    Dr Stanley Hooker, genius.
They never looked back after he joined, until he retired and the RB211 bankrupted them so he came back and fixed that.

yes the narrow Vee water cooled is the engine for a fighter, the yanks did have more powerful engines like the PW2800 at 2000+HP but its huge.
Ask any fighter pilot in the USAir Force what he thought of a Rolls Merlin——— his answer will always be the same———— it made the Mustang into a fighter instead of a carrier pigeon——- in fact, rumour has it the P51 was quicker than the spitfire! ( but there’s no confirmation of that ).

I always thought that the DeHav Mosquito was a hotter ship than the P51.............TWIN Merlins and the structure was primarily wood (like tunnel boats)!

like a boat, it was a newer design so it outperformed the Spitfire but it was designed to do a different job so apples and oranges.

The Mosquito was one of the prettiest planes ever built——- but it was a TWIN engined FIGHTER/BOMBER.
The Yankee pump screwdriver was banned from the workshop floor——- it kept slipping out of the slotted screws of the day and punching holes in the plywood.
Just another piece of totally irrelevant and useless information———- we get a lot of that on the “TRICKS” site.

Funny how screw heads have evolved since WWII.

Slots were replaced with cross / Phillips drive.
Phillips were replaced by square and Allen drive
Phillips, square and Allen drive were ultimately replaced by Torx drive.

When we got to Torx drive being commonplace for fastening, I went thru my garage / shop inventory and practically threw everything away that had slots.

I don't even remember the last time I drove a screw in by hand. It's all cordless lithium ion drill / driver tools these days...........

Rest of the world learned and used the metric system———— where even simpletons think they’re Einstein’s, as everything’s divisible by ten, except the USA ? ——- Tell Me Pilgrim—— have they started using the metric system in the aircraft and automobile industry yet——- or they still got their heads buried in the sand!
Got lots to tell you, caught up with Craig and family——— suffered a family afternoon at the TITCH ——- leaving in a while to spend time with the three great grandsons——— all born in the USA!

I grew up with both living half way between the UK and USA
I hate metric fasteners/sockets and their lack of standards to fudge things to fit, but love measuring things in metric when it suits.
    piston clearance, thou
    6 inches and a foot not 150 and 300mm
    4 x 2 or 2 x 4 has the yanks call it
    Tanks measurements and volumes, metric
    weight, metric
pressure , imperial unless its something where bar makes sense
    degrees, not radians
lph or US gph and UK gph
fuel still gets loaded in planes in either lbs or kg
I think Boeings are still 100% imperial

Merc and BRP have changed to metric on all new engines i am pretty sure
GM Ford etc I guess are fully changed
dont forget some shaft sizes have been metric all along as the bearings have been metric
Metric countrys havent won any wars and metric engines dont hold any speed records, is that still true?
Metric means socialism and imperial means freedom

...In the wood boat building world, the "Reed & Prince" silicone bronze wood screws were the next generation screws, that replaced the straight slot wood screws. They were a recessed cross head pattern that came to a point at the inside bottom, and could only be driven with Reed & Prince driver or bit. Very precise fitment & quality for the times. Mostly in the 40's through the 60's, at Chris*Craft, Owens, etc.
