here is a fellow brit.

And he was the british champion 1970, and jackie, tom or bob was not. How could that be?

Maybe jackie in 1970 was in florida at a off gathering :nonod: . No that cannot be why, musta been another reason  why bill was the 1970 champion.

shakey did play both ends against the middle in 1970 —-he was a mercury dealer in tewksbury and one of three drivers in europe “given” one of the new silo [twister] mercury motors. Case velden had one and i had the last one.
Idea was we would all campaign in europe ie; paris—berlin —amsterdam—milan . Anywhere there was a world championship race .
Bob glenn from a.p.barrus [ jonrude importer] was trying to get an omc team together ——-problem was all the decent drivers were running mercs including shakeybill. Bill was doing some testing with the big jonrudes and seeing which came out on top.
I have no idea what the deal was , but gg snatched the merc back and until the day shakey died at windermere he ran omc.
Now while he didnt do much internationally chasing the cake——- he did attend all the national events [don ross and i were chasing internationally all over the country] so he was the only serious contender for the national title .
Was a bit like stealing candy from a baby——but omc did need some publicity!!!!!!!

10pm and trying to kick out the old farts ——still that does tell me the event has been a huge success. Finally got rid of the last of the old farts. Its now 11-15 and i can put my head down with a feeling of great pride at having attended one of the greatest OFF meetings in its short history.
Will be posting piccies of the event and it’s people over the next few weeks 511940
Do have a fair selection of concepts that will be heading to Key West—sincerely hope that i wont be bringing any back with me.

An OFF gathering without Gene Lanham is like the Fourth of July without fireworks...it's just not the same...

Gene patented the Free Boat Wash..
511984

And developed an innovative way to flush out the engines...
511985

And above all, he knew how to fly a wing.
511986

And an offshore boat...
511988

And a race car...
511989

And a plane...

Monday —Monday —Just love that day .
Well i —slept well until a feckin horny rooster started getting amorous round about five am . Only down here in Key West could that happen. He will wind up on the Barbie if he keeps that racket up.
As usual its kinda busy here during race week. No room left -every square foot taken up with race boat personel and equipment.
Hell of a lot of building gone on all the way down the keys . Two new airports —one very aptly name MILLIONAIRE ?????
NOT TO WORRY —- i woke up again this morning — feeling fine —- still able to do my own thing [jjust slower]. Enjoying the sport that became my life —-along with my son —- in a million dollar RV thats paid for . What more can a man wish for ??????????
Best laid plans of mice and men !!!!!!!!! HURRICANE NICOLE set to hit soon — but not many forecasters get it right — lets just keep a weather eye out for the next few days — anything can happen . Watch this space !!!!!!

Nice to catch up with ARTHUR MOSTERT —Miles Jennings- BENNY ROBERTSON— DUTCHMAN who raced all over europe and Bristol and who’s name i can never remember .Met Rich LUHRS and Doreen . Tim SEEBOLD was due today but hasnt shown up yet. Cream of the crop in powerboat racing always seem to congregate down at Key West in November.
Conflicting reports on weather conditions — Wednesday race could easily have been held —-i have seen races in much tougher conditions than those today.
Poker run has been postponed until Thursday and a friday race with the final Sunday being mooted . All the balls are in the air. Just a case of suck it and see.

NO PRIZES FOR GUESSING WHERE I AM —— no its not his and hers —- its his and hisses
Used to be a nice expression He an and She an A quant Colonial expression for what mostly occur naturally between the male and female sex. Only Jackie Wilson and his Ribald Dry British wit Would come up with his and hissin while in Key West. But it is so true. Jackie is obviously a quick study on Key West culture. I remember Key West before it became Key Weird Back in the days when you can walk down Duvall Street and be guaranteed a fight every 50 or 100 feet. They used to call the saloons in Key West buckets of blood. Back in the 60s and 70s. The Navy was king not the anal retentive bisexual queens and hold drag races on Duvall Street. Sorry if I’m offending anybody but it is the truth. Thank God some common sense prevails and the tourists are safe. Whatever happened to BUM FARTO!! Happy trails To all the boat racers

