backache. Really must learn to delegate heavy jobs to those that are capable.
Lizzie stayed over last night, she was fine until 4am, then decided it was time for everyone to get up, it's now 7am and I'm knackered already!

Good job your keeping me informed Pilgrim---------I live twenty five minutes from Portsmouth ( BAR/s home base) and there's very little TV coverage of the Americas Cup!
As in all sport it's always the unexpected that can change a result ------hard luck for the New Zealand team but manna from heaven for BAR.

Finally got permission to drive again-------- doctor took a lot of convincing about the Molinari elbows. its only when your not allowed to drive that you realise just how necessary it is in this day and age. Fuji tells me there's a lot of rain juice or God piss as it's known in Outer Mongolia come down in Florida this last week. Welcome to the proper world, that's what I told my son and grandkids------told 'em it can't be sunshine and lollipops all the time-------nine out of ten's not a bad average.
Been over a week since i set foot in the workshop-------one day, I'll learn that I'm not supposed to do things I used to do when I was 84.
Last time I did the car boot sale I picked up a box full of plastic that bears a close resemblance to a 1928 blown Racing Bentley-------see how it goes together before I replicate the thing in wood, tin and leather. I'm not gainfully employed at the moment, so I do have time to stop and smell the roses.
Been flat on my back for over a week now-------- feeling very sorry for myself!

You probably don't remember him but Ray Hewartson from Windermere Records Week passed away on the 1st of June. We have the sad task of going through the mountains of stuff he had on Records Week, Bluebird and the Campbells. This was hung on his wall in his sitting room and while it's a little faded I'm sure he would like you to have it. We also have the records list from that year (I think) correct me if I'm wrong but it says Jackie Wilson OZ at just over 122 mph from memory as I don't have it here at home. Techteam376998i am so sorry to here of Rays demise--------the Windermere team were '" Just always there" we all took them for granted , from reception to signing in, launclng, recovery, timekeeping, Drinking. At the Low Wood --------That Autumn meeting at Windermere was one of the highlights of my family's boating year. Somehow I always imagined it would go on for ever, but then I never thought I would ever feel any older than the twenty I felt all the times I raced, Now at 85 I'm trying to nail that bastard "time thief " who stole the last 50 years while I wasn't looking.
Yes it was a tad over 122------ Later that year Duckworth got the Harmsworth for his lnnovations to boat racing.
A young lad by the name of Richard Noble was touting for sponsorship for a hairbrained attempt at the world land speed record, I asked him if he had ever travelled over 100 mph, No, but I know a man who has. I told him he would never get his "THRUST" project off the ground
I have been known to get things wrong !
Did you know that the DFV Cosworth is the motor that delivers the fuel in his latest "BLOODHOUND " attempt ?
i would be honoured to have the picture of "THE COSWORTH "

I know it's a bit late but please accept my apologies for never having told you what a great job you did for a bunch of powerboat drivers over the years who never showed any gratitude for your efforts, as I said before, it was "Expected" and you lot never failed!.
Give my regards to those that are still left standing from the "Windermere" team.--------is little JOHN still a going concern?

jackiewilson

I don't have many pictures of "THE COSWORTH" and I did not even know that one even existed.
It wasn't until forty years on I realised the significance of what Duckworth -------Dick Scammel-----Mike Costain------Ben Rood------Malcolm Tyrell------Ian (HAWKEYE) Hawkins. Bob, my faithful mechanic who spent six weeks living at COSWORTHS -------Chris Hodges-------Phil Rolla who never charged me for a single prop and a bunch of folk in Northampton including Patrick Castell who just believed! We competed with the two factories who were the backbone of boat racing and won (sometimes). Pat Frewer and Dennis Stacey at South Western Marine helped with the stern drive.
A special thanks to Gloria on the switchboard at COSWORTHS who could always get a hold of Kieth even when he was unavailable to the rest of the world.
Very few folk know of the ongoing relationship between Mercury-------the unlimiteds-------offshore------the legal side of the Ford----Cosworth------Cart and Indy series, except to say, the waters were well and truly tested with the help of "THE COSWORTH".

