    I had to sit that one out. I was in my probationary period with Dade County Fire and could not afford to get hurt off the job. It was frustrating to have a competitive boat for the race and not run it. Another rookie at my station had recently been injured in a motocross accident and quickly terminated so I just had to stand down till March of 1972.

    The greatest speed increase happen from 1953 to 1954.
    What do you think made this 20% speed increase?

    I will suggest two probabilities.
    a) In 1954 Massino used a different fuel source/additive.
    b) Massino switch from a flat bottom to a hydro hull.

    I do not mention a greater horsepower engine, because outboard evolution seems to me to be incremental. And you can see that, with the outboard results during the other subsequent records.

    This Apache now lives in Keswick, Ontario on Lake Simcoe.
    I don't know who owns it or its history/origin;
