Sounds like Renato should have ventured to a more tax friendly haven, like Southern France or Monaco.
Very sad what happened to Renato, he had everything at one time, fame and fast cars, beautiful girl friend, wonderful business .
To see him now is almost tragic. From a thousand friends to very few in no time flat.
Most pictures of him today are with people who want to be seen with a boating legend, not as a friend.

The Renato Molinari that I knew was self-contained and business (racing & boat building) motivated. He kept people at a distant, and when it suited him, he would feign not knowing the English language very good around certain people. Even the Italian boat racers (and their entourage), Renato would limit his camaraderie with.

Giorgio his younger brother's nature was more open. I know because Giorgio and, his future wife, welcomed me into socializing with their large group of friends.

In the past Renato might not have a been an open book to his contemporaries. but he was a race champion on the water. A champion in which others prided themselves when they passed him.

invented the throw yourself off style of racing for maximum adhesion round corners, that’s still popular today.
Raced against the top Americans in Kenny Roberts and Randy Mamola.
Was a Suzuki works rider and later Yamaha.
I gave him his first helicopter ride.
He’s got his own chapter in Jack’s Book.!
What does a F1 motorcycle champion do after a devastating accident at Silverstone? He rehabs by waterskiing behind his Mercury powered boat My Doreen. Doreen is his nickname for his girlfriend.

Barry Sheene in all his racing contracts, he signed a clause which stated that, after the racing bike has been retired from the circuit; the bike becomes Barry’s property. And this 125cc Suzuki is Barry’s favorite in his entire racing career's bike collection. The 125cc was at the beginning of racing career, when he was also the mechanic on the bike.

A likable chap. I just watched a documentary on Barry, and it is sad that at an early age his cancer was fatal.

Boat Racing needs to produce great documentary videos. Showcase the sport better.

1976 the fastest men on the race track were Britons. In 1976 Formula One Champions were
James Hunt and Barry Sheene. But on water that year, a racer from another country was the champion.

I just watched a documentary on James and Barry, and the video was filled with a lot of interviews. Race footage and interviews with the driver’s family members, team members and beat writers. The title: Barry Sheene & James Hunt When playboys ruled the world. In the doc, we become aware one of the guys is very likable and the other can be ... plus all other issues on and off the race track.

Will F1 boat racing ever have comprehensive video documentaries, which are common for other sports?

Both James Hunt and Barry SHEENE were legendary playboys. James and HOTTIE BIRKETT were outrageous, LORD HESKETH was his mentor.
Doreen was his wife’s nickname. Used to bring him Bacon Eggs and fried mushrooms to eat on the grid just before the start, made others on the grid throw up just before the start.
Read all about it in jacks book next year.
First of his major accidents was Daytona, was rumoured he was running close to 200 mph when it happened.

Is there a F1 driver today with any character?
If we swapped them out for robots who would we miss?

Hamiltons dad picked him up time and time again, from a council house to Monaco and Geneva. But he’ll never get any credit !

You can’t put all the blame on him Pilgrim. Try the pandemic,
it’s getting blamed for everything. Why not the decline of F1.

not demeaning Hamilton at all but you could just watch the races and skip ever having to see a driver, nobody would notice
Bike racing is like that, today I know the names but can only recognise Rossi but can recognise the guys from way back and the same for F1