It’s really amazing the new Mercury 12 cylinder engine friend of mine who is about 57 or eight it’s the next one at Palm Beach boat show last spring barely came up to the bottom of the pans. There were a lot of them at the show and at the Lauderdale show. TheyDon’t seem to be filtering down to the dealers, the boat manufacturers are getting them but in limited numbers. I personally would like to have seen one of the 4litre V8 OMCs from the past with the latest Etec fuel injection systems make a run at the market. Maybe not 600 hp but it easy 500 and still less weight I think the fuel economy for a giant two-stroke engineWould be very credible. Just my thoughts.

Hells teeth Pilgrim -you need a feckin fork lift in the tool box to play boats using those damn things .
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR !!!!!!!!
Remember omc. —- if you want to make a million —-better start of with a zillion !!!!!!!
big outboards killed off the inboards ——-electric cars catch fire and cant be put out ——remember that little old thing called KENETIC ENERGY ??????? FOR EVERY ACTION —THERE IS A REACTION .
Todays innovators simply have not thought things through—- we made a battery —- well whoopee- doo . Ie cost of making ——life —cost of renewal ——disposal—-results of disposal—.
Rational thinking gets lost in the elation of profits from manufacture —-pharmaceuticals are a great example —

Well—the party‘s over —time to call it a day .
Packed a lifetime into the last two weeks —- CANT BELIEVE YOU ARE 91– next person to say that i will cheerfully floor .
Got to meet up with old friends —KAREN MAY in particular —- was always someone special in my life -as was her brother bBRETT MAY. — he drove the cosworth with me in Parker [1979]. But for monumental feck ups beyond our control we could have done a hell of a lot better than we did . But friendships were forged that lasted a lifetime .
Grandkids won the worlds down in KEY WEST. ——
old farts are alive and well and likely to be so for years to come — even though ODELL HAD MAJOR PROBLEMS BEFORE HE FINALLY HEADED FOR HOME .
Sold 23 concepts —— AMBERJACK bought a whole load of concepts ——we still have to get together .
ARTHUR MOSTERT and me finally did a great deal together . I am now the proud owner of TWO ROLEX waches ———-. Benny Robertson ordered a concept .
Miles Jennings drove a bloody horrible boat well —it simply fell apart under him !!!!!!! He still finished a very creditable third behind the two HUSKI BOATS . Minute he gets his arse in a half decent boat -sparks could fly .
Marks gearcases were predominant in most of the classes —- as were the props he prepared for the winning boats .. after fifty years in the racing propellor field -he should be good !!!!!!
must do a new chapter called KEY WEST in the book . Will try and put it to bed this winter .
See RON HILL finished his book ——HAVENT seen or heard much about it , but i will get around to it soon . Sad Gene wasnt there at the OFF meeting —- dissapointed Richie powers never showed . But for those who did , a huge thank you —-there simply is not anything like it anywhere in the world — 39 showed and all enjoyed it immensely. Held over two days —-nobody wanted it to end and we were still trying to get them home turned 11-00 am.
A most memorable two weeks !!!!!!!

Maybe not in 10 years but certainly in the future we will revert back to being Blow boaters like our great great great grandfather‘s the pilgrims. You may be able to boat up and down the intercoastal with your electric motor but I don’t believe the technology Will have advanced far enough for offshore floating charging stations for your electric motor Technical advancements are a great thing but sometimes I wonder

Places tourist don’t go
Certainly there are several neighborhoods that come to mind. Liberty city in Brownsville. Redland Lucy‘s in Homestead The Ali baba bar in in Opa Locka Sistrunk Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale 15th St. in Pompano Beach Most to Riviera Beach and damn sure not Belle Glade Sorry for any Chamber of Commerce is that I may have disparaged

Charlie— reason i fell out with all the folk was simply because i told it the way it was . If i didnt like the way a person was acting i would simply say YOU ARE ACTING LIKE AN ARSEHOLE. If i didnt like someone a simple —I NEVER DID BLOODY LIKE YOU — always did the trick, they never bothered me again . Plus—i never ever had to apologise —-end of.

