Here is a mass produced 199hp per liter example with a warranty and not forced induction. The 400r was adapted from a fishing boat motor never compare to something built specialized. Is it perfect no im just glad there are preforamce boats are still being built and not everthing is center console

Bad a$$ rocket right there! The 400R is just the next evolution of outboards in my mind. The performance market will get their chance to wring the potential out of it.

Everyone always wants to compare outboards to motorcycle engines. There is no comparison. The load on a bike engine is extremely small and 99% the rpm is very low. The power curve is completely different. Very little low end because a geabox makes up for it. Even when its up there making power its only for a few moments.

Take the HP made at say every 200rpm over the entire powerband for each motor, add the numbers up, and tell me which motor makes more power.

Dont forget 500cc gp 2 stroke bikes were over 200hp thats 400 per litre with no boost, makes those 4 strokes seem feable.
(But no hills and full throttle for seconds not hours)
Still waiting for 4 stroke to replace a F1 engine....

    Absolutely......

A good friend of mine who also happens to build Class 1 race motors in addition to almost any other I/O based big HP engine explained it to me this way when is asked why so many were having so much trouble with other builders motors or even crate motors.

His words, "Motors built to street or even race car specs simply don't work over time in a marine application due to the way it's loaded. The best analogy is to take your truck, fill it with people and gear, hook up your 6000 lb boat and trailer then imagine driving that rig up a 20 degree grade for hours on end. How long do you think that hot rod motor you dropped in before the trip will last?".

Marine motors need to withstand constant load while still being responsive. They need to shed heat unimaginable to a car or motorcycle motor and do it over and over again. You simply can't compare the different applications.

Mike told me that same line - almost word for word - when I was in talks with him about building small blocks for my 30 back in 2004. I ended up going with a pair of 588s at his recommendation........

Problem with cycle engines is they don't produce much torque. That engine only made 83 lb/ft torque which isn't moving a boat!

Show's that like it or not Mercury is selling motors, more O/B cats being built regardless of opinions and speeds they can achieve.
Good news is that this should lead to a new model next year with a few more ponies for the bigger O/B cats being built.
