In Europe we race under UIM rules, not APBA——- all I ever wanted to do was race. I was never a politician and I certainly had nothing to do with making any rules.
You should know better than most how anything extraordinary gets folk ticking !
To this day the Wankel was never accepted as a legal motor.
According to UIM rules——— the designation of an Outboard is simple——— it must be removable from the boat complete with its drive. End of.
We went to Parker to race a boat———- and didn’t give a flying fart what class we raced in——- we were “RACERS” nothing else.
Both Mercury and OMC had made a right pigs ear of the racing scene, in inboard and Outboard classes. They were slowly killing racing .
As you well know, it’s been well documented anyway. The Cosworth competed for just one short season, first race was Bristol where we finished fifth overall against twelve factory boats and all the best drivers in the world. I have no excuses, should have done better, but didn’t..
Second race was Amsterdam ( again ,against both factory teams——— was leading at the halfway stage, but managed to hole the hull..
Third race was the 100 mile Duchess of York at Chasewater——— full international field , Percival, Spalding, Bullen , Jenkins Thornywork apped the whole field twice
Never broke brown ever———- only race we didn’t finish was Amsterdam with a hole in the boat.
Bet you wish you could say the same thing about the rotories , only decent race they ever won was Windermere after all the front runners dropped out and Downard managed to limp over the line to win.
Time to get up, I’m hungry.

Every once in a while something different or unusual comes along. Rarely completely successful, often running under a grey area of the rules but always done with passion and a high level of engineering know how or a devil may care lets just try it attitude. Those that try it always think it great, those competing against it call it illegal or underhand, against the spirit of the rules. But you know what, who gives a ****, let's just worship them at the altar of innovation or out of the box thinking, because whether your cosworth i/o, rotary, brabham fan car, etc the truly great things will always live on in people's memory long to be argued over by friends or enemies alike and if we don't have our history what do we have?

In Amsterdam 1976 if I remember right did Jackie race the 2 liter outboard class with the Cosworth 2 liter inboard. There was always a 2 liter inboard class in Paris 6 hours.

Yes, that’s right Lassie——-Bill Brown and I shared the Miles Two litre Cosworth outfit, I provided the boat and running gear——— Bill took care of the engine.
He raced it in Rotterdam and in fact was in the lead after the first one and a half hour heat, On re entry to start the second heat he dropped the boat from the crane and broke all the engine mounts.
He Decided he would be the sole driver after Carlsberg came up with some rather large sponsorship money! We parted company on the dockside in Rotterdam.
It was two weeks before the Amsterdam race——- I bought Roger Hooks Scimitar and Chas and I fitted a brand fire new BDG (settlement for me walking away) Cosworth lump in it.
Made the start line and led the race from the flag until one hour ten minutes into the race when a cracked exhaust manifold poured water all over the electrics.
We lost the last twenty minutes of the heat.
Second heat, did a repeat performance and won the second hour and a half heat.
Bill Brown managed to sink John Hill in his OE class boat which resulted in his sinking in the pits
The boat had never even been fired up or turned a lap prior to the race.
Had a new Hodges built for the Paris race ——- came round first on the first lap——— was lying third behind Percival and Spalding after the first hour when I threw a blade.
The inboards were always fairly competitive with the factory boats. tried step up boxes and all all sorts of gizmos at one time or another.

Jackie..Why did you not race the 2 liter inboard class in Paris instead of forcing you in to the 2 liter outboard class (ON)..??
Most of my Swedish friends race cats in the 2 liter inboard class in Paris and won the inboard class.
As and outboard driver inboards was a pain.. much heavier and they made larger waves (because of the weight) and was more difficult to pass then an outboard boat in the same class.
My personal opinion is.. it was crazy to mix up outboards with rule bending inboards in the same class.