Brings back a lot of memories. Charlie must have run with a few GN friends of mine including Dave Stoller from Dave Stoller's Pass-a-grille Marine. Dave had the "Sorry 'bout that" and "Kinda sorry 'bout that" GN boats. On occasion his beautiful wife, Nancy, would drive one. Then there was Hugh James from Green Cove Springs and Gary King from King Marine Engineering in St. Pete. driving "Hot 'n Nasty." Wayne Dokken from Clearwater driving "The Magic Christian."

Gene That looks like the right hander at Havasu—- where all the timekeepers were located —-first time i met Molly and Kenny Ballou [lived in HIALEAH CAL.] YEAR WAS 1969. and Billy SEEBOLD .
Renato was racing „“MISS TITTY“. [i think].
Scotti won with a dually [ mike mullens owns it now]——-
Met Art Kennedy and his dad [Luther—i think] -he was racing a single RON JONES —ran very fast indeed until he blew it over.
Was there with DON ROSS. DEITER Schultze always ran pretty good at Havasu. Clive Curtis and James Beard ran there too.
I ran out of money very quickly and Don bankrolled the rest of the adventure.

A picture of an older Tommy Chandler he drove the GN 32 Boat when I owned it we chased Duff Dailey As hard as we could I think the only time we beat him was when he broke. Thanks to Doug Janish in the engines he built we were competitive most races. Tom Chandler was world champion and family J for a couple of years with a Hydro stream and a tower of power mercury. Thank you my good friend

I have to correct Jackie on one thing the black silk Mandela was owned by another character in GN boat racing named Bob Donahue who many people remember from South Florida racing. When I owned it it was re-painted red and ran under the name of mighty mouse because we ran small block Chevy‘s in it with either bud courier driving or Ralph Johnson. I did run the boat and a couple of local Caribbean Club races. The Rayson Craft GEN 32 as I explained was raced Bye Tom Chandler. Doug Janish built the engines for that boat. Joe Colt built the engines for the mighty mouse GEN 23. I just spent money.

Who could forget Mr. Stroller And the whole Saint Petersburg crew. Blackjack Withrow Gary King. Stoller‘s boat was named sorry about that because that was his favorite saying he was always telling Nancy sorry about that or when he show up at a race and he missed the drivers meeting sorry about that. Pass a grille Marina what is the West Coast headquarters Florida that is for the A.B. BA outlaw racing. David always came to the Caribbean Club for our boat races and we tried to reciprocate. Hugh James another GN Racer From the past good competitor built some fine boats I think he was involved with Ben Borden after Ben took over ownership of the GN 32. I remember the boat magic Christian and the driver Wayne. Gary King was like the Stan Erwin of the West Coast best engine builder around. So even though my memory may be a little off I do remember a long time ago

Phill ROLLA once told me that propellors are not an exact science . When i asked him why— he said too many mitigating factors !!!!!!!!!
I have watched my son beat the crap out of a 30 inch diameter five bladed prop[off a 90 foot Pershing] for several days .
Asked him if it was even worth trying to get it back to the original. He said „“at 75 thousand dollars apiece its worth a shot .
so i found a brass sculpture that depicts a couple of days in the life of a PROPMEISTER which i will give him.512594

Hell of a lot more to making a prop work than people realise .
My son Mark has nearly fifty years of experience in the manufacture —creation —upkeep—repairing —reworking propellors than any other person in the world .
He has done props for every winning team there ever was from outboard and inboard hydros over in Italy and the continent .
Done props for Seebold ——Jones——CAPPOLINI—— Pruett—— Betty Cook —— Rocky Aoki—-Ballesteros ——-.
He was always the last resort —— when tracers had tried everyone else —- then they turned to Mark for help ———still the same today .
RIVA—- SUNSEEKER —PERSHING——. When it wont work they all send for my son MARK WILSON because at the end of the day there is no substitute for experience and a life spent with marine propulsion .
you know what —i almost forgot —— when it comes to surface drives — he is also the very best trouble-shooter in the world —NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT—- BUT I DO .

