Interesting info coming out. DoctorC I like when you stick in some facts now and then.
So the early yellow 21' Tuff w/ HPDI 300 ran approx. 89 mph ? Was heavier (we talking say 150-200lbs?) then the Blue newer Carbon fiber W/G2 250 at now tickle 90 ?
I thought I recalled the yellow 21' w/300 hpdi had been to 92 but I now must be mistaken. I believe our local 2003 21' Red Intimidator once ran a 300 HPDI for a short time and that ran 92 with little setup time. Guess I confused the two.
My hat is off to my friend James Cole for his efforts in redoing this original (non-light weight, non-notched pad) 21' challenger and getting it to 90 with similar power.

Driver skill and of course budgets come into play as well but I sure do love seeing what combos you N. Eastern V-21 boys run.
Oh, and the who's got the biggest "Prop" banter is amusing as well.

Gelcoat is very heavy and is why I question the finish being paint!
Maybe Rob from Raybo can verify this?

Bingo 2.5. It all starts with the true total weight.
A lot of folks over the years have said that all the Tuff 21's are different custom layups. Tuff has been building this model for at least a full decade for general consumption and I'm sure that they have built at least (24) hulls in that time frame. Can Tuff 21 weights differ by more than 150-200lbs over two dozen hulls built? I tend to doubt it but I am not a boat builder. I think a bit of the speed that the Tuff's achieve are based on running in freshwater and zero humidity up North. I'm sure that there are folks on this board that can comment, but the combo of freshwater and no moist air is probably worth 3-4mph in top end. Now you are more apples to apples.
106mph 300XS Tuff in Canada is a 102mph Tuff in Long Island is a 100mph Tuff in Miami.

I don't know how tuff does it, but some infusion builders are painting right over the resin surface. No gell in the mold at all.
