My friend Bjorn Christiansen who just bought the vintage Ducati to do the Mille Miglia needed to make some parts for the blke. Asked if he could use my lathe---------he was on it most of the day, so that buggered up any chance I had of using the shop myself.
Come the weekend we'll be halfway through April and summers just around the corner.

Jackie why dont you make your own aluminium props?
Easy to melt ally in the shed.
Do it via lost wax method
Worth a try if getting props is hard.

I can usually turn my hand to making most things Pilgrim------but turn the shop into a foundry ? Doesn't that require vast amounts of candle power ? Smelting aluminium-------lost wax processing is'nt that something the Romans did thousands of years ago ? Then, there's the small matter of the moulds------believe it's called "Pattern Making" .
Just because my son and grandson have taken giant leaps of faith, changed their whole way of life and bitten off giant mouthfuls of "Lifesride", doesn't mean I'm about to do the same-------whilst I'm not averse to change ------I can't be doing with life changing alterations -------im a bit long in the tooth for that ! But thanks for the thought Pilgrim .

You only need a few tablespoons of ally.
Can melt with the oxy or even lpg/oxygen mix.
Very small cruciable like half a hollowed out firebrick
Just bigger than a jeweller has.
Very nice in winter.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah Pilgrim, and for my next trick I'll turn water into wine !
Maybe turn Sunday supplements into $100 dollar bills ?
Make the new river POWERABOUT flow in the Sahara ?
Feed the starving Yemeni kids with Two loaves and five fishes, (that would be a neat trick)
I know my limitations Pilgrim ! I' ll just get on the dot dot and order twenty props from Hong Kong
Crucibles ? Melted alloy ? Oxy acetylene ? 85 year old mad model maker------sounds like a recipe for certain disaster, or at best World War Two and a half with her who shall be obeyed ?
Heres looking at you blue eysch.

Fair enough
I was saying it coz me and my mates when we were teenagers made rudders and skegs etc for our rc boats.
My mates brother inlaw was was a jeweller so he showed us how easy.
Have to admit plastic props fron hong kong were cheap so never made those.Last edited by powerabout; 04-12-2017 at 05:07 AM.

Well thank you S&F, guess that must be you Greg, don't get many compliments these days, most of the concepts are a bit "old hat". Suppose I ought to try something new. Never did find out what people like or want.
Exception to that are Roger Hinsdale and Rich Luhrs, Ted Boyd and a few old racers who wanted a facsimile of their old race boat.
Have done two or three Americas Cup contraptions-------Vaneofoils ? A trapeze on stilts------about as close to a real boat as a short wave computerised biscuit tin ! Never sold one, nobody even commented on them-------all three of em are still cluttering up the shed. Will give then to a charity raffle one day, just to see the tail lights.
Might try one of these new hybrid superyacht trimarans that all these world famous yacht designers keep shoving out.
Me meself think that in the search for something different, modern day designers have run out of ideas, don't know which way to turn, wind up with highly unlikely pug ugly nightmares that are only of interest to Oligarchs, football, baseball and basket ball club owners.
Go on , get off to bed all of you-------that's enough nonsense for the week, let alone the day!

Well sod my old britches if it's not bloody Thursday again-----------they keep coming round like an out of control spinning top.
That means its car boot day, time to go treasure hunting, one day I'll find that missing Piccasso or that first edition "Tom Sawyer", or the 12th century Ming vase somebody used as a door stop. I see it all the time on the antiques road show, just haven't come across mine yet.
Thought long and hard------next up has to be a kooky superyacht concept, think I can do one that'll make a nice paperweight for somebody's office-------anyone interested ? $450 ------metal and wood "Jackielad" original, you can buy it kinda "Off plan" except I don't have one.
Now that would be a giant leap of faith!
We could start up a thread for out of work, retired, old, artistic wannabe ex boat racers with a flair for making useless but interesting bits of nonsense. I'm in if you are!
Im off to the car boot sale.

No, once again Eureka turned out to be Detroit-on-Sea-------must be losing my touch!
Nibbled away at the superyacht concept, not quite as dreadful as the designers would have you believe they need to be.
Do a dummy run to begin with, using some USA oak-and som flat eight mill alloy------will never get it spot on first time.
Ill take it from there and see how things pan out.

Got the outriggers all wrong -------short, fat, stumpy little feckers-------binned those and started afresh.
made a couple more and a new centre hull-------looks better already.
Ideas are coming thick and fast------it's already light years beyond the original conception and the main thing is, I'm having fun doing it.
If it gets screwed up, I'll just dump it and start all over again.
I have a huge chunk of cream cowhide to do the interior with (cut it out of the settee before I took it to the dump).---------don't know if I have the balls to attempt it ?
Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained
Might even put a staircase out the back and a single 2.000 HP stern drive, with ghost electric plug ins as back up!
See what I mean about letting the think juices flow free-------go lateral and you can create any damn thing you want---------getting it all into an acceptable "Concept" is a whole different ball game, close of play good Friday will give us a good indication.
Happy Easter to one and all and especially all those dopey enough to read my ramblings on the "Tricks" site, just want to say thanks for being my friends, and being there when you were most needed.
May your God go with you, J.