Feeling deep in the doldrums this morning Pilgrim--------most of my hopes, dreams and aspirations have been shattered recently. Maybe I set the bar too high, but the sadness and disappointment I feel by being let down on so many fronts, political, sportif, educational , I find it's all a bit much.
I know exactly what's coming-------the night of the long knives-------misguided mother Teresa is due for the chop and thereby lies the first problem. There is not a single Tory politician capable of taking her place. Boris is making noises about running for PM --------that's like having "The Mouse" running for president ! But even more ridiculous.
We have an opposition leader who lies through his eye teeth and promises utopia but hasn't got an inkling of finance------
Our future leaders in the guise of university students who think the world owes them a living and they should be educated for free and not pay for anything before coming out into some of the highest paid posts in the world--------er, Sorry university students------remember "KENETIC ENERGY" ! For every action , there is a reaction, ---------------then there's the old adage--------what goes up comes down,-----you reap what you sow. Literature and history are full of such phrases.
My sainted mother was a very wise old Yorkshire woman ------one of her all time favourites was "you don't get out for nowt" . She taught me the basics, if you want a bike, get a paper round, when you have enough money saved, go get your bike--------- once you have the bike, maintain it , look after it, cherish it, because you earned it. Then you graduate as your ambitions increase, "mum, I need a motorbike" ------son, you do not need a motorbike, you want a motorbike. When you wanted a bike, remember what you had to do ? Well nothing's changed, save enough money, sell the beloved bike, work still harder and you will get your motorcycle.
I never forgot those early lessons--------if you can't pay for it------ you can't have it. I taught my own kids the same lessons.
Then along came plastic--------you can have anything you want in this world------sign here! Suddenly Joe Doakes is in debt that will take him a life time to pay off!
Me myself have one debit card-------before I can buy anything, there has to be enough money in the bank to cover it. I wouldn't even have that, except in today's world , you are a non person without a plastic card.

Original sit sit up and beg 18' timber Molinari, one of the last to be built at Angelo's Como shop before the move to Torriggia. The wooden stollage would fit any trailer-------Balbi was a good Italian trailer.
Most of us took our own trailer and any old boat to get past border controls that were in force.
If it could be bought for under $10,000 then it might be a viable proposition-------any more than that would require a serious enthusiast --------the 1970 17' would be a much more disireable proposition, specially with a cow bell!

Amazingly clean, well stored, original boat... And it should stay that way, for historical value.

Id go along with that Fuji--------every 18' Molinari had its own wooden Stollage------I believe that was the platform the boat was built on originally. Very few boats stayed straight and true for long due to badly fitting trailers.
Boat racers are not big on history------most boats were dumped after a couple of years--------boat design was very rapid after the mid 60/s and a three year old boat in the bigger outboard bracket would be considered "obsolete" and non competitive. Specially amongst the factories.
If we could look back at some of the "Bonfires" at Oshberg-------most of us would burst into tears today.
I bought a Jones full tunnel KT with a big block Keith Black motor, fully rigged and on an all aluminium trailer for $3,000---------- there was a choice of six !
I wonder how many of those are left today ?

When Mercury pulled the plug on Renato and cleared out the Torriggia factory of all the motors I just happened to be there.
Roy Ridgell was in charge of the operation--------there was one large truck to take everything away-------there was no way all that equipment was going to fit in that truck,
End result was, hundreds of items were dumped in the lake------it was rumoured to be bottomless, and nobody was environmentally friendly in those days.
i suppose we are all guilty of not caring that much ( at the time) for the history of our sport.

Fuji, I'm sure you have many pictures of the Torriggia factory -----the Mercury workshop was on the lowest floor just 6/8 feet above water level----- there's a walkway all the way across the front. Bottomless water i.e.: _miles deep!

Young Ridgell just posted a picture on Facebook of the Torriggia factory--------there was a sliding floor on the left hand side, boats were dropped into the water and then moored up at the dock which extended along the front!
There was only room for one trailer at a time to park outside the factory. Main road was level with the roof. Boats were craned up one at a time. Top floor was a marble tiled showroom which could hold about a dozen boats. Was very cellubrious and years ahead of its time. Was where Jeremiah Cetti built the original "TORRIGGIA BOATS". Mercury and Molinari were the Second tenants!

Weeks later two parcels turned up on my doorstep, one addressed to John, one to Mark but in one box. They made it to New Jersey where they were examined by customs and quote----"Resealed with care" and sent back to me.
Spent the last month trying to find out why--------nobody knows------I never lost my rag, I gently chased the problem to a half assed conclusion which involved me paying a fee of £7:95 to send the two parcels back to the USA.

