but its not a std mid though is it?

That's what I'm talking about right there!!!!! I like your way of thinking!!!! Of course, I might be somewhat prejudice??? haha

Cause, you can have everything else & if the prop can't get you there, then ....... you're screwed!!!!!

Note I said it "might" bolt on. I would guess someone in engineering found a way to make it need a special midsection and be even more expensive. I recall someone from Merc saying it ended up costing more to manufacture than the whole engine retailed for. I think they made two or three.

A good friend of mine, Dave Bentley, built one inside a 20" mid & stuck it on an Allison XR2001 (Late 80', early 90's???). The gear ratio was pretty close. He would down shift it (underdrive) to start and zip up to 6000 rpm, shift (air-shift) into direct drive (1:1)and the rpm would drop back to 5000 and start pulling again..... Never let off the throttle!!! The boat had a small wobble when the shift happened ...... other than that, it ran great!!!!
There are many, many ratios to play with.... To overdrive the Lenco, just turn it upside down. It's a bullet proof transmission too!!!!!
I use to have a video of it running, but haven't come across it in years & wouldn't know where to look? It was cool to hear the rpm change so quickly and the boat take off again.
Jons/Todds 2 speed trans is a B&J unit designed for a Top Fuel Harley. Jon had to modify it to run vertical and be able to keep water out of it. It is a planetary trans like a Lenco but Jon being Jon saw how much lighter it was and would withstand the power he was making. It is a underdrive in low and 1 to 1 when shifted. We never tried turning it over to get a overdrive because we were drag racing with it. Like you said it is way cool when a outboard shifts gears. The crowd at Augusta went nuts but the record was set that weekend without it but with the lightweight tube midsection Jon built for it.

Wow.. Man, that would be great!!!!
I have a few pictures somewhere??? Not many..... back then , we didn't think about documenting much of anything....... wish we would have, cause now it's pretty cool thinking about it and talking about it.

I am going to try and start sorting some of Jon's items this weekend and I will start a posting them in the Buy and Sell titled "Jon Wright's stuff". Not sure what we are getting rid of yet, but the boat, transmission and big motors are staying with us.

The old OMC V4 record boat... starflight used a 20 percent overdrive gear case made by Hubbel. That gear case had 1to1 gears with a overdrive set up top.... a sun planet set.....Small gear running in a big open gear. I think ya going to need a tow boat or a 2 speed.....

This was further than a 1/4 mile, stretching it out a bit. The motor needed more prop, but the boat and I had enough. It could have taken more pitch, but this was the biggest prop Jon had at the time. If someone has a way to take video from a VHS tape and put it on youtube, I will send it to you to post. Let me know, I'll dig for it. I want to do it with a true outboard first, than let's see what the future holds. Crawl, walk and run theory.
Lets get back on track here. Todd has already done the above.. Now he has a more effecient hull but not by much because that 4 point Pugh was about as good as it gets. He ran that boat about 30 mph faster than it was supposed to go but made it work. A tad more horsepower with the current 2.5 nitrous set up on the outrigger if it works as advertised and with a LOT more gear/prop and I am pretty sure the current record is well within sight. Where it goes from there to 200 remains to be seen.

Ok, got the first video posted. I do not know who took this video, but some how I have it. I cut the part out of Tom Kunzmean's death, we have the full footage, it is heart breaking and I did not feel like it was right to air it. RIP Jon Wright and Tom Kunzeman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v93UsmMA5UE

    Hey Todd,
Thanks for posting the video. I didn't think there was any video of that race either. It was really bad when Tom crashed..... so sad.
Do you have any other video's from that race of any other classes? I was running in my Allison in the outside lane against my good friend Larry Harrel in the inside lane in his Mirage. He blew it over and went thru the steering wheel & dash. I think it was the next day after Tom's crash? He barely survived that crash .... it was a long drive back to Oklahoma for all of us after loosing Tom & almost Larry. Larry stayed in the hospital at Augusta for about a week before he got to come home...... it took all Winter for him to heal up. That next Spring, Larry blew his new Mirage race boat over & passed away..... it was 2-2 1/2 weeks before we found the body..... never found the boat!!! Just wondering if anyone had the video of our race?
    Thanks,
    Tim Bostic