Propellers were always the hardest thing to get right in racing. In 12 years of racing I had only 2 real good ones. The first one was from Olegator for my McCall which he later improved after I tore it up in a race. We won Nationals with that one. The second was a Bobby Soles stainless one. This was my only successful effort in propeller work. I wisely left the blades just as Bobby had finished them. My contribution was fabrication of an exhaust tube for this prop which helped with blowout and also made it a little faster. We broke the 5 mile record in SE and set a 1 Hour record in SD with this one.

I raced with RECORD decals on all my boats —- was always record as far back as i can remember — would have to ask Mark when Record was dropped , if it ever was .
Ron Hill filled me in on Rolla’s early background [which i didn’t know] . He was racing an ALFA-ROMEO engined inboard hydro when i first met him .
one of those bouncy things —where the pilot sits on the transom holding a two foot diameter four spoke steering wheel. I declined the offer of a trial run .
Was through him i met Jeremiah CETTI [Torrigia boats] —Angelo Molinari——Fabio Buzzi——Tullio Abbatte and a host more Swiss and Italian pilots .
All my summer holidays were spent with a wife and five kids in some old camper van pulling a race boat across europe . There was a two week period in August, when you could compete in ten races along the COTE D AZUR . Starting in Cannes—Antibes—Nice —-and a final in Monte Carlo.
I once came home with 22 trophies ——- a boat full of free fuel and a bellyful of Caviar [which i had never tasted before BELUGA. ]. Plus friends i made for life .
This was early sixties —— when Scotti was just another driver —-Renato was just old enough to have a licence —-Velden was a Radio and electrical goods shop owner—— the DE-BOOMS Were a family just like mine . Russians travelled in a very ancient [long past its sell by date] bus with 4 0R 5 boats on top and three behind on a rickety device they claimed was a trailer .
I remember crossing the channel back home [very sunburnt] with a bunch of well happy kids —- telling all the drivers back home what a great time we had . Following year was when the English invaded France —- PINSON—Spalding—-Coulson —Don Ross— Was the start of the best time in power boat racing history —for me anyway.
Here i go again —still abed and reminiscing on the iPad on scream and fly—- why the hell do i do that ?????

Charlie ——FETLOCKS are above the ankle and below the knee—- term usually used in equestrian society and overworked humans.
Casting is actually a series of brass castings stitched together to create a village blacksmith scenario , beating the crap out of his product —be it a cart wheel rim —-horseshoe or the humble propellor . No, i found one at the caR boot sale —the other i rescued from the scrap bin at the recycling facility .

I just spent money.

sssThank you Gene For this great article on the GN Boats. Yes I knew that Bill Sirois Had a hand in designing those boats. I believe the Tasmanian devil was owned by Allen RIvenbark And Bill as a partner in the boat and chief driver and engine builder. And again I think that’s Just after Bill and Doug split up. There were several of those boats built if I remember correctly it was only three or four. I know her HERNAN Garcia’s had one and of course Bob Donahue bought the Tasmanian devil and raced it. I think maybe Hugh James Had one and I believe Dan Deatherage also. I know that Bill drove the boat for a while said he’d had enough of it it was a great stable boat for A kilo Run But was not as stable in rough water racing. Over 95 mph it became very flighty. I think The molds ended up in Jacksonville with Hugh James But I could be wrong on that. Anyway thank you for the wonderful article.

Didn't Dan Deatherage have a daughter, Desiree, who went on to be a Hugh Heffner centerfold? A friend of mine in Treasure Island bought Ditch Digger w/o engine from Dan, but he never had the money to do anything with it and I think it rotted in his driveway.