You're right about the third printer Pilgrim, but not for the usual reasons. First printer lasted from the day Steve Job and Bill thingumijig started Apple. It's still up in the attic. Had to move on from steam power to WI--FI------------mistake, they don't make things like they used to. HP all singing and dancing Magical Wi-Fi printer gave up after a year and a day. Have to take my hat off to the clever buggers that designed that one. Gives a one year guarantee and it self destructs the day after and needs replacing.
Of course the price has come tumbling down-------for thirty quid, I can get a brand fire new all singing and dancing version and for another three quid you get the bells and whistles and Wi-Fi.

Cant see me and 3D getting along very well--------me and perfection don't recognise each other .

Con the perpetual renters to take loan to buy.

Bank sells it to a mate as not required to do public tender and has deadbeat tennent but not to worry.
New owner goes to council to say ok i leave tennent but council pay me, ok deal.
But house doesnt now meet min std for council house so money has to be spent.
Haha, council will loan you about 100k to renovate to make it meet requirements.
Great now i have cheap property, plus 100k and guaranteed rent.

Rent to buy is a great scam
Con the perpetual renters to take loan to buy.
Cant Pay back so bank forecloses
Bank sells it to a mate as not required to do public tender and has deadbeat tennent but not to worry.
New owner goes to council to say ok i leave tennent but council pay me, ok deal.
But house doesnt now meet min std for council house so money has to be spent.
Haha, council will loan you about 100k to renovate to make it meet requirements.
Great now i have cheap property, plus 100k and guaranteed rent.

Another day passed and still no word of how many died-------very strange-------latest count was 17 perished but that was 24 hrs ago.
Prime Minister------Lord Mayor of London-----idiot Corbin have all visited the scene------that doesn't happen unless there's a disaster.----------friend Corbin thinks he should take all property in Kensington and house the homeless !
Blame game is in full swing---------only people not guilty are ISIS. Many big names and wealthy landlords will be immigrating soon, as there will be inquiries and witch hunts.
Dont take a genius to know the cause and effect--------clever bit will be Why and how ? And are the rest of the tower blocks about to fall? Only takes a faulty dishwasher--------you don't even need a terrorist to get a blaze.

My good friends Tiny and Leo are visiting us for a few days. Girls are having a shopping day so Leo and I are going to BROOKLANDS The motor museum and prewar racetrack. Have never been before. See if I can't post a few pickies later in the day.

I got planes ,like Concord, and spitfire, .race cars, like Bentleys and Alfas and Duesenbergs race bikes like Brough Superior And Norton ! If you ever get a half chance to visit BROOKLANDS-------take it with both hands--------the sheer scale of the operation is mind blowing but I promise you will come away in a daze. Stood next to one of the truly great legends of motor racing history AN INDY DUESENBERG------actually got a piccie of me touching this masterpiece--------had a long discussion with the curator about Gary Cooper and Mauri Rose and realised the guy didn't have a clue what I was talking about. Turned out the engine was missing, but was currently being rebuilt (which I very much doubt)
Right up there was the crown prince of the whole motorcycle world. A J.A.P. Engined Brough Superior with a Brough sidecar-------looked like the day it came out of the showroom. Shudder to think of the value of that outfit----------more history attached to that marque than the rest of the bikes in the world put together.
spent five non-stop hours at BROOKLANDS and still only touched on the fringes.
Dont worry, got hundreds of pickies and dozens of stories to tell about this one!

John Cobb took this beast around the old track at BROOKLANDS in excess of 146 mph in 1924 !
Thats eight years before I was born------and close on a hundred years ago !
Just a leather hat and a pair of goggles to stop the flies getting in your eyes !
Worlds first purpose built race track------men like Campbell and Cobb had their own lock up garages and their own resident mechanic.
Four petroleum companies actually dispensed fuel from a single pump !
Birth of a sport or what ?

377784

Wonder what the price tag would be for this" DUESENBERG INDIANAPOLIS " no one could tell me the year, or the driver. If anyone out there has any idea------please let me know.

All in all, it turned out to be one of the most interesting and exciting days of my life !
If you got any questions for me------better make it quick, before I forget where I actually went!
Even at my age I can still be surprised !

Very strange, the fact that not one source of information has broadcast a "Missing List "of the London fire victims-------I have a nasty feeling in my bones this is going to become a political issue and the government is going to take the fall .
something has not been right about this from the beginning-------I dislike politics being used as a tool where tragedies are concerned.
Here of course there's a huge melting pot of trouble and tragedies, colour and creeds, poor people and Rich landlords and poor tenants.
So factual that Hemingway and Arther Millar could not have dreamed up this particular plot.

Last reliable count of the dead was 27 and rising, with expectations in excess of 100, make of it what you will. I can only see a powder keg, but I sincerely hope I'm wrong !

Would not be at all surprised if the government doesn't fall!

Now there are reports that the death toll has reached 58, but it's not an official figure------some suggest the figure will be well over 100. What's wrong with issuing a figure of the fallen and adding to it as you know for certain. It's all very odd. There are much deeper happenings than I have figured out yet.
one thing for sure Theresa May will not survive this---------she'll be gone inside this month-------trouble is , who is there to replace her ?

Without going into structural fire fighting tactics and strategy, that seems nuts. Where possible firefighters always try to reach the seat of the fire as rapidly as possible. I have had training and experience in aircraft, marine and structural fire fighting and 21 years as a Chief officer on these incidents. I find it hard to believe that London would not adhere to basic fire fighting practices. In this particular incident with a 6 minute response time and finding a fully involved building entry may not have been made.

One of our instructors was an ex fireman with 30 odd years and he said he had never saved anyone in a fire, they were dead before they got there ( just about always from the smoke) hence he thought the rules were based on that, why risk a firefighter when most things that catch fire in the UK is old crap.
There were certainly plenty of guys who said they should be doing it the USA way, get in and ventilate the fire to remove the smoke.

British firemen been fighting fires since the great fire of London 1664, I don't think they would take kindly to being told "HOW" to fight fires!
To me, a fire is a fire and a fireman is the guy who tackles it------I don't doubt there are different methods. Continueayed with the two offshore concepts-------however they turn out, one things for sure-----both are built out of beautiful figured English oak----------this is the stuff that you have to polish for upwards of 100 years before you get a decent "Patina"
It all started when Mark asked if I'd do him a decent desktop piece, binned a couple of the first attempts before sending him a half tidy concept which was looked on with disdain and a "best you can come up with" sort of look, so I'd better pull out all the stops on this one.

We have a thing called the Glastonbury Festival which takes place every year in the South West of England. Tonight I switched on the TV and lo and behold there was Barry Gibbs, last surviving Bee-Gee singing his heart out. Last time I saw him was on a Pan Am flight from London to Los Angeles in 1971. The four of them were traveling "cattle class" and carrying a shed load of kit.
Two weeks later I headed down the road to New York to see a gathering of folk singers and musicians at a site called "WOODSTOCK"--------- flower power was about to be launched.
A week before I had previously watched a fat kid with glasses thumping three sheets out of a piano at the Hollywood Bowl-------he was the supporting act to THE EAGLES ,his name was Elton John.

Never did get a single prop from any of the R/C boys-------guess they must have decided to hang on to them.
Picked up a crucible at the car boot sale sometime back, decided to cast my own ( only way I can afford them).

Those are the things Fuji--------little whizzers that fit on the end of the leg------right under the car plate.
Ive been done and gone a lot of research on these little buggers, oh yes, they're in plentiful supply, in almost any size. Problem is, you need to be in gainful employment earning big bags of gold at the end of the shift, OR, Rich parents, Win the lottery. Jump on the social bandwagon---------or go to the local car boot sale / flea market and hope you come across a sack of old props that some old model boatbuilders wife has just thrown out because the old boy turned his toes up. Remember the old adage---NO SUCH THING AS A FREE MEAL----------same thing with titchy props, if you do a quad installation that requires four props---------be prepared to pay a hundred bucks ! ( unless you go plastic)
Never seen such an awesome display of R/C props anywhere Fuji------why show just one picture of props when you can show seven collections--------no doubt about it FUJIMO--------you are the main man.

Did a cursory glance through fujimo's phoggies--------saw a picture of the old scimitar I bought in a hurry from Sandra Hook , just because I was pissed at Bill Brown.
Lapped him twice in the first hour------then he ran over John Hill in the SE-----John sank out on the course---------Bill sank in the pits, still hanging on to the steering wheel--------Chas Shooter pulled him out of the boat by his helmet. This was Amsterdam about '74------- Bill was driving The Miles boat VENUS,
No Phill, Dick never got in touch

We were there at como on a couple of occasions when Dick was there. He was "Nobby" though, always stayed at the Villa D Este, way out of our league, we slept in the camper!