Couple of ambitious projects on the go . First is ARTHUR MOSTERTS F1 VELDEN . This is one of three that Velden made for FRANCIOUS SALABERT ——-ARTHUR —- AND CEES VELDEN himself . Benson and HEDGES [tabacco giants] were the sponsors .
Cigarette packets were a very upmarket pale gold . Boats were a lot more YELLOW.
Second project is really ambitious —- three boats blowing pink smoke ???????? Comes with a hefty price tag if anyones interested .
Both BENNY ROBERTSON AND ARTHUR MOSTERT are people i would trust . I have offered ARTHUR the three boat concept [but he hasnt said yes yet .!!!!

SO MALIBUSTANG is airworthy !!!!!! Job done—ready to rock. Really pleased for you Gene. Guy next door to Mark [where we had the OFF gathering] has his own air strip. Quite a few of his friends keep a plane there. If you did decide to fly down to stuart, I’m sure we could collect you in the golf cart [or some such noble transport]. Fire Fighter/Paramedic is not a job for everyone. I did it for 32 years and it was the best job I could have asked for. However the downside you witnessed was always there. I came home one morning in 1976 and the Lieutenant who relieved me was killed in a vehicle accident by lunch time.

And leave sunny Florida and drive into Havasu for a championship race.

We were free to roam, and we thought it would always be that way.

P.S. What about those private air pilots, like in Colorado, they may get retracted to only takeoff & land at their home airstrip. I miss the Good Ole Days of freedom.

KEY WEST . Now there has to be a couple of thousand words available somewhere to record the happenings of 2022 down in HEMINGWAYS old stomping grounds. Today seems like a good day to start scribing again .
i think i can conjure up enough narrative of the happenings in florida during the first two weeks of November.
Christian Toll was recording his meeting with ODELL at Marks place during the two day OFF event, might try and nail him down —- if i can squeeze a good tale out of him it’ll be a good start.
Plus i have Benny’s and Arthurs boats to pack. Think i will bring them indoors to parcel up and send. That way they should get them for Christmas.

Finally got Benny and Arthurs concepts away .
Jesus wept but DHL certainly know how to charge for a parcel. 10 kilos [22lbs] cost over $100 to take to Jacksonboro NC. Plus nearly $60 for 4 kilos [9lbs] to Monaco.
If i could walk on water, it would be cheaper to strap the buggers on my back and just run over.
513372—these are the two concepts of Arthur and Benny.
already putting the finishing touches to the next COWES/TORQUAY trophy.
Picked out the trophy for Stevie Curtis’s mum [Ann].
Still no bloody way i will be going into SUPERSHED today— its 4 below and miserable .
Did actually start the KEY WEST chapter ——managed 800 words before i turned in last night. Looks like another day to hammer the i pad .

I have written childrens short stories when i have run out of “things to do” if i get a half chance i will print out a couple of the tales .
Did use my eldest daughter Sandra who was a nurse—-doc Magoon —Gene LANGHAM — and Rick Lahore as the tales protagonists .
Of course i never did get any of them printed —- not even the childrens stories . Was told i could make a shed load of money if the ever took off !!!!!!!!
But always did have folk telling me i could make a lot of money if i really wanted to !!!! Guess i never really wanted to.

History is often shrouded in mystery and secrecy—- none more so than powerboating in the 60/s and 70/s . Gene—-Odell —Cadillac —Alfie Bullen—-GG—-Pruett ,-Charlie [amberjack] and SIROIS have all gently touched on the nasty side of Florida and the hefty cash flow around that time . Nobody yet has documented much ======even BROWNIE only hinted at it in his book “THUNDERBOAT ROW” .
Will have to think on it ——- trouble is , a lot of those involved have kin still alive so will be living like nuns with clam like mouths.

Well yes there was, if you count VALDANO and the MOLINARI painted Gold . He was never part of the original three .
Made up the numbers to fulfil the contract with the tobacco company .
I’m not going down that route — these are just CONCEPTS of the three original Velden.
As far as i know no one ever attempted all three in one collection.
Not trying to even make a point — just attempting to fernagle 3 concepts of something that was “ in my time” and no one has attempted .513420

Never did have time to get PRUETT neutered in all of his fifteen years . He had a stamping ground of around 20 square miles . He could smell a bitch on heat five miles away. Never had to worry if he was late home .[he was always back in time for breakfast]
Only one he ever took any notice of was SAM my youngest daughter—- she could do anything with him. He was the scourge of West Sussex for fifteen years .
Afghan hound was a show dog at CRUFTS — belonged to my next door neighbour . Was only a question of time before he had her away—— when PRUETT was frisky not even chastity belts would deter him. He collapsed in a heap in the middle of a ploughed field stuck across the Afghan when aged 15 years . Last thing he ever did—-HE WAS SUCH A HAPPY DOG!!!!!!!

People only ever see what passes muster —- there’s damn near as much that does not make the grade and winds up in the scrap bin . Then of course there are those that ALMOST make it and are chucked under the bench for future reference [but another time].

Jackie you probably have already considered this, so, I will reinforce the idea. You need to have a chapter in your book, on your Concepts. And probably one of the concepts on the book’s cover.

With what little I know, you are now running (if not leading the pack) on race boat concepts. Especially the tunnel boat concepts. A legacy you are making for yourself.

Your concepts might be just as valuable to some guys, as their old race trophies. We all know, many trophies have gone to the junk pile.

jackiewilson
12-22-2022, 02:26 AM
It was daughter Sam that said if some of the trophies i had won had been like the concepts i made instead of the tin and plastic urns and four posters , i might have still had some instead of junking them.
Roy Cooper and Jason Mantripp have purchased my concepts to give out as annual perpetual trophies at Lowestoft and Oulton Broad Racing Club.
Miles Jennings has done the same for the Cowes/Torquay race .
At the annual BPBRDC lunch in Cowes, an anonymous person bought another concept for £2100 and then presented it to the club as a trophy to be awarded annually .
Both Arthur MOSTERT and Benny Robertson and ANNE CURTIS. [Stevies mum], have recently bought concepts.
Point i am trying to make is that i have to be bloody near dead before anybody thinks the stuff i create is any good.
Apologies to JIM H. And RICH L. And ODELL They had faith in me in the early days, i shall be eternally grateful to these people.
Must confess to being a tad lapse in writing the book—- there is enough written down to print an edition [125.000 words]. I still only write when i enjoy doing it !!! But it’s getting there.

Never even once considered writing a chapter on “CONCEPTS”—-hardly compares to PRUETT—-GARBRECHT———Great Racing Venues ——-still feel guilty writing about ME even. Nothing worse than a “BIGHEAD”. Or someone telling you how good they are . Proof of what they’ve done and a list of credits as long as your arm are the only credentials that can be “BRAGGED ABOUT” And those that actually did are usually very reticent about their achievements. Loudmouths are usually :WANNABEES” or NEARLY MEN looking for glory.
in all modesty i have got a lot better lately after many years of trying hard—— my family have always told me when something was SH-TE, or not quite up to muster . Plus , when there’s only you doing them —-there’s nobody to compare them with !!!!!!!!

Do have a slight problem here —- i am booked up from now until easter, thats providing i never take another commision. Just spent $500 on good aluminum , so i have some great stock.

Spent all friday morning clearing and cleaning the main bench ——cleaning the airbrush— changing the vice ——renewing all the grinding disks. In fact—making it safe to walk around the shop, without it being a danger to life and limb.
Rain has stopped for a brief respite before commencing again Christmas Day and into the new year, but nothing like you are having in the colonies!
spending the whole day cleaning up again —— made a big mistake not cleaning up after myself every day—- place gets to be like the bottom of a baby’s pram. [all snot and biscuit crumBS]. Had a great evening with Lizzie Christmas Eve, only night of the year she goes to bed willingly, she know KRIS KRINGLE is a very old friend of mine and calls me every day so she’s always on her best behaviour.
All the kids in the neighbourhood were out on their new contraptions[mostly electric power] we live in a circular close built around a huge green —all the kids were out racing long before the sun -up on new contraptions.
Turkey lunch and trimmings at Lizzie’s place —KINGS SPEECH—- plum duff and custard. Finish off the port. Drop off to sleep in an easy chair.