Hey Pilgrim, so the Kiwis won the Americas Cup-------has to be a great boat, and a great team to pull that off. Congratulations to one and all------well done------don't they get the rights to call the shots as to where they will defend the title ?
Apparently there are 600 high rise apartment blocks in the UK-------all require sprinklers and cladding---------but like "Yesterday".
Lots of speculation, but no official death toll after the tower block inferno------ information is scarce-----I can't make out the problem here, but I still say it could bring down the government!
France and Germany are crowing, how they will make England pay dearly for the Brexit--------seems a hell of a long time since we bailed out both countries in the forties, ( for the second time ). Memories are short it seems.
I read it somewhere that France resorted to a "Revolution" in the 1700/s and brought in "Madame Guilotine " to settle the score-----so much for Equality------Liberty-------Fraternity .
All we ever wanted was our freedom, to make our own laws and decide how many immigrants we should house. To deport criminals as we see fit, without Brussels telling us IF we could.
We may have won the Second World War--------but we sure as hell never won the peace.

Rained most of the night--------lawns are looking green instead of like burnt hay-------sweet peas have been fragrant but with short stems--------all the weak and tiny apples fell off the tree.
Birds have just raised the second brood of chicks and we're well past midsummer.
Its Thursday tomorrow and another damn car boot sale.
Spent all morning doing the Arnesons--------and the trim tabs-------by noon my back was giving me grief so I called enough!
Kitchen goddess asked me to go into "Chi" with her, been a while since we went out together, quite enjoyed it really. Maybe there is life outside the workshop.
Got a text on Facebook from Bob Reynolds, boss man of "The Ospreys" power boatings rescue team------apparently they're holding a 50th anniversary dinner at the Belfry, one of this country's premier golf clubs, sometime in August-------I'll think about it, see where we're at in August.
Its Ivan's Go4it golf tournament on Friday, promised I'd take part in it. Usually it raise a huge chunk of cash which is used to buy various cancer fighting machines-----cant believe it's another year on since the last one.
Down comes the rain again------will need webbed feet or flippers if this carries on, told you Mother Nature has this habit of balancing things up!

Yep, master display, they had a better boat and sailed it better.
They also had lots more clever tecnology on it so a nice win to beat a technology company, Oracle.
Yes the winner makes the rules subject to the NY yacht club taking them to court which i think wont happen this time.
Race will be in Auckland
Boat type yet to be announnced.
The first challenger is some club in sicily but its luna rossa/ prada guy.
Winner and challenger have to agree the new rules but for sure this has been discussed for months prior just in case.

Been watching the news, are there any brits living in those towers?
I think the ozzies have some temporary houses in PNG, tropical paradise...

I still think the uk wont be paying anything.
N ireland will become rich as the new trading frontier if no single market access and just truck it over the border.
Close the fishing grounds, fishing booms and helps pay the farm subsidy.
Uk far better off in year or so.
Then the eu will invent a new status to allow non eu country to have access and beg the uk to join it so the germans can sell cars to the uk

Some things you got right Pilgrim------if there was a Brit living in the towers, then I never saw him, her or it !. Aussies used to buy up all the big town houses in EARLS COURT in the sixties------ Nobody wanted to live in Fulham or Earl's Court anyway was the pimple on the arsehole of London!
Irony of all this is "Dear Angela" ( Merkel) had to evacuate a whole tower
block in Cologne as the cladding was deemed unsafe----------wait until she examines the rest of the high rise buildings-------then the ka-Ka really will hit the fan.
Make no mistake, the uk will be paying something as that would be a first. All the European Commune thinks the EU is a cash cow to be milked until it drops dead !
Northern Ireland always hunts with the hounds and runs with the hare--------left hand never knows what the rights doing, and if the lips are moving----------you get the idea ? A trading frontier ? Your having a laugh Pilgrim-------the Irish don't trade------they spend------everything! Only country to make Greece look like a spendthrift Scotsman !
Last year they moved up from abacus beads to a calculator--------not ready for computers this decade.
Left to they're own devices the Irish will be at each other's throats in no time flat and blame it on the brits.
If we close the fishing grounds the world will scream FOUL and call on the UN for sanctions.
My opinion on subsidised farming is ---------do it like they do in New Zealand, make it pay or bugger off.
Unfortuately we don't have a car industry any more, we sold the goose------China, ( MG ) India, (Land Rover. Jaguar) Germany ( Rolls Royce, Bentley Cosworth) -------we should have done a Malaysia, 100 percent import duty!
Dont doubt for a minute things will get better------no way can the world get along without the English------by the way Pilgrim--------who was skipper of the New Zealand boat ? Just asking !

Chris, when you talk about "Seebold" it's always the PATRIARCH------the oldest, the old man, the cranky one, the wannabe golfer, mr grumpy arse himself ! Billy , Mr Bill!
Michael is "Michael Seebold"
Tim Seebold is "Timmy"
Billy Seebold Junior is "Little Billy"
To be known as "SEEBOLD" you have to earn that right, it's kinda passed down from generation to generation-------it commands respect and admiration in the world of powerboating, it was earned the hard way, just ask anyone who knows him. There are very few like him today.
i count myself very fortunate to be able to call all the Seebold's my friends, Bill, Lynne, Michael and Lori, Timmy, Little Billy and even Grandpa Seebold back in the day.
hes not hard to find---------lives in Fenton Missouri in the summer--------Naples Florida in the winter.
Yes, I do have his email, and his phone numbers, but I don't give them out. If you want to find him , you have to go to any of the F1 races stateside -------he's still a race boat fruit and nut case.

Bernies kid Petra is getting a divorce, ( as you do these days )----difference here is a little matter of the £500,000,000 her ex is wanting to share--------told ya Bernie, you only reap what ya sow !
Surprised Bernie hasn't brought in the big guns (colloquially speaking of course)------- Russky and Eytie mafia must be chomping at the bit to do the old boy a favour. Am led to understand ex husband is not in the rudest of health ? What's the betting he's about to get a whole lot sicker ?
Over 80 dead now with 23 families unaccounted for after the tower block fire. Will probably be another year before the final death toll is known-------there are no official lists of who actually lived there. Could have been five, ten or fifteen people in each apartment---------could be why everyone is keeping "schtum"
Craig and family are heading out to Sarasota today--------just hoped they managed to iron out some of the bugs they've been experiencing with this particular boat.
Daughter Kim took me downto the Chichester Yacht Club for lunch-------twice in two weeks, getting spoiled rotten lately.
Should have Marks concept ready to ship next week John-----decided to do Ron a fresh effort, when it's ready I'll send it to you for finishing-------it'll be a Schubert/Wilson effort -------should light up his face a little.
Suppose I could squeeze a Scotti/Rotory for Jimbo at a push, though he may not collect junk -------ask him next time you talk to him.!

Away for the next three days, so the workshops dormant for a while. Life goes on , the wheels keep turning, nothing stays the same. Takes me longer to get out of the car than it ever did, my whole body seems to be slowing down--------back aches if I pick up an empty paper bag these days, but the Quasimodo stoop has gone !
Just fifteen months ago I bought an HP Envy Wi Fi printer-------last week it puked. Course, naturally it's out of warranty--------bite the bullet------down to Office Supplies and dish out another £60 for a replacement. Roger the Bendix manifold is older than the 6 carb and was reserved for factory team motors only.
The six carb unit was made by Doc Hledin in Canada under the name MachMa A couple of years later. IF you can get the FI parts you ahouldnt need to adapt one to the other. Besides the new EFI stuff works just as good or better.

Seem to remember a guy called Alex who was always coming up with fancy six carb configurations. Mark was racing with Billy at that time ( early seventies ) I always thought he was a dentist -------met him in St Louis a couple of times.
Doc Morgan was another who was always goofing with carburettor systems--------I was never that impressed with the outcome.
Rich, wasn't there another "Doctor" ?---------Blair ? Believe he was at Dublin university---------maybe a two cycle expert !
Well, today's the day I get to swing a golf club again, just hope the back and the shoulder stand up to it. Got a two hour drive op to Hertfordshire---------breakfast at eleven-------Gun fires at one o'clock.
Big eats and presentations at eight------going to be a long day.
Sometimes I ask myself why the hell did I let myself get talked into this-------must be the mad fits of depression I keep falling into---------any normal right thinking person would stay home, spend the morning in the shop, have lunch followed by an hours nap then play catchup on the laptop. Suppose I lead quite a boring existence really--------but it suits me, and let's me grow old gracefully but kicking.
